great budget book.......2007-08-24

very easy to follow budget book..i sat and read it a few times and used the added worksheets to help me..and i do believe i am on my way to getting our family on a budget..a nice and simple one.

Very disappointing.......2006-10-23

This book is 289 pages and could have easily been 50. By page 80 I was bored and not interested in continuing. If you have a college education, or even remember fifth grade arithmetic, the first 40 pages are insulting. From page 40: "To figure out how much your average electric bill is, add up your last twelve monthly payments to the electric company and divide by twelve." No kidding. Page 38 explains that to determine your annual income, you multiply your monthly income by twelve or your biweekly income by 26.

The cover proudly advertises that the book "features 70 worksheets!" This is because there is a seperate page for what you spent on monday, tuesday, wednesday, etc. There are worksheets for monthly expenses, where each month has its own worksheet. I know I did not have the patience to write "cable bill - $x" on twelve different pages.

I found "the pocket idiots guide to living on a budget" to be much more helpful. After reading this tiny book, I have a working budget and feel totally confident that I will achieve my financial goals. I got nothing from the "everything budgeting book."

Good Place to Start.......2006-07-16

We have several of the "Everything" books and, as usual, we were not disappointed in this one. There are plenty of forms to use to help you layout your budget. They think of things we normally would not have. They cover what do you want vs what do you need and explain the difference. They also cover how to figure out what to budget for each person in the household.

We've tried different ones in the past but this one puts it into understandable English. Doing a budget is hard enough without spending all our time figuring out what a book is trying to tell us.

Being an outsider of European Intergration as asian, I can catch layout picture from this book about the EURO system. Even it will bring new future in major regions on focus economy and business. This book is not under academical theories only but also on practical issues. And the writing is not hard to read for non-inglish speaker.

It's a book about EURO which you'll find interesting. It is actually a collection of articles written by various industry specialists. It examines the impact of EURO on many areas like Bond Market, Equity Market & foreign exchange rate etc, it also illustrates the role of ECB.

It's recommended to students who want to have a quick grasp of knowledge in the EMU. It contains many graphs and diagrams which can raise your speed of reading. However, the impact of Euro on Equity market is a little bit too short.

Highly recommended to overseas students in Europe.

The only French I spoke before purchasing these tapes was to say my name is Melodee and I don't speak French. For those of us who know nothing of the language the repetition was great. I know how to ask for things such as food, drink, directions. I'm clever enough to apply the rules and make sentences using different combinations of the words I've learned. These tapes teach the way a child learns, completely through listening. Children are not taught I speak, you speak, he/she/it speaks. They simply listen and repeat. After listening to the tapes I went to other sources to read the actual words and was astonished at the differences in how I would say what I read and the actual pronunciation of the words. Seeing the words after learning how the French pronounce them gives you a clear idea of where the nasal sounds are. I've just purchased the lengthy version of French I and am very excited to get started. I'm only going to be in Paris for 5 days this visit but I want to have a few phrases under my belt. My current favorite is "I would like some wine, please." A French woman I know said she is impressed with my pronunciation and understanding of basic French. J'aime Pimsleur!

As some one who studied french 10 years ago in high school and college and looking to brush up for a week in france, book learning was easy but HEARING, PRONUNCIATIOn and SPEAKING were the hard parts. I broke down and purchase this at a store because my local library had NO audio books that weren't already checked out. The lessons are (8) 30-minute lessons. But the lessons are weird esp if you are using this to "brush up". The first lesson was a few sentences of speech. You then spent the next half hour of that lesson repeating EACH syllable of each word in each SHORT conversation over and over again.. No wonder they can easily package (8) 30 minute lessons. The lessons are strangely presented. It explains in what context you might use a particular phrase. For example, if you wanted to ask someone if they spoke french, you'd want to use the phrase "Est ce vous parlez l'anglais? (Do you speak English?)" Well DUH!!!! The lessons seemed geared to making you memorize key phrases, which is a bit difficult when you can't see the words that you're pronouncing, which then makes it only memorizing sounds you hear. For example the first lesson is only 7 sentences long, about two people going back and forth if they understand french or english. Bits and pieces of each sentences are recylcled over and over again in the the other sentences of this same lesson. 27 minutes devoted to this first lesson. You also need a good EAR to hear the subtleties of the french nasal pronunciation. Now I'm just mad that I tore the darn plastic off and the store won't let me return this garbage. Thank god I used a gift certificate that someone gave me as opposed to my own good money.

I like the Pimsleur system. I have used it with Traveler's Spanish, the Spanish I, and this set for French. I prefer the cassettes to the CDs becasue of they are easier back up so as to retrace areas. The concept of listen/repeat in your car on the way to work without alot of book-study at the lower levels is effective, easy, fun.
The purpose of this particular French set of 4 cassettes is to provide an introduction into the Pimsleur system to see if you like the system and want to move directly up to the larger Level I set.
If you are planning to use this set to get ready for a trip to France, this may not be the correct set for you. If you will only be in Paris two days or less, this might be OK. But if you are going to be there 3 days or longer, or if you want to brush up on your high school French, then pass over this set and go for the Traveler's Edition set, which is specifically designed for those purposes.
It works, its fun, get the right one.
If you are not sure if you have any aptitude for French or if you want to go further, this is a good set to sample. If you know you want to go more deeply into the language, this will not be enough.

