Cost Management, Problem Solving Guide: Measuring, Monitoring, and Motivating Performance
Leslie G. Eldenburg , and Susan K. Wolcott Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0471655651 |
Book Description
Cost Management" was written in response to changes in the global business environment. Unbridled access to information and intense competition has meant that cost accounting has become an increasingly important tool for managers and accountants alike. Most textbooks focus on content knowledge and then expect students to 'magically' demonstrate skills such as decision-making and critical thinking. "Cost Management" better prepares students for professional success by bridging the gaps between Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. Many students fail to recognize the assumptions, limitations, behavioral implications and qualitative factors that influence managerial decision-making. The dynamic, new author team focuses on cost accounting methods, techniques and the quality of cost accounting information used for decision-making to deliver a thoroughly modern treatment of cost accounting topics.

The Common Agricultural Policy beyond the MacSharry Reform
C. Folmer , Michiel A. Keyzer , M.D. Merbis , H. J. J. Stolwijk , and P. J. Veenendaal Manufacturer: Elsevier Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 044481972X |
Book Description
The reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) which is now being implemented, reduces the support for a selected number of agricultural products. This book uses welfare theory and applied general equilibrium analysis to assess the medium to long term consequences of this reform, if the new policies remain in place until the beginning of the next century. It analyses the implications of two alternative scenarios: a) a further trade liberalisation covering all commodities; and b) increased protectionism with high prices, constraints on production and export subsidies (financed by the farmers themselves). The study also investigates the implications of financial renationalisation, whereby the European Union member-states would cover the costs of their own support measures.

Current Problems of Hydrogeology in Urban Areas, Urban Agglomerates and Industrial Centres (Nato Science Series: IV: Earth and Environmental Sciences)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402006004 |
Book Description
Groundwater issues have generated worldwide concern in recent decades. The problems are numerous: too little groundwater, too much groundwater, groundwater contaminated by either saline water or a broad spectrum of industrial and domestic pollutants. Many urban groundwater problems are not unique to any one region, which is the thinking behind this book. Many of the case studies presented here have never before been described in English. Overall, the papers represent the work and experience of researchers and groundwater professionals who have worked on urban groundwater issues in developed and less-developed nations around the world. They reveal the magnitude and scope of the problem as well as identify future challenges, potential courses of action, and emerging technologies that offer hope for the future.

Desert Regions: Population, Migration and Environment
Manufacturer: Springer-Verlag Telos ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540657800 |
Book Description
The book addresses three distinctive aspects of desert development: regional planning, urban environment and building. It summarizes the results of 20 years of research carried out by the Center for Desert Architecture and Urban Planning at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. In contrast to other books on desert development, the book considers physical development of desert regions not as an end in itself, but rather as an essential precondition for creating socially attractive and desirable environments for human settlement. Desert Regions consists of three parts, each of which considers different conceptual levels of desert development: I Regional Development and Population Change; II Cities of Cold and Hot Deserts; III Building and Design. In addition to the Israeli experience, the book includes research and design from other countries (Russia, Egypt, India, Mexico) which face acute problems of regional development in climatically extreme areas.

Critical Phenomena in Liquid Crystals: A special issue of the journal Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals (Molecular Crystals & Liquid Crystals Incorporating Nonlinear Optics)
M. A. Anisimov Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 2881242685 |
Book Description
Phase transitions and critical phenomena in liquids and liquid crystals have been the subject of intensive research since the 1960s. However, books on this fascinating subject have tended to be written by theorists for theorists. Professor Anisimov offers us a new approach: he aims to introduce experimentalists to the modern theories and their applications. After introducing the thermodynamics of phase transitions, he presents the modern theory of critical phenomena. He then concludes by illustrating the utility of this theory in the analysis of experimental measurements in classical fluids and binary mixtures, superfluid mixtures of helium isotopes and liquid crystals. Not only will this book be enjoyed by experimental physicists, chemists and material scientists, it will also offer the theorist an insight into the interpretation of the experimentalist's work.

