Description:
Nitrogen mineralization in PAHs contaminated soil in presence of Eisenia fetida amended with biosolid or vermicompost was investigated. Sterilized and unsterilized soil was contaminated with PAHs, added with E. fetida and biosolid or vermicompost and incubated aerobically for 70 days, while dynamics of inorganic N were monitored. Addition of E. fetida to sterilized soil increased concentration of NH"4^+ 100>mgNkg^-^1, while concentrations in unsterilized remained
<60mgNkg^-^1 except for soil amended with biosolid plus PAHs where it increased to >80mgkg^-^1. Addition of PAHs had no significant effect on concentration of NH"4^+ compared to the unamended soil, except in the soil added with biosolid. Addition of E. fetida to sterilized soil increased concentration of NO"2^- 15>mgNkg^-^1 while concentrations in unsterilized soil remained
<7.5mgNkg^-^1 except for soil amended with biosolid where it increased to >20mgkg^-^1. Addition of PAHs had no significant effect on concentration of NO"2^- compared to the unamended soil. Addition of biosolid and vermicompost increased concentration of NO"3^-, while addition of E. fetida decreased concentration of NO"3^- in biosolid amended soil. It was found that NH"4^+ and NO"2^- oxidizers were present in the gut of E. fetida, but their activity was not sufficient enough to inhibit a temporarily increase in concentrations of NH"4^+ and NO"2^-. Contamination with PAHs induced immobilization of N in biosolid or vermicompost amended soil, as did feeding of E. fetida on biosolid or vermicompost.

The removal of phenanthrene, anthracene and benzo(a)pyrene added at three different concentrations was investigated with or without earthworms (Eisenia fetida) within 11 weeks. Average anthracene removal by the autochthonous micro-organisms was 23%, 77% for phenanthrene and 13% for benzo(a)pyrene, while it was 51% for anthracene, 47% for benzo(a)pyrene and 100% for phenanthrene in soil with earthworms. At 50 and 100mg phenanthrene kg^-^1E. fetida survival was 91% and 83%, but at 150mgkg^-^1 all died within 15 days. Survival of E. fetida in soil amended with anthracene @?1000mgkg^-^1 and benzo(a)pyrene @?150mgkg^-^1 was higher than 80% and without weight loss compared to the untreated soil. Only small amounts of PAHs were detected in the earthworms. It was concluded that E. fetida has the potential to remove large amounts of PAHs from soil, but more work is necessary to elucidate the mechanisms involved.

In situ and laboratory measurements of aerobic respiratory and denitrifying activities were studied in the vadose zone (almost 2.5 m thick) of a fluvic hypercalcaric cambisol characterized by transitory anaerobic conditions. A field experiment was conducted in a bare soil, over a 7-month period starting just after maize harvest and incorporation of maize crop residues. Weather variables (air and soil temperature, rainfall), soil water content, soil solutes (NO"3^- and dissolved organic carbon) and soil gases (CO"2 and N"2O), were recorded throughout the experiment. Four soil layers were defined. Bacterial counts were performed in each layer using the most probable number (MPN) method. Aerobic respiratory and denitrifying activities were estimated from laboratory measurements. In situ microbial activity, as revealed by CO"2 and N"2O measurements in the soil atmosphere, was strongly influenced by weather. Laboratory measurements showed that potential aerobic respiratory activity (ARA) occurred throughout the soil profile, whereas semi-potential denitrifying activities SPDA (i.e. measured under organic-C limiting condition) occurred mainly in the top 30 cm soil layer. In the soil profile, the CO"2 concentration gradient was stronger than the N"2O concentration gradient. Seasonal variations in microbial activities increased with depth, whereas DOC concentrations, and variations in those concentrations, decreased with depth, suggesting that DOC quality investigations are necessary in the deep vadose zone to understand microbial activities seasonal variations. Laboratory measurements of potential activities agreed well with in situ microbial activity in natural environmental conditions. NO"3^- was a stronger limiting factor for SPDA than was denitrifier density in the soil profile.

In this study, we used a DNA fingerprinting technique (PCR-DGGE) to investigate if bacteria present in an activated EM suspension (EM-A) were able to maintain or reach significant relative abundances after addition to slurry manure. We also investigated effects of the addition of EM-A to slurry manure on nitrogen losses from the manure and grass biomass production after application of the manure as organic fertilizer. EM^(R) and Agri-mest^(R) were tested in a factorial set-up so that the factors could be distinguished. Effective Organisms (EM) is a mixture of several effective, disease-depressing micro-organisms. Agri-mest contains energized minerals, which will influence biochemical processes occurring in the manure. Different EM-stocks, and EM-Active suspensions prepared by different users showed large variation in bacterial community structure and, thus, low reproducibility. Through the addition of Agri-mest to the slurry manure, loss of inorganic nitrogen from the slurry manure appeared to be reduced. Moreover, after application of such Agri-mest slurry as an organic fertilizer, nitrogen uptake by grass was reduced. Addition of EM-A had no measurable effects on the bacterial diversity and the chemical composition of the slurry manure. In a pot experiment, also no effects of EM on nitrogen uptake and grass biomass production were recorded.

