I'm surprised there are not many ratings for this book which is the most commonly used Income Tax book in universities. I was happy with it and found it quite challenging. Its humanly impossible to finish all the problems and exercises in a semester.

This book is filled with information but is not easy to follow. The ethical questions do not provide answers which leave you wondering if your own conclusions are accurate. The format tries to cover too much information without going in debth about anything. I used this book for an online accounting class and it was of very little help to me. This truly was one of the worst text books I've ever used.

Capital Markets and Non-bank Financial Institutions in Romania is part of the World Bank Working Paper series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank's ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion.
With only three years remaining before joining the European Union, Romania is working hard to improve its capital markets and non-bank financial institutions, which remain less developed than those in other accession countries. Strengthening these sectors has become a top priority for policymakers, whose primary objective is to ensure that the financial system is sufficiently developed to serve the growing demands of the Romanian economy.
During 2003 and 2004, the Romanian authorities made significant efforts to draft, adopt, and enact new legislation to align Romania with EU financial directives. Despite these efforts, however, challenges remain in the area of supervisory capacity and the implementation of laws and regulations.
This study assesses key issues and recommendations for development, and reviews the specific changes which are necessary in four areas: structural reforms, market institutions, and infrastructure; accounting, transparency, and disclosure; market infrastructure; and credit enhancements.

Timeless. Complete. Thorough. Essential. Do your best to add this book to your personal library collection. John Vivian is one of the key authors on Self-sufficiency, well before it become 'the ethical thing' to do. His knowledge and advice has been well-tested and has stood on firm footing through the decades.

John Vivian's book was a true discovery. This is quite possibly the most authoritative book on the subject that there is. If you are looking for comprehensive information on the practice of homesteading, sustainable living, or being socially responsible through managing your consumption, this is the best book out there, period.

Sue Robishaw takes an unusual approach in her examination of of homesteading. She converses with two imaginary characters, J. J. and CindyLou, to tell the story of Robishaw's and her husband's move to rural Northern Michigan nearly two decades ago. The three commiserate about the Robishaws' trials, learning experiences, and misconceptions. With the help of J. J. and CindyLou, Robishaw simply, often hilariously, tells her story and offers no one-size-fits-all approach to homesteading. She also describes, in great detail, gardening tips, how to construct a solar oven, recipes, ways to become more self-sufficient by growing your own food, how to build a simple structure such as a home or outbuilding, and how to deal with critters. While filled with practical how-to information, the real joy of Homesteading Adventures is the story of the Robishaws life and experiences, told with gentle humor and affection, and mercifully free of self-righteousness. It's a real treat to read.

"The entire book! There are some chunks of interspersed instructional writing, but otherwise the entire book is written in bad dialogue between two fictitious characters! They're spunky and bright-eyed and new to homesteading and have lots of questions! So you get to read all about their adventures as though you're overhearing a conversation between them! And they say everything with exclamation points!"

Wonderful Introduction To "The Road Less Traveled"!.......2002-06-13
Adherents of the `60s counterculture back-to-the-land philosophy will find much to enjoy and savor in this humorous but fact-filled book on homesteading self-sufficiency. I am lucky enough to have had a personally autographed copy of author Sue Robishaw's wonderful book "Homesteading Adventures" sitting comfortably on one of my bookshelves for years. I recently re-read it, and found it as refreshing and as practical a guide to exploring the possibilities of walking on the self-sufficient side of the dirt road as one might find out there in the Ethernet. Miss Robishaw uses the device of two fictional neophytes to pose the important questions regarding how one begins the process of shifting gears and thought processes toward increasing levels of personal responsibility for living "off the grid". And, by the time one is through casually rummaging through the pages, you find that she has cracked more than a single smile or two onto your face while also relating to you a lot of important and useful data about the possibilities for living a less materialistic and more user-friendly alternative lifestyle.
In these days of ever greater complexity and ever more complete dependence on others for the woof and warp of our daily existence, for food, water, shelter, sewage, electricity, entertainment, transportation, and clothing, one is perhaps a bit startled to discover that we can each be much more actively and "proactively" involved in this process, that each of us can garner much of what we need to survive and prosper as human beings on the surface of the planet. It often comes as a surprise because many of us are so deeply embedded in the ethos of the material culture that surrounds us that we rarely are able to independently determine or recognize how many other alternative ways to live exist, and which are there for us to employ if we have the vision, nerve, and energy to do so. In her own way, the author helps us to come to this conclusion very quietly, gently, and with more than a little humor. She is well grounded, and along the way shows us how we can do everything from build our own cabin or earth home to how to make a small but eficient greenhouse to how to design, build, and erect a functioning windmill.
While Sue Robishaw is certainly not a self-sufficiency visionary like Scott and Helen Nearing ("The Good Life"), she does provide a vital and valuable service to the reader by offering a lot of practical lessons regarding how to begin and sustain one's journey toward greater personal responsibility for one's own way of living. It is said that many millions of Americans continue to examine the basis of their own lives with an inchoate and poorly articulated dissatisfaction with the materialistic way of life they are currently embroiled in. To the extent a single book can make a practical difference in helping such folk recognize, understand, and act on this alternative vision regarding the manner in which one lives his or her life, this book is a terrific aid and a practical how-to manual rolled into one paperback volume. I highly recommend it. Enjoy!
Ideas for homesteading in the frozen North.......2002-01-06
This book is a collection of ideas for homesteaders or others who want to live simply off the land. Robishaw describes a wide variety of projects and activities that she and her husband have done to survive and thrive that come with a minimum cost to the pocketbook and the environment. These include a windmill powered well, a solar powered electrical system, a solar cooker, a solar food dryer, outhouses, homemade wine and vinegar, gardening, saving seeds, and making maple syrup. Robishaw presents the information in the form of a series of dialogues between CindyLou and JJ, a pair of newcomers to the woods, and Sue, an old-hand at homesteading. The dialogues are meant to be cute and humorous, and perhaps lighten the tone of the text. However, I found them a bit tiresome and contrived in places. The book is not filled with detailed plans for constructing equipment, although there are a few useful diagrams. Instead, its value is in stirring up ideas in the minds of the readers, and giving encouragement to go ahead and try something new because it just might work. Set in Northern Michigan, it is especially relevant for readers from far northern climates.

