Apoptosis and the Immune Response
Manufacturer: Wiley-Liss ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0471012513 |
Book Description
Apoptosis and the Immune ResponseEdited by Christopher D. Gregory
In this timely and important work, an international group of leading investigators takes a close and critical look at programmed cell death and its role in the development, function, and maintenance of the immune system. Along with covering the primary actions of apoptosis, the contributors probe its role in carcinogenesis and HIV-induced pathogenesis. By offering a broad range of views, Apoptosis and the Immune Response presents a current and complete picture of the various aspects and consequences of this phenomenon.
Apoptosis and the Immune Response begins with the theories surrounding apoptosis and then covers its basic mechanisms including the morphologic, biochemical, and genetic features. The book offers authoritative discussions on the role of apoptosis in the deletion of self-reactive lymphocytes, prevention of autoimmunity, termination of the immune response, death of T cells infected by the HIV virus, neoplasia, and the homeostatic regulation of the hematopoietic system.
In particular, this excellent reference critiques such topics as:
With its diverse expertise and timely, clear-cut insights, Apoptosis and the Immune Response will prove to be an invaluable resource for immunologists, cell and developmental biologists, hematologists, and oncologists—as well as graduate students.

Apoptosis in Health and Disease (New Horizons in Therpeutics : Smithkline Beecham Pharmaceuticals U.S. Research Symposia Series)
Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9058230864 |
Book Description
The impact of Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is thought to play a crucial role in the development and progression of disease. Whilst Apoptosis remains extensively studied in the context of immunology, the focus of research has greatly expanded to investigate the key role it is now believed to play in hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, inflammation and organ remodelling. It is hoped that, with an increase in our understanding of the mechanisms controlling apoptosis, there will come the development of a new class of drugs which can pharmacologically manipulate apoptosis and thus provide a means to treat important diseases which currently pose problems to our society. Containing papers presented at the Eleventh SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals United States Research Symposium and with contributions from leading researchers, Apoptosis in Health and Disease offers a comprehensive review of important developments and research in the field.

Protective and Pathological Immune Responses in the CNS (Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 354042668X |
Book Description
In spite of the protection of the CNS there are situations where immune responses occur due to different disease processes. While antigen-specific cells of the adaptive immune response are not normally functional in the CNS tissue, CNS resident cells respond to infection or insult. One mechanisms is through the induction of apoptosis in virus infected neurons, which may be protective or pathogenic depending on the extent of cell death.

Viral Proteins Counteracting Host Defenses
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540432612 |
Book Description
Since the first observations of viral interference with antigen presentation in the MHC class-I pathway, the field has advanced to a detailed analysis. We know numerous genes and for some of them we have profound information on their mechanistic function. The antigen presentation pathway is affected at all stages starting from proteasomal degradation of an antigenic viral protein, as shown for EBV, transfer of the proteasomal cleavage products as peptides in the ER by specific transporters, the loading of the nascent MHC class-I molecule, and finally the transport of the complex to the surface and presentation in a normal or deranged form. All these different steps of the MHC class-I antigen presentation pathway are targets for viral proteins. Not only MHC class-I but also MHC class-II proteins are a target of viral influence either by direct downregulation and degradation of proteins or by interference of signal transduction pathways.
