Customer Reviews:
Easy to read and funny, but too basic.......2007-09-26
The book is well written and easy to read. The jokes were also welcome, especially when debt is involved. However, the advice was too basic and I learned nothing new. If you're a complete novice to the idea of budgeting and saving money, then this book would be helpful. I know the basic ideas, so I found it pretty useless. In addition, since the book was published in 2001, most websites recommended don't exist anymore or don't provide the same services. (and there are much better alternative sites available now). Given that a big portion of the book is dedicated to sites that can save money, this is a major drawback.
the first useful financial book I ever read.......2007-09-18
I ready this book in my 20's and it began my spath to financial solvency. It gave practical advice for someone making an "entry-level" salary and also helped familiarize myself with some of the more complex terms and concepts I would be faced with later. Plus it was easy to read. I did not make it to being debt-free at 30, but I had a good reason. The advice in the book helped me to be in a place financially where I could quit my job and go to graduate school at 30.
A great resource.......2005-11-09
If every 20-30 something knew the contents of this book, we'd all be in better financial shape. I had no idea that getting out of debt could be so completely demystified and so manageable.
Use it, and tell your friends about it.......2005-08-10
It's now been over a year since I read and successfully use the tips offered in "Debt-free by 30". And yes, I did pay off huge debts using this method.
This book is not about the "Latte Factor" but possesses the question, "Do you even know what the heck you're doing with the money you make?"
If you approach this book with the mindset of "I can't do that because...I don't have enough money or it won't work for me," then look somewhere else.
But if you are seeking true-to-life financial advice that you probably didn't get in college and you surely won't get anywhere else unless you actively seek it out, read "Debt-free by 30".
I used this book and made some simple Excel charts to show me where my money is and what I'm doing with it, and what I'm capable of doing with it.
Personal financing is just like running a business. If you don't have the bear facts in front of you on paper, you're only guessing and dreaming about your finances. Moreover, you could be disillusioned by your assumed inability to get out of dept by 30 simply because you have not laid out all the facts in front of yourself.
Putting the numbers on paper is a powerful step to moving out of debt. I recommended this book to my closest friend and I recommend it to you as well.
Debt free by 30.......2005-07-26
This did give very practical advice. It gives you some references that are helpful for the future.

Book Description
Financial Sector Policy and the Poor is part of the World Bank Working Paper series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank's ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion.
This paper presents new empirical evidence on how financial sector policy can help the poor. It is often thought that promotion of specialized microfinance institutions is the best or only way forward. However, a strong mainstream financial system is also pro-poorperhaps even more so. While mainstream financial depth is measurably associated with lower poverty, for microfinance this is not yet so. The roles played by microfinance and mainstream finance in tackling poverty should be regarded as complementary and overlapping rather than as competing alternatives. The essential similarities between the two will become more evident as individual microfinance firms, or associations of firms, grow to the scale needed for sustainability.
Policy design that recognizes the need for larger and stronger microfinance institutions poses no threat to the health of mainstream finance. Such a policy would not impose low interest rate ceilings; nevertheless, the goal of protecting the vulnerable from credit market abuses and prejudice should not be neglected in an effective package of policies favorable to the growth of both micro and mainstream finance.

From Apology to Utopia: The Structure of International Legal Argument
ASIN: 0199244936 |
Book Description
The end of the Cold War has brought a new form of world disorder. The systems and strategies imposed by the global balance of power of the Cold War have evaporated. The international system is seeking a new equilibrium between global integration and global disintegration. Natural forces of economic and cultural integration are opposed by equal and opposite forces of national and cultural particularism, and by the conflicts flowing from gross inequalities and injustices of social and economic order. New threats to international public order have been added to centuries-old forms of international conflict. Our national societies have always had systems of ideas and ideals to help us to co-operate as effectively as possible for our survival and prospering. The international system has never had a greater need for a philosophy of society and law to explain and to guide the co-existence and co-operation of all human beings, as inhabitants of a habitat which we all must share. Eunomia - New Order for a New World is an attempt to provide such a universal philosophy of society and law. It is a philosophy of social idealism, in which all human beings and all human societies might find a means of taking power, through the power of ideas, over the overwhelming complexity and energy of the new world in which we find ourselves - a world full of danger and full of hope. This paperback edition contains a new analysis of the state of that world and new proposals for the practical application of a philosophy of social idealism.

