      Book Description

The entropy concept was developed and used by Shannon in 1940 as a measure of uncertainty in the context of information theory. In 1957 Jaynes made use of Shannon's entropy concept as a basis for estimation and inference in problems that are ill-suited for traditional statistical procedures. This volume consists of two sections. The first section contains papers developing econometric methods based on the entropy principle. An interesting array of applications is presented in the second section of the volume.

              Book Description

The chapters in this Proceedings are divided into six areas of interest, reflecting the six sessions of the symposium: (1) Global patterns of carbon allocation and partitioning; (2) Managed and unmanaged ecosystems; (3) Sustainable agroecosystems; (4) Groundwater quality; (5) Genetics, physiology, and molecular biology; and (6) Contemporary methods for measuring root dynamics. The sponsoring society has made a particular effort in these symposia to include root scientists from the former Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact countries. Therefore, when combined with manuscripts from the U.S.A., western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, P.R. China and Asia, a good sampling of world root research is presented in the sixty-seven chapters. This volume should prove valuable as a reference and source of communication for root scientists.

                  Book Description

In this book, Professor van Andel, a distinguished earth scientist, interweaves the major strands of change taking place on the earth - continental drift, climatic fluctuations and the progression of life - into a carefully constructed historical account of the evolution of the earth. He does this against a backdrop of evolving ideas; the outlook of geologists everywhere has been profoundly altered by the adoption of the theory of continental drift, and with this change have come wholly new interpretations of earth history. In a unique manner, blending information with illustrations and through experiments, the author elaborates on such topics as the rock record, the mechanisms of climatic change, the process of plate tectonics and continental drift, the progression of life and its numerous catastrophic setbacks.

                    Book Description

Substances possessing heterogeneous microstructure on the nanometer and micron scales are scientifically fascinating and technologically useful. Examples of such substances include liquid crystals, microemulsions, biological matter, polymer mixtures and composites, vycor glasses, and zeolites. In this volume, an interdisciplinary group of researchers report their developments in this field. Topics include statistical mechanical free energy theories which predict the appearance of various microstructures, the topological and geometrical methods needed for a mathematical description of the subparts and dividing surfaces of heterogeneous materials, and modern computer-aided mathematical models and graphics for effective exposition of the salient features of microstructured materials.

                      Book Description

Defects and geometrical patterns embedded in orderly arrays of atoms and molecules explain important everyday phenomena such as why soap is slippery, why steel is strong, and how a liquid crystal display device works. An understanding of how to pin vortex defects in superconductors is essential for applications such as magnetic levitation and improved magnetic resonance imaging devised for medical diagnosis. This book discusses the crucial role played by defects and geometry in disrupting order in solids, superconductors, superfluids, liquid crystals and polymers.

                        Book Description

The development of new experimental techniques to study phenomena, such as the anomalous skin effect, cyclotron resonance in magnetic fields normal to then metal surface, and high-frequency properties of metals, as well as the discovery of collective excitations arising from electron-electron correlations, have offered a new impetus for the analysis of the electronic properties of metals. This book discusses the local geometry of the Fermi surface and its effects on high-frequency phenomena in metals and metallic conductors. After an introductory chapter reviewing the electron-liquid theory of metals the discussion turns to techniques useful in analyzing properties of real Fermi surfaces, which are rarely spherical. In subsequent chapters these techniques are applied to concrete problems such as the anomalous skin effect, cyclotron resonance, attenuation of ultrasonic fields, dopplerons, the effects of zero-curvature portions of the Fermi surface, and the behavior of the Fermi surface in low-dimensional structures.

