Readers interested in achieving mastery of the Internet Protocol (IP) addressing system and its related protocols should consult the superior information provided in IP Fundamentals.

Author Thomas A. Maufer begins with a discussion of the IP numbering system, including excellent coverage of subnetting, supernetting, and the differences between IPv4 and IPv6. The author reveals the intricacies of variable-length subnet masking (VLSM) and classless inter-domain routing (CIDR) before addressing how IP operates in various infrastructures, including Ethernet, Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), Token Ring, and Frame Relay. In his discussion of IP routing, the author shows how the two versions of Routing Information Protocol (RIPv1 and RIPv2) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) work, both independently and in heterogeneous routing environments.

Maufer strikes a commendable balance between thoroughness and practicality. He makes sure--through liberal use of examples--that you understand everything necessary to complete your job. But he also goes to extraordinary lengths to bolster your grasp of the IP suite; his chapters conclude with fact-rich endnotes, plus references to journal articles and standards documents. In this way, IP Fundamentals helps you surpass mere technical competence to become an IP addressing and routing expert. --David Wall

5 out of 5 stars This will make it easier to understand the IP World........2001-06-10

I have passed several exam involving IP, Routing and Switching. I though I had a very good understanding of the concepts. After reading this book I found that what I knew only scratched the surface.

From the beginning of the book you get topics like IP and IP routing foundations, addressing, subnetting, VLSM, detailed breakdown of the first three layers of the OSI model, Ethernet technologies, token ring and FDDI, PPP and Frame Relay.

The author breaks down routing with RIP and OSPF very well and makes the concepts comprehensible for even the beginner level technician. Also he handles ICMP, 802.1q & p as well as first-rate coverage of DHCP.

The book seems very complete and the author makes sure to include the RFCs that correspond to the different section for the reference purposes. Overall this is one of the best books for IP subject matter.

4 out of 5 stars Very good explanation of concepts. however poor editing.......2001-03-20

This otherwise excellent book is marred and riddled by moderate to serious typos. At times the typos almost makes the text incomprehensible.

If the reader is ready to put in the extra effort and patience to understand these troubled portions of the book, then what he gets is surely worth all the trouble.

The book is one of the best book on IP that I have ever read. It explains in very great details and with amazing simplicity the most cryptic details about CIDR, VLSM and other highly complex topics.

The Chapters are arranged very logically and it almost feels like a continous text. I have decided to give the book 4 stars although it deserves more than 5 stars. I would really advise the publishers to spend some more time on a book to ensure its correctness, before the send the book out to the press.

One last think which I feel is that this book does assumes certain previous knowledge of concepts like ARP and other basic concepts of IP, hence this book should be much more fun and usefull after a reading a primary book on TCP/IP like Douglas Comer or W.R. Stevens.

4 out of 5 stars Ultimate Subnetting.......2001-02-01

This book is amazing. I purchased it to get a firm grasp on subnetting, and it did for me what no other resource was able to do. The informative chapters followed by real world exercises really made me understand the underlying reasons as to why sunbetting was necessary and how it could be applied in real world scenerios. I only gave this book a 4 because at some points the writing does get a bit wordy, reading more like a technical manual. But other than that, this book is a keeper!

4 out of 5 stars Just what the title says..........2000-11-15

This book will definately show you everything you need to know about IP. It has been a truly valuable resource. If you are new to IP and Routing, however, you may want to read something a little more basic first. Without a basic understanding of IP concepts, this book may seem a little too complex. Excellent book to keep on the shelf though...you'll go back to it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars What every Administrator Should know about IP.......2000-11-11

This book is what is says Fundamental. IF you work with IP or want to work with IP you should know what is in this book. I found the chapter on subnetting wonderfully enlightening. This book answered many of my questions I had about IP. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description

The reader-friendly explanation of how the IP address space works and how it is used

The Internet Protocol (IP) is the native protocol suite of the Internet and has become predominant in virtually all networks and internetworks. Managing an IP address space requires a solid command of binary mathematics, particularly as it is applied within the IP addressing architecture. The mathematics of the IP address space, however, are not intuitive and can be very difficult to grasp. Consequently, learning about IP addressing can be a lot like trying to piece together a jigsaw puzzle-but without knowing what the puzzle is supposed to look like.

IP Addressing Fundamentals explains simply and clearly how the IP address space works and how it is used. This is a reader-friendly book that details the fundamentals of the IP address space from the ground up. IP Addressing Fundamentals unravels the mysteries of subnetting, supernetting, and CIDR; thoroughly explains the binary mathematics of IPv4's addressing space; and demonstrates how an IP address becomes an active component in both networks and internetworks. Author Mark Sportack prepares you for real-world success by walking you through some of the issues and traps that lie in wait for anyone who needs to plan or manage the use of an IP address space. Most importantly, this book doesn't presume you already know what the entire IP addressing puzzle looks like.

IP Addressing Fundamentals imparts a profound command of IP addressing through a clear and concise writing style. Basics are reinforced with detailed information and numerous examples of how the concepts work. This book builds upon concepts presented in earlier chapters and concludes with fairly advanced topics that will become increasingly useful to midlevel network engineers.