Quick, but not enough content.......2004-02-11

Don't think that you are getting 8 different lessons. Each subsequent lesson spends about 70%-80% reviewing the previous lesson. The quality of the lessons are good though, but I wish I knew that the 8 lessons don't teach much French at all. I would save the money and buy the full French 1 Language Program which has 16 CDs (the first 4 are very similar to this one).

How far can we go in our quest for regeneration? We will probably be able to induce the regeneration of some tissues, such as skin or even spinal cord, within a few years. Different, But Enjoyable.......2001-07-07

WBPT, Bayport's local TV station is being sabotaged by a villain calling himself the Masked Marauder and it's up to Frank and Joe to stop him before he puts WBPT off the air permanently. For fans of the series, like myself, that are mostly familiar with the lower volumes, this book is different; the book is shorter than the low volumes and the writing style has changed. The plot reminded me of something I would have seen on an old episode of Scooby-Doo, just written better and more seriously. The book has plenty of action and it's centered around the mystery (instead of something like "At the top of the staircase Frank tripped and went flying down the stairs"). I'd recommend this book to fans of the higher volumes and for fans of the lower volumes who are looking to try some of the higher volumes; this would be a good one with which to start.

Global Airlines' flights have been delayed for varying reasons all of which are mechanical. The company president has decided that a committee is needed to get to the bottom of these problems before the press gets a hold of the continuing issues they are having. Jane is a contracted employee with Global. It is never entirely clear what her job is but she is placed on the committee to help solve this mystery.

The committee starts off looking into the problem and Jane is sent to Sherman where the planes are worked on to see if she can find out anything by interviewing the mechanics. On her way out, Benny - one of the mechanics, asks if he can meet her later after he is off work. He tells her that he knows something that is pertinent to the investigation but can't talk about it at work. Benny doesn't show up. Benny is dead.

Jane goes back to headquarters. The committee is shut down - the problems are going away and it's not needed anymore. Benny's wife, Sylvia, contacts Jane and is going to fly up to meet with her. She wants to discuss something with Jane but won't give her details over the phone. Jane goes to meet her at the airport. Sylvia comes off the plane dead.

No one seems to be concerned. Jane feels there is a cover-up going on and continues to investigate. She knows that it might mean that at the end of her contract she won't be offered a job at Global but she can't seem to let it rest. She feels there is no one she can trust at Global but she doesn`t have enough details to take her suspicions to the president. The police aren't looking into the deaths because they believe Benny's was suicide and Sylvia was a self administered drug overdose. Jane wants to ignore it all but seems to get in deeper and deeper.

Jane is a very insecure; a worrier that for the most part is unhappy with life. She bought a house and regrets it. She won't make it into a home but is unhappy with the décor. She questions herself at every step even as far as eating at a restaurant. After all, the food might make her sick. There are some hints as to why she is like this but they are only hints and not detailed at all. I think it would have been easier to understand where she was coming from if the reader had glimpses into her past that explained some of her idiosyncrasies.

All in all this story had some interesting peripheral information on the business of running an airline. The mystery was good as far as who truly was behind the problems troubling Global but it left me lukewarm at the end.

I liked this novel as well as the first and it was a different approach. Being an older reader I appreciated the insights and decision making processes the women used. Hope to have more from this most entertaining author.

Disappointed.......2004-11-07

I loved Ladies with options and was so excited to see a sequel. However, I found the Ladies with prospects almost boring compared to the last book. I read the other reviews on this book and purchased the book but disagree with the reactions

Plenty of heart.......2004-05-11

Cynthia has given us a dose of heart and a dollop of brains. All the gals in Ladies with Prospects are the sort you'd like to meet for lunch. Witty and warm, with full lives and solid characters. Life doesn't pass them by and they have no special exemptions from the tribulations of daily life. They live, love and laugh - and life is life! And life IS grand when you are aware of your prospects! Cynthia makes me remember all the wonderful people I have known in my own life and reassures me that, like the Ladies, there are more out there yet to meet. I am re-reading Ladies With Options wondering who they'll get from Hollywood's finest to play these wonderful, lovable women. Dreams come true and life unfolds, and life indeed is full of prospects. We love you Cynthia - Thanks for the Ladies we love.

Loved it!.......2004-05-03

As a reader, I had loved author Cynthia Hartwick's first book in this series, LADIES WITH OPTIONS. So it was with great expectations that I started reading LADIES WITH PROSPECTS.

Yet, at the beginning, I didn't care for this work as much as I had the earlier book; bluntly, this story and these characters are not as endearing.

Still, as I continued on, I realized that this plot is much richer and more complicated. While OPTIONS had aspects of a fairytale about money, LADIES WITH PROSPECTS tells a plausible tale.

Well into the novel, I realized what a wealth of information this author possesses. She obviously has an expert's knowledge both of business and of the highest levels of technology, to which she adds a working knowledge of the film industry.

With wonderful imagination, she has woven these elements--and, oh yes, a little romance, too--into LADIES WITH PROSPECTS, using language in an easy and elegant manner.

LADIES WITH PROSPECTS is as complicated as any Dickens saga--a master to whom she pays homage--but a whole lot more plausible. And, in the process of divulging the plot, Hartwick examines the impact of the corporate raiders of ten years ago on a small town in which the sole factory (and largest employer) has been purchased and systematically stripped of its assets.

By its end, LADIES WITH PROSPECTS is as full and compelling a saga as Dickens himself would have written, if he only had been a modern woman.

Cynthia Hartwick is an author to watch.
