I recommend this text to financial professionals I teach ... VERY helpful to clear the cobwebs several years after college!

5 out of 5 stars Not just for students.......2002-05-28

This is a reprint of "McGraw-Hill Pocket Guide to Business Finance: 201 Decision-Making Tools for Managers" with a single difference. The now out-or-print book came with a runtime version of MathCAD and formulas for using each of the tools, while this new version does not. Also, don't let the title fool you - this book is as useful to working professionals as it is to students.

The 201 tools contained in this small, highly useful book range from Acid Test (doing a quick ratio of financials) to Z-Scores. Each tool is listed alphabetically, its use explained, and instructions on how to use it is provided. What I particularly liked is the worked examples that accompany each tool.

As an IT consultant who specializes in service delivery this book is not one I would normally include in my professional library. I was introduced to it when a colleague and I were writing a white paper on recovery management. We were searching for a way to link business imperatives to justification for investment in recovery strategies. We found one piece of the puzzle in this book - the Altman Z-Score. This tool predicts whether or not a company is likely to enter into bankruptcy within one or two years. This led to the development of a copyrighted model that addressed survival level objectives, and also became a key part of the Tarrani-Zarate Information Technologies Management Model. All this from a single entry in a small book!

Aside from discovering a relatively obscure, but important, tool I also found other useful tools in this book. Because I am not a business consultant or financial expert the tools were like a cram course in financial management for non-financial people. For example, I was able to apply some of the tools to personal financial matters - the real costs of a loan become quickly apparent when you compute them. I was also able to employ some of the tools to conduct realistic cost/benefit analyses, examine trade-offs supporting approaches to projects, etc. In this respect this small book has significantly improved my professional skills and has inspired me to read other books on financial management.

I strongly recommend this book - collection of tools really - to anyone who deals with finance, anyone who has P&L responsibilities, and business and IT consultants. The latter group will find this book to be invaluable for developing proposals, deliverables and project plans that add value.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2002-01-12

This book saved me through four accounting courses three finance courses and two real estate courses. It is well organized and easy to locate any formula that is needed.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Best IMF/Bank Case Study.......2007-08-09

This book was somewhat difficult for me to get through, however, the knowledge taken is priceless. When it comes to the activities of the IMF and World Bank, this is the best case study out there. Even beginners will take a lot from the book, both by the book's brief, explicit explanation of the origin and function of the two multilateral organizations and by the reader's ability to carefully treat this instance as a microcosm for other IMF and Bank activities. Broad uses tons of internal documents and accounts to compile a great sense of the Fund's and Bank's activities in the Philipines, but also to show that this happens everywhere.

Developing nations seeking independence from major world powers in post-WWII had two options: either become communistic or industrialize as fast as possible. For the countries that chose the second option, they had to either nationalize industry (which has often led them to be called communistic, if the nationalizing hurts Western interests) and/or take out loans to cover the industrializing. Broad shows how the functions of the IMF and Bank have changed over time, so that they became the ones dishing out these loans, however, with conditions attached. According to the IMF and Bank these conditions have been attached to increase "competition" so that developing nations can enter into the world market, however, Broad does well pointing out the falacies of the policies used to make the Philipines "competitive," as well as the collateral damage (especially to lower wage workers). The IMF and Bank have a one-size-fit-all solution to every developing nation, regardless of different political economies and in general these solutions seem to support a more western world order.

Also mentioned is the impact this had on the fall of Marcos, and although published in 1988, the reader can contextualize the political change that occurred shortly thereafter (specifically the expulsion of the U.S. from the island in 1992).

4 out of 5 stars Not What You Think.......2002-04-14

This in an interesting book and not one that only focuses on the nightly news sound bite about the S&L in Texas with three speed boats. This author examines why the S&L situation happened. The answers he uncovers do not paint the picture that the politicians want us all to think too much about. Basically the Federal government changes the rules in relation to capital requirements for S&L based on pressure from contributors and a Reagan policy of deregulate everything. Once that happened the mess started. The biggest mistake the government made was deregulating a business that they were on the hook for if they went under. The vast majority of S&L's were actually doing fine until even more regulation came out regarding capital requirements - all in all the politicians had as much to do with the issue as the bankers. The book is much better at explaining this then me, if you are interested in the topic or would like to broaden your understanding of the issues I would start here.

                    Product Description

Business firms have employed strategic alliances with other firms to effectively manage costs, overcome resource and technology constraints, and enhance competitive position. The principle and practice of strategic alliances can be applied as well for productive and beneficial institutional collaborations in rural financial markets to expand the array of financial products and to scale up access of rural households and micro-businesses to financial services. Strategic alliances comprise a new theme in rural finance. The institutions in the study used strategic alliances to tap new capital resources, manage transaction costs, access banking technology and infrastructure and acquire new skills to provide an expanding array of financial services to wider markets. The authors carefully examine the experiences of selected rural finance institutions and their strategic allies or development partners in Guatemala, the Philippines, Ghana and India to draw out the main findings and share the lessons that may be gainfully applied in other country settings. The study addressed a number of key questions: „X What motivated the rural finance institution to structure its alliance or partnership with a bank, commercial or development organization? „X How are gains from and costs of alliances and partnerships shared between collaborating institutions? „X What are the key elements that make partnerships or alliances successful, and which conditions lead to unproductive ones? „X Which financial products and services are best introduced through strategic alliances?

