Book Description
An ever greater number of our contemporaries will reach a very much greater age than their ancestors. Longevity is one of the most fertile fields for paradoxes: it is clear that the same causes do not produce the same effects at the age of ten and at the age of one hundred! On the subject of longevity, the "recipe book" is far from having been written. Nevertheless, the Fondation IPSEN has chosen a few of these paradoxes to discuss and try and explain them.

Book Description
Memoir 20 is the most comprehensive reference work on the UK's oil and gas fields available. It updates and substantially extends Memoir 14 (1991), United Kingdom Oil and Gas Fields, one of the Geological Society's best-selling books. This new edition contains updates on many of the aging giant fields, as well as entries for fields either undiscovered or undeveloped when Memoir 14 was published.
The book is divided into nine parts covering the major petroleum provinces both offshore and onshore United Kingdom, from the Gas Basin in the southern North Sea to the Viking Graben in the northern North Sea, from the Atlantic Frontier to the Irish Sea and from the Wessex Basin to the East Midlands. Each part contains a reference map showing field locations. The introductory chapters reveal the stories behind the major plays and discoveries therein, and their tectonic and stratigraphic framework. There are two appendices: tabulated field data and a comprehensive list for all of the UK's 300+ oil and gas fields.

The eponymous heroine of Miss Wyoming is one Susan Colgate, a teen beauty queen and low-rent soap actress. Dragooned into show business by her demonically pushy, hillbilly mother, Susan has hit rock bottom by the time Douglas Coupland's seventh book begins. But when she finds herself the sole survivor of an airplane crash, this "low-grade onboard celebrity" takes the opportunity to start all over again:
She felt like a ghost. She tried to find her bodily remains there in the wreckage and was unable to do so.... Then she was lost in a crowd of local onlookers and trucks, parping sirens and ambulances. She picked her way out of the melee and found a newly paved suburban road that she followed away from the wreck into the folds of a housing development. She had survived, and now she needed sanctuary and silence.
She's not, of course, the only Hollywood burnout who'd like to vanish into thin air. Her opposite number, a producer of big-budget, no-brainer action flicks named John Johnson, stages a similar disappearing act. After a near-death experience, in the course of which he is treated to a vision of Susan's face, he roams the western badlands. And even after his return to L.A., Johnson is determined to unravel the mystery of this woman's fate.
Throughout, Coupland displays his usual gift for capturing the absurdities of modern existence. The distinctive minutiae of our age--junk mail and fast food, sitcoms and Singapore slings, and the "shop fronts bigger and brighter and more powerful than they needed to be"--come to vivid, funny life in this author's hands. And while Susan and John occupy center stage, Coupland is just as generous with his peripheral characters. A scriptwriter and his supernaturally intelligent girlfriend, a recluse who spends his evening generating Internet rumours--all manage to be blessed and cursed, numbed by their pointless existences but full of humanity when put to the test. Picture Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut collaborating on a Tinseltown version of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and you come halfway to grasping Coupland's brand of thoughtful, supremely funny storytelling. --Matthew Baylis
Book Description
From the bestselling author of
Generation X and
Microserfs, a smart, funny, fast-paced mystery with a heartfelt American romance at its core.
Susan is a former child-beauty-pageant contender. John is a hard-living movie producer. She walks away from a plane crash without so much as a scratch. He comes away from a near-death experience with a unique, vivid plan.
Susan refuses to spend one more day peddling herself for cheesy TV sitcom parts and takes advantage of a very weird situation to disappear. John turns his back on a hedonistic life making blockbuster action flicks. Shedding their self-made identities, each sets out on an uncharted course across the Gap-clogged, strip-mall landscape of California, searching for the thing--Love--that neither has ever really known, but that they now think they just might, actually, desperately want.
Assisting Susan and John are a blackmailing pageant mom, a pair of suburban eggheads, a rust-belt refugee, and a salad bar of other twentieth-century Americans who all share the dream of one day taking center stage. In
Miss Wyoming, Douglas Coupland has combined the literary and the popular in a sparkling and witty caper that quietly resonates into the eternal.

