GREAT GUIDE.......2007-05-13
I bought this along with 4 other guides and this was easier to follow for
me. Loved the outline set up, simple and to the point and tells you
why an answer is correct.
I made flashcards of each test and just kept at it until I understood
material that I was weak in.
Usethis along with Laura Allen and Duke Cassel/Ashton book and you
will be able to pass the exam.

Book Description
Analyzing the impact of trade on regional development and employment, this volume presents a set of industry case studies in which the international locational choices of industries are linked to metropolitan and regional growth patterns. They attempt to show how the United States has been served by domestic firms whose national and international locational patterns are shifting, the result of strategic planning as well as intervention by government agencies.
Together, these studies pose a considerable challenge to the free trade prescription, suggesting that success in trade is fundamentally shaped by governmental intervention. They also show the adverse effects and adjustment costs that entire regions can suffer, economic and social costs which must be weighed against purported gains from free trade. Each set of authors offers an alternative political and economic course for the United States and other nations to follow, tailored to the specifics of the industry under consideration. Accessibly written, this work is required reading for all those concerned with industrial policy. It is also an ideal text for courses in economic geography, international economics, trade policy, regional development, and business.

Book Description
A practical, hands-on guidebook for the efficient modeling of VCSELs
Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are a unique type of semiconductor laser whose optical output is vertically emitted from the surface as opposed to conventional edge-emitting semiconductor lasers. Complex in design and expensive to produce, VCSELs nevertheless represent an already widely used laser technology that promises to have even more significant applications in the future. Although the research has accelerated, there have been relatively few books written on this important topic.
Analysis and Design of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers seeks to encapsulate this growing body of knowledge into a single, comprehensive reference that will be of equal value for both professionals and academics in the field. The author, a recognized expert in the field of VCSELs, attempts to clarify often conflicting assumptions in order to help readers achieve the simplest and most efficient VCSEL models for any given problem.
Highlights of the text include:
* A clear and comprehensive theoretical treatment of VCSELs
* Detailed derivations for understanding the operational principles of VCSELs
* Mathematical models for the investigation of electrical, optical, and thermal properties of VCSELs
* Case studies on the mathematical modeling of VCSELs and the implementation of simulation programs

Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly good!.......2003-07-01
This book is a compilation of chapters written by many authors. I usually hate that, as it typically means some re-prints of some research papers they have written. Somehow, they've managed to avoid this pitfall to provide, believe it or not, a technical book that I actually _enjoy_ reading (the only other one that comes to mind is "In Search of Clusters").
The book is composed of twelve chapters. The first chapter is a brief introduction to VCSELs. The following two chapters are probably the most math-heavy portions of the text, and go into some detail regarding the physics of VCSELs. Chapters 3 to 8 cover mostly practical design and fabrication issues of various types of VCSELs and the remaining chapters go into some detail about applications.
Be aware that this is an introductory book on VCSELs, _not_ semiconductor lasers. One really needs to have at least a basic understanding of lasers and semiconductor devices before jumping in. However, if you have even a basic (undergrad) understanding of this, the rest is nice reading. The first chapter is a short introduction to VCSELs and covers some major structures such as: etched mesa, proton implanted, dielectric apertured, and buried heterostructures. Also included are topics about long- and short-wavelength lasers, fabrication techniques and applications and VCSEL arrays
There are also discussions on various fabrication and performance issues with VCSEL's, such as polarization instabilities. I don't think it went into enough detail regarding standard performance metrics and methods of characterizing these metrics. I think this is an important issue for both production or research which could've filled an entire chapter.
The last few chapters are basically all about applications of VCSELs and practical problems. If you ever wanted to know how to make a reliable optical connection, the various standards and methods are described. This is more "general interest" stuff and can probably be skipped, but it's a good read anyways. It will definitely be worthwhile reading for engineers who are looking for ideas.
It's a textbook, so I noticed some things aren't up to date, but to be fair, no textbook can be fully up to date, especially one that initially went to print in 1999.
Overall, I think this is a good introductory book (a real one, not some graduate reference text posing as an introduction!), written by various experts in both academia and industry. It's relatively inexpensive, so if you're getting in the field, I'd recommend putting this on your bookshelf.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A687633. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Optical scanners play a prominent role in the commercial and military industries. The scanner's size, cost and reliability are critical characteristics. In this research a microoptical scanning system was fabricated by incorporating a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) onto a surface machined microelectromechanical die. The micro optics for laser beam steering includes a 135 deg mirror, a Fresnel lens, a lateral scanning rotating mirror, and a vertical scanning fan mirror. The VCSEL was attached to the die by solder and electrical connection was provided by wire bonding. Based on far field measurements the scanner had a lateral scan angle of 5.7 degrees and a vertical scan angle of 4.4 degrees. Based on spot diameter measurements at the fan mirror the scanner had a divergence angle of 0.524 degrees. The potential military applications of these scanners include laser radars, laser detectors, holographic storage devices, and data links between integrated circuit chips.

