I bought this to help perform research on a security course that I'm preparing. Even though the information on some of the honeypot programs is a bit outdated, I still found the book very helpful. It's well-written, and gives a very good explanation of how to implement honeypots. It was a tremendous help in my research.

This book is written with obvious passion towards honeypots as the author obviously believes in the power of honeypots in making the corporate network a safe place. The discussion cover simple and advanced topics in honeypot motives, creation and trapping hacker information. In all, a well researched book that evangelises the use of honeypot intrusion detection

Great Overview of Honeypots for the Beginner.......2004-08-27

This book did a great job of presenting the concepts of modern honeypot technology. It begins by covering the basic concepts of what the different types of honeypots can do, the different design concepts of production honeypots vs. research honeypots and how honeypots can be an aid to network security in any organization. The one thing I did'nt like was the "flow" of the book and the way some chapters were written. There was an exessive amount of fluff, some topics were beat like a dead horse. The book could easily have shaved off 50 pages making it a better read. Overall, it was a great book, I learned a lot, and would recomend it to anyone looking for an intro to honeypots. The included CD was a plus as well.

Honeypots is an excellent introduction to the subject of honeypots, useful as a reference for experts as well as for beginners to the subject. It is written very clearly and provides step-by-step instructions with plenty of examples and screenshots. It covers commercial, open source, and do-it-yourself solutions, from very simple low-interaction detection honeypots to very high-interaction research honeypots. A CD-ROM is included with software and example data collected by honeypots. One defect is a fairly large number of typos.

Great research book!.......2002-08-28

There have been many other prominent books written on this subject matter dealing with specific geographic regions in Europe. Trevor Deans' book presents a very expansive view of crime and punishment in Medieval Europe. It successfully gives a general and overall view of how and why crimes occurred in England, France, Scotland, Italy, and Spain. This book contains a great synthesis of material about areas envolving crime and punishment such as: court systems, judges, punishment, impunity of the nobility, violent crimes, sex crimes, and gender specific crimes. Dean's book is worth while for any one interested in this subject or a lay person looking to learn about crime and punishment in Medieval Europe.

The Polly Parker Stories.......2005-12-27

I am really shocked that this first rate Fitzgerald collection does not have the "Polly Parker" stories that originally were printed serially in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST in 1922. Apparently these uncollected stories remain unavailable anywhere in book form.

Polly Parker was a typical Fitzgerald heroine -- a blue-eyed flapper with a pert nose and golden hair bobbed very short. The reason her stories are omitted, I gather, is that they were slightly more sexual in tone and also addressed taboo subjects such as alcoholism, racial violence, incest, and insanity.

"GRANDPA'S GOLD" the first Polly story, deals with lasting echoes of the Civil War. Spoiled Polly goes to Vermont for the summer to stay with her aging grandfather -- the last remaining Union army veteran in Vermont. Ultimately she robs him of a small fortune in gold coins which he had originally intended to donate to a Negro orphanage. This story highlights Fitzgerald's ambivalence towards the young women of the day -- Polly is cruel and selfish, but also winningly spontaneous, free and independent. Fitzgerald's racism is in full flower here as well. The fact that she is "only" robbing colored people seems to make her crime an amusing prank rather than a vicious crime.

"ALLIGATOR QUEEN" is both darker and more sophisticated. Polly is a houseguest in Georgia, where she meets Eleanor Hiss, a jazz age siren who may or may not have negro blood. The two girls deliberately lead a young Harvard man out into quicksand, then go joy riding in his car while he slowly drowns. Fitzgerald later wrote that Eleanor seduced Polly in an early draft -- but in 1922 the SATURDAY EVENING POST would never have carried a story with an explicit lesbian seduction.

"HOLY MATRIMONY" is the ironic finale to the Polly Parker stories. Invited on a weekend yachting party, Polly is compromised by an Eastern Prince and forced to marry silent movie star Reginald Dashwood. Dashwood is a homosexual who needs "discreet companionship." Polly marries him, assuming he is a pushover, but instead he is cruel, domineering and controlling -- and aided by an iron-willed mother who treats Polly like a servant. Polly's "punishment" is ironic, since she now has unlimited wealth and a dazzling husband -- but no freedom and no hope of either sexual or spiritual release.

Taken together, these three stories represent Fitzgerald's darkest early work -- and they should be included in any "definitive" collection.

Short Stories.......2002-09-12

I bought this book for the short stories. They are like small diamonds on a necklace, sparkling in a row, each one a wonder. Fitzgerald's short stories are like that.

"The Off Shore Pirate" is hilarious. The "Ice Palace" is strange and beautiful. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is about a baby born very old who gets younger every year.

"The Diamond As Big As The Ritz" is classic Fitzgerald, about the rich.

The story that is missing is "The Rich Boy." This is the story that started the famous spat between Hemingway and Fitzgerald.

