Book Description
Visual Basic's popularity is due to its dual nature: It's relatively easy for aspiring programmers to learn, yet powerful enough for professional application developers.
Visual Basic 6: Visual QuickStart Guide, like VB itself, will appeal to both camps. It's so accessible that novices will be up and programming in no time, while more seasoned programmers will find it a helpful quick reference to important tasks.
Of the many VB books on the market, few address the beginner.
Visual Basic 6: VQS assumes absolutely no programming experience, but instead relies on the time-tested Visual QuickStart teaching method. Screenshots, sample code, and concise, step-by-step instructions guide you through a carefully selected series of examples designed to get you programming right from chapter one. And once you've mastered the basics, you can use the clearly tabbed format to refer to topics you need to brush up on.
Customer Reviews:
All I can say is ..."Grab it"! . This book is that good!.......2003-05-08
I've bought other VB books that are more detailed, but they are often tedious for beginners. This book perfectly balances ease of use with enough explanations for you to understand what you are doing as you learn by hands on example. The best way to learn VB is by doing it hands on. This book has tons of exercises so youre not just learning the fundamentals of VB programming, but you are seeing it all in action, building small mini-programs as you go along. Very easy to use, well explained, great graphics on almost every psge. If you desire to really be a master programmer, of course you will need a more detailed reference book afterward, and lots of hands on practicing to keep your skills sharp. But there are many books out there for that after youre done with this one. By the time you finish this book it will give you a real sense of what it feels like to construct programs in Visual Basic, and you'll be ready to take your learning experience to the next level. If I could give this book 6 stars, I would. Good luck to you all
5 stars because I can not give 6........2002-10-08
A good book for the beginner. I can read in less than 5 days. It covers perfectly most of the basic visual controls: button, dialog, menu, combo list, text box, timer, data control, status bar, MDI, SDI, set up control, environment ... The codes in the examples are short and simple, but they are good enough for your learning. If you have experience with other programming languages in a less friendly environment like unix, then this book is a quick way to catch the main idea of this language by learning the GUI quick.
It mentions no OOP, ADO and has no cdrom, you should look in other books. In fact, this book covers all the main concepts that you will learn in the introduction course of vb at the college, except it will take you 15 weeks and you can do a little more coding. If you have some programming experience and need a quick learn the controls of vb, this is the book for you. You will not regret for
< [money]. Other books will be the next. This book will not make you sick by the size and lengthy words. I wish I can find some similar for visual c++. Thank for any hint!
VB6 - Visual Quickstart Guide - definitely for the novice.......2001-12-24
This book is for the novice / beginner with basic computer skills and no real programming experience. The visual approach to teaching used by the author (particularly the extensive illustrations, graphics, and code examples) provide an easy, structured approach to learning. The book assumes that you have a connection to the Web to download code - no CD is included. If you are just trying to "get your feet wet" and find out about what can be done with Visual Basic, this is the book for you.
For me, the main limitation of this book is that it is intended for the beginner and treats most topics superficially. It is not a particularly good reference text. I was trying to author a simple medical calculator, and ended up purchasing a more extensive book (Visual Basic 6.0 by Halvorson) because the information was not extensive enough in this book. If you 1) want to create a full-fledged program that could be used at work or home, 2) have experience programming macros, or 3) otherwise are beyond the "beginner" category, I would buy something else.
Visual Basic 6: Visual QuickStart Guide.......2001-10-02
I found this book to be extremely helpful as a novice in the world of Visual Basic. Mr Davis's use of graphics took a great deal of the guess work away and demonstrated what the forms and properties should look like.
This is a great book for beginners. His explanations are clear and concise. The source code downloads were excellent and allowed the user to compare their projects and judge your progress. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about Visual Basic.
An excellent way to get started with Visual Basic.......2001-09-28
If you want to sit down and quickly get an understanding of Visual Basic, this is the book.
It favors readers who have limited programming experience, but it is not too simplistic. Readers who are experienced in other languages will find that they can just move through it a bit more quickly.
You start writing Visual Basic code on the first pages, and subsequent exercises build on what you have learned. As you go through the chapters, it provides enough clues to help beginners remember to change the name of new forms they create without boring more experienced programmers with endless step by step repetitions of how to start a new form!
Having ready many "How to..." books on Oracle, Access, Linux, WindowsNT, etc. I had become pretty frustrated about how much the books cost and how little I learned (largely because they were too poorly written to stick with them for even a couple of days). This book is a great value, and you really can learn how to program in Visual Basic from it!

Book Description
This book considers public debt dynamics in various endogenous growth models, namely the AK model and explicit models of innovation and human capital accumulation. Furthermore, the closed economy, the small open economy and a two-country world are analysed. In the closed economy model, the focus is on budget deficit and public debt dynamics and their influence on capital growth and output growth. Then, in the open economy model, the effects on foreign debt growth are considered. In a two-country setting, public debt growth in one country affects growth in the other country. In each scenario the government either fixes the deficit ratio or the tax rate. For both strategies the steady state is derived and stability is analysed. Then, dynamics induced by various shocks and policy measures are explored. Many diagrams illustrate the dynamics.

