4 out of 5 stars All-in one, explains the whole enchilada. Great for students.......1999-06-27

Kleppner is the one name I think when I'm in a doubt regarding any stage of the advertising procedure. The book is not extremely intensive, but explains in a precise way each stage. It might be too USA oriented, but works fine for international students. Surely a must in every student's library.

Much of East Asia continues to grow rapidly, driven to a considerable extent by China. Urbanization is proceeding at pace. Demand for infrastructure services is increasing massively, particularly in cities. Much of the demand comes from the newly urbanized poor. Infrastructure has to meet their needs, but has also to continue to provide the underpinnings for the region¡¦s growth. The complexity of responding to these demands is greater than ever, and the cost of getting things wrong very high. Poorly conceived infrastructure investments today would have a huge environmental, economic, and social impact ¡V and be very costly to fix later. Neglecting the infrastructure needs of people remaining in poor parts of East Asia ¡V particularly in rural areas, and in isolated countries of the region; and failing to include them in growth, would also be costly, in human and political terms. This study is about East Asia, and it¡¦s about infrastructure. It¡¦s about poverty and growth, and it¡¦s about transport, water, sanitation, power, and telecommunications ¡V both the infrastructure, and the infrastructure services. Infrastructure is only one part of the development challenge, but its impacts are among the most important. Connecting East Asia looks at the role that infrastructure has played in supporting East Asia¡¦s growth and looks ahead at what the challenges are for the future, and how to approach them.

                        Book Description

The economy of the Roman Empire was dominated by the business of agriculture. It employed the vast majority of the Empire's labor force and provided the wealth on which the upper classes depended for their social privileges. Consequently, the way in which upper-class Romans maintained and profited from their agricultural investments played a crucial role in shaping the basic relationships characterizing the Roman economy.
In Investment, Profit, and Tenancy Dennis P. Kehoe defines the economic mentality of upper-class Romans by analyzing the assumptions that Roman jurists in the Digest of Justinian made about investment and profit in agriculture as they addressed legal issues involving private property. In particular the author analyzes the duties of guardians in managing the property of their wards, and the bequeathing of agricultural property. He bases his analysis on Roman legal sources, which offer a comprehensive picture of the economic interests of upper-class Romans. Farm tenancy was crucial to these interests, and Kehoe carefully examines how Roman landowners contended with the legal, social, and economic institutions surrounding farm tenancy as they pursued security from their agricultural investments.
Kehoe argues that Roman jurists offer a consistent picture of agriculture as a form of investment that was grounded in upper-class conceptions of the Roman economy. In the eyes of the jurists, agriculture represented the only form of investment capable of providing upper-class Romans with economic security, and this situation had important implications for the relationship between landowners and tenants. Landowners who sought economic stability from their agricultural holdings preferred to simplify the task of managing their estates by delegating the work and costs to their tenants. This tended to make landowners depend on the expertise and resources of tenants, which in turn gave the tenants significant bargaining power. This dynamic relationship is traced in the jurists' regulation of farm tenancy, as the jurists adapted Roman law to the economic realities of the Roman empire.
Investment, Profit, and Tenancy will be of interest to classicists as well as to scholars of preindustrial comparative economics.
Dennis P. Kehoe is Professor of Classical Studies, Tulane University.

"This is a book that will astonish you."National Geographic Adventure

Whether hanging from suspension bridges to track the flight of raptors, scuba diving into the crushing cores of moving glaciers, or exploring the burning cauldrons of active volcanoes, there is a special breed of scientist willing to go wherever they must and do whatever it takes to get the data they need.

Science and nature writer and photojournalist Peter Lane Taylor, accompanied nine of these "extreme scientists" and experienced firsthand the rigors of their special brand of research. In Science at the Extreme, he combines stunning original photographs with gripping narrative accounts to take readers on a thrilling adventurewith a purposeto the very frontiers of discovery.

