Wordy and confusing.......2006-05-02

The author uses a lot of wordy language to make simple concepts complicated. Also I agree with another review: there is a lot of macroeconomics. I think Dr. Shapiro needs to understand how his readers learn, not how he can enjoy his writing.

Can be confusing, major focus on economics.......1999-06-11

This textbook may not be a good choice for undergraduate students or for someone who does not have an intermediate or higher knowledge of finance. Wording in the chapters and in the end of chapter problems can be confusing. Statements are made and then not backed up with supporting information. The book spends a large amount of time on a macroeconomic view.

Excellent book........1999-06-11

We adopted this book during the first semester of 1999 with excellent results. Our students were delighted with the practical approach, and the breadth of its contents. Recently our country has been through a monetary turmoil, and the book served very much to explain the policies that our local central bank authorities have been pursuing.

Comprehensive, up-to-date and authoritative, this volume covers all the recent advances in understanding the early events of neural development at the molecular and cellular levels. The authors detail the applications of molecular genetic methods to the study of neural induction, neuronal phenotypes and processes, and the formation of specific patterns of connections. They analyze the new information generated through modern techniques for identifying, cloning, deleting and introducing specific genes, for labeling neuronal or glial precursors, and for imaging individual neurons or parts of neurons. Other chapters focus on the increasing use of a variety of model organisms: fruit flies, nematode worms, zebra fish, xenopus frogs, chicks, and mice. The improved conservation of DNA and protein sequences, and the availability of gene and protein databases have made it possible to rapidly identify gene homologues in organisms sometimes separated by hundreds of millions of years of evolution. This volume features several chapters co-authored by investigators one of whom works on vertebrates and the other on invertebrates. They demonstrate clearly that although the nervous systems of a fruit fly and a mouse, for example, are quite different in appearance and organization, many of the same molecular players and cellular processes are involved in their assembly. This is not a textbook for students but an excellent series of reviews by top level scientists in the neural development domain. Very detailed information on the subject with a good parallel between drosophila and vertebrate studies. An absolute requirement in the lab.

Not a good text for learning neural development.......2000-04-20

I was unfortunate enough to take a class on neural development where this text was our primary text. The book is written in the format of what appears to be journal articles, or reviews by various authors on the different subjects. It is not written in textbook style. Furthermore, in this manner of writing, the book does not provide enough background information on the subjects that it covers. It automatically assumes that the reader fully understands the subjects that it is intending to teach. I do not recommend this as a primary text for a class. It would serve a wonderful job as a supplement for a class or to provide someone knowledgable in developmental neuroscience a "refresher" or update on what is currently known in this subject. However, I do not feel that it should be used to TEACH developmental neuroscience.

Many little tid-bits were clarified with this book. It is packed fully of useful and trivial information, that it is sure to facinate even the non-meteorologically inclined person. I for one never could figure out how some mountain trees looked the way the do but after reading #588 it all made sense to me.

Entertaining and informative.......2007-09-04

Written by two sisters who, themselves, are voracious Harry Potter fans, the book contains detailed insights into the origins of the mysterious names of the characters in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. As a special treat, this book also contains numerous illustrations that are so good, they might possibly warrant having their own book.

This book is not for you if you are over the age of 8.
I was expecting a serious discussion on the meanings of names, something clearly important in Harry Potter. Mostly, I got character descriptions, things I already knew from reading the books.

When I first heard about this book, I was excited. I mean, a book that discussed the meanings of the names of the characters! However, this was before I found out it was put together by a high school and middle school sister team. I have to say, they didn't do a lot of research. For the most part their research could consist of them looking up the names in baby name books of some of the main characters from the books and telling the reader what they mean. Then, using several lines from the Harry Potter books as evidence they state how the name defines the character. Each character gets about a paragraph's worth of discussion and even then, about half of it are quotes from the books. The only redeeming quality for this book are the pictures of the characters drawn by Benjamin Vincent. They are quite good.

So I would not recommend this book to anyone who hopes to gain a deeper meaning of the Harry Potter characters and their names, it's just a waste of money. This book should really only be purchased by someone who is an absolute die-hard Harry Potter fan and wants to have everything and anything Harry Potter related.

Another tasty morsel for Potter fans.......2007-01-22

For voracious fans of the Harry Potter series, ANYTHING that offers morsels on everyone's favorite boy wizard is a plus. You will not be disappointed here. Not only does "Friends and Foes of Harry Potter" feature the unconditional perspective of some of J.K. Rowling's biggest fans, but it does so from the midst of her demographic, as well. Authors Nikita & Chitra Agarwal were in the fifth and tenth grades, respectively, when they penned this exciting expose into the enchanted world of Hogwarts. Their investigative spirit is infectious.

Not to be outdone, illustrator Benjamin Vincent offers some truly breathtaking original artwork, featuring key characters and locations from the Harry Potter series. The artwork alone is worth the price, as the cover demonstrates. Potter pals, pounce promptly!