Run Catch Kiss: A Gratifying Novel
Amy Sohn Manufacturer: Amazon Remainders Account ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: B000ENBPAM |

Amy Sohn lives in New York, where she writes a raunchy column for the New York Press called "Female Trouble." Her first novel features a young woman named Ariel Steiner, who lives in New York and writes a raunchy column called "Run Catch Kiss" for City Week. Any other similarities between author and creation are, no doubt, purely accidental. We first meet Ariel the summer after her graduation from college when she returns to the city, ready to resume the acting career she had as a child. Unfortunately, college not only enlarged Ariel's mind--it had a broadening effect on her body as well. "I can't send you out for any ingenue parts until you lose fifteen pounds," her agent tells her. Ariel is sure this won't take long and indulges in an optimistic fantasy about the fame and fortune that will soon come her way once she's lost the weight--an appearance in a George C. Wolfe production; a walk-on in a George Clooney film; an Oscar-winning performance in a Woody Allen movie, complete with requisite Oscar fantasy: "I'd bring my father as my date, and when Jack Palance opened the envelope and announced me as the winner, I'd run up to the stage in a strapless Chanel and they'd cut to a shot of my dad drowning in a sea of his own mucus." But until the day when Ariel Steiner becomes the third part of a Hollywood girl-triumvirate comprised of herself, Gwyneth, and Winona, a girl's got to eat; and so begins a ribaldly picaresque journey from actress wannabe to infamous New York sex columnist--"the Hester Prynne of downtown."Run Catch Kiss is a novel that will appeal to a very specific audience--fans of Amy Sohn; young college graduates who'd like to imagine it's really this easy to achieve notoriety in a city like New York; and readers who enjoy lots of name-dropping, club-hopping, and frank descriptions of sex and other bodily functions. Sohn includes several of Ariel's columns ("Stench of a Woman," for example, or "Smutlife") as well as the letters she gets in response. In between, Ariel and her cronies and assorted one-night stands hang out in places with names like BarF and BarBarella, and drop pop references to Gen-X movies and music. Sohn delivers it all up with moxie, making up for the novel's literary weaknesses by sheer full-frontal outrageousness. --Alix Wilber
Book Description
"I was only twenty-two and already I was infamous..." So begins Amy Sohn's hilarious and wise debut novel, Run Catch Kiss.
When the saucy Ariel Steiner returns home to New York City to be an actress, she is buoyed by daydreams of becoming Hollywood's hottest ingenue. Nothing can stand in her way -- nothing, that is, but her freshman-fifteen pounds, a senile talent agent, and the fact that she's living back home with her parents in Brooklyn.
While waiting for the ever-elusive big break, Ariel discovers a hidden talent for channeling her erotic fantasies and becomes a sex columnist at New York's hottest downtown weekly. Soon, art and life are imitating one another, and the junkies, commitmentphobes, and other subjects of Ariel's columns are wreaking havoc on her life. But when she finally falls in love, the real Ariel must stand up. Is she a nice Jewish girl who wants to settle down or a brazen sex kitten who'd rather meet a deadline than the man of her dreams?
Sharp, savvy, and irresistible, Run Catch Kiss is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on that dangerous turn-of-the-century phenomenon: the single girl who wants it all.

Where the two part company is Ariel Steiner's ineptitude. Satisfying her editors with bawdy details of her life, she barely disguises the names of her dates and becomes quite infamous very quickly, resulting in the loss of potentially good propects for fear of having their lives revealed in print, and the attraction of those who would do anything for the exposure.
What kept me reading was Sohn's wickedly funny phrasings. I find it difficult to describe them--you just have to see 'em to believe 'em. She finds a way to take a mundane event and recast it in its snappiest, most humorous light. The book screams for a sequal, and I, for one, hope Sohn delivers.
