Best Practical Risk Management Book Ever! .......2006-05-24
Allen's book is absolutely phenomenal. Most of the risk management books out there are too technical to be of any practical use. Allen truly focuses on the practice of risk management and gives us insights on how to be a truly good risk manager. Traders could benefit from his insights as well. I particularly liked his breakdown of linear vs. non-linear risks, and liquid vs. non-liquid positions. In terms of the practical risk management of options (vanilla and exotics) I haven't seen anything this clear and this comprehensive. The accompanying CD is an absolute blessing in order to fully understand the concepts like price vol matrices, etc. This should be a required additional reading for all students in financial mathematics/MBA programs around the world! Well Done Mr. Allen!!
Smart, Savvy, Practical.......2003-11-14
Allen delivers the most insightful look at market risk management for dealers since the Group of 30 Report. While other books are taking on an increasingly bureaucratic tone when it comes to risk management, Allen is refreshingly proactive. I really like the treatment of valuation reserves. His discussion of managing spot, forward and options risks bridges the gap between what a trader is thinking and what a risk manager should be thinking. This isn't a book for the sort of risk manager who hasn't been on the trading floor in a few months. It is a tactical book for the pro who works shoulder to shoulder with quants, traders and salespeople. Note that the book is qualitative. For the quantitative side of all this, see Holton's landmark "Value-at-Risk".
An Excellent book on risk management.......2003-06-18
This is a must buy book for both kinds of people: students or people in academia and practitioners who want to understand different type of risk they face at a macro or micro level. The reasons I like this book on risk management better than thousand others already out there are following. I like to describe this book as having two sections, both the sections are very important and people can focus on either depending on what they are looking for. The first part of the book provides a very good understanding of the risks faced by managers, for example risk managers, head of a trading portolfio or a desk or even CEOs. Very often these people face risk which are hard to quantify or even understand and are not often talked about. The author draws from personal experience and provides interesting case studies,. which makes this part of the book a pleasure to read. I learnt about model risk, reputation risk and other such risks which typically a junior person on a trading desk is not exposed to. So this understanding is very valuable in order to communicate with your boss or to get more insights about risks that management may care about.
The Second part of the book focusses on risk management of different type of instruments, instruments range from plain vanilla to complex path dependent options. It spans through assets classes as well. As promised by the author, the level of mathematical and quantitative background required is kept to the minimum. The text provides intuition about what market variables or market moves a specific instruments depends on rather than complex formulae to price such instruments. For somebody like me, who has a little more mathematical background than an average reader, the text points to latest research or specific papers that I can explore if I want to flex my quantitative muscle.
The book is full of very interesting exercises and case studies, which are truly practical. This is something which is completely different from many texts that I have seen on this topic.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to anybody who has anything to do with trading financial instruments.

Ecclesiastes 2:1.......2003-02-15
In addition to having read this book, I have had the priviledge of being one of Dr. Abadinski's students.
Abadinski is not a professor that reads directly from the book, in fact he seldom opens it. As he talks on, you can almost follow word for word what is written in the book.
The book gives an excellent overview of the Judicial system. It covers the history of law and courts, gives a great description of types of legal systems in America and Europe, and has a great chapter on law schools. Some of Abadinski's experiences in the New York and Illinois court systems are apparent including the selection of judges in New York and his own dealing with the ACLU when he tried to publish a paper about the NY probation/parole department that would have resulted in an unfair termination.
I think that this is an excellent book for any criminal justice student, or anyone interested in the justice system in general. I entered his class as someone interested in attending a local law school in hopes of becomming a public defender. Afterwords, however, I have learned how utterly useless the justice system is. The figures show how less than %3 of cases ever go to trial.
Dr. Abadinski holds his Ph.D. from New York university as well as an MSW from Fordham university. He is a former parole officer.

