The book of Krister Holmberg serves as an excellent starting point for anyone that wants to know more about available options with respect to increasing the solid content of solventbased coatings. The topic is gaining in interest now that the use of solvents becomes more and more under pressure. Also, it becomes clear that waterbased coatings have their limitations especially in applications in which temperature and humidity are difficult to control. The key concepts that can be used to improve properties of high solids alkyds are discussed in a clear and illustrative way, for example: control of molecular weight, choice of solvent, reactive diluents and branching. Despite the book being published in 1987, the concepts are still valid. Possibly the time has come for an update that includes the latest developments especially with respect to hyperbranched technology.

I've found the information in the book very useful when discussing mobilization and remobilization of organics and the transformation through biodegradation and chemical oxidation. The text is well written and easy to follow. I've also used this when discussing vadose zone characteristics Section 1: Contaminant Vapors as a Component of Soil Gas in the Unsaturated Zone, has been useful. The text also goes on to discribe dissolved phase and contaminants sorbed to colloidal particles and dissolved in the mobile pore water of the unsaturated zone.

To minimize purchased inputs, sustainable agriculture systems often use green- or animal-manure as a nitrogen source for crops. The addition of these materials also have positive impacts on soil phosphorus (P) availability. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of animal- and legume-based cropping systems in place for 5-13 years on the chemistry of organic matter and soil P. Two cropping systems, Potato Ecosystem (ECO) located in Presque Isle, ME, U.S.A. and Grass Fertility (GF) located in Stillwater, ME, U.S.A. received animal manure. Two others, Liebman E Rotation (LER) in Stillwater, ME, U.S.A. and Porter Rotation (PR) in Presque Isle, ME, U.S.A. were primarily legume-based rotations. Estimated difference in carbon input (ha^-^1year^-^1) between the amended and control plots were: ECO, 8100kg C; GF, 1010kg; LER, 950kg C; and PR, 415kg C. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration was higher (P
< 0.10) in the treatment that received animal manure than those which only received legume residue. The E2/E3 spectrophotometric test indicated that the DOC extracted from the ECO manure-treated plots was more humified than that from the ECO control plots. There were no significant differences between the amended and control treatments in Olsen P or total P for all the tested cropping systems. Similar to that of the DOC response, the ECO cropping system that received animal manure recorded higher concentrations of water soluble P (P
< 0.05). There was a linear relationship between DOC and water-soluble P concentrations of the soil:water extract across soils, indicating a positive relationship between them. To determine the effects of the different cropping systems on P bioavailability, a simulation model was used to study how changes in P soil chemistry may affect P uptake by crops. The simulation runs showed that predicted P uptake was greater for the animal manure based ECO and GF systems, but not for the legume based LER and PR systems (P
< 0.05). This study shows that cropping systems that include animal manure may increase soil P availability.

Pinon (Pinus edulis)-juniper (Juniperus monosperma)-ecosystems increased substantially in the western USA during the 20th century. Sustainability of these ecosystems primarily depends on soil quality and water availability. This study was undertaken with the objective of assessing the effect of tree species on soil physical quality in a semi-arid region in the western part of Sugarite Canyon, northeast of Raton, Colfax County, NM (37^o56'32''N and 104^o23'00''W) USA. Three cores and three bulk soil samples were obtained from the site under the canopy of three juniper, Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) and pinon trees for 0-10 and 10-20cm depths. These samples were analyzed for particle size distribution, soil bulk density (@r"b), water stable aggregation (WSA), mean weight diameter (MWD) of aggregates, pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations and stocks. Sand content was greater under juniper (48%) than oak (32%), whereas clay content followed the opposite trend. The @r"b, WSA, MWD, pH and EC were similar under juniper, pinon, oak canopies for both depths. Estimated (from Philip and Green and Ampt infiltration models) and measured water infiltration parameters did not vary among these sites and were in accord with the values for @r"b, WSA and MWD. The SOC concentrations and stocks were greater under oak (43.1Mgha^-^1 for 0-10 and 37.5Mgha^-^1 for 10-20cm depths) than pinon (23.3Mgha^-^1 for 0-10 and 18.5Mgha^-^1 for 10-20cm depths). The TN concentrations were greater under oak (3.4gkg^-^1) than pinon (1.7gkg^-^1) for the 0-10cm depth only. Accumulation of detritus material under tree canopies reduced soil compaction and crusting caused by raindrop impact and increased SOC, and TN concentrations, and water infiltration. Coefficients of variation ranged from low to moderate for most soil properties except infiltration rate at 2.5h, which was highly variable. Overall, soil quality for each site was good and soil aggregation, water infiltration and SOC concentrations were high, and soil @r"b was low.

