Simple, Detailed, Illustrative.......2007-10-06
"PHP, MySQL and Apache All in One" is a good way to begin learning those technologies. It is simple enough and has lots of visual examples, code examples, tables, figures, etc to break down bigger concepts into manageable ones. Also, its an easy read. I normally don't rate anything perfectly, but I couldn't think of any reason why I wouldn't give it 5 stars. I must add though that I may be biased since I wasn't a beginner to PHP or MySQL and used this textbook for a grad course.

As a reasonably experienced Windows webmaster, this book was a waste of my money. The first 4 chapters (the installs and configs) were why I bought it (I already have a better php book). The small amount of space dedicated to troubleshooting installs is pretty much worthless. The author refers us to the web every time anything goes wrong. Thanks! 8^)
It IS a reasonable primer for those brand new to coding techniques, but do not assume that you will learn how to install and configure the web server and database, nor anything about their interoperability through this book. My title is more accurate...
Trouble at first then smooth sailing.......2007-09-06
Like some others who left reviews, I'm a complete beginner to coding, php, mysql, and apache. Given that, I found the installation utterly confusing and spent three days unable to get past chapter 4 where the real content is. A tip for others like me, skip the manual installation. The author cautions about using pre-configured instances of the software, but I found WAMP5 to be a life saver. It's pre-configured and comes in an MSI file. However, as much as I hate to admit it, the struggles I faced in trying to follow the instructions did teach me a lot about the basic configuration, even if that wasn't the author's intent. Since then, I've found the content to be good and am gaining a fundamental understanding of the tools. I know this won't be the end-all php, apache, mysql bible, but it's a good place to start.
An advanced book & not for beginners.......2007-08-25
I am stuck on chapters three and four and can not continue with this book. I could not get Apache to work with PHP. In the "Troubleshooting" section of the book on page 58 the solution to getting Apache to work is this: To solve this problem, you need to stop the running server or change the Apache configuration to listen on a different port. Well, if you know how to do this, buy the book. If you don't, you are forever suck and can't continue with the rest of the book. I tried to change the ports and address as suggested in the book, but it didn't work. Be sure to read "Who Should Read This Book" in the introduction section of the book. I probably don't have the required experience to work the material in this book.
Decent if you're patient.......2007-08-21
This is good for those who have incredible amounts of patience and like solving problems. The setup alone took at least three hours and a lot of searching on Google. Many important steps are left out (such as how to add and use a database from the MySQL command line, how to configure PHP to support mysqli, and how to configure Apache properly to support PHP.) The PHP functions used in this book are the mysqli_* family and require special setup in the php.ini file. There are no instructions however to set this up. Without this you can't write any SQL programs.
There are also numerous typos in the code. It's obvious that none of the code in this book is actually tested to see if it works. There are simple things such as variable name inconsistencies and function typos that throw off the whole script. When you're new to a progamming language these aren't easy to spot.
Overall, however, there is still plenty you can take from this book. If you have the patience the problem solving will probably cement the concepts more solidly in your brain because you will be figuring them out for yourself.

I find this to be a low level of professionalism from this author: "First, I don't mind negative reviews; this is my 4th book".
To post a positive review to off set the candid reviews from others, I find that to be very amateurish.
I have written the author in the past as she suggests only getting some nasty response back from her.
If you want a great book on MySQL go with the MySQL Tutorial By Laura Thomson, Luke Welling.
The book is written very well and has a 4.5 star rating with no pump from the authors.
Great for Beginners!.......2005-04-07
This book includes a wealth of information for the beginner using mySQL. I sped through the chapters, have the database from the examples installed and I'm using for a contact management system. It's great. Now to branch out and create my own database for my book collection. Thanks Julie for a book that readies the beginner for using mySQL.

I got this book long time ago and never had a chance to read it. I recently got some time and want to learn how to use it, and I still have no idea how mysql work after reading for a few chapters. I end up reading the manual of mysql and found some other helpful tutorials online. If you are a beginner, this book does not provide any help.

I had to learn SQL quickly, given ~ 1 weeks time.
The book makes many references to using MySQL (cause its free), yet 1/2 of the examples and exercises do not work on MySQL, due to syntax issues between MySQL and the other, "favored" DB's used in the examples.
Also, it makes the assumption that you've installed MySQL and have it up-and-running, and yet I lost ~10hours fighting with logon credebtials once my MySQL was loaded on my Lunux box...what a hassle!
I guess if you use Oracle or SQL 2000...you'd have an easier time of it.....

Ever look at an old family photo album? You would like to remember the "good old days" but your trip back into nostolgia is a bumpy one because no one took the time to identify the people or to explain the events or to arrange them by topic?
The authors have completed the task that we would all like to do. The book is a true labor of love that is also helpful for the historian and anyone that wants to take a trip back in time or down memory lane.
The rise and fall of an ethnic neighborhood in the Financial District is carefully and enthusiastically chronicled by the photographs that have been chosen and arranged by topic: the neighborhood life, the stores, the culture, the relgion, community services, the education, and its rise and fall between 1900 and 1970. This is a neighborhood that reflected the best of America -- where people were proud of their particular culture and shared it with their friends and neighbors to create the true melting pot that is New York City.
The pictures come alive as each person in it is identified and a brief anecdote is narrated about what is depicted. It is almost as if you have have an opporunity to drop in to have a chat with a dear friend. It is like catching up with someone who you haven't seen for some time as you exchange reminiscences.

near-natural forest management, favouring mixed uneven-aged stands, site-adapted tree species and selective harvesting. Today, CCF systems are encountered in many parts of the world, but forest managers often lack the technical support for generating and evaluating treatment options for complex forest structures.
Specific CCF-related resource assessment, forecasting and sustainable harvest control techniques have been developed, but details about their use are not widely known. The emphasis in the book is on quantitative methods and modelling.