Useful overview of topics.......2000-01-16
I found the book to be very useful as an introduction to the critical issues surrounding VCSELs. Although somewhat dated in terms of leading research, it is nevertheless worthwhile, and the field is not moving that fast...
Vertcal Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers.......1997-06-19
Whilst the author describes the work in this book as timely it appears that it is substantially behind the state of the art even at the time of going into press.. I recommend reading T.P. Lee's book - being more technically informative, accurate and of greater value to the researcher than the average undergraduate student

Book Description
After morphing into 187 very large white rats in the name of self-preservation, Jules Duchon is back to his portly self, a member of that secret class of New Orleans citizens known as the undead. Though he would like nothing better than to spend his nights raising hell and biting flesh in his beloved French Quarter, duty calls when an exclusive club of blue blood vampires demands that the 450-pound cabbie find out who is attacking its young and beautiful members. Adding insult to injury, he has to enlist the help of a former foe: a black vampire named Preston.
What’s a vampire to do? Without the love of a woman to ease his pain, Jules isn’t convinced that his undead life is worth living. He doesn’t desire Doodlebug (she may be a woman now but Jules knew her back when she was just a boy) any more than he longs for Daphne, a rat catcher who nourishes a crush the size of Jules. No, only Maureen will do. Once a beautiful stripper with nothing but curve after curve to her bodacious body, now she is mere dust in a jar. But Jules will move heaven and earth to get her back . . . even if it means pulling her back from the dead.

