Thorough and comrehensive.......2006-08-10

This book is a perfect trade off between simplified "for-dummies" type writing that simply acquaints you with the subject matter and a comprehensive text that thoroughly covers the subject. If you are a CPA hopeful, a governmental finance professional or a political science graduate student this is the text for you. Although layout and vocabulary could be simplified for improved readability, once you become familiar with the authors' style the reading is enjoyable.

This Book is Horrible.......2006-06-18

This book is poorly written. Unless you know Non-profit accounting, it is not written so that you will learn anything. I'm assuming professors use this book because of the Smithville case and for no other reason. Honestly, I do not feel the Smithville case goes along with the book very well. The authors should have exchanged notes a little more. Unless it is required or you are already working in non-profit accounting, I would not buy this book.

Please, no one buy this book... it will torture you like nothing else can. This book actually deserves -5 stars for how terribly written it is. The authors seem to repeat the same sentences in 5 or 6 different ways. It is poorly organized, it doesn't seem to have any real objective... a little bit of this here and a little bit of that there. Also, it is completely black and white with absolutely no pictures and very few illustrations... it will be of absolutely no help to a visual learner.

I needed this book for a governmental accounting course in college and when my bookstore wouldn't buy it back from me I wept tears. Luckily, my governmental accounting professor was really good otherwise there is no way I would have learned anything from this course. If you can possibly find some other book or maybe a newer edition would be better. The only somewhat helpful thing about this book was the City of Smithville project (CD-ROM) but even that had problems. It had a lot of technical difficulties and if you messed up an entry you pretty much had to start the project all over again. If you are doing City of Smithville, beware!

Excellent reference for government professionals.......2001-01-01

I purchased this book to study for the FGFOA exam and have found it to be an outstanding reference. The book is very readable and covers many critical areas in governmental accounting and finance. Its well worth the cost.

Poor........2007-05-11

I must say I bought this book due to the attention given to the rise of Shia Islam in Iraq especially from Muqtada al-Sadr and his private army who have done so much to demolish Iraqs stability with his private army of South American style death squads.

I was interested in Muhammad Baqir as unlike Muqtada whose religious knowledge seems to come from Mullahs abroad and qualifications from little more than his family name (which he seems to use and exploit at every available opportunity) he was at least a well respected scholar (amongst Shia at least) in spite of being the co-founder (along with Muhammda Baqir al-Hakim (famed for his 'Badr brigade' the death squads of Basra and its surroundings)) in forming the Iranian backed Islamist movement in Iraq he was seen as more moderate than Khomeni.

This book however is to say the least a toil to read. Slow and lacking in any real commentary or explaination to the text. While there is an introduction to Islamic law including the history of its development I feel there sould have been more concentration on the actual text in order to make it at least more readable.

While this book may be of interest especially with ongoing events in Iraq it would certainly take more than just a passing read and perhaps recomended only to those with a deep interest in Shia Islamic law.

Excellent and Long overdue.......2003-09-05

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. As-Sadr was a top scholar killed by Saddam and this translation was long overdue. I should think anyone who teaches Islamic law in the West would find it essential.

Following the Chernobyl accident, although the most urgent immediate countermeasures which were implemented concerned the evacuation and/or protection populations within a few hundred kilometers of Chernobyl, the most widely applied countermeasures throughout the rest of the world were agricultural in nature. These included the measurement of contamination levels in foods, the interdiction of some areas from agricultural use, the interdiction of some crops and livestock from sale or use, and later the use of various methods of decontamination. Eight years after the accident, much practical experience in terms of the application of these counter measures has been gained. These proceedings present the results of a workshop organized by the NEA on these issues. Conclusions drawn by the workshop participants show that, although considerable experience has been gained, there is still need for considerable work to be performed in terms of the practical problems associated with the implementation of large-scale countermeasures. Recommendations are made by the conference participants.

Shallow and insipid.......2007-07-30

Writer and editor Benjamin Franklin (a name that unto itself is gag-worthy) seems to have the perfect life. Except, she spends her nigts at parties hoping to find someone to replace the hole tat her ex boyfriend Jack left. Enter Max, who seems like the perfect guy... until he turns out to be seven years younger than Ben. When she tries to get him to commit to a relationship, the predictable happens--he runs away. The plot spirals downwards from there, leading to NOTHING. That is, as other readers said, the book had no discernable ending!

The characters, Ben included, are all shallow--there were numerous places in the book where I just wanted to scream at Ben for acting as dumb as she acts. Sure, the games, quizzes, and little bits of trivia are cute, and serve to distract from the fact that the book has no substance. Definitely a miss.

Are you kidding me?.......2007-03-30

"Are you kidding me?" is what I said when I finished reading this book. I enjoyed the easy read of this book until the end. This. Book. Has. No. Conclusion. To. Any. Of. The. Plots. I feel like I wasted my valuable time reading this book.

Interesting look at the dating scene.......2006-05-23

I was so disgusted with the last few chick-lit books I read, I was ready to give up on the genre. However, I got this as a gift and was pleasantly surprised. If it were a little deeper and had a real conclusion, I would give it four stars.

What I found interesting was the dating etiquette that seems to exist with young hipster-types. Ben was in a sexual relationship with young Max, but could not show him any affection or refer to him as her boyfriend. The minute she let on that she wasn't just having repeated casual sex with him, he took off, and she blamed herself. Is this a realistic portrait of the 20-something dating scene? Sadly, I think it probably is. I would have liked to see some personal growth by the protagonist--she had to actually remind herself to do something besides chase men--but besides that, the book was interesting, worth a check-out from the library, at least.

Chick Lit: A Guide to Female Depression.......2006-04-26

If you're needing another reason for pop culture to inject itself into your psyche, if television commericials, magazines, and movies aren't making you feel fat or poor enough, why not let it take over your reading as well? Our poor narrator, Ben, after chasing a man seven years younger than her, is devistated when he doesn't return her affections, sending her into a forseen spiral of pizza boxes and cigarette butts. If you are a woman, please don't participate in this backlash to feminism. We don't need men, purses, pointy shoes or size zero pants to feel like successful, beautiful women.

Utterly Disappointed.......2006-02-22

If you've read the other reviews, you should know the plot by now... it's disgusting. There are absolutely no redeeming qualities to this book what-so-ever. I bought it (on clearance thank God) looking for a no-need-to-think good time girl read. What I got was an answer to why my boyfriend is afraid of American women. No wonder men shrink away from us for what seems to me to be no reason at all.
Were I to conduct my life like the main character Ben, I'd be $100,000 in debt, have slept with over 60 men, and have the lowest self-esteem in the world. Had Ben simply told Max that she was looking for a relationship and didn't want to screw around wondering where the heck this relationship is going... she would have saved herself a TON of trouble. Mothers, do NOT let your daughters read this book. They may believe this is normal behavior to be emulated.
I wish it were legal to press charges for small homicides. I feel like Ms. Kizis has killed me... but just a little. I will never be able to gain back those lost six hours, and now I feel I have gotten dumber. And I haven't even mentioned the atrocius grammar or the complete inability to write.