Description:
Donepezil is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor used in Alzheimer's disease therapy. The neuroprotective effect of donepezil has been demonstrated in a number of different models of neurodegeneration including beta-amyloid toxicity. Since the mechanisms of neurodegeneration involve the activation of both Ca^2^+- and K^+-channels, the study of donepezil action on voltage-gated ionic currents looked advisable. In the present study, the action of donepezil on voltage-gated Ca^2^+- and K^+-channels was investigated on isolated neurons of the edible snail (Helix pomatia) using the two-microelectrodes voltage-clamp technique. Donepezil rapidly and reversibly inhibited voltage activated Ca^2^+-current (I"C"a) (IC"5"0=7.9 @mM) and three types of high threshold K^+-current: Ca^2^+-dependent K^+-current (I"C) (IC"5"0=6.4 @mM), delayed rectifier K^+-current (I"D"R) (IC"5"0=8.0 @mM) and fast transient K^+-current (I"A"d"e"p"o"l) (IC"5"0=9.1 @mM). The drug caused a dual effect on low-threshold fast transient K^+-current (I"A), potentiating it at low (5 @mM) concentration, but inhibiting at higher (7 @mM and above) concentration. Donepezil also caused a significant hyperpolarizing shift of the voltage-current relationship of I"C"a (but not of any type of K^+-current). Results suggest the possible contribution of the blocking effect of donepezil on the voltage-gated Ca^2^+- and K^+-channels to the neuroprotective effect of the drug.

Book Description
Scale has long been a fundamental concept in geography. Its importance is emphasised in geographical information science (GIScience) where the computational domain necessitates the rigorous definition and handling of scale. Geographical information systems are now used in almost every walk of life, but scale is often handled poorly in such systems. Modelling Scale in Geographical Information Science is written by an international team of contributors drawn from both industry and academia, and considers models and methods of scaling spatial data in both human and physical systems.
Divided into three sections to give a balanced coverage of the key problems, tools and models associated with scale:
-
Fractal Models
-
The Modifiable Areal Unit Problem
-
Changing the Scale of Measurement
This book is an essential read for all GIScience researchers, advanced students and practitioners who want to delve more deeply into the scale issues of the spatial data and spatial models that form the basis of their analyses.

Book Description
Chaos, that is irregular dynamical behaviour, is ubiquituous in nature and occurs in a wide range of systems including lasers, fluids, etc., heart beats and brain waves. Before 1990 the emergence of chaos in a system was mostly considered as a nuisance because chaotic systems are hard to predict due to their sensitivity to small perturbations. After 1990 it became clear that this sensitive dependence offers the unique possibility to control these systems with a minimum of additional energy.
This handbook provides a comprehensive up-to-date overview of the field. It starts with an introduction to chaos theory, and covers all known methods of chaos control from parametric feedback to neuronal networks. A large part of the handbook is devoted to applications which range from control of electronic circuits, the control of lasers and chemical plants up to "antichaos control" in biological systems which offers the possibility to avoid epileptic seizures.

Controlling a Chaotic System.......2004-01-11
A few years ago, researchers studying chaos came to a realisation that it might be possible to apply some elements of control systems onto it, taking advantage of the intrinsic chaotic nature to minimise the amount of energy input needed.
In essence, researchers were trying to take the paradigm of a butterfly flapping its wings and affecting a cyclone an ocean away, and use it. The book seems to have a well chosen summary of such research intents, applied across various fields. Progress has been good; though currently no headline grabbers.
While it does provide a quick introduction to chaos theory at the start of the book, you might need prior acquaintance. It is not the aim of the book to teach you chaos theory but to apply it.

