Global Development Finance 2004: Analysis and Statistical Appendix
World Bank Manufacturer: World Bank Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821357409 |
Book Description
The external financing environment facing developing countries has brightened. In 2003, as global growth gained momentum, private capital flows to developing countries increased to $200 billion - their highest level in five years. Harnessing these gains to promote long-term investment and growth is the key theme of Global Development Finance 2004.By providing a comprehensive review of recent trends in and prospects for all development-related flows (including debt, equity, official aid, and workers' remittances), Global Development Finance 2004 enables government officials, economists, investors, financial consultants, academics and policymakers in the development community to better understand, manage, and promote the key challenge of financing development in today's globalized environment.
I: Analysis and Summary Tables reviews recent trends in financial flows to developing countries and assesses the global outlook in light of the recent economic recovery. It highlights sources of vulnerability and risk in the recovery in private flows, notably the likely increases in interest rates in the advanced economies, volatility in major currencies and financial markets stemming from large global current-account imbalances, and fears of policy slippages in macroeconomic management in developing countries.
II: Summary and Country Tables includes comprehensive data for 136 countries that report under the World Bank Debtor Reporting System, and summary data for regions and income groups. It contains data on total external debt stocks and flows, aggregates, and key debt ratios, and provides a detailed, country-by-country picture of debt.
Global Development Finance 2004 debt data are also available on CD-ROM and online, with more than 200 historical time series from 1970 to 2002, and country group estimates for 2003.

Ethiopia: Failure of Land Reform and Agricultural Crisis (Contributions in Afro-American and African Studies)
Kidane Mengisteab Manufacturer: Greenwood Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0313274231 |
Book Description
This book attempts to explain the failure of Ethiopia's land reform and the problem of transformation of the peasantry through a holistic approach, by pulling together numerous factors and themes. The book first defines a comprehensive land reform as a process that influences the deprived peasant masses economically and politically. It then attempts to establish the relevance of such a process to the transformation of the peasant mode of production to a surplus producing exchange economy and consequently, to socioeconomic development of less developed countries. Ethiopia: Failure of Land Reform and Agricultural Crisis also attempts to identify specific attributes of successful democratization processes (comprehensive land reforms) on the basis of which it evaluates and explains the failure of the Ethiopian land reform. Suitable for research, this book should appeal to scholars and students of development in general and African political economy and African revolutions in particular.

High Pressure Geochemistry & Mineral Physics, Volume 9: Basics for Planetology and Geo-Material Science (Developments in Geochemistry)
S. Mitra Manufacturer: Elsevier Science ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0444512667 |
Book Description
Significant achievements have been made at the cross-roads of physics and planetary science. In the second half of the twentieth century, the discipline of planetary sciences has witnessed three major episodes which have revolutionized its approach and content: (i) the plate-tectonic theory, (ii) human landing and discoveries in planetary astronomy and (iii) the extraordinary technical advancement in high P-T studies, which have been abetted by a vast improvement in computational methods. Using these new computational methods, such as first principles including ab initio models, calculations have been made for the electronic structure, bonding, thermal EOS, elasticity, melting, thermal conductivity and diffusivity.
In this monograph, the boundaries of the definitions of a petrologist, geochemist, geophysicist or a mineralogist have been willfully eliminated to bring them all under the spectrum of "high-pressure geochemistry" when they deal with any material (quintessentially a chemical assemblage) - terrestrial or extraterrestrial - under the conditions of high-pressure and temperature. Thus, a petrologist using a spectrometer or any instrument for high-pressure studies of a rock or a mineral, or a geochemist using them for chemical synthesis and characterization, is better categorized as a "high-pressure geochemist" rather than any other kind of disciplinarian.
The contents of this monograph bring together, under one cover, apparently disparate disciplines like solid-earth geophysics and geochemistry as well as material science and condensed-matter physics to present a thorough overview of high pressure geochemistry. Indeed, such interdisciplinary activities led to the discovery of new phenomena such as high P-T behaviour in metal oxides (e.g. Mott transition), novel transitions such as amorphization, changes in order-disorder in crystals and the anomalous properties of oxide melts.

Backlund and Darboux Transformations: The Geometry of Solitons (Crm Proceedings & Lecture Notes, V. 29)
Aarms-Crm Workshop , and A. A. Coley Manufacturer: American Mathematical Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821828037 |
Book Description
This book is devoted to a classical topic that has undergone rapid and fruitful development over the past 25 years, namely Bäcklund and Darboux transformations and their applications in the theory of integrable systems, also known as soliton theory. The book consists of two parts. The first is a series of introductory pedagogical lectures presented by leading experts in the field. They are devoted respectively to Bäcklund transformations of Painlevé equations, to the dressing method and Bäcklund and Darboux transformations, and to the classical geometry of Bäcklund transformations and their applications to soliton theory. The second part contains original contributions that represent new developments in the theory and applications of these transformations.
Both the introductory lectures and the original talks were presented at an International Workshop that took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada). This volume covers virtually all recent developments in the theory and applications of Bäcklund and Darboux transformations.

A Dressing Method in Mathematical Physics (Mathematical Physics Studies)
Evgeny Doktorov , and Sergey Leble Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Accessories:
ASIN: 1402061382 |
Book Description
This monograph systematically develops and considers the so-called "dressing method" for solving differential equations (both linear and nonlinear), a means to generate new non-trivial solutions for a given equation from the (perhaps trivial) solution of the same or related equation. The primary topics of the dressing method covered here are: the Moutard and Darboux transformations discovered in XIX century as applied to linear equations; the Bäcklund transformation in differential geometry of surfaces; the factorization method; and the Riemann-Hilbert problem in the form proposed by Shabat and Zakharov for soliton equations, plus its extension in terms of the d-bar formalism.
Throughout, the text exploits the “linear experience” of presentation, with special attention given to the algebraic aspects of the main mathematical constructions and to practical rules of obtaining new solutions. Various linear equations of classical and quantum mechanics are solved by the Darboux and factorization methods. An extension of the classical Darboux transformations to nonlinear equations in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions, as well as its factorization, are also discussed in detail. What’s more, the applicability of the local and non-local Riemann-Hilbert problem-based approach and its generalization in terms of the d-bar method are illustrated via various nonlinear equations.

Book Description
Over the years, readers of Golf magazine have come to know and love Major General (Ret.) Sir Richard Gussett, the raucous imaginary uncle featured in David Feherty's column "Sidespin." In this first volume of his misadventures, Gussett sets his sights on the most prestigious prize in golf, the petrified middle finger of St. Andrew, patron saint of Scotland. Presiding over the world's most cantankerous golf club, Gussett must motivate his members through battles with incontinence, single malt Scotch, and a litany of other unmentionable afflictions in a "friendly" competition with their ancient rivals, the notorious McGregor clan. Anyone who loves the game or knows someone who does will be unable to resist Feherty's hilarious storytelling and golfing gravitas.Customer Reviews:

Pretty funny, though a little over the top.......2004-03-11
The writing is okay, though it leaves something to be desired, and even the most die-hard Feherty fan will grow weary of the barrage of bathroom jokes. Do we really need to know that a caddy pooped his pants in an airplane once (although the subsequent episode involving that caddy and a red sweatshirt is one of the funnier moments in the book)?
I laughed quite a bit at this book, and even if it was a little heavy-handed with the toilet humor, it has some absolutely hilarious moments. If you like golf and David Feherty's sense of humor, then you'll enjoy this book.
