I highly reccomend this book to all of my financial planning clients. This book will challenge many of the traditional views/plans of most Americans and I believe will point you to an optimal plan for your life. It is a great read- very interesting. Mitch Anthony is a gifted author and his other books targeted to advisors are great as well.

Enjoying Retirement.......2006-06-27

The New Retire-Mentality by Mitch Anthony was a good read and I did get some helpful hints from it as I think more and more about retirement. Mr. Anthony should interview more people who are retired and are enjoying it. Most people that I know whom have retired are enjoying themselves and have no plans of calling it quits just because they have retired. They are beginning a new chapter it is not the end of the book yet!

I especially recommend this book to those who are about to retire since it provides an excellent self analysis on the type of retirement that would best suit you (and your spouse if you are married). The book covers but goes beyond the typical "where to retire" and the "financial aspects" of retirement and expertly covers subjects of "readiness" for retirement, and "options" on the type of retirement that would be right for you. Mitch Anthony does a wonderful job reminding us that the common expectation of retirement is a very impractical and downright unhealthy.

Our concept of retirement is only about three generations old. When Social Security retirement benefits came into being people died about the same time benefits started. We now live decades longer. Yet most people still feel that they are "entitled" to retire in their sixties.

Only about 1% of all Americans will be able to retire in their sixties and maintain their standard of living. Why are we stressing ourselves out in jobs we hate hoping to save enough money to buy our freedom, i.e. retire? Add to that stress the guilt we feel because we have not saved nearly a fraction of what it will take.

A recent study by AARP showed that most seniors plan to have some sort of gainful employment in their retirement years - out of choice, not financial necessity. It is human nature to be involved and productive throughout our lifetimes.

Great for Gen-X'ers Too.......2001-09-04

I really enjoyed reading this book. It has given me a new perspective on my career. I am glad that this wasn't just another book on how to save millions of dollars. Anthony discusses the importance of finding your calling, so to speak. He wants readers to look at what they enjoy most and do that for most of their lives. Of course, there may be a time when we are unable to work or no longer want to work. Then, it is important to have some money set aside. Otherwise, you can retire from the typical working world at any age and begin the life you've always wanted to live.

Characterizing rhizomicrobial community structure is important to our understanding of the mechanisms of suppressive soils towards soilborne plant diseases. We investigated whether the bacterial community structure, i.e., the number of the constituent bacterial strains and the community-level, sole carbon source utilization pattern of rhizobacteria estimated by BIOLOG EcoPlates, affects bacterial wilt of tomato. To assess their impact on the bacterial wilt, we used 15 artificial soil systems into which 5-20 rhizobacterial isolates from a disease-suppressive soil were inoculated. Although most of the tomato plants wilted by 16 days after pathogen inoculation, significant negative relationships were observed between the number of wilted plants, the number of the bacterial strains and the number of carbon sources that the rhizobacterial community was able to utilize. BIOLOGs showed that several carbon sources were utilized by the pathogen but not by the rhizobacterial community from the fastest-wilting treatments, suggesting that competition between the pathogen and the other rhizobacteria for carbon sources played an important role in suppressing the growth of the pathogen.

A Unique Book.......2003-12-16

This book contains information on the geology, flora, fauna and human population of Seram, based on the findings of 4 expeditions that took place between 1987 and 1991.
Special attention was paid to Manusela National Park, the only national park in Maluku.
Each chapter is written by different authors who are experts on that particular field.
One can only wish that such a comprehesive work existed on other islands of Maluku as well!

Many challenging problems in theoretical physics are related to the solution of nonlinear systems of partial differential equations. For true lemon lovers.......2007-04-10

"Luscious Lemon Desserts" is the must-have cookbook for the true lemon aficionado. Lori Longbotham showcases the clear, piercing flavor of lemon in all of its magnificence, whether you long for the creaminess of rice pudding, the luxuriousness of lemon mousse, or the palate-cleansing clarity of gelatin.

The flavor of lemon can be delivered through several distinct mediums, all of which have different uses and tones: zest, juice, and oil. Most home cooks have used the first two, but the third is an unusual addition. Ms. Longbotham recommends not using lemon extract, comparing the results to furniture polish, and I must agree with her comparison--the warmer, subtler flavor of lemon oil makes a significant difference.

Ms. Longbotham's recipes include standard desserts with a lemon flair, such as pudding, mousse, gelatin, rice pudding, angel food cake, pudding cake, pound cake, lemon meringue pie, lemon tart, three different cheesecakes, souffle, lemon curd, and more. They also, however, include some more unusual takes on dessert. For instance, while I adore pots de creme, I haven't quite been able to get myself to try the version in here that includes coriander seeds, and the same with the creme caramel that includes fennel. Of course you can leave these little additives out easily enough, so I don't think they should put you off of buying the cookbook if they don't sound good to you.

We've made a number of recipes out of this cookbook since we first purchased it. The "ultimate lemon mousse" is still my favorite, and yes, it truly deserves its name! We've made it repeatedly, and it's been a big hit at multiple dinners we've thrown. The lemon rice pudding is mild and not-too-sweet, almost something of a palate-cleanser; it's unexpected and delicious. The lemon curd goes beautifully over biscuits. The only recipe we had any trouble with was "my favorite lemon pudding;" it broke and didn't thicken properly, but I suspect that may well have been due to problems with our old refrigerator rather than the recipe.

For those who find cooking to be a delight and love the flavor of a good lemon, I can't imagine a cookbook library without "Luscious Lemon Desserts!"