The first story is a little shaky, but the other is a different story..........2007-07-10
Let me say first of all, please do not judge this series by the first book in this 2 part collection. The Myth novels are truly great, witty, light hearted, and entertaining. They are truly enjoyable to read. One of the best things in the series was the amazing cast of characters that added so well to the author's humours and spoofs. With this being said, for the sake of your enjoyment, start with the 2 books in 1 feature of the Myth series, Another Fine Myth/Myth Conceptions.
M.Y.T.H Inc Link
***
The book starts off solid and takes a little different of a turn from the rest of the series. In truth it is a collection of short stories cleverly weaved together, like in the sense of some of Ray Bradbury's short story collection(but not so masterful, creepy, or deep) and is told from the view points of various members of the crew. This is interesting, and gives a deeper look into the people we've come to know and love, but its the last part of the book that makes this book a pebble in a collection of diamonds. The author here tries to go into how the stress of running the buisness, and this has shocking changed the lovable, caring person we have come to love and is known as Skeeve. Now this is a side of Skeeve that is painful to see, and there are some dull passages relating to this side of him.
Myth-Nomers and Impervections
*****
A wonderful spoof on metropolis areas like New York, this tale is much truer to the greatness that is the Myth series. Funny and entertaining, this book you're going to enjoy.
With this being said, buy the whole series, and then judge it. Don't be surprised when you find yourself reading it again soon after you finished it though.
Major shift in direction.......2006-04-13
The Myth series of books chronicle the adventures of an apprentice mage called Skeeve and his mentor who is a Pervect called Aahz. In the six books up till this point, the plot lines were pretty straightforward and the characters developed slowly while there were lots of laughs and impossible situations. This was and is a great fun series to read when you are looking for mindless, trivial, and funny reading material.
The series started changing with the previous book and this compendium of two volumes continues the change. There is an author;s introduction in which he describes what he is trying to achieve with the books and clueing us in about the difference between a Myth book (focuses on Skeeve) and the M.Y.T.H. books (focus on the other characters). Throughout the next set of books, the author is planning on having his characters develop and grow - so he says.
The first book "M.Y.T.H. Inc. Link" is actually a collection of short stories in which we see different situations from the point of view of the various characters that have attached themselves to Skeeve. So, for instance, we learn that Tananda's temper has been known the get the best of her, with rather disasterous results. We also see Guido in a new role as a union organizer(?) and find out that Gleep is significantly more intelligent than we suspected until now. While the storylines hew to he original charter of the Myth series and are entertainingly written in different styles to showcase the talents of each of the other characters, the whole concept does not work out too well. The sections of text that attempt to tie everything together are just not that good and the end result for me was the feeling of a random collection of stories.
In the second book Skeeve deals with the apparent dissatisfaction of Aahz that causes Aahz to return to Perv. The first two thirds of the book are great and are a wonderful throwback to what makes this series so much fun to read. Manhattan is Perv and the slight exaggerations between the NYC reality and the Perv model only make it funnier (at one point in the story, Skeeve is stopped by the police because he is not rude enough!).
Unfortunately, in the last third of the book, the author turns the story into an analytical exercize in Skeeve's growing up as a person. There are lots of achingly dull passages dealing with Skeeve's feelings and his analysis of what and why things have changed in the relations between him and his friends. We are introduced to Aahz's mother and a cousin, but these are very small and unimportant and appear as merely decorations to the interminable self-ruminations. I kept wondering if there was a strong autobiographical element in this section of the book. I know that the author suffered through some difficult personal times and it probably bled through his writing.
I hope the future books moved away from this format as a continuation of these types of books will severely degrade the series.
A chuckle and then some.......2006-03-21
I like these books. They might not be my favorites in the series but I still think the stories are pretty good.
****
In M.Y.T.H. Inc Link, the crew split up to take on different assignments. Aspirin changes his writing style to match the 'tudes of the different characters. This gives you a better understanding of their inner workings.
*** 1/2
Myth-Nomers and Im-Prervections reminds me so much of New York(which the RA intended) . . . . but what's not to love about New York. To say the least, I puts a smile on my face.
A Good Series Jumps the Shark.......2005-11-12
I'd like to present the Myth Adventures books from my perspective. When I started reading them, they were still fairly new -- only the first three books had been published. I read and enjoyed these, and waited eagerly for the next book to come out. These books revolved around the mis-adventures (mis-adventures/myth adventures, get it???) of a would be wizard named Skeeve, and his mentor/cohort a green demon named Aahz. They were cute, they were fun, I'd reccomend the early books, especially to younger readers just getting a taste for fantasy novels.
At the time, Robert Asprin didn't disappoint, he was producing Myth Adventures books with great regularity for many years. Then, suddenly, "M.Y.T.H. Inc. Link" came out, which he described in the introduction as a kind of transitional book. From this point on, what he said that he wanted to do was alternate between writing books which would be essentially collections of short stories told from the persepctives of various members of the supporting cast (the "M.Y.T.H. Inc." books), and the traditional Myth Adventures books told from the perspective of Skeeve.
I may have been young and naive at the time but what this said to me was "I have run out of ideas. Please look at this book of short stories while I stall for time with my publisher."
I suppose that "M.Y.T.H. Inc. Link" wasn't that bad a book, it just feels very forced when compared with his earlier stuff. I looked forward to him getting back on track with his next book. The next book was entitled "Myth-nomers and Im-Pervections" (I still don't quite get the title). Not only did it feel just as forced as the other book, it was incredibly dull and tedious. The plot was way too drawn out -- kind of reaffirming my whole "Out of Ideas" theory.
These books were not as bad as the series was going to get (I reviewed the next two books in the series as well), but they were still pretty darn bad. I reccomend that you stop reading this series with "Little Myth Marker".

