CPA Wiley 11.0 Not Worth $.......2006-11-17

I've ordered two copies of this CD. The first one didn't work. I thought it was a lemon, so I returned it and got another copy. It has the same glitches. This time, I went to the tech support for Wiley and apparently this version has problems galore. The file I downloaded did not rectify the problem, so I will be returning this copy as well.

This book explains the use and techniques of paleomagnetism to map the movement of major portions of the Earth’s surface through time. Written for a geological audience, the initial chapters provide the basic essentials for understanding the value and significance of paleomagnetic results. The later chapters are unique in bringing together the vast amounts of available paleomagnetic data and analyses. This information is integrated with the paleogeography and tectonic movements of the blocks and placed in context with current tectonic hypotheses. This book describes baryon models constructed from quarks, mesons and chiral symmetry. The role of chiral symmetry and of quark model structure with SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry are discussed in detail, starting from a pedagogic introduction. Emphasis is placed on symmetry aspects of the theories. As an application, the chiral bag model is studied for nucleon structure, where important methods of theoretical physics, mostly related to the semiclassical approach for a system of strong interactions, are demonstrated. The text is more practical than formal; tools and ideas are explained in detail while solving actual problems. By checking each step of the computations, readers can learn not only the calculational techniques but also the essential ideas behind them.

My Mother Loved This, But..........2005-05-09

According to her, this is a single volume that contains "The Diary of a Provincial Lady" ONLY. The editorial review from Amazon states that this edition also includes several sequels. Apparently it does not. Still worth the price, according to Mom; she found it absolutely delightful.

Terribly, awfully, wonderful book of life between the wars.......2003-11-05

This charming book was written in the period between the wars, and tells of the daily trials and tribulations of the Provincial Lady - dealing with the servants, nosy neighbours, the horribly snobbish local 'upper class', the husband who hides behind the paper. Always told with style and wit, we observe life for the lady in question as she tries to balance the accounts (never a success - where does it all go?), help out at the local Women's Institute, keep her wardrobe up to date and deal with such important issues as modern parenting, keeping one's brain active when living outside of London, and the delicate balance of letting the husband know not too much or too little.

The stand-out thing about this book is the character descriptions and her take on everyday life. If anyone ever tells you people were much nicer/politer in the good old days, just refer them to this book, which shows that there was just as many selfish, impolite, venal, self-centred and downright rude people in the 'good old days' as there are today. We just need to hope that we can deal with them with as much style and aplomb as the Provincial Lady would.

British Wit. Same women world as we know it..........2003-07-20

Am determined to write impressions from this book in the style of "the Provincial Lady" herself. Am doubtful however as to the outcomes of this effort as my highest labors would not reach the dry frank witticism she displays.
Provincial Lady does her best to satisfy the wishes of silent husband (... "Robert, this morning, complains of insufficient breakfast. Cannot feel that porridge, scrambled eggs, toast, marmalade, scones, brown bread and coffee give adequate grounds for this, but admit that porridge is slightly burnt...."), intimidating cook, beloved children (... "Robin - whom I refer to in a detached way as "the boy" so that she shan't think I am foolish about him..., "Vicky,.... Enquires abruptly whether, if she died, I should cry?"), Mademoiselle (the nanny), Gardner and all kinds of friends and neighbors including the tiring Lady Birkenshop, "our vicar's wife" and the hated Mrs. B. ("query: Is not a common hate one of the strongest links in human nature?... answer, most regrettably, in the affirmative.")
This is the same women world. Husband is as usual quiet and does not give any consolation and the Lady struggles to please everyone and not forget herself and her own wishes (and health) on the way. How very sad to discover it was the same (woman) world even 70 years ago ... Book is so very candid and manages to capture the ever lasting nuances of human behavior ("Mem: Candid and intelligent self examination as to motive, etc., often leads to very distressing revelations...."), little lies, social pretenses and the day to day struggles. Funny and entertaining yet can be tiring at times - since the day to day life is indeed tiring . Very very British and thus charming.

