Intense Reading.......2007-09-09

I am using this textbook for a MBA course and I just had to stop studying and write a review. The authors must have collectively agreed to make this the most confusing read possible. For every one definition, there are two to three words that can mean the same thing, and they are interchangeably used throughout the text; after several chapters, it is very difficult to remember which term matches with which definition. Besides that, the text book was written for people who ALREADY know all the terms associated with this field. They can take a simple subject and convolute it with jargon that the average user will not understand. The writing style used is VERY technical; instead of writing simple sentences that are clear/easily understood, it appears as though they used every word in the thesaurus. I spend more time in the index and glossary than I do reading the text itself. Why couldn't they have written it more intelligently? A good text book explains itself as it goes and does not jump off the high dive into the deep end of the pool. If you are a Finance Major, this is the book for you, for the rest, I would keep looking. I'm off to wade through the rest of this book and look forward to the last page; will it ever come?

I use this textbook for my Financial Markets class and I learn so much from it. Fabozzi does a wonderful job of transfering his ideas to students so they can comprehend them and learn. Because of this book, I will definately get an 'A' in my class. I recommend this book to anybody.

Damaged Package.......2006-09-19

Well for one Im still a lil upset that i paid 116.20(Textbook and workbook) and the textbook wasnt even a hardback! What the hell! This next thing is probably UPS's fault but the box my order came in was crushed to all hell one one side. The books were ok for the most part but I wasnt to please when i opend my door and saw that beat up box.
Im ok with the workbook being a paperback but I think for the price the textbook should be a hardback.

Public Policy at its finest.......2006-12-20

There are several good books in this series on public policy but this is among my favorites. It reminds public policy makers that they are spending other people's money and encourages baking reform from our regulatory statues. It is a condemnation of congress at points for over spending and really delves into how our banking system has emerged. I highly recommend this book for those interested in bank regulation, public policy or economics. Very well written and really will make you think about the issues.

The basic purpose of this book is to describe the relative value of each method of improving various agricultural crops by using parasexual techniques. While no book can be a complete source of all the information on a subject, a range of topics were selected to highlight the recent developments in mutagenesis (conventional approach and molecular biology) and in vitro induced variation in plant breeding. We have deliberately kept short the title of this book, simply emphasizing somaclonal variation and induced mutation. This book is divided into three sections. Section 1 contains 13 chapters mainly on somaclonal variation (SCV), covering SCV in crop improvement, SCV in ornamentals, cereals and forage grasses, banana, and forest trees, cytogenetic basis of SCV, in vitro selection, gametoclonal variation, protoclonal variation, and solanaceous medicinal plants. Section 2 deals with induced mutation, and is covered in 10 chapters mainly on mutagenesis in sugarcane, fruit trees, apomixsis, ornamental plants, disease resistance, cereals and legumes, and vegetatively propagated plants. Section 3 describes the molecular aspects of mutagenesis and somaclonal variation, insertional mutagenesis (T-DNA mutagenesis, transposons), and molecular methods for identifying somaclonal variation, RAPD markers in banana somaclones, and transgene expression.

Hydronamics of Explosion presents the research results for the problems of underwater explosions and contains a detailed analysis of the structure and the parameters of the wave fields generated by explosions of cord and spiral charges, a description of the formation mechanisms for a wide range of cumulative flows at underwater explosions near the free surface, and the relevant mathematical models. Shock-wave transformation in bubbly liquids, shock-wave amplification due to collision and focusing, and the formation of bubble detonation waves in reactive bubbly liquids are studied in detail. Particular emphasis is placed on the investigation of wave processes in cavitating liquids, which incorporates the concepts of the strength of real liquids containing natural microinhomogeneities, the relaxation of tensile stress, and the cavitation fracture of a liquid as the inversion of its two-phase state under impulsive (explosive) loading. The problems are classed among essentially nonlinear processes that occur under shock loading of liquids and may be of interest to researchers in physical acoustics, mechanics of multiphase media, shock-wave processes in condensed media, explosive hydroacoustics, and cumulation.

The Rules of Domestic Bliss.......2006-02-21

If you are contemplating the clearing away of housemate complexity, Henderson's House Rules offers a guide to domestic bliss. Leaving this around the house is sure to tempt anyone into reading "the rules" of the living-in-the-same-house game.

The humor in this book is especially enjoyable, occasionally subtle and at other times brilliant. The solutions for everyday challenges could be as simple as a division of labor or pet training. Of course, many of the items will either make you laugh or cause you to consider how your life could be improved with a few simple adaptations of behavior.

If only life was perfect, my husband would let me run the dishwasher while he was watching TV after dinner, he would never ever leave clothes by the bed and I would never leave dishes in the sink to soak. My theory on the matter is that whatever doesn't annoy us doesn't need to be changed.

I like the rule about cleaning the kitchen: "Clean as soon as possible after cooking unless there is a valid reason not to." Valid reasons are also included but could be expanded to include things like: taking a bubble bath. Sometimes I'm too tired to do all the dishes after dinner and have much more energy in the morning.

Some of the highly entertaining issues include:

Henderson's House Rules will be very useful for roommates or for couples who want to share house duties. As someone who alternates between leaving the house in total chaos and complete obsessive cleaning, this book shows the way to balance.

A brilliant book for anyone who lives with anyone else........2005-05-31

Who would have thought that a book would make you re-think such mundane tasks as washing the dishes? This book broaches all kinds of domestic issues, including things you never would have thought about but suddenly seem vital to good domestic order. The style is frank and no-nonsense to the point of being hilarious. The book makes for great bathroom reading, which is appropriate because it will teach you a thing or two about how to maintain that room.
Although it seems to be marketed to newlyweds, the books is perfect for just about anyone: kids leaving the nest for the first time, couples who have been married for 30 years, and even people who live alone.
I don't usually go for overly cute how-to books, but Henderson's House Rules seems to be the exception to that genre. It is without a doubt the most thoroughly useful gift/stocking stuffer type of book I have ever seen.
