Learning DB2.......2007-09-27

I found this book very helpful in learning DB2. Before reading, I knew the basics of SQL, but little or nothing about DB2. I did have to read another book to prepare for certification, but one thing this book gave me that the certification guide did not was hands on experience with DB2.

A practical quick introduction.......2004-06-23

A very practical and focused book, that can quickly get you up and running with the basics of using dB2. There are two roles described here. One is that of the Database Administrator. You'd be the person to act as sysadmin of a dB2 database. Doing the install and later creating users with various privileges, and in general keeping an eye on things. Corresponds exactly to being sysadmin of a computer.

The second role is that of a dB2 user. Here, a user is really a programmer. She can be expected to design a database, and to then implement it in dB2.

One thing about the book is that it does not really emphasise a separation between the two roles in the overall narrative. Sure, some sections are exclusively for one role. But the overlap in knowledge is extensive. The book correctly requires you to know both roles, to be more effective in either. This is a key difference between dB2 and the general usage of a computer. For the latter, a sysadmin does not need to know the programming languages that a user-programmer has expertise in.

The discussion about SQL itself is pretty rudimentary. You get enough of the basics to be able to use these quickly in dB2, for simple applications. A pragmatic approach to SQL. Which is what the typical SAMS reader probably needs.

DBAs aren't made in 21 days.......2001-10-26

...and certainly not by the tame treatment of DB2 database administration found in this tome. *Not* worth the money or time to read it....competing titles are much better to assist in learning DB administration.

There is no way that this book will make you a good DBA in 21 days. It teaches very basic concepts but not enought to help a true DB2 DBA on the job.

It is a very good book to start learning DB2. However this book doesn't cover the client configuration issues on Unix platforms.

He's On To Something.......2007-02-22

I finished this book today, and am left with the feeling that there well may be something profoundly powerful about what he is saying here. If anything, it may be dismissed because it is so seemingly simple! We humans tend to like to complicate things. So for me now, it's practise, practise... I can almost feel what this is already -- maybe I'm just a little afraid to try it. I was very intrigued by the idea of not just doing prayer at a proscribed time, but all the time, all day, is your prayer. That's a challenge for focus and transformation if ever there was one.
The book is certainly a beautiful thing visually as well, the images for me served to heighten my feeling of connection to humanity's spiritual journey through eons of our history. This leads to my one complaint, which is that Braden's prose did not equal the poetry of the images, so the book felt imbalanced in that sense. In all though, what he is saying is certainly worth contemplating, and trying.

I think the author has managed to "coin a phrase" with "jump start your life". I think everyone at one time or another has had to jump start their automobiles. Well, that analogy really works for me. It's synonomous with being "born again".

I was attracted to this book by the phrase "waking up from the sleep walking mode", as it struck a chord in me. Working 9 to 5, living for weekends and vacations just seems like sleep walking... at least to me. Siva's approach to "waking up" is simple, direct, honest and practical. It has given me a more clarified sense of purpose and meaning. I wish I would have read it 20 years ago! I would recommend it for everyone!