                                Book Description

Recent interactions between the fields of geometry, classical and quantum dynamical systems, and visualization of geometric objects such as curves and surfaces have led to the observation that most concepts of surface theory and of the theory of integrable systems have natural discrete analogues. These are characterized by the property that the corresponding difference equations are integrable, and has led in turn to some important applications in areas of condensed matter physics and quantum field theory, amongst others. The book combines the efforts of a distinguished team of authors from various fields in mathematics and physics in an effort to provide an overview of the subject. The mathematical concepts of discrete geometry and discrete integrable systems are firstly presented as fundamental and valuable theories in themselves. In the following part these concepts are put into the context of classical and quantum dynamics.

                                  Book Description

Fractal Functions, Fractal Surfaces, and Wavelets is the first systematic exposition of the theory of fractal surfaces, a natural outgrowth of fractal sets and fractal functions. It is also the first treatment to bring these general considerations to bear on the burgeoning field of wavelets. The text is based on Massopusts work on and contributions to the theory of fractal functions, and the author uses a number of tools--including analysis, topology, algebra, and probability theory--to introduce readers to this new subject. Though much of the material presented in this book is relatively current (developed in the past decade by the author and his colleagues) and fairly specialized, an informative background is provided for those

The book provides a lot of material but it left me the impression of a core material hidden in "a bit too many" technicalities, being the textbook more likely suitable as a reference for a specialist (I am not) than for a reader interested in the subject. I really appreciated the chapter "Fractal Functions and Wavelets", a good description of links beetween wavelets and fractals.

4 out of 5 stars Another terrific Russell Quant mystery.......2007-10-03

This was the third of the Russell Quant mysteries I read. The second one was "Tapas on the Ramblas", which took place on a cruise ship, and as I had just finished a Mediterranean cruise, it was very easy to put myself into the story. Each of the books was a new adventure and this one was another new and exciting adventure. I actually feel like I know personally a lot of the characters, especially Russell. And I've learned so much about a part of Canada that I knew nothing about. When I finished this one I couldn't wait to get on to the next one.The writing is so good.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A Great & Original Mystery Series.......2007-08-23

I was pleasantly suprised by the first book in the Russell Quant mystery series. An intersesting unstereotypical Gay PI as the main character, original plotting w/ plenty of twists & refreshing, interesting locales & characters. I was soon hooked & upon finishing immediately ordered the rest of the books in the series. Highly recomended.

4 out of 5 stars Great debut from Bidulka.......2006-11-14

To make it short, I'll just go through the parts I liked and those I didn't.

Good: The Saskatoon setting, through which I became aquainted with an entire city I would never have though twice about. Had to pull out the big guns (atlas) to see where it was. Being surprised at every metion of Canada being home made me realize that I read way too many USA-centric books. The book is well-written. The amount of introspection came just to the line before snooze fest. The characters are interesting and engaging, although some more than the narrator. The ending more than makes up for the simplistic climax. Russell Quant's little world is a comfortable place to be. If you like a mystery with minimal violence, good style, and a character-driven plot, this is for you.

Bad: The first two big twists, so to speak, were so easy to guess it was almost painful. Being ahead of the detective is frustrating. The author abandoned suspects and, at the end, you know it's going to be one of two people.

The book takes on almost a literature feel to it. It is labled mystery/gay literature. A nice little hybrid. I found it enjoyable and would read more titles in this series.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A Tasty Treat!.......2006-06-14

I have to start by saying I think that Tony Bidulka is handsome and charming. But do I let that prejudice my opinion of his books?

Fortunately, that's not a problem, because Amuse Bouche is just as charming as Tony himself is. It's evocative and well-written; it made me want to jump on a plane and head right for France, where his first big case takes rookie private eye Russell Quant.

The mystery is intriguing, and I love that Russell keeps a file he calls "red herrings," which are there to tantalize and mislead the reader as well, yet are cleverly wrapped up by the end of the book.

                                    I highly recommend Amuse Bouche!

Amuse Bouche are little tastes served at the beginning of the meal - but this thriller by Canadian author Anthony Bidulka is a full and hearty meal that will leave you wanting more. Meet Russell Quant and his very real and human cast of friends and foes - someone for eveyone.
