Poorly organized and insufficient........2005-02-09
This book is poorly organized. It lacks sufficient examples for many of the problems and exercises - what little is available is not sufficiently labeled to be fully understood. The Managerial Accounting Study Guide that can be purchased separately offers very little help. Furthermore, no answers are available in the book or the study guide, so unless you purchase the Solutions Manual (yes, you have to spend more and more to make sense of this mess), you will be lost. As a college student with a 3.9 GPA, I can say with confidence, this book is terrible.
A Big Dose of Managerial Accounting.......2000-04-27
This book is very good for teaching you managerial accounting. I used this book in college and found it to actually be of use, unlike a lot of college textbooks. You could read the chapter and be able to do the exercises at the end of the chapter.
I mean, you know the types of books where they have questions and it's literally impossible to deduce how to answer the questions from the chapter. This book is not like that. It teaches you how to prepare specialized documents for internal business usage. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I felt that the information could be better organized as to make it easier to find.

Among the many topics Benn examines in depth is the creation of the Securities Investors Protection Corporation, the agency that insures against loss of the cash and securities left by investors in their brokers' hands. He shows how stock brokers' commissions came to be competitive and low, instead of fixed and high (a special benefit for today's day traders), and how members of the New York Stock Exchange became able to sell shares in their firms to the general public, opening a bountiful source of permanent capital. He goes on to cover the creation of the Central Certificate System, which led to a dramatic increase in trading volume later, and how the NYSE was reorganized, benefiting not only members but investors as well. Benn also explores how NYSE member firms became authorized to sell annuities and other insurance products, in itself a billion-dollar business. Finally, in an especially telling chapter, he discusses how and why discrimination on Wall Street based on class, religion, race, and gender declined (and by inference, why in some places it still lingers.)

Terrific explanation of a time many have forgotten, when Wall Street nearly collapsed not from scandal but from hubris, incompetence, and just plain sloppiness. Remember when the markets were closed on Wednesdays so firms could process their paperwork? How about Ross Perots adventure to conquer the street? Me neither. Unless you lived it, you'll never get closer to knowing how many times the whole ballgame nearly came undone.

poor translation.......2001-11-06
The letters are amazingly interesting if you are fluent in Spanish. However, the translations into English are literal and are unbelievable poor and almost humorous. The premise for the book is a good one, though it would have been much more meaningful had the translations been more accurate. I'd recommend it if you're bilingual and recommend you to skip it if you're not.

Thomas K. Carr examines the religious epistemology of John Henry Newman alongside the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer. The two writers are found to cover a surprising amount of common ground: They make similar claims, and they fall into similar errors. A critical examination of four of Newman's leading ideas -- first principles, antecedent probability, doctrinal development, and the illative sense -- are compared with such Gadamerian themes as self-understanding, Bildung, projection, tradition, and the fusion of horizons. Carr concludes with a constructive proposal that applies a Newman-Gadamer synthesis to questions about knowledge of God.

Fails to Break Free of ADA Dogma.......2002-04-19
I bought this book recently hoping to share it with my children. I will not do so because the book suggests some practices that are not healthy.
For example the book recommends brushing with a flouride toothepaste. The "fluoride" used in toothepastes is virtually always calcium fluoride obtained as a by-product of the fertilizer and aluminum industries. This fluoride has not been demonstrated to help prevent cavities in any way. The ADA has suggested that "fluoride" prevents cavities. There is no science to back up this statement. I personally have done my best to avoid fluoride for the past two years, and I feel that my teeth are healthier than ever.
The book also fails to warn readers of the dangers of amalgam fillings. It claims that amalgam fillings are made from "silver and other metals." Ha. Dental amalgam actually has little to no silver in it. The amalgams are usually about 50% mercury, and other metals such as nickel and copper.
The book is beneficial only in that it recommends caring for your teeth by brushing and visiting a dentist.
Much better information will be found in such sources as Breiner's "Whole Body Dentistry", Morton's "Elements of Danger", Huggins' "Uninformed Consent", and Jerome's "Tooth Truth".

This is an excellent choice for young readers. It is very comprehensive, interesting, and has excellent photographs. It is the most well-written book on this subject, and I have read them all! This is my number one choice for a children's book about dental health.

Stone buildings and monuments form the cultural centres of many of the world's urban areas. Frequently these areas are prone to high levels of atmospheric pollution that promote a variety of aggressive stone decay processes. Because of this, stone decay is now widely recognized as a severe threat to much of our cultural heritage. If this threat is to be successfully addressed it is essential that the symptoms of decay are clearly identified, that appropriate stone properties are accurately characterized and that decay processes are precisely identified. It is undoubtedly the case that successful conservation has to be underpinned by a comprehensive understanding of the causes of decay and the factors that control them. The accomplishment of these demanding goals requires an interdisciplinary approach based on co-operation between geologists, environmental scientists, chemists, material scientists, civil engineers, restorers and architects. In pursuit of this collaboration, this volume aims to strengthen the knowledge base dealing with the causes, consequences, prevention and solution of stone decay problems.