This book was a joy to read. Tucked within the true-to-life and often humorous accounts of the fictional couple's move to ruraldom are excellent instructions and guidelines for homesteading.
I highly recommend this book, although I wouldn't advise its use as a primary resource for homesteading.

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) offer an efficient method for finding optimal cleanup strategies for hazardous plumes contaminating groundwater by allowing hydrologists to rapidly search through millions of possible strategies to find the most inexpensive and effective containment of contaminants and aquifer restoration. ANNs also provide a faster method of developing systems that classify seismic events as being earthquakes or underground explosions.
Farid Dowla and Leah Rogers have developed a number of ANN applications for researchers and students in hydrology and seismology. This book, complete with exercises and ANN algorithms, illustrates how ANNs can be used in solving problems in environmental engineering and the geosciences, and provides the necessary tools to get started using these elegant and efficient new techniques.
Following the development of four primary ANN algorithms (backpropagation, self-organizing, radial basis functions, and hopfield networks), and a discussion of important issues in ANN formulation (generalization properties, computer generation of training sets, causes of slow training, feature extraction and preprocessing, and performance evaluation), readers are guided through a series of straightforward yet complex illustrative problems. These include groundwater remediation management, seismic discrimination between earthquakes and underground explosions, automated monitoring for acoustic and seismic sensor data, estimation of seismic sources, geospatial estimation, lithologic classification from geophysical logging, earthquake forecasting, and climate change. Each chapter contains detailed exercises often drawn from field data that use one or more of the four primary ANN algorithms presented.

Nine Wives is an unabashedly honest insight into the mind of Henry Mann, a thirty-something unmarried legal assistant/musician in Manhattan. Now that all his friends are getting married, Henry can no longer hear a woman's name without measuring her long-term potential, so the novel chronicles a series of (mis)adventures between himself and nine female prospects (some real, some imaginary). Even though this book was written by a man about a man (hence the protagonist's last name "Mann"), women readers can totally identify with Henry's hang-ups, hopes and self-doubts. If anything, Henry's behaviors show how similar the genders are (I was surprised and relieved to read that men too have elaborate fantasies about their wedding day even before the first date). And as for the quality of the writing, it's absolutely on target--smart without being pretentious, thorough without feeling tedious, and funny without jeopardizing the story's gravity. It's also lovingly peppered with dozens of apt literary and musical references. Often bittersweet and always true, Nine Wives is a perfect ten!

This is a charming and endearing novel which is wonderfully evocative about the world of 30-something singles, New York City struggling artists and the humorously devastating (and devastatingly humorous) pitfalls on the road to love. The characters are beautifully etched and the book is often laugh-out loud funny. A most enjoyable read.

What an entertaining dive into what are revealed to be the tragically shallow workings of the male mind! Henry is a modern Walter Mitty, a man who takes you though the wild roller coaster ride of his over active imagination, revealing all of his flaws, insecurities and just plain neurotic tendencies. All the while making the reader root for his success. I loved that Henry seemed so real and I did so want for him to find true love. Henry is the Bridget Jones of the Manhattan Set, and I want the sequel!

This book is incredibly humorous, entertaining and insightful. You're taken on an honest mental trip, never knowing what could possibly happen next. "Nine Wives" is a creative and original read!

This book is a pleasant and funny look at a single 30-something in Manhattan looking for the woman of his dreams. It's an easy read and very likeable. It's not particularly deep or profound, but it's not a waste of time either.
