Only a small percentage of those who try day trading achieve success because most are undercapitalized, lack discipline, and have little idea how much knowledge and experience are required. For the determined newcomer, David S. Nassar's How to Get Started in Electronic Day Trading Home Study Course is a comprehensive immersion that includes a well-written workbook, 10 hours' worth of audiocassettes, and a CD-ROM. Nassar, author of the book How to Get Started in Electronic Day Trading, is a trader who heads a brokerage firm offering electronic trading as well as training. He writes, "My task here is to teach you to play with fire without getting burned."

The workbook presents an overview of the markets and introductions to electronic direct-access trading (EDAT), indexes and indicators, and technical analysis. Also included are detailed explanations on how to pick tradable stocks (are you a specialist, scalper, or shepherd?); trade the news (earnings, splits, economic announcements); and profit from going short ("trading the bear inside you"). The chapters on market psychology and money and mind management are particularly astute ("The Emotional Bank Account Is Funded by Attitude"), and all are cross-referenced and reinforced in the corresponding audio tapes. The CD-ROM includes effective audio-visual presentations on the components of an EDAT trading platform, the analytical tools, trading mechanics and execution methods--most illuminating are the trades the author navigates, tick by tick, on NASDAQ level two.

In all, Nassar has done an admirable job of creating a thorough introductory training course, and his enthusiasm and passion for markets and trading are infectious. Those serious about learning to trade successfully will find this an effective--and hopefully profitable--introduction. --Scott Harrison

2 out of 5 stars A small fish in a competitive pond.......2007-04-01

If there were no other books for those desiring to learn to trade this book would be ok. This covers a lot of the basics but not as well as many others available. I have been investing in equities online for five years - before that in mutual funds that I selected. I'm now looking to start trading based on technical analysis rather than fundamentals. Two books that I would suggest that are more comprehensive and easier to read are Toni Turner's book "A Beginner's Guide to Day Trading Online" and the best I have read so far by John Carter "Mastering the Trade".

1 out of 5 stars Bad Book by an Excellent Author.......2006-03-19

Maybe "bad" is a bit harsh. David Nassar is a real and successful trader, and a guy who has years and years of experience training and managing highly successful traders to boot. He writes great articles for Active Trader and Futures magazines, and has written another book that I consider to be five-star outstanding.

But this book is disappointingly basic. It focuses on the mechanics of how trading is done and gives very little, if any, actual trading methodologies. A quick look at the table of contents and you will get the overview. It seemed to me like half the book was discussing how an order is placed!

Perhaps part of the problem is being outdated. Deciding how to route an order these days is a very insignificant factor in daytrading; the days of the SOES bandits are long, long gone. Broker's trading platforms now use smart routing technologies to get the best fill, and as a sharp trader you are using limit orders on stocks that have a 1 cent spread anyway. I suppose this was written back when you could take advantage of price differences between ECNs and Market Makers.

Your time is much better spent reading his other book, Rules of the Trade, where you can actually learn a few things and become inspired.

bought book flipped through for 5 minutes, found good use starting a woodfire. all the info contained can be had for free on the internet. if youve been trading more then 2 days you already know more then the scope of this book

3 out of 5 stars You can make it using a simpler approach.......2005-11-17

I like some of the ideas presented by Mr. Nassar, however i think he needs to update his book and get a little bit more practical.

When you make a trade either your going to lose money or your going to make money, and some other times you will break even. When you win some body else will lose and so forth, but that's NOT what's important.

The most important aspect in day trading is the knowledge FILTER you employ to make your buy & sell decisions. There are many "fantastic" strategies outhere, but you need to test them in order to discover which ones help you the most.

Complicated strategies that rely on a "boat load" of technical indicators can make you slow, and being slow in this game can be as dangerous as not knowing what to do in the first place.

I think the worst thing that can happen to a beginner day trader is to get information overload. It's better to go step by step, and test a simple strategy that can show you how to focus on concrete ways to make money.

Fortunatly there are some good sites on the web today that can show you how to trade stocks in practical and effective ways. One of those sites is Stress Free Traders ( StressFreeTraders com )

In the end, stock investing & trading is all about buying and selling according to your knowledge FILTER. Once you master and follow youre proven filter parameters like a clock, you can expect to start making serious amounts of cash on a consistent basis.

5 out of 5 stars Experience Comes Through.......2003-10-30

Awesome ideas to make money with. I have been trading 35 years and feel the ideas in this book are timeless techniques that I know work. The book was written with experience and it shows. I've read many and this is one of the best.

Thanks to the ever-increasing real-time access that the public has to financial markets, it's now possible to play in the same league as the market makers who drive the daily price fluctuations of a stock. It's also possible--in fact it's certain--that you'll lose everything to these seasoned professionals unless you have some idea of what you're doing. Which is where David Nassar's How to Get Started in Electronic Day Trading comes in.