B Decays. The revisions are necessary because of the extensive amount of new data and new theoretical ideas. This book reviews what is known about b-quark decays and also looks at what can be learned in the future.
The importance of this research area is increasing, as evidenced by the approval of the luminosity upgrade for CESR and the asymmetric B factories at SLAC and KEK, and the possibility of experiments at hadron colliders.
The key experimental observations made thus far, measurement of the lifetimes of the different B species, B0-B0 mixing, the discovery of "Penguin" mediated decays, and the extraction of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb from semileptonic decays, as well as more mundane results, are described in great detail by the experimentalists who have been closely involved with making the measurements. Theoretical progress in understanding b-quark decays using HQET and lattice gauge techniques are described by theorists who have developed and used these techniques.
Synthesizing the experimental and theoretical information, several articles discuss the implications for the "Standard Model" and how further tests can be done using measurements of CP violation in the B system.

Comic masterpiece.......2004-06-28
This has been one of my favorite comic novels ever since I first bought it in 1976. I re-read it twice. (The only other books that I regularly re-read are : "The Hamlet" by Wm. Faulkner, "Death on the Installment Plan" by Louis-Ferdinand Celine, "The Magnificent Ambersons" by Booth Tarkington, the screenplays by Preston Sturges, "Virgil Thomson" by Virgil Thomson, "The Symphonies of Havergal Brian" by Malcolm Macdonald, "The Annotated Gilbert and Sullivan" edited by Ian Bradley, "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" by B. Traven, "Men Against the State : the Expositors Of Individualist Anarchism in America, 1827-1908" by James J. Martin, and "Topper" by Thorne Smith).
I lived 26 years in Newport, Rhode Island, so the fact that this novel's climactic hurricane occurs at a music festival in the island town of Neaport was a special treat.
P.S. It had been about 15 years since my last re-reading, and my opinion has somewhat changed. The characters now strike me as cartoonish. There are not enough simple sentences to provide relief from the relentless stream of overblown language (P.G. Wodehouse does this sort of thing better, and he confines his efforts at self-consciously pompous verbiage to dialogue, not to every sentence -- simple sentences are few and far between in "Mawrdew"). Nevertheless, I still enjoy the many patches of manic exuberance. If I were were writing a new review, I would probably drop the rating down to 4 stars instead of my original 5 stars.
Gorgeousness for gorgeousness' sake.......2002-05-03
After seeing blurbs on Mawrdew Czgowchwz in two magazines and an on-line newsletter, I said "I have to read this book!" Now I have read it and I didn't. The writing is gorgeous, but too much so. Brobdingnagian aggregations of rare multisyllabic verbiage traipse, saunter, stroll, galumph across the page-sometimes arm-in-arm with an idiomatic epigram or eponym-implying to the ophthalmic interlocutor notions of sylvatic artistry, ecstatic glamour and libidinous merriment. Do you know what I mean, toots?
McCourt's theme is the transcendent power of art. The problem I have with the book is McCourt makes you work too hard. His style and vocabulary get in the way of his message. Achieving transcendence in a spiritual sense takes discipline and stamina. But to be whisked away in the concert hall, all you have to do is listen.
Mawrdew Czgowchcz has engaging characters (with fabulous names) a terrific plot, wicked satire and many fun incidents all of which you will enjoy, if you can pry them out McCourt's thickly gilded sentences. Yes, it is very much like Firbank, but Firbank, for his baroque obtuseness, is still swift and immediate on the page.
I wanted to be engulfed and swept away by Mawrdew, instead I just bobbed along the surface, admiring but not fully appreciating. A little less gorgeousness would serve Mawrdew Czgowchcz much better.
Dazzling but not enchanting.......2002-03-12
The comparisons that have made between MAWRDEW CZGOWCHWZ and the novels of Ronald Firbank are just... perhaps too much so. Part of the charm of Firbank's novels is their utter singularity; they seem so one-of-a-kind, that they captivate by their. In MAWRDEW, McCourt transplants the heady atmosphere of Firbank's faraway kingdoms and cities to the "Gotham" of the postwar era, but the effect seems a little derivative. Moreover, while McCourt attains the kinds of virtuoso effects of Firbank's prose you keep getting the feeling you're expected to admire the effort rather than be moved by it. There's nothing like the deep-seated anguish that makes the best of Firbank's novels (such as THE FLOWER BENEATH THE FOOT) really transcend their glibness. Almost inevitably the foreword for this edition was written by Wayne Koestenbaum: the book seems to have been written exactly with him in mind as its audience.
A Triumphant Return.......2002-03-05
It's lovely to have this brilliant novel back in print, easily the best novel on the opera milieu ever published. But it's the maximalist prose that is the true star here--half Firbank, half Joyce, as Wayne Koestenbaum points out in his excellent introduction. I envy anyone reading this for the first time.
Wonderful, but Not For Everyone.......2002-03-01
This book is not for everyone. The prose style is dense, there are far too many characters, and the novel requires at least a passing knowledge of opera. However, the cattyness of the observations, the rhythmns of the sentences and their unexpected twists and turns, make for delightful reading.
A sample of the prose is the best introduction.
"While His Scarlet Eminence and Msgr. Finneagle sat playing their esoteric version of Monopoly, the custom-crafted board for which could be seen to represent the several circles of Dante's Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso, as well as the ground plan for the entire Vatican, both the above-ground palaces' apartments, closets, and chapels, and those labyrinthine catacomb reaches where Darkest Rumor is said on good authority to repose in thrilling reptile fashion. His Scarlet Eminence snickered in pixyish glee, having caught his opponent in the square of the seventh circle of hell (with four hotels). Monsignor trembled (livid), bankrupt of plenary indulgence."
Should you find this amusing and well-written, you'll love this book. If not, you'd best pass.
