Needs an editor.......2006-05-13

I have a shelf full of Java books ranging from broad beginner topics to specific, more advanced concepts. This book is part of the coursework for an intro to java college class. It's a typical intro book to the subject and it does cover the material fairly well. However, what kept me from rating this a 4 star were the typos. Unless you're already familiar with java, some of these errors can cause great confusion.

Chapter 4 demonstrates a try catch block, coded as the following

catchthe Math.P(NumberFormatException e)

Where did the "the Math.P" come from?

Chapter 5:
example: frame.isResizeable(true);

It spells Resizable like that twice on the same page. Secondly, that method returns a boolean and has no parameters. This alone cause classmates much trouble.

Can't wait to finish reading this book to see what other grand mistakes I can find.

The magnetic properties of silicates and phosphates are compiled in subvolume 27I. While subvolumes 27I1, 27I2, 27I3 and 27I4 (already published) deal with orthosilicates, sorosilicates, cyclosilicates, and inosilicates, respectively, the present subvolume 27I5 deals with phyllosilicates. Subvolume 27I5 has been spilt in two parts a and ß; part 27I5a discusses gillespites, apophyllites, natrolites, micas, smectites and related silicates. Further subvolumes are dedicated to other types of silicates (tectosilicates) and to phosphates. - Silicates are very complex systems, covering large classes of minerals as well as synthetic samples. Their crystal structure is discussed and atomic positions are given. In addition to magnetic properties, results of neutron diffraction studies, nuclear gamma resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, transport properties, dielectric and optical data are reviewed.

Description:
The investigation of unmatched ancient objects is an attentive and arduous activity to conservation scientists. An important aspect of art analysis is the question on sampling and avoiding damage on the artefact during the study. A possible way to maximize the information that is extracted from the historical object is using several sensitive micro-analytical techniques on the same micro samples. As an illustration of this multi-method approach, in this work, a canvas painting 'Virgin of Sorrows' was studied and its materials were analysed in order to roughly date and to authenticate this object of art. Proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE), neutron activation analysis (NAA), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used, obtaining successful results. These methods allowed identifying the different inorganic pigments (iron oxide, carbon black, white lead, Prussian blue) as well as indigo. Optical microscopy and SEM revealed the layered structure of the samples, while FT-IR enabled to determine the nature of the varnish used (shellac). By using these complementary techniques, it was possible to identify the materials in the painting, which are indicative for the period of manufacturing the artwork.

This is the best of the best, as far as I'm concerned. "You Can't Kill the Rooster" will crack up anyone raised in or currently living in the South - we all have known guys like David's younger brother Paul, a.k.a. The Rooster.

Sensational Sedaris..........2007-05-15

David Sedaris is one funny, talented man. It's one thing to read his work, but I heartily recommend you listen to him on audio cassette or CD...his delivery is nothing short of sensational. The only problem is, once you listen to one book on CD/tape, you are compelled to get them all...which I have, much to the delight of amazon.com!

Not quite as funny as "Naked" or "Me Talk Pretty One Day".......2006-12-28

David Sedaris is one of my favorite authors. This book is not quite as funny as some of his others, but certainly worth the read.

An Exception to the Rule.......2005-07-21

As a general rule, I avoid audio books. The actual texts are cheaper, and I find that I get a fuller experience of the book when I read it myself.

David Sedaris is the exception to that rule.
Don't get me wrong; I love reading his work. I've read everything I can by him and enjoyed every mintue. The exception is that as much as I enjoy reading his work, listening to him read it is all that much better.

Sedaris' voice is perfect; soft and dry like his humor. And since most of these stories and essays are autobiographical in nature, his reading takes on a kind of life that you can't get by reading it, it becomes more like a friend telling an anecdote at a party, it becomes personal.

Anybody can be slapstick. Anyone can put on a goofy voice and make you laugh by being silly. David Sedaris gives you more to laugh about, and is all the better for it. When you find yourself laughing out loud at his soft spoken, earnest phrases, you'll laugh some more just because. It's a wonderful experience.

Here's the scoop:

The stories and essays in the book are hilarious, but the audio version is not an exact duplication of the paper copy - some stories are missing, and others have been added. That's only part of the problem.

David Sedaris narrates, and he has a very monotone voice. If you sit there and listen carefully, you'll find the stories quite funny, but if you (like me) do mindless tasks while listening, you'll find yourself tuning out the narration without any effort. Then you'll have to go back and listen over again, only to tune out the next part. Amy Sedaris has small voice parts in the stories, and her voice is much better at grabbing attention. However, her parts are very small. I wish someone with a more enticing voice was chosen to narrate, because then this audiobook would be a gem.
