The issue of organizational legitimacy is increasingly gaining the attention of researchers and managers. While legitimacy can be described in a number of ways, defined by the harder social sciences it has usually been considered a static, one-dimensional characteristic. As a result, previous studies have often failed to explore organization's operational strategies for gaining wide social legitimacy.
The goal of Claim, Intent, and Persuasion: Organizational Legitimacy and the Rhetoric of Corporate Mission Statements is to explore how organizations enact strategies to gain legitimacy. The book employs a pluralistic definition of legitimacy that draw its concepts from the fields of organizational theory, sociology, political science and law. The dynamics of the legitimation process are explored through a study of corporate mission statements analyzed from a semiotic perspective. The book argues that various interpretations of the legitimation process can coexist through differing narrative strategies that offer corporations alternate ways to present themselves internally and externally. By setting up a multi-faceted theory of organizational legitimacy, supported by an empirical study of corporation mission statements, this book offers a new, more integrated interpretation of the legitimation process that seeks to advance the dialogue regarding the political and institution views of organizations.

These proceedings deal with the relationship between species composition of freshwater phytoplankton and the trophic gradient. Particular regard is paid to the composite question, what lives where and why? Overview papers report the state of the art and suggest that the trophic spectrum appears to be a probabilistic outcome of several dimensions of variability that impinge upon phytoplankton species selection. Studies on community structure span all latitudes from those of Antarctica to equatorial Brazil, and also include reports on light and nutrient gradients, pH and fish-stock effects on species composition. Seasonal and longterm phytoplankton dynamics in lakes of varying trophic status are also considered. Finally, studies on the taxonomy and autoecology of some groups (e.g. Volvocales, Chrysophytes and Euglenophytes) living at the extremes of the trophic spectrum contribute to our knowledge of this usually neglected phytoplankton. This is the first time that a book covers such a topic, and it will prove an excellent source of information to anyone working on phytoplankton ecology and ecological indicators. Volume 4 of Biomembranes covers endocytosis, exocytosis and related processes. A major role of the plasma membrane is as a permeability barrier, keeping the inside of the cell inside and the outside, outside. Mechanisms must then exist to allow movement of material between the cell and its environment. One mechanism for export from the cell is by exocytosis, a process in which the membranes of secretory vesicles fuse with the plasma membrane releasing the contents of the vesicle into the extracellular medium. The process has been studied in particular depth for the release of neurotransmitters at the synapse. Import into the cell is possible by the process of receptor-mediated endocytosis in which selected plasma membrane proteins are internalizes; when these proteins are receptors for macromolecules, the result is uptake of the macromolecule. Transferring, the low-density lipoprotein, and asialoglycoproteins are all taken up into cells in this way. Phagocytosis, the ingestion of cells and cell fragments by neutrophils and macrophages, also involves receptors - on the phagocytic membrane - of which the best studied are those for the Fc domain of IgG, for the third component of complement, and for the mannose/fructose carbohydrates. Protection of a host against infection can also be achieved by damaging the integrity of the plasma membrane of the invading organism. This is the strategy evolved by the cytotoxic T lymphocytes, which produce a pore-forming toxin, perforin. Volume 4 of Biomembranes explores the structures and mechanisms involved in these biologically and medically important processes.

Satirizing the Expat.......2007-08-19

This book is such a hoot! The author satirizes arrogant expats and the travel memoir genre in this witty novel that actually had me laughing out loud. It's even funnier if (like me) you enjoy expat-in-a-foreign-country memoirs (Under the Tuscan Sun, et al), as Belinda's diary entries are clear riffs on the theme. Other reviewers here are taking the recipes seriously, but I read them as poking fun of the numerous travel memoirs out there which do include recipes. The author's writing style is breezy and clever, her characters well-crafted to offer just the right zing. Terrific fun!

Very tongue-in-cheek! .......2006-11-07

As an Italian-American who hasn't had the opportunity to visit my ancestral homeland yet, I treasure delightful stories like this!! The author has a wonderful style of writing which transported me to the beautiful setting, making me feel as though I was a guest in the B & B or a member of the community. Belinda was not a likeable person at all, and it's a wonder she had any friends amongst her wonderful neighbors. She ended up with a fate much better than she deserved! The "Mommie Dearest" manner in which Belinda treated her daughter was downright abusive and made me cringe. Yet, that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story one iota because the author was a master at presenting the scenes in a lighthearted and humorous manner. This was exemplified in Belinda's journal entries in which her perceptions of the situation were so far from reality, demonstrating that she wasn't truly a malicious person, but rather a misguided one. The Italian country recipes that closed each entry was a delightful touch.

RECOMMEND THIS ONE AS A VERY FUN READ.......2006-04-15

I found my self smirking and actually laughing out loud several times during the reading of this one. The author is quite insightful and certainly has great ability in being able to express herself in a very humerous way. The author uses a very easy reading sytle, perfect and appropriate syntax and is obviously a born story teller. Being somewhat into food, and having a wife who is beyond expert in the art of cooking, I enjoyed the inserted recipes throughout the book. If you are looking for a good, funny, relaxing read, then this one is for you. Recommend it highly.

Funny and entertaining.......2006-03-25

I really enjoyed this very humorous book about a snobbish and overbearing B&B owner in Tuscany. The book alternates between Belinda's diary entries - her version of what her life is like - and what her life is really like. The difference is really funny.

The other characters in the book are great as well - from Belinda's timid daughter Mary, to the resident writer who does more drinking than writing, to the brash American who opens up a rival B&B. While they may sound stereotypical, the characters are not one-dimentional and they work really well in this story.

To add to the enjoyment of the book, Belinda includes some really delicious Italian recipes in her journal as well.

If you want a bit of well written fun, you will like this book.

Funnier than "Under the Tuscan Sun".......2005-08-15

I have lately been drawn to books about Tuscany, heck it's the closest I'll ever get to going there and this book did not let me down. Yes, it has the occasional rustic recipe but the characters are what brings this book to life. I am sure everyone has a "Belinda" in their family and what she does left me laughing out loud at times and at other times feeling very sorry for her. I so thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
