Thorough, Practical Operational Measurements Guide .......2006-11-10

This book is vastly superior to any other I have read on the subject of measurements. One gets the impression that Will Kaydos definitely knows whereof he speaks. Early in the book, Kaydos provides a measurement model that is applicable to any kind of process and at any level - organisational, process, functional or individual. Several realistic examples permeate the book and two detailed case studies in the appendices add immensely to the value the reader can derive from it.

One of the best in my personal reference library.......2004-06-18

This is one of a handful of books on performance metrics I recommend to peers and clients. The author starts with one of the most cogent set of reasons for measuring performance that I've read. These reasons are compelling, reinforced with realistic examples, and clearly articulated. He then briefly discusses the art and science of measurement, and associated standards, techniques and methods. I especially liked his "Measuring the Unmeasurable" advice, which knocks down mental barriers and shows how you can, indeed, measure indicators that you may think are unmeasurable.

The approach he sets out is systematic and encompasses performance measurement in not only manufacturing, but in services and sales. In fact, Appendix C, "Implementing a Formal Selling Process", shows just how wide the scope of this book is. I've worked in technical pre-sales support and was thoroughly impressed with his approach.

Among the aspects of this book I especially like are the techniques he explains, the way you are lead through the development of an effective measurement system by identifying what to measure, implementing the system, analysis and interpretation, and actionable use of performance measures. Moreover, the way the author knits together a system based on multiple perspectives, taking into account strategic, customer, departmental and company-wide views is insightful. I also like the chapter on ensuring measures are showing an accurate picture, and the benchmarking information in Appendix A, "What Some Leading Companies are Measuring".

In my opinion this is a "must-have" book for anyone involved in operations, process improvement, or who has P&L responsibilities and wants to manage by fact - the right facts.

Useful guide.......2004-05-12

The book features procedures for identifying what to measure and specific steps readers can take to determine what to measure. It's a useful guide for figuring out what to measure for a specific organizational need, but requires some knowledge of measurement terminology. While I found it a useful guide as a performance and scorecard consultant, some of my clients found it a bit daunting. Good models and examples throughout.

Will Kaydos did actually a very good work. This book addresses to top management officers who wish to change to a more customer orientated approach and implement Performance Measurement in every aspect of their business. Well structured and easy to read with significant information on effective management. There are no equations or weird stuff in this book, because the author wishes to explain the core of this subject: how to implement performance measurement everywhere. This is a great book for industrial engineers, CEO's, Sales Managers, HR managers, Quality assurance officers and anyone involving with performance.

A terrific business improvement reference applicable to a wide range of business and their operations. Consultants and managers will especially value Kaydos' insights into the role of metrics in supporting culture change. The case studies are well chosen with clearly presented implementation examples and informative detail.

The continuous-time portfolio problem consists of finding the optimal investment strategy of an investor. In the classical Merton problem the investor can allocate his funds to a riskless savings account and risky assets. However, to get explicit results, it is assumed that the interest rates are deterministic and that the assets are default free. In this monograph both assumptions are weakened: The author analyzes and solves portfolio problems with stochastic interest rates and with defaultable assets. Besides, he briefly discusses how portfolio problems with foreign assets can be handled. The focus of the monograph is twofold: On the one hand, the economical problems are carefully explained, on the other hand their formal solution is rigorously presented. For this reason the text should be of interest to researchers with a Finance background as well as to researchers with a more formal background who would like to see how mathematics is applied to portfolio theory.

Wood is a biological structure well-adapted to external loading. It carries axial loads in a tree by longitudinal fibres and radial loads by rays; circumferential compressive growth stresses prevent the tree from splitting along the rays. It is shown that axial and lateral strength is highest at places of maximum loading. Also, growth stresses are distributed in a load-controlled way. The vivid style used by the authors avoids complex formulas, preferring many impressive and simple to understand drawings. They show how a tree is internally optimized and how the partial or global breakdown of this interwoven axial and radial optimization can lead to the different failure modes.

Good book on an important subject.......2005-08-23

Wood is one of the most important building materials known to man, and probably one of the few accessible to all humans regardless of geography or demographics. Whether it is an old man using a cane, a child climbing a tree, or people building houses, we all use wood for structural purposes. Because of this, the study of wood and how to use it in buildings, vehicles, and other structures is quite advanced. But why is wood so useful? The answer to this is that trees use it for the same purpose; structural support. This is the topic of this short and highly readable book.
The authors delves into the different shapes and sizes of trees, the distribution of branches on a tree, and of leaves on a branch. The book also describes how and why different trees have wood with different properties, how the wood in a tree changes with position in the tree and the tree's age. Finally the book examines how the wood in trees deflect, deform and grow to adjust to environmental stresses such as rainfall, snowfall, wind, cracks, lightning strikes, and shade. The text is quite easy to read for anyone who has taken college level physics or mechanics. There are a lot of figures and diagrams that illustrate the stresses trees have to withstand such as torque, load balance, wind resistance, swelling and contraction due to water absorption and loss, temperature gradients, etc...
Overall, this book is highly insightful, very readable, and quite interesting. I highly recommend it.

Beyond 'Understanding Wood'.......2000-04-26

'Wood, the internal optimization of trees' is an excellent book for those who want to understand how the mechanical properties of wood come about, but only for those readers who are somewhat theoretically minded. For the practical purpose of how to handle wood and to predict how a given piece of wood will behave R.Bruce Hoadley's 'Understanding Wood' is the book to read and to have. For those who want to go beyond the directly practical this is the book. It is reasonably easy to read, at least for those who remember some physics from high school, especially because it is lavishly illustrated with clarifying drawings. The book takes a look at the mechanical forces that trees are subject to and explains how the tree counters by optimizing its wood to deal with those forces. It does this at several levels, from the tree as a whole down to the orientation of microfibrils in the cell wall. By looking at a tree as a mechanical machine it complements explanations of a tree as a machine to transports fluids, such as put forth by Zimmerman e.a.

Note that this book is one of several by Mattheck e.a. which all have the same basic content, and even the same drawings, but which differ in the groups targeted. There is a very similar one aimed at those involved in tree upkeep, which shows how defects in trees can be diagnosed from looking at the tree, the patterns in the bark, etc.

However, this book is definitely the one to read for those primarily interested in wood, and its mechanical properties. It might well be destined to become a classic in its field!

This radical revision of Professor Bullen’s acclaimed and widely used text provides an introduction to modern seismological theory, with emphasis on both the physical models and the mathematical descriptions of earthquakes and their sources. The essential core of the earlier editions has been retained, particularly the tensor treatment of elasticity, seismic wave travel-time analysis and density in the Earth, although these parts of the text have been brought up to date and expanded. The new part of the book reflects on how the study of earthquakes, seismic waves and seismic risk has been broadened in the past two decades. Thus, this edition includes introductory theory of earthquake sources, seismic wave travel through complex geological zones and viscous and anisotropic media, vibrations of the whole Earth, strong-motion seismology and earthquake prediction and risk. There is an emphasis on statistical and numerical procedures and problems of resolution in inverse theory. Modern class exercises are to be found throughout. The book assumes some background in classical physics and mathematics, including simple differential equations, linear algebra and probability theory. It will be suitable for use in undergraduate courses in geophysics, applied mechanics and geotechnology and for graduate courses in seismology and earthquake engineering. In addition, it will serve as a reference text on seismological problems for professionals concerned with earthquakes, Earth structure and wave motion.

Bullen and Bolt write a book which is small, but packed with information. This is a good reference book to carry with you in the field or to stock on your overcrowded shelf.

Book Description

Southern belle BeBe Loudermilk loses all her worldly possessions thanks to a brief but disastrous relationship with the gorgeous Reddy, an "investment counselor" who turns out to be a con man. All that's left is a ramshackle 1950s motor court on Tybee Island.

Breeze Inn is a place where the very classy BeBe wouldn't normally be caught dead, but, with no alternative, she moves into the manager's unit, vowing to make magic out of mud. The work is grueling, especially dealing with the cantankerous caretaker, a fishing captain named Harry. With the help of Harry and BeBe's junking friend Weezie, she soon has the motel spiffed up and attracting paying guests.

Then there's a sighting of Reddy in Fort Lauderdale, and BeBe decides to go after him. She puts together a posse and heads south. The plan is to carry out a sting that may be just a little bit outside the law but that with any luck at all will retrieve BeBe's fortune and put the dastardly Reddy in jail where he belongs.

If you read the first book Savannah Blues and enjoyed it you will definately love the second in this series. I couldn't put it down...very fun read....PERFECT for the beach or sippin' tea on your porch swing....
