The Bible for Environmental Financial Reporting.......2006-06-09
Before I read Greg Rogers book, I thought accountants were mere number crunchers and that the lion's share of the crunching would eventually be performed by a sophisticated software package-- or at least people in India. The happy truth (for accountants, anyway,) is that accounting is an inherently SUBJECTIVE (and, therefore, not highly-outsourcable discipline.) A less happy (and somewhat scary) truth is that I actually found Rogers' treatment of accounting fascinating. Yes, it may be that I need to get a life, but this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to excel in the environmental industry.
As a testament to the readability of the book, I will share a short anecdote. In preparation for a presentation that I was to give at a large accounting firm in New Jersey on behalf of my environmental consulting company(Hydrotechnology Consultants, Inc.), I asked my assistant to order Rogers' book on Amazon. She unwittingly requested shipping via media mail (a.k.a. snail mail.) As the date for the seminar approached, she assured me that the book was scheduled to arrive "any day." It was two days before the seminar and the book had apparently taken a detour to media mail hell. I told her that she needed to secure the book for me by the next day or invest in a warm hat and a pair of gloves-- because it tends to get rather cold in the unemployment line. In desperation, she called Greg Rogers and begged him to ship the book overnight. Greg took pity on her plight and shipped the book for morning delivery-- leaving me exactly one day to read the book, digest its contents and regurgitate it to an audience of accountants. To make a long story short, the presentation went off without a hitch. The accountants were highly impressed with my knowledge of environmental accounting, but seemed somewhat uncomfortable with my level of enthusiasm. Therefore, I offer this advice to Greg Rogers: place a label on the book cover which reads, "Caution: Contents May Shock and Awe!"
Must Buy for Environmental Lawyers.......2006-01-30
I have been an environmental lawyer for over 20 years and say without hestitation that this is the best single volume book on SEC and Environmental Disclosure that I have ever read. Other books explain how accounting principles operate but Greg Rogers not only easily dissects these complex concepts in a way that is easily understandable to lawyers without any financial or accounting background but also illustrates their application to environmental issues. You will feel like an expert after reading this book.

This books pulls together brilliantly the complexities of the multi-disciplinary challenges of reporting environmental liabilities after Sarbanes-Oxley and FIN 47.
All other books and papers I read are focused on one angle of the topic, looking at environmental liabilities in just one dimension. This book saves hours of study and research, all work is done for the reader. Quick read, logically structured.

To remain competitive in customer-oriented economics, the major parties in the supply chain should be integrated and managed effectively to respond to customer needs. Thus, the efficiency of the entire supply chain is a main concern, and is determined by the members of that supply chain. Partner selection thus becomes one of the key steps in supply chain construction. Given buyer-supplier information asymmetry, obtaining complete information from suppliers is difficult, since some supplier attributes cannot be definitely and quantitatively measured. This study establishes a suppliers capability and price analysis chart (SCPAC) focused on the case where the specification limits are symmetric about the target for evaluating supplier performance which applies the process incapability index C"p"p introduced by Greenwich and Jahr-Schaffrath (International Journal of Quality & Reliability Management 12 (1995) 58) to measure supplier quality performance and the price index I"p is proposed here to display the difference between budget and component price. Practitioners can instantly and visually obtain information based on the locations of suppliers and price indices on SCPAC. SCPAC also provides clear directions for quality improvement, such as process accuracy and precision. SCPAC thus is an effective and efficient method for evaluating suppliers, which can simplify supplier evaluation, facilitate their effective visual selection, and provide insights into the process situation of suppliers who can become technological innovation partners.

