The PBS star/financial adviser has made plenty of the mistakes she warns against, like getting a 30-year mortgage instead of a cheaper 15-year, using Visa cards as magic carpets to calamity, and losing $20,000 in borrowed bucks to bum investment advice. Then she became a Merrill Lynch broker and an author capable of selling 10,000 books in 12 minutes on QVC.
Orman's point--in this and her No. 1 bestseller The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom--is that you'd better face fiscal facts and avoid fear, denial, and the self-fulfilling low expectations the novelist William Wharton called "the Poverty Mind." America is a nation of check-bouncing, late-fee-incurring, guilty bad planners. How long will it take to pay off that $3,000 Visa bill with minimum payments? Thirty years, you poor, dear fool! What would you gain if you bought stocks instead of your daily latte for 30 years? $165,152! Her book might've been titled The Courage Not to Be a Self-Sabotaging Neurotic.

If you can't stand discussions of the psychological origins of fiscal decisions, or self-help lingo like "money is attracted to people who are strong and powerful, respectful of it, and open to receiving it," you'll want a more nuts-and-bolts adviser. It helped me!.......2007-07-30
I'm a little sorry to see all of the negative reviews this book has gotten, since I found it to be one of the most eye-opening things I've ever read and, by following some of its advice, have gotten my finances into better shape than they have been in years.
Let me clarify some things. This is not a book for the financially advanced, for professionial money managers or financial advisors, or for stock brokers. The intended audience here is the "Average Person" who works at something else every day but wants to better understand how to handle their money. This person probably has credit card debt, spotty savings, and some bad financial habits. I had none of those things when I picked up this book and I still learned tons from reading it.
The principal message here is that being rich begins with your thoughts. They way we think about money determines to a huge degree what we do with it, how we invest it, and how we spend it. I think no one will deny that fundamental truth, but Suze's gift is finding the ways to connect our thoughts with practical advice to change bad habits for the better. Many people could make a few simple changes in their lives and end up with a lot more money, and over time, that could mean real wealth.
It is true that some of the conclusions here will seem obvious to the financially savvy. But I question the idea that this is all "repackaged common knowledge." It isn't. Her messages are of the kind that bear repeating. How many people still buy a $3.50 latte every morning, stick thousands of dollars in a bank savings account at 1% interest, and have credit card debt well beyond what they can afford? If it were so obvious that these are unwise things to do with money, fewer people would do them! Suze shows that it's not enough just to recognize financially unhealthy behavior, you must also understand your personal history with money, the way you have been taught to think about it and value it, and understand how that history influences your financial decisions. Her recognition of the emotional value of money gives her the edge over other financial how-to books, which typically assume that money is a raw numbers game. It's much more than that, and Suze is right on insisting so.
Her most controversial advice is that you, and not a financial planner, must ultimately be responsible for your money, and I think a lot of the one-star ratings below are from frightened financial planners who know that Suze is onto their game. She does not, for the record, say that you should never work with one, but simply acknowledges that the ultimate responsibility for your money is with YOU and not someone you pay to organize your investments. I think she's right, and with all of the online resources available today, there's no reason to be ignorant about how money works in our society. A little more attention from you can mean a lot more peace with your money, and being responsible makes it much easier to make money grow.
One of the best sections of this book comes at the end, when she talks about the importance of giving. I just loved her discussion of how important it is to give and wish everybody would read it! In our greedy world, it's a message that needs to be heard.
I found this book lifechanging and hope others can too.
Repackaged Common Knowledge.......2007-05-17
Suze Orman's Book is well written and thoughtful, that being said, she doesn't provide anything beyond common sense and basic knowledge: Stop accruing debt, live within your means, pay off those high interest credit cards, distinguish between good and bad loans, save money, INVEST YOUR MONEY. All this is the same material you will find in every beginning personal finance book, and online for free. The problem is that after peddling all these little trinkets of knowledge, with an over indulgent helping of self-pity, she doesn't help you make a plan or answer some fundamental questions. Like...HOW? This book does not provide the basic mechanics of how to do what she says, and gives no details on how (in financial basics) she got where she is. How do I redistribute my debt so I can pay it off (what is a good time horizon), how should I save money so I don't get burned out by saving, how do I mentally control my spending, and most importantly how do I invest the darn money? If you tel people to save and invest, you need to give them a hint of a plan (e.g., save 10% of every paycheck, but no more, so you grow to hate saving money) or maybe also just a single chapter on where to invest the money beyond, use your 401(k). Maybe one on why being too risk averse is bad. Ultimately, this book simply provides abstract goals, that require you to go out and get another book to help you get perspective on getting there. So just skip it, and get the next book.
First step to getting rich.......2006-08-29
This book is so important. I swear she should write school courses for children K-12 & beyond because she is so wonderfuly full of knowledge and sound advice. I strongly urge everyone to buy this book if not for yourself then for someone you love. It is so enlightening you will not want to put it down.
Commen Sense Not Courage.......2006-08-03
This book is concisely written and reader-friendly.
The question and answer format in Chapters 8, 9 and 10 are pointed and helpful. There was obviously a lot of thought into choosing which questions to ask, because they're pertinent things we need to know, but most of us don't know.
Orman deserves credit not only for her advice but for her attitude and viewpoints on many financially related cultural aspects of our lives. One quote I liked on page 104 about carsis : "It's not a component of the American dream. It's certainly a component of our collective consumer machismo." Her following formula of investing at +X percent vs. a car payment at -X percent lead to some serious numeric differences. Meaning if you add it up, you may have placed your Opportunity Cost of car ownership (with monthly payments) to be about +$500,000 or a loss of -$500,000 dollars.
Most of the points in this book are for the neophyte. Or those who haven't thought much about incoming and outgoing expenses recently as our routine in life gets busy and complex. Many anecdotes are basically short-story case stories about some of the situations her past clients have been in, how they got there, and what was done to get them out of their predicament. You can read the chapters in any order. It's a good thing. The only thing I would change is the title. Instead of the "Courage to be Rich," I might call it the "Courage to Have a Manageable Debt-ratio." :)
LAW OF ATTRACTING MONEY.......2006-06-01
I have long been a fan of The Suze Orman Show on CNBC so I do not know why it took me so long to read one of her books. Her advice is always right on the mark about finances and this book is perfectly in line with that. She has plenty of great advice on buying a home, explaining mortgages, and how to decide which life insurance policy, annuity, or bonds are best for you. The book will be very useful for anyone who needs easy to understand descriptions of these financial concerns.
Most financial books I have read are mind-numbingly dull, and written by experts who appear to have nothing but money on their minds. Suze's book is written for everyone and it reflects a sincere concern for people and bettering the quality of their lives by helping them understand the world of money. The great warmth of her personality makes you sincerely believe she wants you to have the Courage to be Rich.
The book lives up to its fantastic title. What is most striking about Suze Orman's approach to finances is she talks about the emotional reasons why we end up with credit card debt or are afraid to spend money on a vacation. She looks at the deep psychological beliefs we all have about money, and she teaches how to think in terms of abundance rather than scarcity to allow money its proper place in our lives. Although she does not mention the Law of Attraction (see my review on Lynn Grabhorn's Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting) her principles are largely the same. She is also a women of great heart. She ends the book by telling us what to do with the money once we have had the courage to be rich. She talks about giving to charity and how generosity only increases our financial, and more importantly, our spiritual abundance. I wholeheartedly trust Suze Orman's advice, not simply because she knows about money, but because her sincerity and generosity of character shine forth on every page. Read this book no matter how much money you have. You won't be disappointed.

