If you have never been a project manager, and suddenly you need to learn rules of the game, this is a book I would recommend you to use as a reference material. It is easy to read, has real life examples and various templates related to project management are presented in this book. Highly recommended.

We just finished a 2yr project using this text.......2002-09-15

We (26 person team) just finished a 2+ year project using On Time Within Budget as our process guide. Bottom line: the project came in 7 weeks late -- not bad for a company used to 6 to 12 month schedule overruns. We'll do better next time with more experience on the methods described in the book. Advice to others: the chapters on estimation, standards, and risk analysis are great. The chapters on software teams, quality assurance and testing are good pointers to what we needed to know, but we also used other books on these subjects to fill in more details that we needed. Most everyone liked the epilogue (pulling it all together). This book helped to pull us out of the dark ages into modern software project management. Strongly recommended!

Good reference even for non-software managers.......2002-03-27

I don't usually write reviews but I was prompted to do this one because I strongly disagree with a preceding review. I am an EE senior manager and software development had always been a mystery to me until I got hold of On Time, Within Budget. I particularly found the following chapters helpful: Chapter 1 which includes reasons for project success and failure, Chapter 2 on risk management and how to reduce the cost of risk events, Chapter 5 on the management of software engineers, and most especially the Epilogue on pulling it all together, which provides a great overall perspective.

This book is full of real-life examples; it was clearly written by someone who has been down in the trenches. This adds credibility to the methods described.

I have learned a lot from the book and I use it as a reference regularly.

Probably best for a techie moving into a management rolw.......2002-03-12

As a previous reviewer wrote, I was truly dismayed at the level of technical expertise tha the readers of this text are assumed to have. The book definitely contains several gems, but non-technical managers would be better off finding other sources that are more geared for their skill base.

For example, I enjoyed Chapter 9 which described the major development standards on a relatively high level. However, the exercises at the end of the chapter dealt into the intricacies of the standards, which was not a level of detail achieved within the chapter text.

Also, many of the other exercises within the chapters seem more related to system design than to schedule and budget estimation, which I assumed would be the crux of the book.

So, this book may be best read by technical personnel moving into a management position, but for non-technical personnel I would recommend finding another source of information.

This book was adopted as the standard text by our company.......2001-11-17

I used On Time Within Budget at a post grad course last year on software project management (we switched mid-course from the 2nd edition to the 3rd). After the course I brought it to the attention of our Software Process Office at our company and in July it was adopted as the standard text to be used by all our project managers. In the last 4 months we have introduced risk analysis, standard status reporting, and stepwise estimation. We are planning to start preparing for an SEI assessment early next year. Everyone's guide is the Bennatan book (we are also now using the IEEE standards and the SEI CMM guideline books).
I don't think our company would have taken all this on without this book. It doesn't only suggest what to do it also explains why.

This book contains a number of very useful articles (many reprints) to persons interested in the evolution of early life. For example, there is T.R. Cech's article, A Model for the RNA-catalyzed Replication of RNA, shwoing that RNA enzymes exist which can act as poly-C polymerases. Based on the existence of such enzymes, this article hypothesizes prebiotic template-dependent synthesis of RNA by an RNA polymerase itself made of RNA.

I bought this book for my Dad after we had a terrific experience at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant in Charleston, SC. My Dad is very ill and on oxygen, but the trip to the restaurant really perked him up. He loved the dish he had there, and the chef was kind enough to come out of the kitchen and tell Dad how to cook it! Although the book doesn't have that specific recipe, it has dozens of others just as good.

We found this book at our local library and our teenage son immediately "locked on" to it. He loves Bubba Gump as well as the recipes in this book. He has taken such an interest in it that he has learned to cook from it. His favorite recipi is "Bubba's Beer-Batter Shrimp." He prepares it in a fondue pot and our entire family reaps the benifits. My husband and I prefer the "Shrimp and Feta Vermicelli." It adds a little adventure to cooking with shrimp. The variety of recipes in the book make it a "sure thing" for shrimp lovers.

Gump & Co. is a good book. You'd have to read the first book (Forrest Gump) to get whet happens in this book. Winston Groom has a way of making every thing that he writes funny. Because Forrest Gump is "special in the head", he gets into trouble.
A very good book that most people should read.

Killed.......2006-08-02

It seems like after the entire fiasco with Winston Groom and not getting any money from what the Forest Gump movie made.....he decided to go on a rampage and just rip the entire Forest Gump image apart.

Most of the time people say that the book is better than the movie, it's the other way around in ths case. Groom was saved if he was putting out BS like this.

Shockingly bad.......2005-10-17

I bought both "Forrest Gump" and "Gump & Co." at the same time. After reading "Forrest Gump", I was quite excited to read the sequel. I was so excited in fact, that as soon as I put down "Forrest Gump", I started reading "Gump & Co." that same night. What a shocking disappointment! I always wondered why there was never a sequel to the movie, so I searched the net to discover that Winston Groom decided not to license the story. After hearing his tale of woe and learning about "Hollywood Accounting" (Winston Groom never saw a dime from the $380 million that the Forrest Gump movie made, due to what should be an illegal accounting practice known as Hollywood Accounting.) , I was not surprised he would not sell the story. It seemed to me that he took out his anger on Hollywood by using his pen to cut down all those with whom he has issue - politicians, hollywood actors and directors, and the military. On the other hand, he casts a happy light on those he loves most- simple people, simple things, and those with internal character (flaws and all). What it produced was a main character that, despite his best efforts to the contrary, is unable to grow as a person until the very end of the book. The whole story was formulaic, with hardly a surprise until the very end.

Not worth 1 star. What a waste of time!.......2005-02-08

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Forrest Gump" as well as seeing the movie. In fact, I still own copies of both. So when I found "Gump & Co." at a local used books store I was excited at the prospect of wrapping myself into the delightful world of Forrest Gump once again. Hey, there is even a review from Kinky Friedman right on the front cover so this must be good! How wrong that turned out to be! Forrest becomes the fall guy for every down turn event of the 80s decade. From New Coke to Iran Contra to the Exxon Valdez to meeting Tom Hanks (wherein Hanks blabs off some "Gumpisms" -- ugh!!!) to accidentally capturing Sadam Hussein. Give me a break! When the author had Forrest & Little Forrest getting tossed into the White Water scandal I finally decided I had had enough and I jumped to the last 2 pages. This was a waste of time. I have no doubt why there isn't a sequel to the Oscar winning movie.

Yeah, I finished it. If I could be very blunt with just two words, it sucks! I'm wondering what happened! Forrest Gump was brilliant. This was flat out retardo talk the whole way through. The ghost of Jenny, OOOHH! Real original, Groom. Lt. Dan, reunited? That was actually ok.

If there was 1 thing I could actually pin point and agree with 100%, it would have to be a kid's reaction to his new creation, New Coke when he said, "EEWW!! This tastes like [...]" Yeah, and it read like it, too! 100 pounds of pure waste of it, along with a real waste of talent. I ain't readin' no more of Winston Groom! If you wanted a best selling sequel, write something that actually sells. Not over 350 pages of pure BS! I at least hope his effort was worth it. What a waste of time. What a shame!