                            Customer Reviews:

                            5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2000-12-20

More than just a "coffee table" book, this is a fascinating journey into the world of "extreme science". The photography is outstanding and the commentary articulate, educational and approachable. A great "maiden voyage" from Peter Lane Taylor. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book by a new author.......2000-09-26

Taylor has done a superb job with his first book. Each chapter is captivating and full of new information. Instead of glossing over the sometimes difficult technical material which is discussed in this book, Taylor writes in a way that shares the depth and rigor of the research that is the subject of 'Science at the Extreme'. Both the writing and the photography in this book are engaging and instructional; and in each chapter, the reader's appetite for 'extreme science' grows stronger.

It is encouraging to see a book that does such an exceptional job of bringing together the popular culture ingredients common in National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, with the rigorous components of scientific research that exist at the National Science Foundation and in academia-at-large. 'Science at the Extreme' is just the kind of work that is needed to reinvigorate student interest in science in America, although it certainly does not appear to be the objective of the book. I have no doubt that high-schools and colleges will have to start offering 'Science at the Extreme' classes after students get a hold of this book.

I'm already looking forward to Taylor's next offering, although he has a tough act to follow since the bar has been set so high with 'Science at the Extreme'.

The only thing missing in 'Science at the Extreme' is an order form for buying large-size prints of Taylor's inspiring photographs...

5 out of 5 stars The diving aspect.......2000-09-19

I was very much impressed with the chapter on cave diving and the excellent leadership of the WKPP. These guys and gals are a very select few diving to depths of 300ft with total dive time of 15 plus hours. The research of florida caves is extensive and the surface has only been scraped. The dedication and team development of the WKPP is beyond anything on the planet.

                                Book Description

The increasing emphasis and importance of mesoscopic systems for tomorrow's high-tech electronics industry as well as a growing research interest in the subject has given rise to the need for a modern introductory text at the graduate level. This book aims to provide the necessary theory and tools to carry out research into the various aspects of the subject.

It starts with a chapter on the theory of quantum transport giving a survey of the basic theory used in transport phenomena including scattering, linear response theory, weak localization, conductance fluctuations and the Landauer-Büttiker formalism. Various aspects of chaos in quantum systems as well as dissipative quantum systems are discussed. Other topics of importance such as single electron tunneling, driven bistable systems, quantized transport and electron liquids are also covered in detail.

Graduate students as well as newcomers to this exciting and expanding field will find this work useful to adopt the necessary theory and overview required to go deeper into the original literature and to carry out research.

                                Book Description

Sarah Pelletier is unemployed and in a very bad mood. Her film company has tanked—right before Christmas, no less—leaving her with one lousy swivel chair and a lifetime supply of paper clips. Her headhunter is a fool who can’t pronounce her name; her irritatingly gorgeous roommate’s idea of a fun time is to drag her to pink-slip parties; and, to top it all off, her last twelve bucks are trapped in a Metro Card. Something has got to give.

So begins one smart twentysomething’s quest for the right job in New York City. After extricating herself from a morass of self-pity strewn with candy bar wrappers and wine bottles, Sarah turns to the all-important task of padding her résumé—while artfully dodging her parents’ attempts to bribe her into law school. Of course, padding your résumé puts you in jeopardy of being construed as over-qualified. In which case you might try unpadding your résumé, which then puts you in danger of being labeled inexperienced. Which leaves you with the option of stalking your ex-boss in the hope that she’ll drag you along in her ascent to greatness in another company. Unless she stabs you in the back first. Meanwhile, when a temp job saddles her with a massive crush on a Brooklyn-dwelling dreamboat named Jake, Sarah’s already full plate is crowded with lust, jealousy, and mild obsession, just when she’s trying to be professional.

This hilarious first novel from a confident new voice in women’s fiction offers a pitch-perfect take on the dignity-whittling survival game of job hunting—starring a lovably neurotic heroine whose problems ring refreshingly true.