After reading IP Addressing Fundamentals, you'll finally understand IP addressing and appreciate both its mechanics and relevance, and you'll know how to efficiently apply your new knowledge.

IP Addressing Fundamentals by Mark A. Sportack Cisco Press ISBN 1587050676

Just recently my company reorganized our network group. My job changed drastically.
I am now responsible for supporting our Cisco wired and wireless network. Wanting to get up to speed quickly I ask one of my coworkers for advice. He advised me to learn IP addressing. He said if I got a firm foundation in IP this would give me a better understanding of Cisco switching and routing. Since we have a Cisco network I looked to Cisco Press to find a book on IP addressing. I found that they had a book by that exact name, IP Addressing Fundamentals. The book was written Mark A. Sportack. Mr. Sportack not only writes books about networking but networking is his life. He is involved in networking literally day and night. He is a Director of Network Engineering by day and a professor at Syracuse University by night.

I received my book and began to read. If you are looking for a book that tells you how to configure a pc or server you have chosen the wrong book. If you need to know IP addressing inside and out this is the book for you. Mr. Sportack's style of writing made the book very easy to read. The book is divided into five parts with fifteen chapters.
This book helps you not only to understand how IP addressing works now, but how it originally worked and how it will work in the future. The author points out that when IP was in its infancy the rules and regulations worked fine but with the explosion of the internet problems soon cropped up. The author explains in each chapter what these problems were and how they were overcome to keep the internet viable. You may ask why all of this history of IP addressing and the internet are necessary. The author explains it best in Chapter Five, The Date of Doom, when he makes this statement. "The more you know about these and other constraints the better you will be able to deal with them on your job." Now this is what I look for in a book, someone who understands that I am not reading this book because I don't have anything to do, I am reading this book to help me on my job.

The author covers all phases of IP addressing such as: binary mathematics, classes of addresses, fixed and variable length subnet masks, classless interdomain routing, NAT, and private addresses. Other topics cover networking with IP, DNS, and the future of IP addressing with IPv6. There are numerous examples and illustrations throughout the book that make each concept easy to understand. On a scale of one to five, I give this book a five. This book has helped me tremendously on my job. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand IP addressing. Because the book was clear and easy to understand, I would be eager to read other books by this author.

5 out of 5 stars If you need to learn IP addressing this may be the book........2002-11-14

I have taught Network+, A+, CCNA and CIW for the past four years and in each of those classes there is sections in IP addressing What I should have had was this book to teach from. The author certainly has done his homework

The book starts with basic binary conversion which is essentials to understand when working with IP addressing. You then work with classfull addressing and fixed subnet masks. The author also explains the drawbacks to this type of addressing, which is usually skipped over in most texts.

The discussion on VLSM is both in the positives of use as well as the negatives. Form the there the author gives and excellent breakdown of CIDR and supernetting and NAT. What I think could be added to the next edition is more practice examples. Overall this would make a nice addition to the CCNA Preparation library.

          Book Description

Charting is a complex and sometimes derided world, but one that nonetheless commands an enormous following. Some basic knowledge of charting is essential for any keen investor, and this fully revised and updated edition of Alistair Blair's Guide to Charting is the independent, introductory overview of technical analysis for the private investor. Guide to Charting is packed with purpose-drawn charts and worked examples, and explains in detail how charting theories work. Written with the private investor's viewpoint in mind the book's coverage will give you all that you need to start practicing technical analysis and, unlike other books on the subject, will also interest the more sophisticated, experienced practitioner by --

Comparing technical analysis with fundamental analysis; Examining the records of some of charting's most renowned exponents; Applying technical analysis to recent FTSE company price charts; Providing alternative interpretations of 'live' charts; Identifying both successful and failed recommendations by professional chartists. An insight into the world of charting, this text includes information on where to start, timescales, basic components of a price chart and different types of chart. It should be of interest to investors who are less than fully conversant with technical analysis.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting balance of the use of charting.......2003-10-25

Blair provided a balanced perspective of the use of charting. In each case, he provided real examples where the interpretation of the charting method yield the expected result, and also those that didn't.

Blair advised a fair skeptism of using charting tools independently of other investment tools.

A broad overview of the common tools is provided, and this book is recommended for anyone who's getting into charting for the first time. He provided a concise description of each and its use, and also recommended a list of readings for those who would like to get into more details. Personally, this was a quick jump-start for me.

          This book is easy reading.

                    Book Description

Statistical mechanics is the science of predicting the observable properties of a multiple bodied system by studying the statistics of the behaviour of its individual constituents, whether they are atoms, molecules, photons, etc. It provides the link between macroscopic and microscopic states, and as such has the potential to be one of the most satisfying parts of an undergraduate science course - linking in an elegant manner the quantum world with everyday observations of systems containing large numbers of particles. This excellent text is designed to introduce the fundamentals of the subject of statistical mechanics at a level suitable for students who meet the subject for the first time. The treatment given here is designed to give the student a feeling for the topic of statistical mechanics without being held back by the need to understand complex mathematics. The text is concise and concentrates on the understanding of fundamental aspects. Numerous questions with worked solutions are given throughout.