Customer Reviews:
Douglas Coupland's worst book! Do not judge him by this book! .......2007-01-15
Whatever Miss Wyoming is--a publishing-quota filler, a bout of writer's block, evidence of exhaustion (the man is prolific)--the writing is not representative of the writer.
Why's it stink? Well, mostly because it's just lazy, and ill-conceived. Coupland spends these 311 pages taking aim at the easiest target, Hollywood phonies, filling Miss Wyoming with insufferably obnoxious characters and their tirades of referential dialogue. Normally in his books, this character/type is the exception, a trivial anomaly who's mostly there to mock. Here, though, they're the rule, and there's not one tolerable character because of it. Even the two "heroes" are tossed off, lame approximations of outsider underdogs. The writing is weak too, bereft of Coupland's usual incisive wit and shrewd perception, instead given to sassiness and stupid similes. The book at times even verges on self-parody (Chapter Four), where the prose is so stereotypically rote it could have been spat out from a machine, or a beginning college creative writer.
Anyway, Douglas Coupland is a great author. Almost all of his other work is gold-plated gold. This is his dud. All authors have them; so be it. Read literally any other of his works.
Totally Trashy!.......2006-03-06
If you are addicted to reading the tabloids then you'll love this book. If you're looking for depth, and intellectual stimulation stay away!
I don't know what to think.......2005-10-27
I hated it, then I was indifferent, then I briefly liked it, now I'm indifferent. I think I agree with the other posters who said the characters were not well developed. It's one of those works where you shouldn't think too much; otherwise you'll spoil it for yourself and the author. At the end of the day, if a novel brings me to Amazon to read other reviews, it must deserve at least 3 stars.
Entertaining and witty, but too thin on plot.......2005-08-05
Coupland creates some highly developed characters in Miss Wyoming; Susan, a former child/teen pageant queen turned minor TV celebrity who is currently all washed up, John, a former Hollywood player turned drug addicted hack, and Ryan and Vanessa, two unbelievably smart twentysomethings with too much time on their hands. Coupland provides in-depth backstories for his characters and makes them sympathetic to the reader, and his observations about L.A. and modern pop culture are often sharp and funny, but the book somehow falls short in the plot. Normally, books that don't have a chronological arc are written to enhance the plot, but Miss Wyoming feels a bit jerky in this regard. Coupland spends so much time describing things that happened to the characters years and years ago that don't seem to move things forward. Three quarters of the way into the book, I wondered where Coupland was going with it; once I was finished, it seemed incomplete. If you're a fan of Coupland's writing style, you'll probably still enjoy this quick read. If not, the plot is nothing to write home about.
not his best work.......2005-07-30
I am a fan of Coupland (Microserfs, especially, and also Hey, Nostradamus). Miss Wyoming seems hurriedly put together. The characters' motivations for their romantic and sexual liaisons are not believable. Which would be okay except that these are central to the book's plot.
Product Description
A STORY THAT GRIPPED THE NATION -- THE MURDER OF LIL MISS In the secluded darkness of an early spring night, Lisa Marie Kimmell and her sporty black Honda vanished from a Wyoming desert highway. Frantic, Lisas family and friends mounted a tireless search for the missing 18-year old across three states. The answer to Lisas disappearance was found a week later in the icy waters of the North Platte River. The first search was one of love and futility. After Lisa was found murdered, a second search was launched. A search for justice. Ron and Sheila Kimmell were determined to find their daughter's murderer despite the many jurisdictional and bureaucratic obstacles they encountered. It would take years before the mystery unraveled and the Kimmell's discovered truths more horrifying than anyone could imagine. Numerous similar homicides remain unsolved in the western states. Are they connected in some way? Can Ron Sheila's relentless pursuit for justice help find answers for other families?
Customer Reviews:
A true story of love and determination.......2006-08-08
This is a truly amazing story of a family whose lives were ripped apart when their 18-year-old daughter was killed, and their search for justice.
From the moment "Lil Miss" Lisa Marie Kimmell disappears from their lives, through the endless search for her killer, until the time her murderer is sentenced 16 long years later, the author allows an inside look of what their lives were like. It is an incredibly moving story that touched my heart and left me in tears many times.
Above all, the Kimmells send the message that "life goes on" and we each have to make the best of it. The entire Kimmell family, and particularly mom Sheila, displayed true courage throughout their ordeal. This book is heartwrenching as well as heartwarming, and reading it will leave you a changed person.
Keeps your interest all the way to the end........2006-02-28
I do not know the Kimmells and until I read the book was not familiar with the murder. I read the book in two days. As I was reading the book it seemed like Sheila Kimmell was sitting next to me telling the story. I have been in law enforcement for over 20 years and have investigated many cases to include homicides.
Many of the situations confronting the investigators in this case are often experienced by investigators in other murder cases that are random in nature. Fortunately most murders are acquaintance murders or we would all be in constant fear. Unfortunately there are far to many that are not acquaintance.
Lisa Marie's murder is frightening in that it was such a random crossing of paths with her killer. There are however more of these than people realize. I think this book does an excellent job of exploring how these paths may cross and will hopefully save lives if not open doors to finding the answer to more murders.
I would suggest everyone read this book. I wouldn't encourage panic but it will help to make us a little more cautious.
Excellent book.......2005-08-11
Lisa and I were about the same age when she disappeared. I wasn't afraid to travel alone until her murder. In fact, I was planning a trip to visit friends that would have taken me through the same area she disappeared from. After her disappearance and death, I cancelled the trip and didn't travel alone for a few years. I never forgot her story and created a page for her on a memorial website last fall. Through that, her mother contacted me. We spoke on the phone, but didn't meet until last month at a book signing.
I read the book within a day. It is very well written. Although I had a respect for the Kimmell family before I read it, having come to know more about them through this story, I really admire them for their courage in fighting for justice and for sharing their story.
I have worked in law enforcement for 9 years and haven't seen much "jurisdictional" problems. I think that is partially a result of the Kimmells' efforts due to their experience.
Now that I know more about the evil being who took Lisa's life , I honestly believe that Lisa's story might have saved my own life. Had her story not gained the publicity it did, I'd have been travelling alone a couple of months later in that same area where Eaton lived and hunted for victims. Lisa and I were the same age. I may have been one of his victims too had I not been frightened by her story.
Amazing.......2005-07-18
In 1988 when Lisa Kimmell disappeared I was 9 years old. I still remember the news coverage and donating money to her reward fund at Arby's. Finally, after years her murderer was found. When Mrs Kimmell announced that her book was finished I couldn't wait to read it. I recieved it and read the whole thing in one day. She has done an excellent job of conveying her feelings and outlining her and her families struggle for the 16 years it took to find the man who took her precious daughters life. She was able to expel many of the rumors that had be circulating and she showed the precerverance of the numerous law enforcement officers and others that helped her to get the justice she deserved. This is a book that anyone who has ever seen or heard anything about the disappearance of "Lil Miss" should read!!

