This volume is intended to provide a survey of thought about exchange-rate determination as it emerged in the decade of the 1970s. This survey differs from many, however, in that the field itself is in a state of rapid change. Understanding the changes and the reasons for them is therefore essential if the reader is to have a basis for understanding future advances in knowledge and the further evolution of the system. The survey is also intended to reach non-specialist professional economists whose balance-of-payments theory was learned before the 1970s, as well as to provide graduate students and advanced undergraduates with an up-to-date account of the field. In most respects, the theory of exchange-rate determination is based upon an analytical structure equivalent to that analyzing the determinants of the balance of payments under fixed exchange rates. The difference is that the shifts in excess demand for foreign exchange lead to quantity adjustments under fixed rates and price adjustment under flexible rates. Thus, attention turns first to exchange-rate, or balance-of-payments, determination. Thereafter formal analyses of differences and similarities between the functioning of the alternative systems are considered, reflecting the focus of the profession and the mainstream of research of this period.

It's the greatest book about Exchage Rate (ER) Determination, Krueger wrote an excellent classical book. This is a survey about the principal theories about the determination of ER, it's very easy to understand and important consults item.

I got this book and a copy of another book by Michael Rosenberg "Exchange Rate Determination". The contents of these two books is exactly the same. Same topics covered in both books. I made the mistake of purchsing both when I should have only bought Exchange Rate Determination which is priced more decently than the out-of-print version. These used book resellers are selling the Currency forecasting book at a non-sense exorbitant price.

This is a great book! Rosenberg has succeeded in making a dry and complicated topic, foreign exchange, both interesting and understandable. The chapter on intervention is especially timely and enlightening. Rosenberg is rated tops in his field by professional fx traders and portfolio managers, yet he has succeeded in writing a book that is both useful and interesting to both professionals and nonprofessionals. This is a must read for anyone involved in international markets.

Pete Clark and Steve Neill have written an excellent book on value creation, covering the subject from the viewpoint of each of the major sources of corporate value. My special interest is R&D and innovation, and I find their chapter on why internal development is both mandatory and unaffordable to be an extremely perceptive insight into a major value trap. Equally valuable is their fine psychological profile of CEO's who try to manage R&D by "managing the R&D manager". Clark and Neill know that "The corporation with a reasonably predictable innovation stream controls its destiny." This book is eminently readable, lively, and quite well-documented.

This book really stands head and shoulders above other books on value creation.
The emphasis in The Value Mandate is on ACTIONS to improve shareholder value rather than merely a regurgitation of well known measurement techniques.
The book is a must read for anyone who wants to take practical measures to improve the performance of their company. I now not only understand the maths of value, I know how to do something about it!

Sand dune dynamics plays a key role in many arid deserts. This volume provides a synthesis of a specific sand dune ecosystem, the Nizzana site in the Negev Desert. The global significance of the world’s rangelands is large, with these arid and semi-arid systems making up almost 25% of the earth’s landscapes – and supporting the livelihoods of more than 20 million people. These ecosystems are also home to several of the planet’s remaining megafauna, as well as other important species. Yet fragmentation across these rangelands has significantly impaired the ability of both people and animals to compensate for temporal heterogeneity in vegetation and water by exploiting its spatial heterogeneity, resulting in limited resource availability.
The case is developed that while fragmentation arises from different natural, social and economic conditions worldwide it creates similar outcomes for human and natural systems. With information from nine sites around the world the authors examine how fragmentation occurs, the patterns that result, and the consequences of fragmentation for ecosystems and the people who depend on them. The book will provide a valuable reference for students and researchers in rangeland ecology, park and natural resource management, environmental and ecological anthropology, economics and agriculture.

Cultivation, overgrazing, and overharvesting are seriously degrading forest and grassland ecosystems in the Taurus Mountains of the southern Mediterranean region of Turkey. This study investigated the effects of changes on soil organic carbon (SOC) content and other physical soil properties over a 12-year period in three adjacent ecosystems in a Mediterranean plateau. The ecosystems were cropland (converted from grasslands in 1990), open forest, and grassland. Soil samples from two depths, 0-10 and 10-20cm, were collected for chemical and physical analyses at each of cropland, open forest, and grassland ecosystems. SOC pools at the 0-20cm depth of cropland, forest, and grassland ecosystems were estimated at 32,636, 56,480, and 57,317kgha^-^1, respectively. Conversion of grassland into cropland during the 12-year period increased the bulk density by 10.5% and soil erodibility by 46.2%; it decreased SOM by 48.8%, SOC content by 43%, available water capacity (AWC) by 30.5%, and total porosity by 9.1% for the 0-20cm soil depth (p
<0.001). The correlation matrix revealed that SOC content was positively correlated with AWC, total porosity, mean weight diameter (MWD), forest, and grassland, and negatively with bulk density, pH, soil erodibility factor, and cropland. The multiple regression (MLR) models indicated that any two of the three ecosystems and one of the two soil depths accounted for 86.5% of variation in mean SOC values ((p

The process of desertification in the Otindag sandy land has increased dramatically over the past several decades. While there has been an increase in research on recent changes, little is known about the historical vegetation cover, the soils and the past biogeographical patterns, which are important for understanding the desertification causes and for effective desertification control. This research explores two relevant issues: (1) what are the major causes for ecosystem change and desertification; and (2) what are the implications for developing management policies, including those related to engineering projects. For these purposes, a meta-process model is developed to simulate several key parameters of plant community, including foliage projective cover (FPC) and net primary production (NPP). Their dynamics over the past 40 years are analysed. It is found that if only climate is considered, the simulated NPP and FPC of vegetation community show an increasing trend, although the increase is not statistically significant. This indicates that climate may not be the key cause for desertification in this area. Instead, socio-economic factors should be mainly responsible for such changes, as is confirmed by our further analysis. Two measurements are proposed for sustainable environment management: development and maintenance of suitable vegetation coverage of at least 46.7% and implementing a reasonable sheep stocking of 1.5 per hectare, respectively.