A wonderful story of a Napoleonic hero.......2005-01-28
I knew Arthur Conan Doyle from his Sherlock Holmes series although I have not read any title from that. The "Exploits and Adventures of Birgadier Gerard" is surely one of the finest novels about the Napoleonic era and I highly recommend it to any fan of the Grand Armee and its battle hardened soldiers. The story begins with the long retired Brigadier starting to recall his war memories for the shake of his audience, over a glass of wine. And what a fascinating carreer did he have! He was a romantic lover, a proud Frenchman, an honest man, a terrific swordsman, a dashing cavalryman, and a soldier absolutely faithful to his duty: the real epitome of the French hussar who according to Colonel Lassale "should not live beyond the age of 30"! The old Brigadier explains with graphic detail and an amusing dose of egotism and pride how he lost his ear for the love of a girl in Venice, how he helped French troops to storm the spanish fortress of Saragossa, how he saved a whole army in the Peninsula, how he extricated himself from a grevious tactical mistake in Russia, how he beat the Englishmen in their national sport of fox-hunting and how Destiny prevented him from taking part in the climactic battle of Waterloo, a fact that Gerard honestly believes that doomed Napoleon! To build his story Doyle took many interesting facts and legends from real biographies of the period, like that of Baron de Marbot, but he made his story so enjoyable and colourful that is incomperable in terms of advenures and amusement.

I was expecting to be disappointed with these stories since I knew I would be comparing them to the Sherlock Holmes stories. But I enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed the Holmes stories and when I had finished the book I found myself wishing that Doyle had written more stories about the Brigadier Gerard. Gerard is a very different character than Holmes but the characterization is just as brilliant. I highly recommend this book.
Classic entertainment for Napoleonic war enthusiasts.......2002-08-27
Brigadier Gerard is everything that a Briton of Conan Doyle's time thought was an exemplar of the Napoleonic officer - and to a certain extent a charicature of the French themselves. Hopelessly and ridiculously brave, completely lacking in appreciation of the fine British virtues of sportsmanship, a devotion to L'Empereur, rather dim, obsessed with his honor and the honor of La France, and yet rather admirable too in his prickly way.
In this fine book the Brigadier regales us with stories of his youth, when most of Europe was part of the French Empire and opportunities abounded for young men who looked good in cavalry uniform. Gerard tells the story with no irony, but the reader laughs a good deal at the absurdities of the hero. When attempting to shoot the ash off a cigar he destroys the whole cigar instead to the dismay of its smoker who is smoking it at the time. Clearly, Gerard maintains, the pistol is at fault. On a few occasions he succeeds when all expect him to fail and as a result his success is actually a failure. The stories encompass many of the great events of the Napoleonic wars: the horrors of partisan fighting in Spain, the invasion of Russia, war in the German states and Prussia, even capture by the British. Always the stories are superbly told with a very fine eye for realistic detail and they are often quite gripping. Again this is one of those books I am amazed has never been made into a film or a TV series.
George MacDonald Fraser has taken a good deal of the Gerard style for his Flashman series, although of course the two characters are poles apart in morality.
I recommend this book to all lovers of history novels and also to anyone who just likes to read superb stories in the grand old manner, where manly men are engaged in "honest" combat, and where evil enemies, treacherous peasants, and duplicitous politicos usually meet their doom under Gerard's cavalry saber.
A Marvelously Thick-Headed and Gallant Sharpe.......2002-03-26
For those who only know Conan Doyle via his Sherlock Holmes tales, his second most popular fictional creation may come as quite a revelation. With the eighteen "Brigadier Gerard" tales collected here, he created an affectionately mocking portrait of a swashbuckling French cavalry officer of the Napoleonic era. Gerard is a wonderful comic character, in his own not so humble opinion the foremost rider and swordsmen in all the Grand Armeé, he's also a favorite of the ladies, a stickler on points of honor, first volunteer for hazardous missions-and unbeknownst to him, marvelously thickheaded.
His "exploits and adventures" are presented as reminisces by the old grizzled officer, long into his dotage. Since he doesn't tell these in chronological order, this can be momentarily disconcerting, but only momentarily. Each episode runs approximately 20 to 30 pages and generally concerns some individual adventure he's assigned to or stumbles into. These are uniformly entertaining old-fashioned adventures in which Gerard sometimes triumphs, sometimes fails, but always upholds the honor and glory of the Emperor. He makes an interesting counterpart to Bernard Cornwell's gritty and equally heroic fictional British veteran of the Napoleonic wars, Richard Sharpe.
This new edition is to be commended, but it could have been further improved with the addition of a few maps, a general chronology of the Napoleonic era, and a glossary of the frequently used military terms of the era. Still, these are quibbles, and anyone with more than a passing familiarity with Napoleonic history will have no problems enjoying Gerard's tales.
Great stories from a great writer.......2002-03-19
Step away from your love of Holmes for a moment, and relish the thought of the imagination that brought you the Great Detective at work on other characters. If you can do that, then you will have to read some of Conan Doyle's other works. As a long-time fan of Holmes, I thoroughly enjoyed the Bridadier Gerard stories. Gerard views his life through the lens of his elephantine ego, and his exploits will make you laugh out loud...I guarantee it!! Yes, you have read all of the Sherlock Holmes stories again and again...now allow yourself to sample other dishes in the Conan Doyle banquet and you will not be disappointed.

It is surprising how funny Conan Doyle could be sometimes. Brigadier Gerard is a wonderfully conceited, rather dim-witted but brave and generous-hearted cavalry officer in Napoleon's Army. His adventures are a delight to read.