                      Book Description

This study is an empirical analysis of how the fluctuating legal environment in the courts surrounding obscenity litigation over a thirty year period is an appropriate vehicle with which to demonstrate the dynamics of widespread group involvement in the judicial process. Joseph F. Kobylka traces how the development of the obscenity law from the 1957 Roth v. United States decision, which established the proscription of obscenity through its libertarian interpretation by the Warren court and its reaffirmation by the 1973 Miller v. California decision, necessitated changes in both the behaviors and strategies of libertarian and conservative groups in the active pursuit of their particular goals. After a review of the shifts in the Supreme Court's doctrines concerning obscenity, Kobylka identifies the various political interest groups, and examines their motives, goals, and the factors, both internal and external, that determined their responses to Miller. He concludes with a summary of findings confirming that the study's empirical approach yields a comprehensive understanding of the fluidity of group politics. Specific group involvement is documented in the appendices, and bibliographies furnish lists of books, articles, and a table of cases. The Politics of Obscenity will be a useful, authoritative volume for advanced courses in the judicial process and group politics, and will also be invaluable to academic libraries, political scientists, and other scholars.

                            Book Description

The authors explain and describe the mutually rewarding insights that resulted from the interdisciplinary collaboration between an environmental study group working coastal ecosystems and effects of oil spills and applied mathematicians modelling wave motion on sandy beaches. By using the unified Navier-Stokes equations with a Bingham fluid model for spilled oil, multi-phase flow analysis were made. Decomposition of spilled oil by bacteria was simulated as a chemical reaction, and the theoretical and numerical analysis suggested a countermeasure to help reduce stress on coastal ecosystems. The new understanding of how the ecosystems both depend upon, and help to determine, the nature of the shoreline demonstrates promising ways to better assist and exploit the regenerative powers inherent in nature.

                              Book Description

Suitable for both microscopists seeking computer skills and PC enthusiasts interested in light microscopy, this interdisciplinary text explores the capabilities of the computer-assisted light microscope. Written in clear, simple language, the book explains how computer technology expands the usefulness of the light microscope in spectrophotometry, fluorometry, polarimetry, spatial scanning, and related fields. Beginning with the basic features of light microscopy and personal computer interfacing, the text explains how to make photometric measurements and covers spectrophotometry, stepper motors, and server motors. Polarized light and video image analysis complete this introduction to the field. While software examples are provided to illustrate specific techniques, most operations are described as generalized algorithms that can be adapted to any appropriate high-level language, and used with almost any configuration of the microscope. The book suggests new experiments to inspire further study. Promising new areas of interest, such as the use of fluorescence and polarization, are also included. Computers have radically changed the field of light microscopy in recent decades. Computer Operations for Microscope Photometry helps you master the new techniques.

5 out of 5 stars How to visit Vegas if you can't get there in person.......2006-10-18

The five star average for this book review pretty much sums it up. I found this to be a very enjoyable read and highly entertaining. You'll like this book for any of the following reasons:

1)If you enjoy gambling --particularly if you enjoy craps, but even if you know nothing about the game, it won't detract from your enjoyment.

2)If you've ever had problems with the IRS. They talk about a "kinder, gentle" IRS, but that's certainly not what Jimmy Delaney experiences.

3)If you have ever just "people watched" while you were in Vegas. They certainly come in all shapes, sizes, and attitudes, and some of the descriptions of the minor characters in this book are classic.

Someone notify Hollywood -- with all this book has to offer, they should make a movie out of this gem!!!

5 out of 5 stars Brian Rouff; The Nevada Version of Carl Hiaason .......2006-07-14

I was awake until 4:30 the other morning not because I wanted to be, but because I had to finish reading Dice Angel by Brian Rouff. What a great read. His main character Jimmy Delaney, a Las Vegas saloon owner has a warped sense of humor and drips sarcasm -- my type of guy. Jimmy has a little daughter that he loves more than anything and she is chip off the old block and an ex-wife that drips rattlesnake venom. Jimmy also has a heart as big as the Nevada desert - but he doesn't want anyone to know about it. Through all the battles he goes through in this book, you cheer for him all the way to the last page. It's a must read. Just start early enough in the day so you can still get a good night's sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a cozy afternoon.......2006-04-03

I completely enjoyed this book. I'm not much of a Vegas person- I don't even like to drive through there if I can avoid it- but the characters in this book were so engaging and the story so compeling that I didn't care where it took place. I read the book in one wonderful, fun day. I couldn't put it down. I really cared what happened to Jimmy and was thrilled when cosmic justice was served. Humor, suspence, compassion, grit- it's all here in this terrific first novel. I can't wait to read more by Brian Rouff soon!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Time in Vegas..........2006-02-25

Author Brian Rouff has created an endearing character 100%human, living the Las Vegas life. His name is Jimmy Delaney, a jaded, superficial--and most obnoxious--nightclub owner. (This is before his accountant goes missing and his assets are frozen.) Stick around, and he becomes even more colorful.

Despite stubbing my toe on Jimmy's constant use of profanity, I was immediately drawn into this engaging mystery. The scenes, dialog, and characters flow seamlessly from page to page, treating the reader to an insider's tour through Vegas, as only a local can provide. Over all, I laughed out loud, I cheered (inside), and my ADD never kicked in once.

The ending takes a nice little twist, answering this reader's question: Will Jimmy's whiskey glass remain half-empty, or is it already half-full? In a city that worships a lady named Luck, the wise discover that sometimes their only shot at deliverance depends upon their choice of perspective.

Great job, Mr. Rouff! I can't wait to read your second novel--Money Shot.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Good Time Read!.......2006-01-05

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I knew I was hooked when I felt anxiety because the stack of pages in my right hand was starting to thin, I did not want this book to end. Not too often I get fully engrossed in a story. Do it again Brian!