Not a sleeping pill.......2005-08-11
Burnhams book on U.S. law and its legal system is great for anyone who wants to learn or study U.S. law. It is comprehensive in that it provides the basics on the most important parts of substantive and procedural law. For foreign law students and jurists in particular it gives a well written and very understandable introduction into U.S. law. Professor Burnham seems to intentionally adress "foreigners" in certain sections explaining the similarities, but also the existing differences between the common law system and the civil law system (as he defines the central European legal system). This makes many topics easier to understand for outsiders. The in depth explanation of the adversary system and its implications for some U.S. particularities is also valuable, as are the guidelines for legal reserch.
Buy this book for starting to learn U.S. law or as a reference book. I grab it now and then just because it actually offers good and informative reading.
(This review is based on the First Edition of the book)
Comprehensive!.......1999-12-14
I have used the Burnham book for five years in my Introduction to American Law class of foreign LL.M students. This is the only book I have found that gives such a comprehensive introduction to American law. It provides an excellent survey. It is at once complete enough to use alone for a course, and at the same time useful as a foundation for special exploration of specific areas of interest.
Review of Intro to the Law and Legal System of the US 1999.......1999-12-14
I have recommended this book to every one of my colleagues who has taught the American legal system course in our London programe. When I heard of the publication of the second edition, I immediately asked my West representative to favor me with a desk copy. The task of finding materials suitable for lawyers pursuing a comparative master's degree at Notre Dame bedeviled me for several years. Almost every introductory text on the American legal system seemed to offer a basic understanding of American history in general and Constitutional history in particular. Books that treated fundamentals of the adversary system, or that described the legal profession or the judicial system, often contained little if any exposition of substantive areas of the law. Materials that described substantive legal areas often anticipated an understanding of the institutional regime that applied the law. The day Burnham's Introduction to the Law and Legal System of the United States crossed my desk was bright indeed. As I scanned the table of contents, I was struck at how it tracked the syllabus of the course I was preparing to teach. Its coverage of legal institutions was complete in five chapters. The basics of criminal and civil procedure were available, and eight additional chapters, each treating a legal subject area, were offered. Professor Burnham imaginatively arranged the material to facilitate coverage via a survey or in much greater depth responding to the background of the students or the amount of time available for the course. The book has now been used on several occasions. The students and I have found it to be a strong asset in learning about the American legal system. The book also serves as a marvelous inexpensive resource for foreign students to carry home with them.

Book Description
Divided into two parts, this work begins with preliminary comments regarding the definition of ``surface phases'' and briefly describes the basics of two-dimensional crystallography, including background information about the formation and characterization of surface phases on silicon. The second half is devoted to the particular ``adsorbate/Si'' systems. Contains data on 300 plus surface structures formed on clean Si(111), Si(100) and Si(110) surfaces in the presence of foreign atoms at submonolayer coverages as well as without adsorbates at all. 64 adsorbates are reviewed along with preparation techniques of surface phases, models of their atomic structure and a description of surface properties and surface-related phenomena.

