Practical Advice on Investing Hits the Mark.......2003-08-11

Vern Hayden, CFP, is a frequent guest on CNBC. Unlike most guests he consistently provides useful down-to-earth advice to viewers. He has come to the realization that blind buy-and-hold investing is no longer a valid approach. He now believes "that radical market fluctuations sometimes demand radical action...there are not only times when you shouldn't buy and hold funds, but also times when you'll need to adjust your allocation." It's refreshing to hear the "truth" about buy and hold from an investment professional rather than get the party line from the always-bullish Wall Street crowd.

Hayden's book, his first, hits the nail on the head and clearly delineates a ten-step investing plan, each of which is explained in a separate chapter. His ten principles include:
- Don't Lose Your Principal
- Set Your Own Benchmark
- Buy and Watch Your Portfolio
- Have an Investing Defense and Offense
- Consider Risk And Return
- Keep Learning
- Avoid Sector Funds
- Track Your Performance
- Be a Professional or Get One

He methodically leads the reader through the key steps needed to become a successful investor. Hayden supplements his advice with appropriate exhibits to emphasis his key points.

In conclusion, Hayden has written a comprehensive, step-by-step investing approach that can greatly benefit serious investors - if they not only read his book but also actually do what he says. Over the past 40 years I've read over 500 books on investing, and this one makes my "top 10" list for its practical advice. I urge you to read this book and benefit from the wisdom of a "true" Wall Street" professional.

A good primer.......2003-05-11

This is a good book for learning both do it yourself asset allocation and for setting reasonable goals for one's portfolio. Hayden stresses knowing your risk tolerance first rather than looking for returns first. As Will Rogers said: "I'm more concerned with the return of my money than the return on my money."

More than fantasies.......2002-03-01

Although this book looks like one of those self-gratifying fantasies at first sight, it actually offers much much more than those watered-down stock market tales like "Wall Street" and "The Boiler Room". The reader is taken through the career of a City professional from his humble beginning to the near height of his life. The tales told about the inner workings of brokerage firms are gripping and sharp. The turn of events seems somewhat convenient, one cannot help but has the idea that the main point about writing this book is not about satisfying fantasies, but to reveal the true nature of the stock market and how it affects those who are dumb enough to play it blindly. This book reveals rare information that one will not find in any other self-help investment book. Read it wisely and carefully, but only after you have some fundamental understanding of the stock market. The insights you gain in reading this book will take you through a rollercoaster of ideas. In the end, you will find yourself coming to a conclusion that is much the same as you have suspected: Stock market is all about playing the game.

Contains thirteen national reports and the general report on Money Laundering and Banking Secrecy. The reports were written for the XIVth Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law which was held in 1994 in Athens, Greece. As narcotics trafficking exploded in the 1980s, it was realized that money laundering had become a threat to the entire integrity of the financial system. The international trend to regard money laundering as a serious threat to the stability of democracy and the rule of law found expression in the adoption of the 1988 United Nations Drugs Convention. Gradually, the international community diverged from its traditional, narrow approach whereby only the laundering of drug proceeds was considered a threat. In order to combat money laundering efficiently, it soon became clear that criminal law was not sufficient and that it was necessary for banks and other financial institutions to co-operate with law enforcement agencies. The banking community is now obliged to report suspicious transactions, which they often regard as going beyond their role as bankers. The issue of bank secrecy has played an important role in the discussion between law enforcement agencies and the banking community. Both the Council of Europe Convention on Laundering Search, Seizure and Confiscation of the Proceeds from Crime and the UN Drugs Convention require that bank secrecy should not be an obstacle to international co-operation. At the national level the seizure of bank records should not be hindered by bank secrecy.

Good to read if you want to know........1998-01-09

Thorn in the Starfish is a great book to read if you are interested in finding out about how the immune system works. It is unlike other Desowitz books by explaining how a system works, rather than presenting information in a fun to read manner. It still includes the fun stories about how different aspects of the immune system were discovered.

The book does a remarkable job at explaining the immune system to people with some knowledge, and for people with no knowledge of how it works beforehand. He runs through the different types of cells, what they do and how they work with each other. He covers what you want to know about the immune system so that you know what happens when you get sick. However, if you have a deeper understanding of immunology, if maybe best if you find a good textbook, because this book covers most of the basic information, that one wants to know, and does not go too deep into the issues.

If you want to read this book just because it is by Robert Desowitz, be warned, that though it is a good book, it is not like the other books that he has written. It is still enjoyable but in an educational sort of way. Otherwise, it is well worth reading.