In this short story, Fitzgerald writes: "The rich are very different from you and me." Hemingway responds in his short story, "The Snows Of Kilimanjaro:" "Yes, they have more money."

But you will not find "The Rich Boy" in this book. Too bad.

Included with the short stories are two novels:: This Side Of Paradise and The Beautiful And Damned. They are very adolescent novels. High school students might enjoy them.

Maybe not.

The short stories do more to describe the Jazz Age than his novels.

If you are serious about this author, his greatest novel is The Great Gatsby. His next best novel is Tender Is The Night. "The Rich Boy" is his best short story.

Good Collection of Pre-Gatsby Work.......2000-11-13

This is a very attractive packaged, comprehensive collection of Fitzgerald's early work, containing his first two novels (This Side of Paradise and The Beautiful & Damned) and his first two short story collections. Included are some classic short stories such as May Day and The Diamond As Big As The Ritz. Some of the other stories are less than classic, but all are enjoyable. As is the case with all Library of America volumes, the book is very easy to handle and read. There is a useful set of notes and chronology of Fitzergald's life in the back. All in all, this is well worth the price.

Yes, She wrote a novel.......2007-01-20

I thought "What the heck" when purchasing this book. Honestly, it's entertaining and funny. Any woman in her 20s to 30s can relate to the stuff American Thorne is living through: not enough $ to pay the rent, selfish boyfriends, bad sex, good sex, break-ups, etc.

The book is peppered with pop culture and terrific song lyrics and seasoned with a sense of sarcastic humor - just the way I like.

This is not deep, methodical reading, but a good summer read, even a good girlfriends' book club book.

Enjoy the laughs. I sure did.

America the Beautiful is magnificent.......2004-07-18

From the minute I picked up this unique book I could not stop reading it. I began reading it online through Amazon and was almost to the second chapter when the "look inside this book" option was done. I rushed to the store and bought the book to continue reading that evening. I finished this short book in about a week, only stopping to do various important tasks. It was simply delightful and a great tool of validation for the silly things people do when they've been broken up with. For a relatively light hearted read I suggest picking this one up.

Truly honest.......2004-01-09

Moon's ability as an author is displayed in this humorous, honest and raw story of a woman so real you can picture a little bit of her in every one of your female friends. It isn't a classic but it isn't a trashy novel either. It is real enough to have flaws but perfect enough to be real.
I found myself shaking my head at some of the actions of America but had a smile on my face the whole time. I whipped through this book and regretted it once I was finished because I loved the characters and the dialogue.
I long for another novel by Moon.

Moon Unit Zappa: She shoulda been in middle management.......2002-08-12

Because Moon Unit Zappa is the daughter of a famous creative individual, she seems to feel she's entitled to live the life of a creative person as well. Too bad she's not really good at anything. Her music "career" began and ended with one novelty hit 20 years ago, her acting "career" basically amounted to a one-episode stint on "Party of Five," and now we have this, an obviously highly autobiographical novel with "America Throne" playing the part of Moon Unit herself. On the back cover, Alanis Morissette has contributed a quote praising the "egolessness" of this book. I guess what she means is that, through America, Moon Unit allows us access to all her most mundane or downright stupid thoughts and deeds, no matter how humiliating they may be. But in fact, Moon Unit's believing that the general public would actually be INTERESTED in her most mundane and stupid thoughts and deeds is really the height of egotism (or as Alanis would probably put it, "egofulness"). In the book, Moon Unit also complains quite a bit about how having a famous father ruined her life. Yet she seems perfectly happy to use his fame when it suits her--after all, this book probably wouldn't have gotten read or even published if the author's last name weren't "Zappa." It's unfortunate that this book, with its patriotic-sounding title, was published in September 2001, when most of us began to renew our own patriotism. It's too meaningful a title for such a shallow, shallow book. Moon Unit, let me assure you, it's not too late to go back to school and become an accountant or something. ... .

Lighthearted and fun.......2002-06-21

This book was recommended to me as something that would be fun to read but not very deep - take it for what is worth, just that. While the plot revolves around America Throne, professional dilettante daughter of world famous painter Boris Throne, it is not too difficult for the reader to make the leap that this is a thinly veiled "auto-biography" of sorts as Moon Unit's father is the famous/infamous musician and personality Frank Zappa.

Beyond the obvious, America The Beautiful is fun - she could be one of your girlfriends trying to get over being unceremoniously dumped. While the reader alternately laughs and feels sorry for America as she goes back and forth between calling her neer-do-well ex Jasper and begging him to come back to her and telling him off. She reads self-help books and tries to move on.

America's family, her half-there mother and brother Spoonie, is just as entertaining as she is. The reader watches as America learns to move on and meet other men and who knows, maybe the man she is meant to be with after all.

With tons of fun pop-culture references, musical lyrics and witty commentary, America The Beautiful is a good, fun, quick read that would be perfect for a vacation.