Book Description
The book integrates population biology theory and practice with management of fragmented ecosystems. This has rarely been successfully performed so far, as theory is usually conspicuous by being unconnected with management. Most management guidelines, therefore, tend to be extremely general and based on biogeography rather than population dynamics. Reviews on the current state of the art in connection with fragmentation research (population biology and genetics) are presented. The focus is put on the most important results of a large German project, which emphasises the application of metapopulation and minimum viable population theory in Central European cultural landscapes. This is supplemented by case studies from Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. The book is aimed at scientists in ecology and nature conservation as well as graduate students and people working in conservation practice.

Book Description
Fully Tuned Radial Basis Function Neural Networks for Flight Control presents the use of the Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural networks for adaptive control of nonlinear systems with emphasis on flight control applications. A Lyapunov synthesis approach is used to derive the tuning rules for the RBF controller parameters in order to guarantee the stability of the closed loop system. Unlike previous methods that tune only the weights of the RBF network, this book presents the derivation of the tuning law for tuning the centers, widths, and weights of the RBF network, and compares the results with existing algorithms. It also includes a detailed review of system identification, including indirect and direct adaptive control of nonlinear systems using neural networks.
Fully Tuned Radial Basis Function Neural Networks for Flight Control is an excellent resource for professionals using neural adaptive controllers for flight control applications.
Book Description
Marvelously funny, bittersweet, and beautifully evocative, the original publication of A Short History of a Small Place announced the arrival of one of our great Southern voices. Although T. R. Pearson's Neely, North Carolina, doesn't appear on any map of the state, it has already earned a secure place on the literary landscape of the South. In this introduction to Neely, the young narrator, Louis Benfield, recounts the tragic last days of Miss Myra Angelique Pettigrew, a local spinster and former town belle who, after years of total seclusion, returns flamboyantly to public view-with her pet monkey, Mr. Britches. Here is a teeming human comedy inhabited by some of the most eccentric and endearing characters ever encountered in literature.
Customer Reviews:
Big laughs for a small place.......2005-05-31
The brilliance of this novel is the narrative voice-- a child observer who remains wholly unbiased, deadpan, as he relates the raucously funny antics of a gaggle of strongly opinionated townspeople. These are Dickensian-quality characters you appreciate even if you have never lived in the South. A laugh-out-loud funny read.
delightful humor and honesty ...............2003-01-26
This is a beautiful Southern novel that moves at it's own pace to paint a picture of a small town populated by unique individuals. It is told through the eyes and ears of a young boy, Louis Benfield. There is no pretense to the tale Louis passes on to the reader, merely a child relaying what he has heard being said between adults or to him by an adult. The naivete and the simple artless manner that Louis passes on the information he has heard in conversations is the key to this delightful tale. The stories all center at some point on Miss Myra Angelique, who was the beloved sister of the former Mayor.
The stories each take on a life of their own, but eventually find their way back to Miss Myra Angelique. This book is full of wonderful Southern sayings and "wisdom" that will leave you laughing at their simplicity and homespun quality. There is however an underlying complexity to this wisdom that weaves it's way into the Southern tale. T.R. Pearson leaves no stone unturned, even delving into the realities of prejudice and intolerance, not with any judgement involved, but as a part of the history of the town of Neely observed and interpretted through Louis's young eyes, heart and soul. T.R. Pearson can truly join the ranks of the true, great Southern writers. He portrays the Southern culture with delightful humor and honesty that evokes thoughtfulness and deliberation on the true meaning of the tale that has been carefully crafted with a casual feel.
A Winding Path.......2002-12-03
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.
(The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R.Tolkien)
Just as a path can slowly wind itself around a mountain, stories do not always take the quickest route from page one to the back cover. Sometimes they slide away from the main narrative and drag the reader into unmapped territory without any sign of when they might break back onto the plotted course. But books hope to be more like adventures-more interesting and meaningful then the final destination. T.R. Pearson's, "A Short History of a Small Place," demands its readers leave their navigation equipment at home and just follow the story's path as it serpentines its way through 80 years in the history of a quaint-make-believe-town in North Carolina named Neely. While Pearson's account is comedic in tone, his story should not be taken lightly.
Neely's people, places, and happenings are fanned out before the reader by one of the town's younger residents, Louis Benfield. The nucleus of his tale recounts the death of Miss Myra Angelique Pettigrew, the towns most prominent and richest citizen. Swirling around this event, Louis delves into the lives of other Neely residents and the towns many noteworthy occurrences. While the actual voice in the text is Louis', the bulk of "A Short History of a Small Place" is told through the words of the townspeople, particularly Louis' father and mother. It is his parent's voices that shape the novel and allow us to witness events that transpired years before Louis and his parents were born.