Better with practice.......2006-03-09
The first book about the "Fat White Vampire" was initially difficult to get through. The protagonist wasn't easy to like, and I had trouble connecting with the book until the last third of it, at which point it picked up considerably and made it worthwhile - good thing, too, since I'd already purchased "Bride of the Fat White Vampire". This one was considerably better - the plot was much more engaging and had better development.
It's kind of difficult to get used to the idea that vampires CAN get fat, and most of them are presented as having it a lot more together than this guy - but as the story goes on, it's easier to find more to like. I'd recommend it, with the note that I had to force myself to get through the first one.
Good book..........2005-05-10
Jules Duchon is not feeling quite together yet, literally. For the last eight months he has existed as a pack of 187 large white rats, though he has now been induced to morph back into his portly immortal self, by his longtime friend and gifted shape shifting transvestite, Doodlebug Richelieu. He would have been quite content to go on in his divided state, dumpster diving, and scurrying around the alleyways behind some of New Orleans finer eateries, but Doodlebug has -and not without some difficulty- found him and brought him back. Now he must face the grief that he was so desperately avoiding, the loss of his beloved Maureen, a bodacious stripper and his undead soul mate. She may be dust now, but that doesn't stop Jules from hoping that somehow they can find a way to bring her back.
Now this very unlikely protagonist gets caught up in even more unlikely circumstances. Jules, the 450-pound ex-cabbie, is drafted into service as a private detective (he spurns the traditional label of "private dick" for reasons that become painfully obvious as the story unfolds). Jules has been hired by an ancient order of vampires the "High crewe of Vlad Tepes" whose fledgling members have been meeting with some mysterious and rather gruesome ends. Are these bizarre attacks some kind of Vampire turf war with the other New Orleans based undead? Perhaps the black vampire clan who prowl the French quarter are involved, or even the wealthy shock rocker Courane L'enfant whose trademark "Goth rock" sounds cash in on the vampire chic? Nothing seems to add up as Jules' inquiries lead him on a bizarre and fascinating nocturnal tour of the Big easy.
At first I wasn't sure what to make of this off the wall tale, as an Anne Rice type vampire novel I'm afraid it is but a pale cousin. But I think it is intended more as a satirical homage than a wannabe vampire novel. Andrew Fox turns the romanticized vampire genre on its ear, stirs colourful local history into a mystery story, and then tops it all off with some good old fashioned (who's going to get it next) suspense. The end result is a quirky and irreverent read that, possibly by intention, refuses to be categorized.
On the down side, the author does seem to have a tendency to go off on tangents at times, which I can forgive as long as it doesn't detract from the main storyline. The detour into some of the urban renewal issues of New Orleans for instance, although an interesting topic in its own right, seemed a bit too much in having the main characters attempt to resolve along with everything else. Overall though, I enjoyed the book and am now curious about his first one, "Fat White Vampire Blues", not to mention seeing what his unusual mind comes up with next.
not that good.......2005-01-30
if you buy all the vampire books , hold off on buying these until you are desperate. was an ok book, newer outlook but not that new. author has the skill to write much better i think
Can House of the Fat White Vampire be far behind?.......2004-10-23
Revisiting the locale and characters that made his first novel, FAT WHITE VAMPIRE BLUES so memorable, Andrew Fox conjures an even more intriguing adventure for his corpulent bloodsucker, Jules Duchon. This time out, Jules is bullied by the vampire elders of New Orleans (known as the "High Krewe of Vlad Tepes") into investigating a series of attacks against their clan, serial dismemberings that have left the unfortunate immortals comatose, sans various appendages. To expose this new evil, Jules must team with long time allies (Doodlebug Richelieu, his transsexual protégé), bitter enemies (Preston, a member of his nemesis' Malice X's posse), and new friends (rat expert and transplanted Californian, Daphne Petruko). Complicating matters, Jules continues to seek a way to resurrect Maureen, his murdered vampiric paramour, even as he pursues his unorthodox investigation.
Fox trods familiar territory in BRIDE; indeed, much of what powered the first novel (mainly Fox's sense of place, and his affection for his cast) drives the second. But in BRIDE, readers find themselves in the hands of a more experienced, more confident storyteller, one who writes with considerably more assurance and panache. Striking a delicate balance between horror, humor, and pathos, Fox takes his fat white vampire on a rollicking, frightening adventure, all the while honoring, updating, and poking sly fun at the hoariest of horror movie and mystery novel clichés. Readers will find themselves alternately laughing and shuddering, sympathizing with even the oddest of motivations Fox provides for his quirky cast. He also expertly toys with his audience's expectations. The author has numerous surprises up his sleeve, and, even if they guess early on whodunit, the "why" behind the perpetrator's deeds will still leave readers shaking their heads.
It's fitting that in a summer blessed by a couple of truly excellent movie sequels (Shrek II and Spider-Man II), Fox turns the same trick with this follow-up to FAT WHITE VAMPIRE BLUES. Based on the quality of this sequel, and on Fox's keen awareness of the traditions of the horror genre, can HOUSE OF THE FAT WHITE VAMPIRE and GHOST OF THE FAT WHITE VAMPIRE be far behind? One hopes so.
Savory, tasty, yummy and mighty funny.......2004-10-20
I'm a nobody but I loved this book and Fox's earlier tome. This one's a mighty tasty outre novel about contemporary vampires in New Orleans. And, thank whatever gods may be, there's nothing Anne Rice about them. Delicious and savory but be warned this is a sequel and you absolutely first must read Fox' Fat White Vampire Blues.