We examined the relationship between the distribution of Martial Eagles Polemaetus bellicosus (and other large eagle species) breeding on electricity transmission pylons in the central and southwestern Karoo, South Africa, and the general environmental health of commercially managed farmland in that region. Eighty-three eagle territories were located along 1400km of surveyed pylon line. The influence of habitat quality on eagle distributions was assessed in terms of (i) patterns of dispersion and spacing between territories, (ii) macro-scale differences between the habitat composition of eagle territories and an equivalent array of random plots, and (iii) micro-scale differences in habitat quality assessed at points within and outside of eagle territories. Territories were generally irregularly distributed along the pylon line (p
<0.025). At the landscape scale, Martial Eagles significantly favoured habitats with lower and/or less predictable winter rainfall and lower primary productivity, while Tawny Eagles Aquila rapax preferred habitats with higher and/or more predictable summer rainfall and higher primary productivity. All eagles avoided areas of highest primary productivity and were absent from cultivated areas. On a local scale, habitat qualities within eagle territories were generally not significantly different to those recorded outside territories. However, eagle densities in areas stocked with indigenous game were significantly higher than in areas supporting only domestic stock (nearest neighbour distances, 7km vs. 12km, p=0.025). This study shows that (i) large eagle distributions in the Karoo are significantly influenced by both macro- and micro-scale variation in habitat quality, and by the nature of land management, and (ii) that the Martial Eagle is potentially suitable as an indicator of ecosystem quality and functionality in the Karoo.

The CENTURY model was used to simulate changes in total system carbon resulting from land-use history (1850-2000), and impacts of climatic changes and improved land-use management practices in Senegal. Results show that 0.477Gtons of carbon have been lost from 1850 to 2000. Improved management practices have the potential of increasing carbon levels by 0.116Gtons from 2000 to 2100. Potential to store carbon exists for improved forest management and agriculture practices in southern Senegal. Potential climatic changes decrease plant production (30 percent), total system carbon (14 percent), and the potential to store carbon from improved management practices (31 percent).

I was up all night reading this book (I'm a slow reader). Pamela Ribon is a great writer who speaks my language ("for reals") without sounding cheesy. Her book is fun, escapism without being insulting to my intelligence. If you like this book then you should check out her website at pamie.com - her real life is even better than any of the books she's written (so far).

I read as an escape from reality. Not that my life is bad, but it is fun to get a look in to others as well. This book was hilarious (sp?) . I was reeled in from the first page. I am anxiosly awaiting Pamela Ribons next boook!

I loved this book! Belinda "Benny" Bernstein lives in Los Angeles, far from her mother and sister who live across the country. She gets calls from her mother and they always have the craziest of conversations. Here's an example: Her mother would call and tell Benny "I have chlamydia". I was laughing out loud from the very first page, and with lines like that, it's hard not to. Benny's nickname is "boobs", and little details like that just made the story funnier.
Belinda finds out after the fact that her sister and mother were in a car accident, and now her mother can't drive until her broken leg heals. Her mother has also lost her job. So, Belinda decides to move back home to help her mother and sister out (her sister also happens to be living at home with mother).
Living at home is not easy, and when Belinda sees the house, she cannot believe her eyes. It's a wreck. Not only is the house falling apart but it's filled with so much junk there is no room to move. It's not any cleaner outside, either, as the yard is filled with animals. Belinda is resolved to fix her family's living situation by hiring someone to help out around the house, doing whatever is necessary to get the place livable. This is how Belinda meets Zack, a very good looking young man that Belinda thinks has the hots for her, and vice versa. But she's also left behind a nearly - brand new boyfriend (they have no commitments to each other, but she still feels tied to him), Mickey, who she met in a very unconventional way - at the grocery store during a conversation about the music being broadcast on the grocery store speakers).
So, she's got a man at home in Los Angeles that she is thinking about, but she also can't stop thinking about Zack. In the meantime, her mother who seems to behave like a very liberated (sexually) woman is juggling several boyfriends at once, and only one is aware of the other men involved with her. And Benny's sister Jami is always attracting trouble. Benny feels it's her duty to take care of the two of them, to fix things, and her helpful attempts do not bring on feelings of gratitude from Jami or their mother.
While cleaning up the house, Benny encounters some letters that were boxed away, and they hint at a past that she does not approve of, involving her mother and one of the current boyfriends, Gregory. It sets off a series of events that eventually leads to the climatic ending to the story.
WHY MOMS ARE WEIRD was a very funny, lighthearted look at a very dysfunctional family. But there are serious themes that go along with the Chick-lit-like tone, making this novel much more complex than your average chick book. I haven't read the previous book WHY GIRLS ARE WEIRD but I will definitely read it now. Pamela Ribon writes with a funny and witty style which I found refreshing. I may even put this book on my list of top books read in 2006.
Delicious sexual tension.......2006-11-11
Pam Ribon writes sexual tension better than I've ever seen it written. The Benny-and-Zack relationship was extremely absorbing and lent a great diversion from the chaos in which Benny finds herself living. Do give this skillfully crafted novel a read; if you liked "Why Girls Are Weird" you're going to love this one.

This book is terrific. It is very different from Why Girls Are Weird (which I also enjoyed), but not in a bad way at all.