Too often, when America speaks of race, it is in black and white terms. Dialogue surrounding race seems always to position whiteness as the center around which all other colors revolve. Meanwhile relations between minorities are largely ignored, surfacing in our consciousness only when tensions flare, as in the case of Black-Korean violence in Los Angeles.
In our life times, Whites will no longer constitute a majority in America. As a result, Black/Brown relations—and the need for this relationship to be fruitful and mutually supportive—take on an even greater urgency. Yet, this relationship has been troubled, characterized too often by a misguided sense of competitiveness, hostility, and even violence, as evidenced by the Miami race riots of the 1980s.
In this brief, accessible, impassioned volume, Bill Piatt surveys Black/Brown relations in their entirety, devoting chapters to such issues as competition in a shrinking labor market, the re-segregation of our public schools, the language barrier, gang warfare, and voting coalitions. Reviewing similarities and differences between the Black and Brown experience in America, Bill Piatt emphasizes the need for solidarity and mutual understanding and offers explicit proposals for greater racial harmony. Blacks and Browns must get along not only for their sake, he argues, but for a stronger, more stable America.

Excellent topic, but only half the picture is covered!.......2001-07-12
Bill Platt details and analyzes the tensions between Black Americans and Latinos. He covers a range of controversies from Miami, to New York, to Los Angeles. He argues why the two minority groups need to get along better. I have two major problems with this text. First, it overlooks the many instances in which blacks and browns get along quite well. I am an African-American and I think that the majority of us would say that we get along better with Latinos than we do with whites or Asians. Particularly in this age, many minority programs have to be split between blacks and Latinos (thus the proliferation of made-up words like "Af-Lat", "Blatino", "Blackano", etc.), thus forcing the two groups to see eye to eye. Further, I think the book is written in a simplistic style that borders on insulting the reader. I love the topic, but I was a little disappointed by the book.

Statistical Models for Nuclear Decay: From Evaporation to Vaporization describes statistical models that are applied to the decay of atomic nuclei, emphasizing highly excited nuclei usually produced using heavy ion collisions. The first two chapters present essential introductions to statistical mechanics and nuclear physics, followed by a description of the historical developments, beginning with the application of the Bohr hypothesis by Weisskopf in 1937. This chapter covers fusion, fission, and the Hauser-Festbach theory. The next chapter applies the Hauser-Festbach theory using Monte Carlo methods and presents important experimental results. Subsequent chapters discuss nuclear decay at high excitation energies, including the theories and experimental results for sequential binary division, multifragmentation, and vaporization. Juxtaposition Rank: Utter Despair in the Semi-Literate P.M........2006-05-28
A puzzled demeanor paves the road towards less-than-ebullient dissatisfaction. I don't care if the reader of this review spends his/her money on DVD collections of "Desperate Housewives", "Grey's Anatomy" or "Joey"--the lot shall be cast into the foul breath with mechanical precision when the red bulb becomes illuminated--but I must protest the curiousity flittering around Mike Ashley's compilations. This collection isn't appropriately creative to be deemed as absurd. I'm an eccentric fellow who cannot condone a bowl of cereal unless the contents of the bowl are a mixture of disparate palates, so I can appreciate a guffaw (why not?? lately, the comparisons being proclaimed by the spawn of pacers balancing my outrageously, outlandish supervillainous hyena exhalation and the trademarked sociopathic titter of Batman's #1 [self-proclaimed] foe have begged examination). However, this book belongs in the dungheap. Perhaps my meager scope of comprehension prohibits me from a total self-elucidation of the rationale behind publishing such a pestiferous tooth-stainer of literature, but I shall rest comfortably knowing that the book shall be fettered to the shelves collecting not accolades, but DUST.
By the by, homewreckers, scroll down my list of reviews and you shall acknowledge that less than a year ago another Mike Ashley compilation was criticized very favorably. Yes...obviously, the missing piece of this diabolical sphinx shall be enshrouded eternally...
Giggles and guffaws.......2000-05-12
I love comic fantasy, so was looking forward to this collection very much. I was *not* disappointed! From 'Neander-tale' (why not to make fun of the weird guy) to 'The Outpost Undiscovered By Tourists' (a new twist on the three kings), you'll enjoy yourself tremendously. Good for many hours of grins and giggles...