Unlike most books of this genre, How to Get Started in Electronic Day Trading really is a primer. Nassar, who runs his own trading firm, does not presume you have much knowledge about how markets work. Instead, the author provides an excellent overview of the dynamics that drive stock prices and the various kinds of electronic access, as well as the broad strategies employed by successful day traders. In addition to providing information about how to open an E-DAT account, Nassar stresses the importance of developing a focused trading strategy and recommends working with a simulator before risking your hard-earned cash.

Day trading is definitely not for everyone, and this book alone will not make you a successful day trader. But if you're the slightest bit interested, How to Get Started in Electronic Day Trading will satisfy your curiosity and may even help you launch a second career. --Harry C. Edwards

3 out of 5 stars Get more practical.......2005-02-15

This book is good but outdated. In any event you cant expect to get the wholy grail of trading in one single book. You need to read and test and test again until you come up with a trading system that produces you consistent results.

Above all you need to focus on a set of stocks and sectors that you feel comfortable with. Personally I like momentum trading, because when you get to master a momentum trading strategy you are able to generate a good amount of cash in relatively short period of time every day.

The main thing with momentum trading is that youve got to learn how to identify and handle the best momentum opportunities. In other words be able to separate the good opportunities from the bad ones.

Some places on the web offer good information on the subject. One of them is Chathotstocks com

Just dont forget that a trader cant never stop learning. In trading it pays to know more than the crowd.

5 out of 5 stars Read Chapter 5.......2003-03-06

Picked up this book at our local library. Was'nt expecting much, but then I flipped through to Chapter Five.

Chapter Five is worth the book price. In it you will learn how the market is moved, by watching the bid/ask prices and size.

I only trade futures, not stocks, but the information in chapter five confirmed the reality of trading in all markets. The strong money will win - every time - at will. You need to know what to look for and which side they are on.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2002-03-04

I read both of Nassar's books and they are both excellent additions to anyone's library on trading. He is clear, direct, firm, and no nonsense. That is what I like about this author the most. He does no selling in the book and only offers information, page after page. I have read many books on trading and most authors have something to sell, Nassar's book makes you search for how to reach his firm,... I think he is world class in his approach and has integrity. His material is simple to understand and the ideas are easy to incorporate into trading yet rewarding. He makes it clear that trading success is about you, not a magic formula that so many portray is possible, which in fact is not. Read Nassar's books if you want it straight.

4 out of 5 stars Read the title, and then review!.......2002-03-04

A lot of the reviews here are unecessarily harsh. The title of the book is "How to Get Started in..." It is not an end all be all of day trading books, but it is a highly informative book, and I believe it accomplishes what it sets out to do (get a novice's feet wet in day trading). I wouldn't start day trading with this book alone, but it is a good start.

2 out of 5 stars Outdated and overpriced........2000-12-28

When it comes to money making e.fads (as daytrading is now seen) you need the absolute most accurate up-to-the-minute information available to succeed. This book is simply none of the above. Sorry.

If you really want to know how to get started (or if you even should) go to one of the daytrading .coms and read their FAQ. Their information will be the most up-to-daye around, and they might even offer advice that will help you get your finances in order before you start.

                              Book Description

This volume in the Handbook of Optical Constants of Solids is the first and only book to provide comprehensive coverage of refractive index and thermo-optic coefficients. It contains the refractive indexes and thermo-optic coefficients for nonlinear crystals, semiconductors, optical glasses, and fiber glasses. The Sellmeier coefficients of two physically meaningful Sellmeier equations are evaluated and are used to calculate these values throughout the normal transmission region of these optical materials. The author has also included analysis and explanations for some temperature-dependent optical devices/systems

                              * Presents the optical constants for over 70 technologically interesting crystals and commercial glasses
                              * Details various techniques for measuring the optical constants and mathematical models for analytical calculations of some data
                              * Includes thermo-optic coefficients that are necessary to calculate the refractive index of the optical material at any operating temperature
                              * Describes how all optical devices (both temperature dependent and independent) can be explained satisfactorily by using the two Sellmeier equations

The Road to Mars is the second novel by Eric Idle--yes, that Eric Idle, the guy from Monty Python's Flying Circus. No, the book isn't like a Monty Python skit (and a good thing too, since silly sketches are no basis for a successful novel). Yes, Monty Python is mentioned in the book, but the self-referentiality is blessedly confined to two paragraphs. Yes, The Road to Mars is funny. It's also genuine science fiction. And it's satirical, sharply characterized, well-written, thoughtful, fun, and more complex than you'd expect from its picaresque structure, in which a stand-up-comedian odd couple and their robot knock around the outer planets in search of decent gigs. Well, Alex and Lewis are looking for work (and sex); their android, Carlton, unfazed by his own irony impairment, is trying to write a thesis about comedy. The trio quickly find themselves mixed up with a mysterious beauty, a famous diva, the captain of the solar cruise ship Princess Di, and a band of terrorists determined to blow up Mars.

In addition to The Road to Mars and Monty Python scripts, Eric Idle is the author of the SF/fantasy novel Hello Sailor (1975), the play Pass the Butler (1982), and the children's book The Quite Remarkable Adventures of the Owl and the Pussycat. --Cynthia Ward

                              Book Description

With Monty Python's Flying Circus, Eric Idle proved he was one of the funniest people in the world. And with The Road to Mars he reaffirms this with a raucously sidesplitting vengence.