New York City and America's car culture smash together in Calvin Trillin's Tepper Isn't Going Out, a humorous tale of the urban quest for an open parking space. When a mailing-list broker, Murray Tepper, decides to spend his days plugging meters so he can sit in his car reading newspapers and waive off suitors hopeful of gaining his spot, little does he know that his odd behavior (even by New York standards) will set off a media buzz, provide him with cult-hero status, and incur reproach from the paranoid, dour Mayor Frank Ducavelli, who focuses on curtailing Tepper's "abuse" of the parking meter system.
Granted, the plot of this novel is quite thin, but, while not leaving you in stitches, Trillin provokes many smirks and smiles with his wit. For instance, he writes of magazines titled Beautiful Spot: A Magazine of Parking and the potential of Spin: The Magazine of Salad Drying. When Tepper suggests that his friend Jack leave his car's flashers on while parked illegally, Jack responds:
And draw attention to myself? Not a chance. I always park in front of hydrants. The secret is to park smack in front of them rather than just too near them. You have to go all the way. If you're smack in front of them, the cop rolling down the street can't see that there's a hydrant there at all. You have to be brazen. That's my motto, in parking and in life: be brazen.
Trillin's book should appeal to commuters and city dwellers everywhere, and anyone else looking for a chuckle. --Michael Ferch
Book Description
Murray Tepper would say that he is an ordinary New Yorker who is simply trying to read the newspaper in peace. But he reads while sitting behind the wheel of his parked car, and his car always seems to be in a particularly desirable parking spot. Not surprisingly, he is regularly interrupted by drivers who want to know if he is going out.
Tepper isn’t going out. Why not? His explanations tend to be rather literal—the indisputable fact, for instance, that he has twenty minutes left on the meter.
But once New Yorkers become aware of Tepper, some of them begin to suspect that he knows something they don’t. And an ever-increasing number of them are willing to line up for the opportunity to sit in his car with him and find out what it is.
Tepper Isn’t Going Out is a wise and witty story of an ordinary man who, perhaps innocently, changes the world around him.

Tepper's behavior sometimes irritates the people who want his spot. ("Is that where you live? Is that car rent-controlled?") It also irritates the mayor -- Frank Ducavelli, known in tabloid headlines as Il Duce -- who sees Murray Tepper as a harbinger of what His Honor always calls "the forces of disorder."
But once New Yorkers become aware of Tepper, some of them begin to suspect that he knows something they don't know. And an ever-increasing number of them are willing to line up for the opportunity to sit in his car with him and find out.
Tepper Isn't Going Out is a wise and witty story of an ordinary man who, perhaps innocently, changes the world around him.
Customer Reviews:
Amusing big city satire.......2006-11-12
When someone knows the minutiae of parking laws, times and places, and wants to get the absolute most out of time on the meter, they are definitly from the big city and probably from New York City. To those of us that travel there, it is a confusing set of signposts that may often result in an encounter with NYC Parking Po-lice. To Murray Tepper, it is a well known, well marked (mostly) and well travelled map.
Tepper Isn't Going Out is amusing satire, laugh out loud in a few places. Great characterizations (other than Murray himself, the mayor, the pollster, and many of the people on the street) and a plot that borders on ridiculousness while still taking bits and pieces from today's newspaper headlines.
Highly recommended, would make a nice read for a long plane ride or weekend vacation.
I give Tepper the green light...........2006-09-11
Anne Rice has written great novels about immortal vampires. Tom Clancy tells tales of supper powers embroiled in global struggles shaping the political structure of the modern world. In this book, Calvin Trillin writes about a guy in his car. Please don't misinterpret this as implying any kind of road trip anything; the car doesn't actually move. This is Trillin's great `guy sitting in a parked car novel' and is a great satirical look at life in the big city.
Tepper Isn't Going Out: A Novel.......2006-08-06
Very funny, New York centric though my not appeal to the heartland.
A MODERN JAMES JOYCE ULYSSES FOR BLASE NEW YORKERS.......2006-07-13
the ever deadpan Trillin does a great if incomplete job of bringing LEopold Bloom from the Liffey to the East River. Leopold Bloom is enormously generous and concerned for others. Greater love has no man than this, to lay down his wife for his friend, let own his newspaper, etc. But Tepper won't even give another driver his rare parking space. Despite the rationalization that his random grunts administer divine wisdom for hurt souls, Tepper is really just another selfish and self-centered New YOrk slob who'd rather give you the finger than the time of day.
Still a funny if deceivingly simple story of the Gogol type.
I laughed alot.......2005-12-08
A great satire on life in a big US city. Trillin captures the frustration associated with battling life's daily problems; and the obvious incapacity of the politicians who try to make it all work. The parking thing is a clever metaphor.
I moved out long ago. A few days visit to such a place is more than enough. Give me small town America every time.