Mmmmm! Triple Lemon-Cheesecake..........2007-04-05

I think the Triple Lemon Cheesecake and Lemon curd are worth the price of the book. I'm a fan of cheesecake but only make one at a time, and very occasionally. As often as not, my family requests the Triple Lemon Cheesecake over any other cheesecake I make. And the Lemon Curd (which goes on the cheesecake, among other things), Yowza! Fantastic!

I don't cook or bake much, so I don't tend to try out new recipes often, but have been very happy with what I've tried in this book. It's also lovely to look at and enjoyable and friendly to read. Two thumbs up.

For anyone who likes lemon desserts-which is just about everybody! It's pretty surprising that no one had written a lemon dessert book before Lori Longbotham, but fortunately for any home baker that it's one of her favorite flavors. This book is filled with delicious, easy desserts-try the homey Ultimate Lemon Pound Cake, the Chocolate Ganache Tart with Lots of Lemon (wow!), or the delectable Crisp Lemon Wafers-and then move on to the dozens of other delectable recipes. When summer comes, there are lots of great frozen desserts too. The recipes are clear and easy to follow, and she includes lots of tips. And the color photographs are gorgeous!

Recipes completely unreliable.......2005-06-03

I'm a huge lemon dessert fan so when I saw this book, I didn't hesistate to buy it, even at retail price. Then I hurried home and got to work on the recipes. I do quite a bit of baking and I love to meticulously follow directions, but almost everything I made from this, with the exception of the lemon curd, turned out almost inedible. This book offered the worst recipe for madeleines I have ever had the misfortune to encounter, the cheescake with dense and disgusting, etc. I was very disapointed in this purchase, and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It seemed as though the author had never tested these recipes herself. Completely unreliable.

This book is very useful especialy if you know somone who loves lemon desserts (for me it would be my mother).
There are great glossy photos throughout the book which is nice.

Happy.... Sad... Happy.......2007-07-24

This was a good book. Nothing bad about it... but in the beginning it read slow, but the beginning was also happy. Then it became sad.. and it made me sad... but right at the end it became happy again. I recommend it!

The authors writing was well, and am looking forward to reading her other books.

After 10 years of working in restaurants, Ellie (Lemon) Mannelli has opened a successful and hip New York restaurant. Soon after her restaurant's one year anniversary, Lemon discovers that she is pregnant. Her boyfriend, Eddie, wants to get married and for Lemon to scale back on her workaholic ways. Lemon, who has never seriously contemplated motherhood or marriage, doesn't know what she wants, even as she falls in love with the baby she is carrying.

This is wonderful: fresh and original voice, great characters (Lemon's family, in particular, is wonderful), and is, by turns, funny and sad. Yes, this is published as chick lit, but it is very far from the stereotypical chick lit that is (according to Elizabeth Merrick) all about women with too handbags and boyfriends. I first fell in love with Heather Swain's writing in Lauren Baratz-Logsted's THIS IS CHICK LIT anthology, and I was happy to find her novels are as wonderful as her short stories.

I wouldn't recommend this for anyone is currently pregnant or trying to get pregnant as this eventually becomes a novel about having a miscarriage. The only downside to this novel is that Lemon is a bit unlikable in the first few chapters, but the reader won't able to help but love her by the end. I highly recommend this book. Read it with a box of Kleenex.

I absolutely loved this book. After reading Eliots Banana, I knew that I really liked this authors stile of writing, but this book was over the top. I could not put it down and found myself reading it whenever I got a free second. The story is somewhat sad, but not depressing. Swain is so insightful and peppers the story with such hysterical lines. You won't be sorry if you purchase this one!

Anti-Chick-lit..........2006-11-13

Please don't whimsically cast off 'LUSCIOUS LEMON' into that "dreaded" chick-lit category, because this is certainly not your typical chick-lit. Don't let the cutesy name, cover or Downtown Press imprint fool you, Heather Swain has delivered a fresh, smart, funny and emotional novel that is a great read for everyone, not just chick-lit lovers like myself!

Ellie "Lemon" Manelli is on top of the world. She has a wonderful boyfriend, a great large Italian family who dotes on her and best of all her restaurant, aptly named Lemon is a hit with the Manhattan set. But just as she begins to feel that she is on top of her game and more importantly escaping the trappings of her family, all the balls she has been juggling seem to come falling down around her when she finds out that she is pregnant. Her boyfriend Eddie is thrilled and more than ready to take the next step and become a real family but Lemon is not so ready to give up her old lifestyle (or her East Village apartment) just yet. But when the worst happens Lemon has to figure out how to deal with the guilt, loss and regret that threaten to smother her.

'LUSCIOUS LEMON' tackels a serious subject and does not make light or skirt around it, it hits it head on with all of the raw emotion it deserves. Swain created characters that are multi-dimentional and real who you will equally love and loathe at some point in the book. You will go from hating one character to understanding and maybe even sympathizing with them or from rooting for one to rallying against them and back to rooting for them in one fell swoop. This is true of the book as it is true in real life. And once you are finished with the book take the time to read the exceptionally well written "interview with the author" the combination of the two will have you wanting to run out and read more of Heather Swain, I know I do!

helped me through my own miscarriage..........2006-05-12

I started reading this book while I was pregnant, but before I finished the book I learned that I had miscarried (no the book didn't cause it). Unlike Lemon, I already have one child, but, like her, I was ambivalent about this pregnancy (though for different reasons). However, like Lemon, I was devastated by the loss. This book has helped me tremendously in working through my grief. It is also a wonderful read on its own. I look forward to reading more books by Heather Swain.
