Pro's Lessons On How To Trade Options.......2007-05-15

Dr. J. (Author) is a seasoned pro that wrote this book without hype and extremely rare examples of huge profits that very very few people normally make. Rather, he discusses both risk and reward. He seasons his book with a good amount of humor and insights into the life of a big-time trader that has survived decades at the top levels of the options business. If you don't read this book and do trade options - you're just foolish! I know a bit about it. I've held a Series 7 stock broker's license. And I learned a lot from this well written book!

Excellent book for anyone who wants to trade options or needs more info to help them get better if they are a trader. I would recommend this book to anyone who is in the stock market.

Don't join his online service .......2006-12-16

His site has a 10 minute video (greatly done) that talks about his new system called "Heat Seeker". It proposes to see when a LOT of activity is on a stock when someone (maybe insiders maybe floor people) buys a LOT of calls or puts. Then you buy them too and ride on their coat tails. It sounds logical.

So I joined because they had an unconditional guarantee. I asked first what was their "performance" for the year. They couldn't tell me, but it's on the site. So after I joined I see the buys and sells and they lost money for 2006.

But I followed some trades as the theory sounded good. Probably lost $1500 before I gave up, only one week. The kicker was TARO. This stock was pharmaceutical and was going to go up. In fact it went up 50% on the first day. If I can gotten the email alert earlier I would have got profits of 50%, but only 20% in one day. Who won't be happy?

But the next day lost half of my money. Seems as though TARO hadn't given the stock exchange a financial statement for TWO YEARS!

Wouldn't you think a options suggester would know that? I saw it posted the next day.

I did an analyst on the trades for the past 6 months. 2 out of 9 were profitable, but the whole year was a loss.

I don't know but after seeing MOST suggestions go up then down, I'd think maybe SOMEONE :-) suggest a buy, they buys first, the crowd then sends the stock soaring because everyone is buying and then the original person sells out for a profit-everyone else looses.

On 9/11 that's what happened with airline stocks. There was huge buying of puts on airlines a few days before (Jon Najarian mentioned this too in his video)the attack on the trade center.

I'm not saying changewave does this, but I'm through with these services that can't prove what they write about.

This is my experience for others to beware.

Intermediate to Advanced Book.......2004-08-19

If you already understand basic options, then this book will add the finishing touches to get to another profitable and consistent level. Ignore the bio and personal commentary and skip to methodology or "how too." There is substance to the work if you can read between the lines.

The main thesis is like poker there are "tells" as to when the stock will move and to what price. The market specialist or maker is unfettered in making a 2 sided market, so must hedge in the underlying stock or options markets. This explains the basis for the tell and has been DRJ's secret. Not a bad indicator as this explains the underlying movements.

Did you hear about when Amazon accidentally uncovered the identities of some of the reviewers and it was discovered that a lot of Authors were giving their own books numerous 5 stars reviews?This book in my opinion is a classical example of that,the book has no structure,no organisation.The author blows his trumpet a lot about his farcical NFL career (who cares).It is truly an awful book on options and I would be willing to give my copy away for free.I would give it 0 stars if Amazon would have given me that option,buyer beware.

An absolute riot - one of Hiaasen's best.......2007-04-22

From time to time I recommend Hiaasen's books to coworkers, friends, and family. A few have become fans like me, but others end up giving me the books back (looking a little uncomfortable as they do) and never look at me the same way again. These people stop asking for my advice on reading material.

Apparently, not everyone appreciates Hiaasen's unique brand of humour.

I've read all of Hiaasen's books and consider Striptease to be one of his best (Lucky You, Stormy Weather, and Sick Puppy are the others). Hiaasen turns his outrage (in this case directed at the sex trade, sugar cane producers, and corrupt politicians) into a hysterically bizarre novel about a stripper with a heart of gold caught in a custody battle with her drug addicted, wheelchair stealing, golf club wielding, sociopathic ex-husband. Her life gets even more complicated when it crosses paths with a kinky congressman whose staff will do whatever it takes to protect the conservative politician's image. As is the case in all of Hiaasen's novels, the body count rises until the guilty get what they deserve(a gruesome death, of course).

If you're looking for a nail biting suspense thriller, Striptease probably won't do it for you. Hiaasen may give readers a rollicking ride, but this wacky plot with its quirky characters won't satisfy anyone looking for a serious thriller. Striptease may not leave you breathless with white-knuckled thrills, but it's a great read if you like a healthy dose of twisted humour with your crime fiction.

I haven't seen the movie but I can't imagine that it's any good. Gallows humour that works on the written page doesn't always translate well onto the big screen. Don't let the movie stop you from reading the novel. Striptease is an absolute riot.

Clever and funny.......2007-04-02

This is on of the best books that Carl Hiaasen has writen. The story follows the adventures/efforts of a striper that tries to raise her child. Throw in the story a corrupt congressman, some psychos and and several opportunists and his wild humor and you have a book that is highly entertaining. Just to add in case you have seen the movie with Demi Moore, it was a poor adaptation of the book.

Great Storytelling and Loads of Laughs.......2007-01-19

After reading "Skinny Dip" I just had to go onto another of Carl Hiaasen's books. Like the previous reader, when I picked up "Strip Tease" I had no idea it was the same story as the Demi Moore movie. Never seeing the movie, I began the book and got totally involved with the storyline and the characters. What a crazy chain of events starting straight on with the very first page. The domino effect begins immediately with the aftermath of Paul Gruber's bachelor party at the strip club, the Eager Beaver. Seems Congressman David Dilbeck is quite the lady's man or at least he thinks he is and Ms. Erin Grant is the stripper of the year that he can't take his mind or his hands off of! Poor little Erin, just stripping to make money to gain custody of the daughter she lost to her drug addict ex-husband. She lost custody of her daughter because of her profession, a profession she had to go into because she lost her previous job w/the FBI as a result of her druggie, wheelchair-stealing husband. He in turn gained custody of little Angela after being busted by the police but then in turn, agreeing to becoming a snitch for them. This is just one of the scenarios of the crazy antics of this story. I thoroughly enjoyed not only the storylines but also the character development, good and bad guys alike. I found the basic premise of political as well as environmental corruption not as good as Skinny Dip, but definitely an attention-getter. I am very glad I did not see the movie because I hear from everyone who did see it that it was terrible. I would image had I seen the move first, I would have never read the book and many people would certainly feel the same way. Don't let the movie steer you away from this most enjoyable novel.