The book's title does a perfect job in summing up the story's primary strength and overall weakness. A short history does in fact wrap itself around the tale of Miss Pettigrew's death. While the entire narrative is related through the various events it describes, we spend little time in what is essentially the "present." By taking place mostly in the past, a deeper understanding of all the characters is gained, which in turn fleshes out the circumstances surrounding Pettigrew's suicide. Had the book taken a more linear path, Pettigrew's death would have seemed exceptionally silly and played out for comedy's sake. That is not saying "A Short History of a Small Place" should be taken completely seriously. Pearson is obviously spinning a comedic tale riddled with tragic elements, while poking fun at many aspects of Southern life. Still, this is a true piece of literature. It is only because we are fully aware of the history of Neely that we can take all its eccentricities with a grain of salt.
Unfortunately, the story does get lost along the way. Pearson does an amazing job of populating his fictional town, but it feels as if he gets tangled up in his own imagination. Many of the sub-stories have a tendency of branching off into even shorter pieces. Coherent plot lines are separated by large chunks of text, making it difficult to remember what you were originally reading about. Even when the reader doesn't lose sight of the whole narrative, following the separate stories and piecing everything together can become somewhat tedious. Also, the cast of characters is large and remembering who they all are and their family ties can get confusing.
Pearson's novel is a entertaining read that should keep most peoples attentions even though the myriad of stories contained in the book can become confusing. Readers should expect to spend some time with the book if they want to get a through understating of what is going on.
A Short Review for a Long Book.......2002-12-03
T.R. Pearson's novel, a Short History of a Small Place, takes the reader by the hand down a winding path through the history of a family and life in a small town. The narrator, Louis Benfield, is a child retelling the stories told to him by his father. The story is told through the eyes of a child but from the perspective of an entire town.
The story rambles along but the reader is never lost. Louis will start a particular story and then sidetrack to another story but he always returns to the first. Also, there is always a reason for him to divert off track. Background information is usually given in the ramblings that add to the original story. If Louis were not to go off on tangents at some points, the story itself would suffer.
These stories are the history of the town but they are never told by the people they happen to. Louis is telling the stories his father told him. However, Louis' father didn't even experience every story he tells his son. The stories are colored with the opinions and observations of an entire town. This gives the reader a little insight into what small town life is like.
However, the more the reader learns about life in a small town, the more obvious it becomes to the reader that everyone at some point in their life has experienced what living in a small town is like. Even if you've never lived in a small town, any high school can be compared to small town life. In the novel, whenever something highly dramatic happens, a mob is conveniently around to witness every aspect of everyone's life. And those who had the unfortunate luck to have missed the event hear about it so often that they have trouble remembering whether they were really there or not. High school life can be the same way at times. If something happens to you on Monday night it is amazing how many people know exactly what happened by Tuesday morning.
What is so great about this book is its use of humor. Never during the highly dramatic points does the reader ever feel like the situation is serious. This goes back to the perspective the novel is told in. Because the novel is told from the perspective of the town, serous situations can be transformed so the reader can see the humor in it. Also, the reader is shown the humor in everyday life as well.
Reading T.R. Pearson's novel, A Short History of a Small Place, is an experience that cannot be missed.
A Short Review for a Long Book.......2002-12-03
T.R. Pearson's novel, A Short History of a Small Place, takes you by the hand and leads you down winding path through life in a small town. The story is told through the eyes of a child but it is really his father's perspective. Whenever an opinion is given, it is always preceded by "Daddy says..." This is understandable considering that the child is usually discussing events that occurred years before he was alive.
Using his father's stories, the narrator gives us a history of the people in his town and the town itself. Louis Benfield, the narrator, tells the tales in a rambling manner but there is always a sense of cohesion to the different threads of the story. Never does the reader feel lost in the book. Louis will start a story, go off for what could be a chapter or more on something related to the story, and then go back to the original story. Everything is connected and every story is told for a reason.
Louis' history of his family and town give the reader insight into his life but the reader can also identify with Louis as well. Everyone has experienced the small town environment at one time or another. Even if you never lived in a small town, anyone's high school experience could probably be compared to small town life. In the book, whenever something dramatic was happening there always seemed to be a mob handy. And those unlucky enough to have missed the great occurrence usually have it talked about so much to them they forget whether or not they were truly there. High school life is the same exact way. It some mysterious way, if something happened to you Monday night, everyone in school knows by Tuesday morning. Thus, identifying with a Louis and the other characters in the book is quite simple.
However, the best thing about this book is the humor involved. Every turn of the page delivers a new crazy situation for the reader to laugh at. The author has the great ability to make even serious issues comical. He is able to do this by telling it from the perspective of the town. The narrator, Louis, retells the stories his father has told him. These stories are a combination of personal experiences and stories told by other people to Louis' father. Therefore, some of seriousness is taken out of situations.
Reading T.R. Pearson's novel, A Short History of a Small Place, is an experience that cannot be missed.
