This book is a guide to Perl 6 language features, as well as an advanced teaching guide for Perl 5. It’s the most up-to-date Perl book available. Examples are provided for both Perl 5 when using modules to back port Perl 6 features, and Perl 6 native examples. This book’s pragmatic approach shows you how to bootstrap new features onto the code you write day-to-day.
Perl 5 has long been missing important features but no agreement could be reached on the form they should take in the language, or even if they should be included. The announcement of the Perl 6 project has spurred development of Perl 5. As features are accepted into the Perl 6 design and Larry Wall finalizes the form it will take, many features are being added back into Perl 5. Perl 5.9, with opinional extensions from CPAN, hardly resembles the original Perl 5 language that first came out 9 years ago. Modern Perl is cleaner, more helpful, less error prone, more expressive, more scalable, and better suited to what people want to do in this day and age.

As good as it's going to get.......2005-05-12
Perl 6 is pretty confusing no matter how you cut it. Scott does a nice job here of demonstrating the features of six. And he does it in a way that makes more sense than the Apocalypse stuff that Larry writes. If you are going to be using six as soon as it comes out then you will want to have a look at this in the meantime. It's the first book or article I have read that explains the new features in ways that I can understand.

Walters presents his book for Perl 5 programmers, who might be eyeing Perl 6 and wondering if they should migrate. So the chapters are designed with the new Perl 6 features explicitly demarcated and usually at the start of each chapter. The book emphasises what is different about Perl 6.
But it is also more than for Perl 5 readers. The book can be read as a complete explanatory text on Perl 6 OR Perl 5, for someone who has never programmed in any version of Perl. It shows that Perl 6 is in part a competitive response by the Perl community to the presence and influence of other languages. Overall, this evolutionary pressure benefits you, as a Perl programmer, by giving you a more powerful language.
For me, the most interesting section was at the end. There's a nifty discussion of possible set operations, implemented in a simple syntax. Plus other more abstract computer science topics. Try exercising your imagination by perusing these pages, even if you can't see an immediate need for them in your coding.
Also - it was good form for Walters, in an earlier review, to say that he wished he could've blogged without rating his own book.
This book rocks!.......2005-02-12
This is a clever, well-written book that will likely put your mind at ease if you are anxious about Perl 6. Scott makes interesting and intellegent comments, and provides good code samples. This book should appeal to Perl programmers of any skill level, and is not as dry as most programming books. An enjoyable read!

Here's some trivia you might not otherwise find, and then I'm going to try to clear up exactly what this book *is*.
25% of the royalties on sales of this title have been pledged to the Electronic Frountier Foundation and The Perl Foundation. These two organizations have shaped the world for the better for those of us who love to express ourselves creatively using computers and the 'Net. Being a hacker wouldn't be the same without cryptography or Perl.
http://perl6now.com has a sample chapter, Multidimensional Arrays, which talks about PDL, the Perl Data Language, and doing vectorized operations on light weight, storage efficient large arrays. It also has all of the frontmatter including the Introduction and detailed Table of Contents. The Introduction is the best explanation of the book. There's also a link to my blog and other goodies.
Perl steals madly from other languagers (and always has); Perl 6 stole the coolest batch of features yet; _Perl 6 Now_ introduces these bizarre, alien, potent ideas using Perl 5 CPAN implementations and nearly 800 code listings.
First, it's a decidedly a Perl 5 book. It's about language features recently introduced in Perl 5, language features implemented as CPAN modules that intentionally or coincidentally parallel Perl 6's new features, and it's about advanced use of Perl 5's features to do things that Perl 6 tries to streamline or generalize to put into common reach. Perl 6's syntax will make learning Perl easier for novices but learning a new syntax just plain isn't that interesting to most of us. There are Perl 6 syntax examples but these are secondary to the introduction of the idea that spurred the change. Every idea included has a Perl 5 implementation. There is no hand-waving. Everything works in Perl 5 and everything is relavent to Perl 5. Making so many of Perl 6's ideas work on Perl 5 is no small task - this book contains hundreds of hacks, module demonstrations, tricks, and so on. This isn't a book on Parrot and it's not a book on PONIE (yet, though hopefully a second edition will do better). It only teaches how to incorporate the best parts of most of the languages on Earth to write some seriously mental Perl. If you enjoyed _Object Oriented Perl_, this book is for you.

