Forget 'Hedge Funds' for a moment - - this is a great book for introducing you to stocks, shares, buying and selling - ie, the whole business of the stock market.

The bonus is that the last 2-3 chapters, which finally get around to looking at Hedge Funds, are really clear and helpful.

In the realm of how-to books, "All About Hedge Funds" by Dr. Robert Jaeger is a real winner. Instructive, analytical and easy to read, it brings down to earth an investment tool that has long been a mystery to me and many others. The author, for more than 20 years the chief investment officer of a well-respected hedge fund, explains in a clear insightful style risk assessment, hedging techniques and many other facets of this intriguing method of investing. He includes the historical background which has shaped the hedge fund we know today. I found the book invaluable.

good industry introduction - good value.......2007-06-28

I've recommended this book many times to people who are new to working in the hedge fund industry. Though it's a couple of years old, it's a very readable overview of what hedge funds are about and how they work. Unlike many hedge fund books on the market, this one is both reasonably priced and useful.

I was looking for an introduction to hedge funds and found this book to be great as it builds up your knowledge starting at ground level with many comparisons between hedge funds and mutual funds and then it delves deeper into the specifics and peculiarities of hedge funds themselves including shorting, leverage, and other tactics.

Page 181 of this 309-page book starts with: "We have spent a lot of time looking at investment issues related to hedge funds: investment objectives, strategies, techniques, and so forth. The next few chapters take a brief look at some of the business and operational issues that arise in the hedge fund world." Finally! Well, page 205 hurries back to "The Menu of Hedge Fund Strategies" about longs and shorts, stocks and bonds and indexes and volatility. Why a publisher would cheat his readers with a title like "All about Hedge Funds" for what is just some investor's handbook is beyond me. Imagine considering serious participation in such fund and the term "Private Placement Memorandum" isn't even mentioned once in this book. Probably the author never heard of it: he intended to write about investing and did, but, discouraged by the crowded market in these books, shuffled in 23 pages about hedge funds so he could rename his book. I fell into the trap, make sure you don't.

One of the funniest crime stories ever........2007-06-21

Gentle, distant Fred Fitch is the world's easiest mark. He knows every con game going but that doesn't stop him from being a victim over and over again. He's not stupid, he just has an overabundance of faith in his fellow man. But what good can possibly befall such a guy when he inherits $300,000? That's just the beginning of this funny, imaginative story as Fred gets taken for the ride of his life. This one was a delight, beginning to end.

While I wouldn't call it hilarious, this is an entertaining and often funny book with an amazingly gullable but likable hero and an interesting mystery.

I enjoyed the story and am surprised it hasn't already been turned into some sort of movie.

Donald E. Westlake is one of the very best writers of semi-serious or comic crime fiction. Others in this category are Lawrence Block, Tamar Myers, Carl Hiaasen, and Janet Evanovich. The Dortmunder series are perhaps Westlake's best, but "God Save the Mark" is a fine example of the Westlake talent writing farce.

The central character, hardly a hero in the usual sense, tries very hard to be rational and brave, but he is more akin to Jackie Gleason's The Poor Soul than to Mike Hammer. Fred Fitch is, simply put, a sucker--a sucker for every conman grifter in the world. Then out of nowhere he inherits a fortune (a fortune in 1967, when this was first published) and suddenly old Fred finds himself a target for bullets rather than grifts. And now he is on the run.

There are few laugh-out-loud moments--although Fred's attempt to report to the NYPD of a kidnapping is worth more than a smile. The city is a more or less constant threat to Fred. Ditto for all of the characters he meets. They could give anyone paranoia. The dialogue is as good as that of Lawrence Block's.

In short, this is fun to read as a comedy and as a murder mystery.

Humorous crime story.......2006-09-01

This book starts out a bit slow & a bit annoying with its unbelievably naive hero & a song-and-dance team of homicide detectives. But it gets lots better if you persist. The hero grows quickly in self-confidence & resistance to cons. The author plays fair with the reader--providing sufficient clues to deduce the mystery. The plot is clever if a bit far-fetched. The characters are fun (e.g. Gertie Divine) and likable. There are a few very good lines: p. 110: "A man I wouldn't trust with a subway token in the Sahara" & p. 239: "It's discouraging to be a pariah." The book reminds me of Lawrence Block's series on Burglar Bernie Rhodenbarr--humor, mystery, & interesting characters.

Still As Good As It Was Forty Years Ago.......2005-10-02

I've owned two previous copies of this hilarious novel by the best comic mystery writer I've ever encountered, Donald Westlake. I bought it when it first came out in the late 1960s, later had it in paperback, and now it's been reprinted again. Fred Fitch has to be one of the funniest protagonists in a mystery novel ever. OK, he's drawn a bit unrealistically -- I mean, has anyone ever been as dumb and yet articulate as he? I doubt it. But the notion of his being the easiest mark ever (hence the title) is a hilarious set-up for a book, and Westlake makes you chortle (well, I chortle, but perhaps you guffaw or snort) on practically every page.

A definite recommendation, particularly for those Westlake fans who may have missed this one the first time around.
