This was the best tool for the switch from OS 9 to 10. It was easy to follow and for a mac lover like me.

Great for Novice Users.......2004-05-13

This is a great book for novice users accustomed to Mac OS 9. The design is most impressive, clearly and attractively displaying on the left side: OS 9, and one the right side: OS X Panther. There are countless illustrations and explanations on how you do it in OS 9, and then the equivalent way to do it on OS X.

This book isn't totally perfect as there are some missing important parts, such as:

- cannot create groups like in OS 9, as this is only available through the GUI in OS X server, or through the command line and NetInfo in regular OS X.
- states that extensions doesn't need to be managed, but this is untrue, as there are extensions and preferences that sometimes cause headaches (under the /Users/UserName/Library umbrella of directories). This is controlled through System Preferences, or through command line.
- doesn't mention file type and creator, which is still used in OS X. This causes major problems and headaches infrequently, but often enough. There are ways to handle this using "Open With" in right click or Get Info, and in other extreme cases using Developer command line tools GetFileInfo and SetFile.

Overall this is a good general guide, but it does omit (maybe conveniently) some important essential missing features that do not give OS X such a rosy outlook. Some missing features, like the app switcher menu can be re-introduced through freeware and shareware.

In Conclusion, any user familiar with OS 9, and wants to know how to do the same thing in OS X, this is THE book. I highly recommend it. The design is really nice and intuitive, and the book is easy to read. Some things missing, but maybe we can prod the author to do a PowerUser version.

Marty knows the streets!.......2007-01-09

I served with Marty in Germany and in the desert during Operation Desert Storm so I knew he had the writer in him. I have been a cop for less than a year but I've already seen some of the same people (with different names, of course) that Marty described in his book. In my opinion, the book is well written and it grabs you and draws you in to the streets Marty has worked and gives you a feel for the area you'll never get unless you work that beat. I ripped through this book and wanted more. (Note to Marty: I hope you're working on the sequel!) I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the job and anyone who wants to know more about the underside of Chattanooga. KUDOS!!

A Tale of Three Cities by Marty Penny.......2005-07-26

This book is really an eye opener. I really enjoyed reading Marty's experiences as portrayed in his book here. This book only enhances our appreciation for good cops who continuously put their lives on the line for us by the risks they take and what occurs in the real world. Marty has opened up that reality in his book here and introduces a hidden world of facts known only to a few. Great reading experince.
I also recommend Silently We Defend by Robert Benfer, Lockdown Madness by Jim Daly, and Narc Ops by Greg Ferency. These are also extroidinary books for the reader.

Fun book! (Even for a non-cop!).......2004-11-15

I had the honor of serving with Marty during his brief stint as a Soldier in the US Army. This book was a wonderful read for me as it gave me an insight into both the joy and sorrow Marty has experienced since our small time together. This book really captures the essence of what we as a society really ask of our Hero's in Blue. I invite you to join with Marty as he takes you on a wild ride from his time as a small town rookie to his experience as a Detective and later to his time as a seasoned veteran working the seedier side of Chattanooga. Never having had a desire to be a Cop, Marty's book has really given me a better appreciation of the human beings behind the badge. a continuation of the series..........2006-01-19

mcphee keeps the flow going effortlessly. join celeste, jodi, and ali as they go through several misadventures at P.U. Jodi has the hots for zack, who has trouble expressing his feelings and finally does only to discover jodi kissing another guy. ali gets 6000 dollars from her dad, blows the money, then gets its back. celeste becomes a drug dealer and speeds down the road to being a bad girl. all three girls kiss the same guy with the guitar-shaped tattoo, who changes his name alot...this one is funny, irreverent and if you've never been to college, this is about as close as you'll get to it...the footnotes mcphee drops throughout the book are fun...i will read the third one to complete the series...

Fun Stuff!.......2004-01-03

I really liked this book. A lot. I used to read really depressing heavy material, so it was nice to read this light-hearted book. I'd say it's most appropriate for kids in their late teens, but I think that almost everyone can enjoy this series. I haven't been so into a book like I am with these. Pheobe McPhee does a really good job making it realistic. But I highly reccommend that anyone interested in this book read A-K first.