Perfect for early adopters of Perl 6.......2005-01-24
This book simplifies the transition from coding in Perl 5 to coding in Perl 6. Common elements and themes between the two languages are demonstrated, along with an introduction to the advances found in Perl 6. Scott outlines a vast set of features using specific examples easily understood by Perl programmers of all levels.
Scott also uses humor throughout to make this Perl 6 guide a fun read. I especially enjoyed an example using pet washing to illustrate type checking (Type Safety chapter)! The expert's voice indeed - I hope we see more books from Mr. Walters.

This book gives an introduction to supersymmetric quantum mechanics and a comprehensive review of its applications in quantum and statistical physics. The classical version and the quantum version of Witten's model are studied in detail. Exact spectral properties of the model for the so-called shape invariant potentials are discussed. The quasi-classical quantization rules are derived. The topics covered also include the supersymmetric structure of a classical stochastic dynamical system obeying the Langevin or the Fokker-Planck equation, Pauli's Hamiltonian and its application to the paragmagnetism of a non-interacting electron gas in two and three dimensions, supersymmetry of Dirac's Hamiltonian, and others. The book addresses graduate students as well as scientists.

This is a very nice introduction to an elegant but rather neglected aspect of quantum mechanics. I like this book very much, and I refer to it quite often. It is very well written. I sincerely hope that the author will consider a new, enlarged edition with more details and an account of more recent aspects of the subject. ...
A good introduction.......2000-06-26
This book provides a good and somewhat detailed introduction to the subject of supersymmetry in quantum mechanics and statistical physics. Unlike the limitations of published papers and/or lectures (which this book is based on), the author has and uses the luxury of space to include very useful detail, normally glossed over. This book is not however, an introduction to supersymmetry in general, but focuses on supersymmetry in quantum and statistical systems. It therefore provides a useful, but far from complete description of the subject. It is therefore well suited for people first entering the field, or as a limited review of the subject.

And with inept officers like Major Greenbrass, Lieutenant Fuzz, and Lieutenant Flap, nothing ever gets done. But that doesn't keep the troops from complaining, or getting into one hilarious mess after another.
Beetle Bailey, the character, may never get a promotion, but Beetle Bailey, the comic strip, has made it to the top.

Wonderful collection for all Beetle Fans.......2001-12-01
I had checked this out from the library at least a dozen times before finally finding a copy of my own. Beetle Bailey, while still pretty good, used to be one of the funniest comic strips of all time. This collection does a wonderful job of showcasing the development of the strip during its first 30 years, along with the evolving characters, characters who just didn't make it, censored gags that you never saw in the newspaper, and other gems. This is truly one of my favorites of all time, and I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes the strip or Mort Walker.
COMIC EVOLUTION.......2001-03-17
This wonderful collection of Beetle Bailey strips takes the reader on a very funny path. The reader is treated to Beetle Bailey, the goof-off college student to Beetle Bailey, REPORTING FOR ACTIVE DUTY, SIR! We also see Sarge transformed from an officer with a medium build to the husky, lovable, short-fused Sarge we love today. We are introduced to a group of funny oddball characters, such as Zero, named for his I.Q, Lt. Fuzz, a lovable toady, General Half-Track, a funny figurehead and Killer Diller, the incurable romantic. Plato, the intellectual brings wisdom and reason into the mix; Rocky, the inveterate rebel a sense of alienation among his fellow enlisted men; Lt. Flap, a sense of decorum. He's one of the few no nonsense officers after Sarge! Cookie, the unappreciated camp cook who looks a lot like Sarge, Sarge's bull dog, Otto, the camp mascot and other very funny characters.
This is such a funny book. Let Private Beetle Bailey teach you the finer points of Sarge baiting, bull dog chasing, work dodging and Cookie crumbling. This book is a treasure for true fans of the strip.
The Best Beetle book ever.......2000-08-19
Published not long after the 30th aniversery of the strip and featuring highlights going back to its early days as a college-oriented rather than military themed strip, "The Best of Beetle Bailey" is a must own for fans. It features autobiographical material of creator Mort Walker as well as the best bits from the strip's 60s and 70s heyday. This is a vital book for understanding the history of the strip.

Excellent if you love Beetle Bailey.......2001-11-22
This is a book that I first checked out from my local library about 13 years ago, and after checking it out at least 9 times, I finally found a copy of my own.
This book is wonderful, and shows just how brilliant Mort Walker really is. I think it is much better than the more recent 50th anniversary hardcover book, because the focus is so much more on the strip. From Beetle's college days, to his progression through the Army, some of these strips are so funny that you will laugh outloud.
Mort keeps his comments short and to the point, preferring to let the strips do the talking. It shows the development of the major characters, those who didn't make it, and even some censored gags, which are great!
If you are a fan of Beetle Bailey, or even just comics in general, this book is a goldmine, and well worth buying.