Muscroft and Ashby are a comedy team on "The Road to Mars," an interplanetary vaudeville circuit of the future. Accompanied by Carlton, a robot incapable of understanding irony but driven to learn the essence of humor, Alex and Lewis bumble their way into an intergalactic terrorist plot. Supported by a delicious cast, including a micropaleontologist narrator (he studies the evolutionary impact of the last ten minutes) and the ultra-diva Brenda Woolley, The Road to Mars is a fabulous trip through Eric Idle's inimitable world, a "universe expanding at the speed of laughter."

3 out of 5 stars Road to Nowhere.......2006-10-04

I am a huge Python fan and a particularly devoted fan of Eric Idle. Keeping this in mind, this book is a huge disappointment. In this sci-fi novel, the humor is so untraceable that the Starship Enterprise crew members could not be less funny.

What was Eric Idle thinking? Terry Jones wrote a successful science fiction novel with Douglas Adams. Yet in the forum of science fiction, Idle's humor seems non-existent. In the story, a b-level comedy team and their robot attempt to foil a terrorist plot. While this plot unravels, Carlton the robot writes a thesis on comedy which seems more like an excuse for Idle to mock 20th Century humor. Even when Carlton dresses in women's clothes, I sensed Idle was desperately trying to find humor that was not there. The attempts at humor fall very flat.

Python fans and fans of literature can skip this book. Finding exactly where this book went wrong may require Carlton the robot to write a new thesis. While this book is a good idea in principle, the final product is unworthy of recommendation.

                              4 out of 5 stars Perhaps not a masterpiece..........2006-05-12

I belong to the generation that grew up on Monty Python. Therefore I had to get this book. I do have mixed feelings about it. First, do not expect a Monty Python style book! All the members of the Monty Python group are now making their own careers, on their own merits - not their Monty Python merits. Second, some parts of it are really good, others, shall we say, not so good....
Basically, the story is about a not very succesful comic duo and their robot. Superimposed on their story is a rather bland crime story, involving interplanetary terrorists.
The book has its funny moments, that is true, but that is not the reason for reading it. Rather, Idle uses the book to explain the nature of comedy and the character of the comedian. That is a serious and interesting topic. It is the robot who is not happy with its station in life and wants to become a comedian itself. To achieve that it must first work out what comedy is and how it works.

                              3 out of 5 stars A decent read.......2006-03-20

I'm a huge Python fan so I thought I'd give the book a shot. To his credit, Eric Idle does write a decent book. I think that it's got some really awkward phrasing and an awkward plot line that detract from the overall fun. The funny moments are definitely funny but it takes some patience to get there with this book. I'm sure that it helps that I'm a Python fan because I'm not sure that all readers would have stuck with it.

                              5 out of 5 stars Sci-fi fun!.......2005-01-17

A cross between Monty Python and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Engaging story. Great characters. And some truly insightful thinking about the roots of comedy. Wonderful. Highly Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars The Road to Oblvion for Eric Idle if He Keeps This Up.......2003-12-12

Eric Idle tries very hard here to be funny while offering deep insights into the meaning and function of comedy, but unfortunately doesn't succeed at being either funny or meaningful. This is really more of Idle's excuse for why comics are so f***ed up and why we should really feel sorry for them. The first part of the story reads like bad Douglas Adams, but then Idle just starts trying too hard and the book gets worse. Ironically, the mystery of what is going on with the cruise ship Keppler on which Idle's fictional comedy team of Lewis and Muscroft gets stuck is more interesting than his musings on comedy.

I should have realized the book was going to be weak when I read Steve Martin's front cover testimonial, which says "I laugh. I cried. Then I read the book." Funny, but not exactly a testimonial, more like the thing your friend says when he wants to give you a good quote but doesn't really like the book. If you're jonesing for good science fiction comedy and have run out of Douglas Adams' books, try the British sci fi comedy series "Red Dwarf," or buy Sharyn McCrumb's "Bimbos of the Death Sun," which is dated but nevertheless excellent. But skip this book unless you really have nothing better to fall back on. It's readable, and it's moderately enjoyable, but it's not really very good. A disappointing effort from a genuine hero of the comedy world.

Not very interesting sf, and mostly not at all funny comedy. Therefore, this book is a waste of time. Unless it is aiming to be something else entirely, and I completely missed that in the middle of Red Dwarf ultra-lite, and other elements like that, to notice. For something like that though, you would be much better turning to Ben Elton and books like Stark.

3 out of 5 stars Little information about Arab-Israeli wars.......2001-06-06

This book is great if you are interested in only the negotiation process between several of the Arab countries and Israel, but it fails to describe how they got into the situation they are in. To be able to appreciate this book fully, you must already possess a good background in the conflict itself, as well as know who lost/gained what in which war. The book glosses over the wars that were intermittant with the negotiations and you need to figure out for yourself what land had already been taken and what land had just been taken in the last war.