Loess soils cover vast areas in the arid and semi-arid regions of northern China. Due to the lack of reliable surface water and ground-water, rainwater harvesting has played a prominent role in farmers' domestic usage and agricultural irrigation. An economical and valid type of water storage cistern with optimum design of components has been introduced to rural areas in the Loess Plateau. Different collection alternatives showed apparent variations in rainwater quality. By using different catchments, such as mortar roofs and cement-paved courtyards, compacted land or road surfaces, rainwater can be effectively collected for storage in cisterns. This study focused mainly on the quality of rainwater harvested from the different catchment systems and stored for different periods of time. By analysis of the water samples stored in these cisterns, it was evident that rainwater quality could be improved significantly by self-purification during the storage. With emphasis on rainwater quality affected by the different catchment systems, it was found that the measured inorganic compounds in the rainwater harvested from roof-yard catchment systems generally matched the WHO standards for drinking water, while the concentrations of some inorganic compounds in the rainwater collected from land and road surfaces appeared to be higher than the guideline values for drinking water, but generally not beyond the maximum permissible concentrations. However, Fecal Coliform, which is an important bacteriological parameter for the three catchment systems, exceeded the limits of drinking water to a greater extend. Trace amounts of 55 organic pollutants were identified, including aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic compounds and phthalate esters, etc. The analytical results indicated that roof-yard catchments that included the ''first flush'' usually provided safe drinking water with low organic contents, even for rainwater collected immediately after rainfall. In contrast, rainwater harvested from road surfaces had poor quality with respect to the organic constituents, regardless of stored time.

Change in vegetation and edaphic properties as influenced by chemical creosotebush control were examined in the Chihuahuan desert of southern New Mexico. From 1981 to 2001, under a program administered by Bureau of Land Management, tebuthiuron herbicide was applied by aircraft to 67 distinct land areas. Treatments provided on average 85% creosotebush mortality and reduced canopy cover by about 95%. Grass cover increased after creosotebush removal and the ratio of mid to short species increased with time from treatment. With the exception of bulk density, aggregate stability, and calcium, most soil properties analysed in the study were not significantly different among geographic regions, herbicide treatments, or creosotebush condition (live vs. dead plants). Results indicated a trend of nitrogen and phosphorus shifting from the canopy zone towards interspace areas following creosotebush death.

This is a wonderful book that offers the meaning of unconditional love. It touches the heart and expresses how true love will go to any depths. Although it was penned as a childrens book I gave this book to my sweetheart and it was a very tender gift. It is an excellent choice for both children and adults.

Ann Ashford's IF I FOUND A WISTFUL UNICORN, is no fantasy book, or even a children's book to take lightly. It is a book that possesses a strong gift of love which should be given to someone special when they are in a time of need, or are just looking for a quick pick-me-up when they're feeling down. The lovely, almost hypnotizing prose is enchanting, while the illustrations, done by Bill Drath, are utterly gorgeous. Overall, this is a wonderful book that should be given to someone whom you truly love, and cherish.

I was given this book as a very small child, and I found myself often enthralled with the rhyme making up the message of the book, along with its pleasant illustrations; as a matter of fact, I still own it. Even though my standards were not very high in those days, I still have to say that this book is just altogether sweet.

My sons, all three of them, have listened to me read this book over and over again. I love the way they answer all the questions as we read the book! We look for the unicorn in each picture as well as the illustrations for each line in the poem . . . it is wonderful and a great memory to pass on as each in turn enjoys the time spent reading this book!

Long out of print, If I Found A Wistful Unicorn had the honor of being the first title ever published by the Atlanta based Peachtree Publishers back in 1978. Now a 25th Anniversary edition has once again made this wonderful and enthusiastically recommended little volume available to a new and appreciative generation of young readers (and adults too, for that matter!). Ann Ashford's simple but elegant poem that explores the heart and core of what constitutes love is superbly enhanced by the endearing artwork of Bill Drath. If you only have time to sit down with a child to read one picturebook story poem -- make it Ann Ashford and Bill Drath's If I Found A Wistful Unicorn!
