The author's background is a small town CPA, which may account for his no BS approach. Simple (not simplistic) straightforward solid advice for anyone wishing to start a financial advisory practice.

I'm have a CPA background and obtained my CFP several years ago, but never practiced financial planning, other than a brief foray working with an insurance company, which was an excercise in high pressure selling. Ugh! I wish I had this book back then!

A good book, except for the writing.......1999-12-06

Jim Ainsworth clearly demonstrates his extensive financial consulting experience throughout this book. Much of the information is valuable, and it covers the important beginners' range of knowledge effectively. However, his 'down to earth' style is not only irritating, it actually makes the book painful to read. Good written English is not always the same as good spoken English. Surely the man is a succesful financial consultant, but that doesn't make him a good writer. It just goes to show that in a hot, growing industry like financial consulting a book written by a 'qualified' author will sell even if it is poorly written.

It's a tort's casebook.......2007-07-28

This text covers all of the relevant legal issues that a typical 1L will encounter during a typical torts class. The text reading is quite dry and some of the case selections that are made will make you smash your head against the desk, all in all its not a bad text.

Recomend the emanuel outline which is tied to this text.

Okay but you'll also want some study aids.......2006-08-28

Case books have a difficult time getting respect, because they have to include the opinions written by the different judges for the different cases. So, you're dealing with many, many writers, and unfortunately, judges aren't known for their entertaining, flowery prose.

So, the "authors" of a casebook really only get to throw in a few tidbits about the relevant law in-between a lot of badly written, lengthy legalese. I'm betting that they're limited on how much they can write in-between the case opinions by their publishers.

That said, this is a pretty decent casebook. Buy it only if you have to. If you have access to Lexis/Nexis or WestLaw, etc., you can always just look up and read the cases online & save the cost of the textbook.

To really understand Torts, I suggest getting a study aid like Examples & Explanations, which I think is put out by Lexis press or the Professor Series by Gilberts. The Finals series are good, too.

Pretty Standard, Could Be Better.......2005-11-22

OK, it's a casebook. By definition it is just a bunch of cases thrown together to demonstrate various areas of the law. But lately there has been a new trend in books for 1Ls... analysis. Sure, this book has "Notes" sections between the cases, but they are little more than hypotheticals or one-line versions of even more cases. What about some essays? Talk about the logic behind the cases or maybe mix in some Law and Economics theory. As a generic casebook this is quite good, but adding a little more than just cases would be outstanding.

The old standard--but outdated.......2004-06-15

This book is still used a great deal in law schools, but there are better casebooks now with modern, more interesting cases and more thoughtful analysis. Instead, try Goldberg, Sebok and Zipursky, Tort Law: Responsibilities and Redress.

Description:
A new type of the fiber-optic microsensor for surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was created on the basis of the fabrication technology of optical fiber probes in near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM). The newly developed SPR microsensors were prepared by coating a gold-metallic film on the chemically etched single-mode fiber containing a conical core. They were applied to the real-time monitoring of the refractive index (RI) of transparent liquids flowing in the microfluidic device. When SPR microsensors were chemically modified with a self-assembled monolayer presenting a hydroxyl group, they successfully responded to the refractive index from 1.33 to 1.40 RI with a sensitivity of 0.008 RI units that covers the interesting regions for SPR biosensor operated in a water solution.

What a find!.......2007-07-16

I actually found this in a used bookshop but I thought I'd just add to the positive reviews of this book. I just read the book over the last 3 days and I am totally impressed and ready to recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I won't bother with description or analysis except to say that the structure of the book was fascinating to me, and the tone hilarious throughout. If the concept of the book (Satan as a computer in therapy) appeals to you at all, then I can almost guarantee that you'll love it.

I was fortunately turned onto this book from a fellow co-worker who knew that I liked strange and off-beat novels. This book did not disappoint me.

******Some Spoilers follow******

Jeremy Leven's Satan: His Psychotherapy and Cure by the Unfortunate Dr. Kassler, J.S.P.S. is narrated by the Prince of Lies himself.

The story mainly centers around Dr. Kassler's adult life, but occasionally and skillfully sidetracks into the lives and trials of several other very memorable characters throughout the book. Shortly into the story it is made clear that Satan has a brilliant physicist unknowingly build a machine that allows Satan to communicate with our world. For what purpose? Satan has fallen into a depression and needs psychotherapeutic treatment! Sure, he could visit Freud in Hell, but only Dr. Kassler J.S.P.S. [Just Some Poor Schmuck] will do.

I leave most of the story out because it really is a phenomenal one. Think Catch-22 meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest meets a bawdy science-fiction novel.

Simply put, this book is funny, enlightening, and a must-read for anyone who has a twisted sense of humor and a philosophical streak. The title's description of Dr. Kassler as "Unfortunate" is an understatement--throughout the novel, Leven puts Dr. Kassler through the Trials of Hell, and then some.

I hope the wordy title and religious undertones do not dissuade any readers from this book. Leven is a skilled writer and his jabs at the psychotheraputic community are brilliant.

This is one of my favorite books. Excellent character development, multiple plot lines, and lots of references to what one might find in a liberal education. A great read, but more importantly, allows you to look at existence, humanity, and the complicated interworkings of human relationships on a constant shift between a macro and micro scale. Get it, you won't be disappointed!

I deeply recommend this book to everyone who wants to find new ways of thinking.

Satan on the couch.......2005-08-27

Sy Kassler is a pathetic man. Hopelessly romantic, he marries a woman incapable of responding in kind. Pursuing his father's love and acceptance, he's rejected. And then he agrees to give Satan seven sessions of analysis. Things continue to go downhill from there. Leven's book is an interesting mixture of guilt, suffering and comedy, not entirely successfully blended together, but it does have its moments. Psychology and its many different disciplines takes a beating here as does the legal system and religion, but by taking on so many "sacred cows" Leven dilutes the message. So many scenes are so far over the top that it becomes hard to take anything seriously and there are enough deaths and lives destroyed that this hurts the book's tone. Kassler ends up being so useless that it is difficult to find sympathy for him, but the scenes where he is shown with his kids are truly moving. The ending is the most disappointing part of the journey where elements of horror are introduced that seem out of place as if the there was nowhere else to go, and revelations about some of the characters seem forced. Despite these flaws, SATAN does raise a variety of intriguing ideas and is worth a look.
