Academic style but very useful........2006-11-05

The book is written to be used in colleges but is very useful for junior dba. The book walk you through the oracle B & R step-by-step. By the time you finish the book and do all the assignments you come out with a lot of information. I will definitely recommend this book to someone who is trying to learn Oracle BR and especially the oracle magic tool "Recovery Manager, RMAN".

This book is good if you have a good instructor who can help you in doing the practices.

If you try to study the book by yourself, preparing to get a lot of headache.

For example: In chapter 7: Performing backup Operations with Recovery Manager.

I try to do backup using RMAN-Enterprise Manager.

I stucked. The backup failed so many times. The error is: VNI-2015

I tried to get help from internet, reading so many articles about how to solve VNI-2015.

Many explanations, but all of them don't work.

Lastly, I remember METALINK from Oracle.

The problem is: METALINK is just for certain people. Not everyone can access Metalink. Lucky me, my Professor give me his user name/password for us to do research in Metalink.

Finally, I got the correct answer from Metalink to solve the problem of VNI-2015.

In conclusion: You need to have a good instructor OR you will stuck forever

Fundamentals 2 - A students perspective.......2003-11-18

I am a student of Dr. Morris-Murphy at Valencia Community College in Orlando Florida and currently studing under the Doctor as I prepare for the last of my Oracle DBA certification exams.
This, her second book matches the style of her presentation of Oracle Backup & Recovery in class; clear, precise and simple to understand. Each of the 15 chapters contains Hands On Assignments for students to get realtime experience on recover and backup of lost information.
After using this book during her class I highly recommend that DBA's and DBD's or students studying Oracle9i who are preparing for the certification exam and should have this book sitting next to their Sybex Backup & Recovery book.
Because SQL/Plus and Backup & Recovery are the two hardest aspects of Oracle to grasp these two books by Dr Murphy are a must, I recommend very strongly that anybody who is in the field of Oracle9i or Oracle19Gg should place a copy of both books on their shelf for reference

From the author: We examined the vocal responsiveness of chicken (Gallus gallus) embryos at the pipped egg stage to determine if they were able to regulate their thermal environment by soliciting heat from a surrogate parent. There was no overall effect on vocalizations of exposure to 20 [degrees] C or 45 [degrees] C relative to the normal incubation temperature of 37.8 [degrees] C. There was, however, a general trend towards increased calling as the time of hatching approached. There was also some indication that embryos tested in the late stages of hatching (ringing) vocalized more in the cold, then became relatively silent when rewarmed. When cold-challenged embryos were given 2 min of rewarming (surrogate brooding) in response to their calls body temperature was slightly but significantly elevated above cold only exposed controls. Unlike previously reported anecdotal evidence suggesting a strong vocal response to cold, our results suggest chicken embryos show only weak incipient vocal response to temperature that begins to increase late in incubation and becomes fully functional only after hatching. Unlike other species tested to date, the developmental progression of behavioral and metabolic thermoregulation appear to be tightly linked in this species.

somewhat silly, but still very enjoyable.......2007-06-10

I am very occasional reader of comics, but I thought this one
was quite entertaining. The series was recommended in a recent
NYT article, so I decided to take a look. The art does not compare
to the French greats like Moebius, but it fits the story. My understanding
is that this is not representative of the other entries in the series,
but I'd still recommend it.

Joann Sfar, Dungeon: The Early Years, vol. 1: The Night Shirt (Nantier Ball Minoustchine, 2005)

Did you know Hyacinthe used to be a crimefighter? It's true! Sfar, Trondheim, and Blain give you the skinny in The Night Shirt, volume I of Dungeon: The Early Years, which deals with the care and feeding of the young Hyacinthe, who finds himself transformed (through no fault of his own, mind you) into a masked crusader for justice after going to the big city to live with his corrupt uncle.

My initial impression of the book was "starts slow and gets better as it goes on," but I've come to realize that "gets better" was not the book, it's me-- I got used to the layout, which is often mediocre at best, with everything crammed into far too small a space.

Not one of Dungeon's best volumes, but if you're a fan, you'll get a kick out of it. ** ½