My Summary.......2005-02-27
I have only purchased Vol 1-19, so this does not include whatever is on vol 20... this is just to add my experience to the other review here.
I found that 5 lectures from feynman's 3 volume book (where all these lectures are based on), are missing from the audio 'feynman lectures on physics' collection. This audio collection has everything except:
V1 : ch23, 37, 38
V2: ch28, 29
However, Vol.1 ch23, and ch37 can be found in other feynman audio material, so really only 3 audio lectures are missing from the book all together.
The other review listed 2-11 as missing but its on the Vol 3 audio set (tape 5). 1-11 and 1-17 are both on Volume 9 (tapes 3 and 5 respectively).
Finally, volume 15 tape 3 is announced as 'Chapter 4' but is in fact chapter 9.

This is not a review of the subject itself, it is a status report on all twenty volumes of six cassettes each. Comments of 1-1 is first volume of written lectures first lecture.
Duplicates within audio tapes: 1-2,1-6,1-7,2-1,2-14,2-42,3-2 with 3-21 being triplicated.
Missing lectures: 1-23,2-11,2-28,2-29 which means volume three of the written lectures is completely covered by the tapes.
Volume 20 tape 1-38 is not a duplicate, just mis-labeled on box, correct on tape. This saves tape volume 20 and makes no tape volume a complete reissue of another tape volume.
Publisher is now using clear plastic cassettes so writing on them is impossible without label. Publisher also not putting tape volume number on tape any more.
Tapes such as 1-11 and 1-17 and others are found in the CD issue entitled "Six Not So Easy Pieces" etc. but then who cares, I'm sure the publisher doesn't.
Labeling the issue as "The complete audio collection" is still a stretch. I mean here we are at tape volume 20 with 9 duplicates (thats a tape volume and a half of useless tapes) and still have 4 lectures yet to be released. Somebody is sure making big bucks off of us Feynman fans. Murray should be ashamed of what he is thinking.

Great, fun, well-written book, but I agree, the ending is Atrocious!.......2006-11-24
It is amazing to me that Sabin Willett could write such a good book and then tack on such a dumb, sappy, irritating ending. Why did he do it? Usually, I feel a book is ruined if the ending is bad, but this book worked anyway. I just ignored the silly ending and let the rest of the book stand on its own. Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised since the ending does confirm what I felt was Fritz's, (the main character), biggest flaw. A little implausible that he should be so strong and independent except when it comes to his selfish and highly annoying family, especially his wife, his big weakness. I enjoyed this book enough, though, to try some of his others.
Well Worth The Price.......2006-04-08
This is an excellent book that captures perfectly its place and time. But the ending is atrocious. Doestoyevski was wrong: suffering does not make you a better person. The acts that kill your soul do just that: kill your soul. A better ending would have been a prison sentence commiserate with the guidelines (7 years, 7.5 years); the wife running away with the senior partner or some other wealth alpha-male; and the son becoming the coke addicted, stripper dating lawyer you know he will become.
Of course, the author is right when he suggests we all should be bankruptcy lawyers.

I purchased this book because I thought it would be in the same satirical vein as Tom Wolfe, however it isn't. It is a relevant story about white collar crime,with an interesting twist to it at the end of the book. This twist also happens to be a 'present value'. I enjoyed the book, especially when I got to the end and the story suddenly came together.The middle got a little bogged down trying to explain the nature of this crime, and for one who isn't in the finacial world it can be a bit tedious, and not important to the enjoyment of the story. It is a good read by itself without understanding all the technical details of the stock market. Honestly? I couldn't put it down.Its good food for thought for all of us who struggle with todays present values.
funny and courageous.......2005-05-28
The opening scene in this book is deliciously funny; beware if you've ever lost your temper at your kid or had to wait in a car-queue at school or the day-care center. And there is plenty of wit elsewhere too in this wonderful satire of the blackberry set. Worth taking some time off from your email to read! But Willett is not afraid to be sentimental either, which is why some readers may be disappointed by the ending. I wasn't. This is a funny book, but it has a secret at its center: a heart. In the end it is about making up not breaking up, and I respect it for that. Also, unputdownable.
Decent Wolfe imitation.......2005-04-13
Tom Wolfe can't end a book either, but he makes up for it by giving us complex characters drawn from painstaking research. Willett catches the rhythms of Wolfe's dialogue, but never creates anything meaningful, or even comprehensible, out of it. The first half of the book is riveting [if you can forgive being jolted out of it by his factual and research errors -- if you are going to mock SUV's by engine size, don't create a Yukon with a 2500 CC engine] but the second half of the book falls apart as the characters don't develop. He then relies on unlikely coincidences and far-fetched occurences to move the plot to a hectic conclusion. Could have been a decent book.