Witty stay at home mum's life, dated and timeless too.......2001-10-05

I reread this every year or two, and love it each time. Admittedly,a product of its time and place, capturing life among the genteely-poor gentry in an English village between the wars(WW's I & II). The diary format makes the provincial lady's narration of and commentary on the events around her doubly funny, as she struggles to run her household and not be driven crazy by nice but dull husband, snobbish wife of husband's boss,disputes among servants,quandaries about children, etc.--and to find time to keep a sense of herself as a professional writer. Not deep, but funny and often touching.

Charming but Dated.......2001-05-22

This was a simply written and quite charming novel. Whilst it did give an insight into the lives of a moderately wealthy English family in 1931, it lacked plot and real structure and for this reason I am unlikely to read more by this author at this stage - especially when there are simply too many other great books out there to read. A gentle, easy read but a little disappointing.

Diary of a Mad Housewife.......2006-10-04

I'm reading the US version which for some reason is called THE PROVINCIAL LADY IN LONDON (instead of GOES FURTHER, as in the original). Well, I can see why the publishers decided to change the name, but it's a shame in a way, and also rather confusing, for many of the best parts of the novel take place not in London at all, but at the seashore, out in the country, travelling here and there and especially during a writers' conference in Brussels, Delafield's account of which is a tiny masterpiece of xenophobia and possibly the funniest bit in the book.

I never read the first one, just landed on this, and I can see why people so admire the author, who conjures up an irresistible atmosphere of wit and embarrassment, and has made herself the butt of most of the jokes, so that she nowhere fits in, and always winds up feeling ridiculous. Her opposite number is a schoolfriend who has kept her girlish looks and sex appeal far beyond their selling point, yet who manages still to turn heads everywhere she goes, a selfish and avaricious woman in a way, but one to whom our narrator still looks for excitement and reflected glamor: she never puts her down fully, she remains as marvelous as she herself believes she is--she's the immortal "Pamela Pringle," so often married that the narrator can never remember what her current surname is.

Meanwhile the verbal texture of the novel, imitating as it does the telegraphese of a shorthand diary, eliminates most articles like "the" or "a," and in fact gets rid of "I" most of the time, as though she were trying to write as much as possible in an abbreviated space. So the complexities of each sentence reflect, i suppose, the modernist and surrealist chic of the day like Gertrude Stein, Mina loy, Nancy Cunard, etc. "Should like to deny violently having ever taken any advice of Miss P's at all, or even noticed that she'd given it, but she goes on to say that I ought to pay more attention to Style--and I diverge into wondering inwardly whether she means prose, or clothes. (If the latter, this is icredible audacity, as Miss P's own costume--on broiling summer's day--consists of brick-red cloth dress, peppered with glass knobs, and surmounted by abominable little brick-red three-tiered cape, closely fastened under her chin.)"

Adding to the difficulty of the book is the fact that Arthur Watts' cunning illustrations are set in plates pages and pages after the incidents they illustrate, so you feel yourself constantly pulled back into the past narrative just when you should be churning forward. It's bizarre (but must be some hangover from primitive printing processes)? And not a problem for Provincial fans.

Urbane and amusing.......2003-05-14

The Provincial Lady books are fictitious diaries and as such, are written in abbreviated phrases, memos to the writer herself. This type of writing does get a bit monotonous, but the content, the account of an almost famous writer from one of England's southern counties (before WW II) is very diverting. Having achieved a modest success with her first diary, the Provincial Lady is now invited to international literary conferences, but must cope with the fact that she is still an unknown, and is often forced to fake acquaintanceship with books she hasn't read. Although her literary agent waits eagerly for her latest book (necessitating the renting of a London flat in order to have uninteruppted time to write) she still deals with an embarassing lack of funds in her bank account. This oscillation between the trajectory of her career and the earthbound concerns of money and child-rearing constitute a major theme. Anyone who has ever had to balance career and, say, laundry, will get a kick out of the conundrum. A witty read by an engaging writer equipped with senses of irony and absurdity. Imagine Erma Bombeck transplanted to 1930's England, and I think you'll get some idea of our heroine.

Utterly delicious, not to be missed.......1998-08-27

The Provincial Lady series are classics of social comedy and anyone who has not already discovered them is in for a treat. EM Delafield was a successful lady author who publised a weekly diary in Time and Tide which was a masterpeice of social comedy. END