Book Description
Camping Wyoming is a new one-of-a-kind guidebook to camping options on the way, by the way and out-of-the-way in Wyoming. It includes over 400 camps (private, forest service, BLM, Game and Fish, city, county, etc.) of which 135 areas (with 1000's of campsites) are free. There are 87 hand-drawn maps and detailed directions with mileage to one-tenth of a mile. It is not a how-to book. It is a single source of information and direction for car camping in Wyoming.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointment.......2001-06-21
The book was little more than a list. The hand drawn maps were amaturish in this day and age. It was lacking in information. Maybe I was spoiled by the "100 Best And All The Rest" book I had just purchased on Colorado campgrounds. Camping Wyoming was a waste of money.
Just what I was looking for.......2000-06-03
I was searching for a book that would tell me the information that would be most useful in searching for just the right camp site... This book has it... very informative and easy to understand without a lot of useless drivel... I wish it were available for Idaho!

Customer Reviews:
masterly written and unusually entertaining.......2002-04-24
This is certainly the best book I have read from Douglas Coupland and one of the best books by a contemporary writer. The characters are very entertaining. They each have their peculiarities and flaws, which makes them so lifelike. The story itself might be a little farfetched, but aren't we all looking for that in books? With other books I read from mr. Coupland, I always had difficulty with the lack of action, but this book is so action-packed that I simply could not put it down. This is modern literature and not just for our fast and furious MTV-influenced youth. It's about a pair of weird people who act just like you and I would in a similair situation as theirs.
Just enjoy it, I did!!!