4 out of 5 stars An Awesome Read.......2006-03-22

I read this book in 2 hours, I could not put it down. We have all been there, done that in terms of the job world. I empathized with the fact that Sarah did not want the administrative jobs. I gave it four stars because the ending was not really an ending at all...I felt that I had invested enough time in the character to deserve to know how she ended up.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and fun!.......2005-10-07

Jennifer Van Der Kwast's "Pounding the Pavement," centered around Sarah, who was unemployed for six months after getting fired from her job as a Content Development Assistant. Sarah wanted to get a job in publishing but unfortunately she was stucked doing various temp jobs which she hated. However, in one of her temp jobs, she met Jake, who was also a movie fanatic like herself. Unfortunately, Jake seemed to be still carrying a torch for his ex-girlfriend. At the same time, Sarah's parents were breathing down her neck to get a job or go to law school which they would pay for.

I enjoy this book as I can relate to Sarah's situation as I have been there myself. I think many twenty-something females would be able to relate to the character. It was funny and very real when the author wrote about how temp agencies considered Sarah to be overqualified if she used her previous title, "Content Development Assistant" and should instead used "Administrative Assistant." This is highly recommended for those who has ever been unemployed or currently unemployed, still seeking for the right job.

This book is a very easy breezy read (took me an evening at best). I liked the fact that the main character (Sarah) wasn't desperate for boyfriend (a typical chick lit theme). Sarah's problem ceneters more on not having a job and really not willing to settle too much when it comes finding one. She'll make do and pay her bills but she doesn't really compromise who she is and I found that to be very refreshing. I wouldn't say Sarah has the best set of priorities out there - she whine alot about the 12 on her metro card, not having and money, etc... but she goes out an awful lot for someone who is living lean! I was out of work for 6 months right after Sept. 11th so I could really identify with the whole job search aspect of this read. It wasn't heavy reading - rather enjoyable for an evening read or rainy day read. I wouldn't purchase it though...

I would liken this book to the TV show Seinfeld. It was said that Seinfeld was the show about "nothing" but, oh, it was so good! This book is basically a story without much of a plot but, oh, surprisingly, it was so very good. Only a gifted writer could make me enjoy every page of a book about finding a job, of all things. Jennifer van der Kwast's writing is witty without being trite and her descriptions make you feel like you're right in New York with her. It will be interesting to follow her writing as she grows older - hopefully there will be more books.

When I taught at a university, I told my students that they would have a 40-year career, after graduation, in a changing society. Their employment goals needed to be broad enough and flexible enough so that they could adapt. It is also helpful to be street smart. As I have pointed out to friends, there is a significant difference between being book smart and being street smart. A street smart person will survive in an urban jungle, and avoid being eaten by tigers. It is all very well to have an interest in writing, music, art, or acting, but keep in mind that poets can starve. It is necessary to have enough marketable skills to obtain a day job in order to pay the rent.

The heroine of the present novel, Sarah Pelletier, left Brown University with a BA in English and a Phi Beta Kappa key, but not much in the way of survival skills. Universities don't seem to teach that subject. She discovers that employers expect people to have knowledge of things like Powerpoint presentations, financial spreadsheets, and making coffee (it would also help if you could bake cookies for the break room). She does have some useful skills such as knowing how to clear jams from copy machines.

After a number of jobs that prove to be temporary, Sarah is unemployed. She could go back to school for an advanced degree, and make herself even more over-qualified (there is no shortage of lawyers and MBAs - I know one MBA who ended up as a payroll clerk). She continues to send out resumes and learns the art and pitfalls of resume writing. Some of her contacts are not that useful, and there is a little back stabbing. She draws her unemployment checks, and keeps trying. She does turn into a bit of a grunge, sleeping in late and dressing down (every day is casual Friday).

When you finally find Mr. Right at the same time that you find the Perfect Job, and they are at opposite ends of the known universe, what do you do?

The story gets a bit heavy on discussions of motion pictures and music, which is the reason I did not give it five stars.

Finally, I would refer you to my pulp fiction short story "Lila" in the March 2005 issue of SpinningS Magazine (an e-zine) for a story about outsourcing, pink slips and, well, other things.