This book is one of the LSAT materials no longer for sale new. It contains old LSATs (old, as in before December 1995). The value of these tests is limited; if you were to study only three previous LSATs it would be best to take three of the newest LSATs. If you're doing all the old LSATs available then this book is one of the materials you'll need.
It contains PrepTests 2, 4, & 5 which correspond to October 1991, December 1991, and February 1992, respectively. As near as I can tell, you cannot obtain these tests from any other LSAT book (but testing companies may have them available for their students).
If you use these tests, use them early on in your practice. Work towards the newer exams as the date approaches the LSAT. If you're taking all 50+ LSATs available, you'll want at least one day off per week. So figure a maximum of 6 tests per week along with time adequate to review all your wrong answers and questionable responses. Count backward from the test and you'll have your study plan.
VITAL for LSAT preparation.......2001-04-09

I started studying for the LSAT using Princeton Review's "Cracking the LSAT" which only contains two full length tests. One of the benefits of purchasing this book is that you can continue to use the Princeton Review's (or any other test prep)guidelines and pointers while testing your knowledge on these actual exams. I found re-testing myself to be one of the most beneficial aspects of preparing for the LSAT. As they say, practice makes perfect...
ACTUAL EXAMS.......2000-05-24
The very best preparation for the LSAT is to practice on actual tests previously administered. The publications through LSAC, such as this one, provide actual exams and answers.
To anyone studying for the LSAT, I would give the following advice: don't fall prey to the fears about the LSAT. You could spend two thousand bucks or more taking courses and buying prep materials. Instead, buy several different LSAT prep books that are reasonably priced. After practicing with them, buy real LSATs and practice on them under timed conditions.
I read about four different prep books that cost less than $20 each. Then I worked through about eight or ten real, recent LSATs under test conditions. I had been out of school for more than two years and was happy with an LSAT score above the 90th percentile. Should you find yourself struggling with the prep books and real LSATs, perhaps a course or individual instruction is right for you. The LSAT score is critical, and if good enough you can land a scholarship from a top tier school. Don't assume, however, that you must spend $1500 in preparation because "everyone else is doing it" and you are already behind. Law school will be demanding and require much study, so get used to it and put in the time requried to score well on the LSAT.
The triple prep and the three or four most recent LSATs available are your best bet, once you understand how the test is structured and have practiced a few strategies (including DIAGRAMS).
Nothing is better than real LSATs!.......2000-04-24
This is the real deal. Previously administered LSATs. No explanations or guidance is provided, but this book is just tests. Regardless of what source you use for preparing to take the LSAT, practice testing is the key to scoring high. This book offers 3 real LSATs. Other volumes are also available that offer other test versions. Simple, but exactly what you need.