This book is 100 pages or so but covers about 80% of my undergraduate statistical mechanics course. The text is very clear and well organized.A must have book for every one who studies SM for the first time.

                        Book Description

                        Three's company....

Best chums Sally, Jude, and Michael are living the single life in cool flats a mere stone's throw apart in London. But the girls find the sitcom life they love taking an unexpected twist when Michael's new girlfriend, Katie, moves in with him. Michael's a notorious womanizer -- he broke it off with Sally years ago -- and the girls have gotten used to his endless parade of brunettes. Sally acts like she's over Michael; Jude prides herself on knowing better; and they're both sure Katie's not going to last.

                        Four's a crowd.

Katie's not particularly thrilled that Michael's ex and her best friend live right across the street, but she makes the best of it. After all, things with Michael are going brilliantly, and he seems determined to commit to their future. But when another brunette from Michael's past arrives from Paris and Katie begins to fear that she's just another notch on Michael's bedpost, the girls realize that they're all just playing parts in Michael's drama. So what will his reaction be when they try to break free? Don't even think about it!

                        3 out of 5 stars Real Life & Love.......2005-06-21

This is story of real life and love. Michael is a playboy who changes girlfriends every other month. Sally is Michael's ex-girl and his best friend who still loves him. Katie is young Sally look-a-like and Michael new flavor of the month. Jude is the only realist in the group who finds herself in the middle of her friend's chaos. The friendship and love are so real who feel every emotion the characters go through. I would not say this was favorite read but very thought provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Even Think About It.......2005-06-09

AWESOME! Another amazing novel from Lauren Henderson! Her characters are real and honest, her story is compeling and true to life and while you're laughing at Lauren's wit you're also learning a bit about human behavior along the way! 3 cheers for Lauren on another wonderful novel.
P.S. If you're single or even if you just know someone who is single or even if you aren't single -- you have to read Lauren Henderson's "Jane Austen's Guide To Dating." It is the best, most honest, most helpful and most entertaining guide book on the subject. This guide will be the last book you'll need to read on the subject and you don't need to be an Austen fan or authority to learn a ton from Austen's wisdom and Henderson's application of Austen's wisdom to the single world in the 21st century.

4 out of 5 stars Sharp and absorbing.......2005-04-14

I thought this book was a massive improvement on Henderson's previous romantic comedy, "My Lurid Past." This novel was truly difficult to put down.

A comedy of manners, this novel follows the intertwined lives of Sally, Mike, and Jude. Sally and Mike used to date, but are still close friends and near-flatmates; Jude lives nearby as well. The three of them are inseparable until Mike starts dating the latest in his "parade of brunettes," a younger woman named Katie. Sally, who still has submerged feelings for her ex, predicts that Katie won't last, but when Katie gets pregnant, no one can predict what the outcome will be.

Henderson does a great job with plot twists and turns, and very engaging characters. Sally, Jude and Mike are so fully described that you can see what they look like and practically picture them in your living room. Henderson has a particular talent for warts-and-all description, where the reader becomes intimately familiar with every character's insecurities, Schadenfreude and sense of rivalry with the other characters.

My only complaint is that the plot twists toward the end of the book become increasingly difficult to believe, and this detracted from the story's "realness." Also, at the very end the story was predictable (although not until then, which was impressive).

4 out of 5 stars Chick lit with a razor edge.......2005-03-09

Lauren Henderson, known for the Samantha Jones mystery series, has been branching out into chick lit with a distinct edge. In "Don't Even Think About It," Katie moves in with her new boyfriend Michael. Michael's ex-girlfriend Sally and her best friend Jude live across the street and all three are very close, much to Katie's displeasure. Complicating matters are: the torch Sally has carried for Michael for nine years after their relationship ended, Michael's womanizing, Katie's accidental pregnancy, and the appearance of Sofie, a temperamental, egotistical French artist who was Michael's first love (and shattered his heart).

My only complaint is when the book spirals to a startling denoument it stops with the immediate fallout, then rushes to an epilogue and leaves out a few scenes I would have liked to see, but can't reveal without being a spoiler. Still, it's a nice read on a lazy afternoon.

4 out of 5 stars Descent -- Not Her Best Work.......2004-12-07

I have come to expect a lot from Lauren Henderson and was a bit let down by this book. The story is basically about 3 friends and the troubles that relationships bring. Especially when they are with one another. The three friends are well developed and their interactions are a wonderful read. But, the story reminds me of one of those books where the author doesn't know how to finish the book so the planet explodes. The book ends and you are left wondering why you spent the time, even with the great characters.

If you love good food, and music(and even if you do not) believe me this is the cook book for you. As you beat your eggs, and glaze your favorite dessert, you can dance, and sing to the sensual voice of Cuccina Dom. This would make the perfect gift for everyone! You can buy it for a firend, family member, and makes a great hostess gift! These recipes would be a great idea for couples or groups of friends to make in the kitchen. I have enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone.

How are lawyer jokes different from lawyers? Lawyer jokes never lose their appeal.
