There's no mystery about why Internet-centric businesses figure prominently in the popular consciousness these days: they're a great way to make a lot of money. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting an Online Business acknowledges that you can make a killing by taking a Web company public and explains, in layperson's terms, a bit about the process. However, the real service in this book is in the way it brings the reader down to earth by puncturing visions of instant e-wealth and then diligently explaining how to make real (read "bankable," not necessarily "enormous quantities of") money. The income streams you can build are generally tiny by Wall Street standards, but they can be very significant on a personal or family scale. You'll get a realistic view of Web business here, and that's why this book is worth reading. The book suffers a bit when it attempts to explain the mechanics of Web publishing (a huge subject that's covered far better elsewhere), and there's very little discussion of the specific procedures involved in setting up a site to take credit cards. (This is a significant omission.) Coverage of soft matters, however, is good. The reader gets a tour through the thought processes involved in developing a business plan, plus all the details online entrepreneurs have to take care of (including dull things like fulfillment and order processing). Having a good idea and an attractive Web site won't cut it. Rather, a successful business has to know its product, know its customers, and unfailingly provide top-flight customer service. This book shows how to do all three. --David Wall
Topics covered: Selling products and services on the Internet, as the startup process applies to everyday entrepreneurs. Sections deal with defining a business plan, getting money for startup and growth, designing a Web site that draws and retains customers, advertising, marketing, and fulfillment.

The Last to Die: Ronald Turpin, Arthur Lucas, and the End of Capital Punishment in Canada
Robert Hoshowsky Manufacturer: Hounslow Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1550026720 |
Book Description
Although they committed separate crimes, Arthur Lucas and Ronald Turpin met their deaths on the same scaffold at Toronto's Don Jail on December 11, 1962. They were the last two people executed in Canada, but surprisingly little was known about them until now. This is the first book to uncover the lives and deaths of Turpin, a Canadian criminal, and Lucas, a Detroit gangster. The result of more than five years of research, The Last to Die is based on original interviews, hidden documents, trial transcripts, and newspaper accounts.
Featuring crime scene photos and never-before-published documents, this riveting book also reveals the heroic efforts of lawyer Ross MacKay, who defended both men, and Chaplain Cyril Everitt, who remained with them to the end. What actually happened the night of the hangings is shrouded by myth and rumour. This book finally confirms the truth and reveals the gruesome mistake that cost Arthur Lucas not only his life but also his head.

Uncertain Justice: Canadian Women and Capital Punishment, 1754-1953
F. Murray Greenwood , Beverley Boissery , F. Murray Greenwood , and Beverly Boissery Manufacturer: Dundurn Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1550023446 |
Book Description
In 1754 Eleanor Powers was hung for a murder committed during a botched robbery. She was the first woman condemned to die in Canada, but would not be the last. In Uncertain Justice, Beverley Boissery and Murray Greenwood portray a cast of women characters almost as often wronged by the law as they have wronged society. Starting with the Powers trial and continuing to the not-too-distant past, the authors expose the patriarchal values that lie at the core of criminal law, and the class and gender biases that permeate its procedures and applications. The writing style is similar to that of a popular mystery: "Harriet Henry lay dead. Horribly and indubitably. Her body sprawled against the bed, the head twisted at a grotesque angle. Foam engulfed the grinning mouth." Scholarly analysis combines with the narrative to make Uncertain Justice a fascinating and engaging read. There is a wealth of information about the emerging and evolving legal system and profession, the state of forensic science, the roles of juries, and the political turmoil and growing resistance to a purely class-based aristocratic form of government.

Electrons in Strong Electromagnetic Fields: An Advanced Classical and Quantum Treatment
V. R. Khalilov Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 2884490159 |
Book Description
This book presents a quantum-theoretical consideration of some important and interesting processes occuring in the presence of intense electromagnetic fields, both in the quasiclassical and essentially quantum regions of electron motion. The material is based on results obtained by the author and his colleagues, and includes a number of exact expressions and equations for the phenomena he observes. He proposes a new interpretation of the phenomenon of radiation self-polarization of electrons and positrons in storage rings, and predicts a new physical effect, which he calls "resonant transition scattering in the presence of a strong non-stationary electromagnetic field." In addition to this, he describes the effect of a superstrong magnetic field on the chemical equilibrium of neutron, proton and electron gases in the neutron star core.

Casual Rex: A Novel

There are any number of ways to approach Hollywood Boulevard, but for pure shock value, the key is to strike at the heart of the beast, right where the cheese factor is the highest: the intersection of Hollywood and Highland Avenue. That's Limburger, baby, with a side of extra stink. With this kind of snappy commentary, Vincent Rubio may seem like your average hard-boiled, cold-blooded Los Angeles PI. But as Eric Garcia's legions of fans already know from Anonymous Rex, Vincent is anything but average--though he is cold-blooded. Garcia's conceit, so cleverly fashioned that it seems oddly natural, is that dinosaurs never really became extinct and that your next-door neighbor might just be a T. rex in a latex costume. It's a twist that allows Garcia to poke fun at our human quirks ("Ankylosaurs have difficulty expressing emotion visually. Think Al Gore."), but it doesn't detract in the slightest from his well-paced, drolly comic noir.
In Casual Rex, a prequel to the first novel, Vincent, a velociraptor, gets conned into helping out his partner Ernie's ex-wife Louise. Ernie still can't resist Louise's "lilac and warm oatmeal" pheromone signature and crocodile tears (almost literally, since Louise is "one of those unfortunate dinosaurs for whom the lachrymal glands are still overproductive, even after millions of years of evolution worked this kink out of the rest of our systems"). When she comes to the agency with a story of her younger brother Rupert's involvement in a dino cult, the pair quickly find themselves masquerading as cult members, or Progressives. The Progressives are intent on reclaiming their dinosaur ancestry, or as they put it, "becoming 100% Dinosaur Natural."
The smooth talk and the stunning beauty of cult leader Circe, whose velociraptor pores emit a dizzying scent of rosemary, fennel, and thyme (all powerful dino intoxicants), fascinates even skeptical Vincent. But it quickly becomes apparent that something dangerous is simmering beneath the surface of the cult. The only question is whether Vincent and Ernie will figure out what's going on before they become 100% Dinosaur Dead.
Garcia's first novel became something of a cult item in its own right. Fans will be happy to know that Casual Rex delivers the goods again; it's funny enough to render the sophomore jinx extinct. --Kelly Flynn
Book Description
In 1999, Eric Garcia made his mark with one of the most striking mystery debuts of the year, Anonymous Rex, hailed as a dino-mite detective yarn by People, inventive and imaginative by USA Today, and a fresh and antic comic thriller by The Seattle Times. Now, with Casual Rex, the sharpest dinosaur-detective in Los Angeles is back, funnier and grittier than ever, for the next tale in this acclaimed series.Download Description
Private eye Vincent Rubio is back, working with his partner, Ernie. Being dinosaurs is not a problem, as long as their latex disguises fit properly. But some dinosaurs have joined a mysterious back-to-basics movement to help dinosaurs "find" themselves and roam about as they really are. When a member of this cult dies, Vincent and Ernie must investigate.Customer Reviews:
