Customer Reviews:
A buyer.......2006-09-18
Zero-. Author is more concerned of protecting his macros and VBA modules then to give real knowledge to the readers. So the rest of his books flooding the market, instead of just One but really good.
Absolutely first rate!.......2005-12-31
It seems as if I'm the pariah -- given the lukewarm nature of the preceeding reviews -- but, not afraid to sound contrarian, I unreservedly give this book five stars.
I believe "Mastering Financial Modelling" is not only one of the best books on the subject, but it is simple to read and understand, and convinces the reader that creating your own financial models is a lot of fun. I'm not sure you can acquire the same sense of satisfaction after reading its competition.
If you aren't sure about this book's utility as regards your immediate needs, feel free to visit www.financial-models.com, which gives a superficial representation of what you'll find in the book.
PS: I owned Benninga's "Financial Modelling" for about 4 years, before I sold it so that I could buy Day's book. Benninga's book is good for finance formulars and so on, but Day goes a step farther and gives you real models with the formulars and explains in greater detail how things like Combo Boxes work and so forth.
The only quirk with this book is that it does not come with a CD-Rom as promised on the website. I was pretty upset at first and e-mailed the author about it. But he quickly referred me to the Financial Times website, where I was able to obtain free downloads. If you own a MAC the files might not work for you. Nonetheless, I believe this is a relatively minor distraction in an otherwise fantastically put together piece of work.
Ignore previous reviewer -- password protection IS a major problem.......2005-07-24
Even if you copy the templates to your hard drive, you CANNOT customise the many password-protected spreadsheet templates included on the CD.
Even more disappointingly, the password prevents you from using Excel's audit function to trace formulae components.
This means that to understand formulae one must resort to the tedious, stone-age method of looking in the formula bar and noting down by hand that the formula is, for example," = (sum (A6:G12)) * [next sheet!]Q7 + ([sheet 7!]T78 / [sheet 3!] c24)", and then translating it all into English.
In summary, if you want to teach yourself from this book it will cost you a very substantial time investment in addition to the book's cover price.
ignore previous reviewer.......2003-01-03
if you actually install the files, instead of running them off of the write-protected CD-ROM, you can edit them.
Good Ideas - BUT You Can't Customize the Spreadsheets.......2001-10-05
Some good ideas about applying Microsoft Excel are included in book and the accompanying CD-ROM. But unfortunately the included models are not practical for most American readers. They use English nomenclature - NPAT instead of Net Income, etc. - and have formatting that looks ok on screen but is less than presentation quality when printed.
The author has password protected the spreadsheets so you can't customize them to your own needs. A serious drawback for the serious user, clearly the intended readership for this book.

This book examines progress within Russia's financial sector and provides a road map for promoting dialogue on and implementing improvements. The book is intended to complement and support the joint strategic plan of Russia's government and Central Bank for banking reform, a plan that includes many already-implemented legislative and regulatory efforts aimed at strengthening the Russian financial sector as a whole. The authors contend that any comprehensive strategy designed to enhance trust in Russian banking will need to focus on four major themes: 1) encouraging financial intermediation by improving the legal and accounting infrastructure for financial sector development; 2) improving the current structure and performance of the banking system; 3) improving the effectiveness of bank regulation, bank restructuring, and liquidation; and 4) enhancing enterprise access to finance.

Book Description
Microsoft Excel has a wide range of scientific functions that the average user would never encounter, let alone utilise, and students keen to use Excel to analyse and represent the results of their experiments are currently forced to wade through almost incomprehensible manuals on Excel. 'A Guide to Microsoft Excel for Scientists and Engineers' gives scientific and engineering students a clear introduction to the use of excel for the analysis and presentation of experimental results, before going on to discuss some of the more advanced functions, such as modelling.
Completely updated to cover the latest versions of Excel, including 2000, Bernard Liengme has also included new material on functions, statistics and the 'Solver' tool, as well as completely rewritten the section on charts. In addition, he has focused on: formulas; charts; curve-fitting; equation solving; integration; macros; statistical functions; logic functions; databases; macros. This new edition of an already indispensable guide is one that no scientist or engineer can afford to be without.
The best introductory book on Excel aimed specifically at scientists and engineers. * Covers the latest versions of Excel, including Excel 2000. * Incorporates changes due to feedback from readers * Contains extra functions and statistics.
Customer Reviews:
Expensive for this price........2002-10-17
While it would be useful for begineers, I find most of the concepts are raher short and simply presented. I think the amount of information given does not worth to that price. Especially, section regarding writting macros and prograaming are very limited and mostly in psude-code style which doesn't help you gain the experience of excel preograaming.
Practical use of spreadsheets.......2001-06-13
Very helpful examples and good focus on fomulas, equation solving and statistical functions. Report writing section was useful as well.
Good, but overpriced.......1999-10-21
Liengme's guide to Excel is clearly written, has good illustrations, and contains a variety of useful examples. However, I don't know where they get $40 for this thin paperback. Orvis' Excel book is more complete and a better value.
An excellent source of information........1998-11-12
Finally someone has written a very clear concise book explaining Excel in terms that are relevant to scientists and Engineers. For the Engineer who is forced to program in Excel this book is an excellent source of information.

Book Description
The primary purpose of this book is to provide a range of tested BASIC programs, which are useful for solving some of the problems frequently encountered in fisheries science and related resource assessment disciplines. Taken together, the ``package'' of programs may be considered to be a system, hence the name Fisheries Science Applications Systems (FSAS) which has been adopted as the title of the package.
In the first chapter, an overview of the FSAS system and its components is presented. The second chapter is a tutorial on data entry, data editing, and the use of a typical application program. The remaining text summarizes each application program, describing the analyses it performs and providing citations to the fisheries literature.
The programs are considered to be of potential value to the practicing fisheries scientist who has access to a personal computer. In addition, they will be of value to fisheries scientists and managers

Book Description
Hardware Component Modeling highlights the current status of the modeling of electronic components. It includes contributions from many of the leading researchers and practitioners in the field. The contents focus on four important topics.
Standards: Three chapters describe current developments in employing standards for the use of component libraries. A major part of these chapters provides an excellent introduction to VITAL (an IEEE standard), its application and some of the issues in using and implementing it. There are, however, other standards with a role to play and these are also covered.
Data Types: One chapter describes the latest techniques for using data types in modeling and simulation.
Model Generation: One chapter describes a model generator for reusable component models and another describes a generator which takes actual physical data as its source and generates a functional model.
Quality Assurance: Two chapters are devoted to improving the quality of models. One introduces a method for quantifying aspects of model quality and the other introduces quality concepts which can lead to an increase in model value through reuse and robustness.
Hardware Component Modeling is a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners involved in the process of modeling electronic components.

Book Description
This volume discusses the role of humans in transforming the coastal landscape. The book details the many ways beaches and dunes are eliminated, altered and replaced and the differences between natural landforms and the human artefacts that replace them. Emphasis is placed on the importance of retaining naturally functioning beaches and dunes in ways that achieve natural values while accommodating development and use. The issues dealt with in this book will be of interest to practising coastal engineers and research scientists, as well as to planners and managers of coastal resources at all levels of government. It will be of particular value to investigators planning for the future of coastal development under accelerated sea level rise. The book will also be useful as a reference text for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in geography, geology, ecology and other disciplines dealing with the interaction between science, technology and society.

Book Description
The recent development of theory on electron correlation in metals is explained in detail in this book. The strongest interaction between electrons in metals is the Coulomb repulsive force. This interaction gives rise to magnetism such as the ferromagnetism in Fe, Co and Ni. This interaction also induces the metal-insulator transition called the Mott transition. Surprisingly, recent studies confirm that the repulsive interaction is the origin of high temperature superconductivity in copper-oxide systems. Moreover, the number of new superconducting systems due to the electron correlation are rapidly increasing.