The information in this book really works. My dog is totally healthy and I know many of my friends who are using the recommended methods to either heal their pets or keep them healthy. It's probably the only book out there on preventive medicine for our animal family members.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Liar's Poker of Silicon Valley.......2007-04-18
Po Bronson is Silicon Valley's Michael Lewis. Po Bronson does with this novel what Scott Adams did with comic strips. The characters in the book reminded me of the movie Office Space. Although, the book has a much superior plot. This book caricatures the personality of the Silicon Valley and is written to be made into a movie. It made me burst into laughters and some steep turns in the story made me gape in wonder.
It was a nice and fun read; with a peppy and ruthless sense of humor. It is a casual read for the most part. When the plot thickens, you've got to pay attention to some details to convince yourself that you did not get tricked. Fellow geeks and nerds would enjoy it the most, if not all engineers!

I read this book when I was straight out of the university. And man what an influence it had over me! Over the past two years, I am going through almost the same as I am struggling to start on my own. The deeper I get into the business world, the more I can relate to it. This book is, by all means, a must read for young engineers.
GREAT SILICON VALLEY NOVEL -- FICTION FUN .......2006-08-04
Po Bronson is a major non-fiction writer of our tgime-- he was a feature writer for WIRED and has written for NY Times Magazine, Forbes ASAP and more-- He knows the culture. You may be familiar with his more recent books -- especially on career change. This is a fun book written back in 2000 that holds up well. Especially because it's about a breakthgough technology lab caught up in a power struggle and a filed IPO etc. A little bit Manic, very funny and high tech insider views. Opens with the exit interview transcript for Andy Caspar, sales and marketing and his voluntary departure...NO it's not about BILL GATES in his author's notes Po explains that there is some relevance to the NOT GATES phrase because when electrical power comes into a NOT gate, the charge is canceled. As a writer for WIRED -- he kept hearing stories that represented in effect NOT gates-- entrepreneurs who were impeded, cheated or canceled by the gatekeepers of power-- in other words how they tried to fight red tape and get the big guys on their side and it was a no go. He mentions that his subtext is to bypass Bill Gates operating systems -- to create a new paradigm of technology that ignores operating systems...and it reminds us that as he says the human creative spirit is irrepressible, maybe you can spindle, fold and stamp it out for awhile but it the flame comes back-- sometimes as a simmer, sometimes as a boiling point and sometimes as self-immolation but it's hard to STAMP IT OUT -- the gate opens and closes -- and sometimes you have to wirecut a hole in it or jump over it or create a new design and get rid of the barbed wire old-fashioned look. Much of the time you're working with a team and that's this story 4 oddballs (but aren't we all in some way) who strive to beat the system at any cost-- but it does cost them a LOT.
Fun, Fun, Fun . . . then Fizzle.......2004-06-28
Author and Silicon Valley insider, Po Bronson, writes a very funny novel about four quirky guys with the right stuff who want to create something that matters in the realm of computers. From cutting edge software and hardware development companies to Palo Alto think tanks, the plot follows the creation of a less than $300 computer from a list of low priority projects at the think tank level to the actual modeling of a prototype that gets one rival top dog engineer's undies in a knot. The trials and tribulations that face the group compare to the highs and lows of an EKG with enough back-stabbing, personality manipulation and corporate espionage to keep the reading at a wonderous pace up until the last 20 or so pages. The crafting of the dramatic persona, especially the four progtammer/hardware specialists hinges closely to the usual stereotypical portrayals of techno geeks seen in movies and television shows. However this does not detract from the fun level of the story; indeed one gets the sense that these portrayal closely model reality. What does detract is the rather abrupt ending which winds down what could have been an all out page-turning business adventure with a stop-on-a-dime conclusion that certainly did not satisfy me.
Perhaps having seen the rather burlesque film version of this novel, I naively was expecting more bells and whistles and a more thorough troncing of rival engineer and threat Benoit. It never came, but perhaps that is due to the fact that I know nothing about the world of Silicon Valley where Bronson's could-be spoofs on the computer industry's behind the scenes star would lose their bite. Happily, the novel does not force a romance between Caspar and his housemate as in the movie version; here the attraction is noted and the reader can use his imagination to determine the outcome. Thank you, Po.
All in all, I enjoyed the novel; I just wish it had a longer ending.
Insultingly stupid and extremely cheesy.......2003-12-02
Bad characters, inane and obvious plot and zero writing style make this one of the worst books I've ever had the misfortune to read. If you have any interest in the world of business or silicon valley and the computer industry you should find this book laughable. And to make matters worse Po Bronson takes the kindergarten level theme and story so seriously it makes you doubt his credentials.
I actually thought this might be a fun read as I was going through a similar situation as the lead character but just found this to be insulting me on every single page. I hope Amazon don't take it as a spoiler if I tell you the ending is unbelieveably stupid. In a word: Avoid.