Made Me Forget The Movie.......2007-01-09

I find it fun to note that I was about 90% through this before a scene sparked a visual memory and I said "holy ****! This is that awful movie with Demi Moore!" I think that it's a tribute to either Hiaasen's writing or my failing recall that I found this book so engaging and enjoyable it took me that long to mentally link it with the terrible film it got made into.

Carnival Strippers.......2007-01-11

I remember the carnivals, but I was too young for the side-shows (some of them, anyway), and the book, with very good pictures, is an outstanding coverage of the genre. The book includes interviews with performers and patrons, to give you the flavor of the world you are reading about.

They strip to please, not to tease..........2006-09-16

Frankly this book is incredible. I'm a carnival performer and history buff and in my opinion it's always been a tragedy that carnivals of yesteryear are remembered now almost entirely for the sideshows. Rides, games, spook houses and sex were all part of the classic carnival allure; this book is dedicated to the latter and portrays the Girlshow at it's best and most real.

Most impressive to me was the fact the author says almost nothing of her own opinions or ideas regarding the girls, the talkers or the lifestyle. Instead the reader is simply treated to the text of her interviews and therefore only the ideas of the people who performed and in some cases the people that watched.

As performer I was especially pleased to read in it's entirety an original Girlshow "talk" or "bally" at the front of the book, and I love the unabashed and often casual photos taken back stage, all of witch give one an insiders sense of what it must have been like in the glory days.

Documentary photography at its best.......2005-04-07

As a small kid, I was always fascinated by the carnival strippers and the forbidden world behind the platform. Finally, these pictures outline what that world was like for those women who danced. No, the pictures aren't pretty, but realistic and honest. I came away from these pics with more respect for the kind of work that these ladies did. The world of the carnival stripper is gone, but these wonderful and gritty pictures allow us one more intimate look at an all but forgotten time period.

Carnival Strippers.......2003-10-28

"Carnival Strippers" is a photographic documentary of the carnival strip shows that flourished in county fairs in small-town New England through the late 1970s. The book consists of photographs of the strippers, the managers, callers, and barkers who run the shows, and their customers, or "marks".

The book first appeared in 1976 and his long been out-of-print. The photographer, Susan Meiselas, was at the time a young woman just out of graduate school. She spent the summers of 1972 -- 1975 following the carnivals and in getting to know the women to photograph them and their environs. She at first offered her photographs and interviews to various feminist publications who turned them down.

Meiselas subsequently went on to a distinguished career as a documentary photographer working extensively in Central America and Kurdistan. In 1992, Meiselas was named a MacArthur fellow.

"Carnival Strippers" received attention upon its initial publication for its frank, but nonjudgmental portrayal of its tawdry subject. The book was made into two plays before it, like the carnival strip shows themselves disappeared from attention. Then, in 2000, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City featured a retrospective of the photographs. The Whitney Museum published this second edition of "Carnival Strippers" in 2003 with Sylvia Wolf, curator of photography at the Museum contributing an essay. Deidre English of the Graduate School of Photojournalism at the University of California at Berkeley has also written an essay for the book.

In the 2003 edition, 16 new photographs are added from Meiselas's source materials and 13 photographs that appeared in the 1976 edition are deleted, making a total of 76 photographs in the book. The new edition is also rearranged from the initial text. There are two sections of photographs, the first called "the girl show" and the second called "portraits". The essays by Wolf and English draw parallels between Meiselas's work and the work of Brassi's 1930 photos of Paris prostitutes, as well as with the work of contemporary photographers such as Diane Arbus. To me the strongest parallel is Belloq's collection of photographs of prostitutes in Storyville, New Orleans dating from the turn of the century.

In the grainy black-and-white photographs of the life of the carnival strip shows, we meet the women and the barkers on the front stage called a "bally" enticing the men to enter the show. For a price of $2 or $3, the show consisted of four or five women each dancing naked to, generally, a single 45 rpm record. The book shows photos of the girls at work to crowds of leering men. The world of the "girl shows" was competitive and nasty.... We see the girls off-stage in dressing rooms and in private moments reflecting on their lives. There are extensive interviews with the strippers, the managers and barkers and the patrons. The book also comes with a CD featuring the sounds of the strip shows, interviews with the girls, and a 1997 interview with Susan Meiselas.

The book paints the picture of a low, tawdry life with mutual exploitation between the girls, their managers, and the patrons. Yet it is a way of life not without its fascination. It is a life of poor, mostly ignorant, and exploited women, but also a life based upon the rejection of convention and upon attempts to attain independence. Meiselas clearly became taken with the strippers, their attempt at independence, their eccentricities, their vulnerability, and their vulgarity. For Meiselas and her subjects, Carnival life is something that gets in the person, making it hard to leave when one has been exposed. I found the life of these now gone carnivals and girl shows got inside me as well in reading this book.

The women in this book are not beautiful, air-brushed models and the book has little to offer in the way of titillation. Meiselas tries to show the viewer and the reader the carnival life for what it was. The book shows a dark corner of the eternal theme of sexuality and love between men and women in all its difficulty and ambiguity....