Book Description
As president of M.Y.T.H. Inc., Skeeve is in charge of a myth-chievous gang that includes a pet dragon and an artistic vampire. However, is it just luck (of the bad variety) or deliberate myth-directions that have Skeeve and his gang sleuthing around some very out-of-the-way (and dangerous) dimensions?

Other Books.......2007-09-03
Other tales in turn.In the seventh Myth book, various and sundry of the other characters in the series get to play point of view, here, of which the best just might be Gleep the dragon, although Guido's is good, too." INEVITABLY, WHEN CONVERSING WITH my colleagues of the dragon set, and the subject of pets was raised, an argument would ensue as to the relative advantages and disadvantages of humans as pets. Traditionally, I have maintained a respectful silence during such sessions, being the youngest member in attendance and therefore obligated to learn from my elders. This should not, however, be taken as an indication that I lack opinions on the subject. I have numerous well-developed theories, which is the main reason I welcomed the chance to test them by acquiring a subject as young and yet as well-traveled as Skeeve was when I first encountered him. As my oration unfolds, you will note...but I'm getting ahead of myself. First things first is the order of business for organized and well-mannered organisms. I am the entity you have come to know in these volumes as..."
Beleive it or not - it's a project management book.......2006-02-09
If you ever read any of PMP-prep texts, you'll know right away that this book is nothing but a set of PM cases, fantasy genre notwithstanding.
Enjoy RLA classics from a somewhat unusual perspective!
Different but still great........2001-12-14
I agree with Minh Dang (the first reviewer of this book). This book gives insight into the minds and personalities of all the characters involved. I think Asprin really had to change something or risk becoming repetitive or stagnate (he pretty much says so in his introduction). He tried something new and I enjoyed it, although at a different level. This book didn't have as many laugh-out-loud moments, but it has a bit more plot than normal and since it's the beginning of a 5 book contract he was able to start some multiple/cross book subplots.
Not as good as the previous Myth Adventures.......1999-10-25
This book was good, but it hold par with the previous six. While there is more character development on Chumley, Massha, Guido, and Gleep, I liked Skeeve's narration better.
Aspirin combines fantasy and humor for a great read!.......1998-10-08
Skeeve, the struggling magician, isn't your ordinary story hero. He makes mistakes and has friends there to laugh at and help him. The humor is what makes the book a hit. Without it, it would merely be another dull fantasy involving devils, trolls, and dragons. Full of laughs.
