The process by which poor parents pass on their poverty and disadvantage occurs primarily during their children's earliest years of life, perpetuating an underclass, and in so doing impairing the basis for a fair and stable society. This intergenerational transmission of poverty (ITP) is a particularly powerful force in today's Latin America, where economies are in crisis and unequal distribution of income emblematic.

Escaping the Poverty Trap examines and proposes early childhood investment policies that could decisively change the prospects for the next generation of the poor in Latin America. Contributing authors include Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen and Gro Harlem Brundtland, director-general of the World Health Organization.

In examining the effects of family background on ITP in 16 Latin American countries, the study emphasizes that conception through preschool is the period when vulnerability to lifetime damage is greatest, but also when there is the most potential for cost-effective interventions to break out of that destructive cycle. Insufficient education is cited as the primal vector of poverty throughout the life cycle and across generations.

The authors find that interventions that offer quality childcare and complementary services not only provide a healthy and nurturing environment for children, but also open up opportunities for their parents to earn a better living. The book outlines basic principles to guide the design of early childhood care and development programs, including the need to empower parents, address all of children's unmet development needs, adjust to the local socioeconomic context, intervene preventively, make programs financially sustainable, and focus resources on households where the development outlook of children would most likely be improved.

A very well-argued and evidenced innovative approach to development. The book should be read by all development practitioners and everyone interested in poverty dynamics.
The book provides a lot of food for thought for decision-makers and technical experts. The text is pleasure to read as it is refreshingly free of development jargon.

A must read primer.......2003-11-29

The book will serve as an excellent introduction to the problems of intergenerational transmission of poverty. The anthology's lead article on Family Background and Intergenerational Poverty in Latin America (by Moran, Castaneda and Aldaz-Carroll) summarizes invaluable empirical data, and, although primarily concerned with early childhood care and development in Latin American countries, the Six Strategies recommended by Robert Myers will be just as applicable to similar problems of any rural community or inner city in the United States.
Escaping the Poverty Trap should be required reading in all college introductory courses on economic and human development, not just those focusing on Latin America. And like Amartya Sen's now classic work, Resources, Values and Development, this anthology should also remind policy makers that in order to break the culture of poverty, "family matters."

Going Down in La-La Land is a candid, sexy, and outrageously funny look at what an actor can-and will-do to survive in Hollywood. Where the interaction, social hierarchy, and manic personalities at the talent agency were unbearable; the porn industry was just plain mind-boggling. I would come to find out both environments had plenty of larger than life characters. The difference was in the porn world people actually treated each other better and lacked the big egos. Those involved were realistic about the kind of work they did, and that they were considered the bottom of the barrel by the rest of Tinseltown. Yet at least they were honest and up front about being money-grubbing pigs and users, which was more than I could say for the suits at the agency. It was sad but true; the dirty world of porn was nicer than the legit business world, whether it be a television network or Wall Street.

As far as taking my clothes off, I had no problem with it. I always said that if it came back to haunt me, I would tell the truth.

"I was poor, broke, and needed the cash," I would fantasize myself crying to an interviewer upon getting famous someday, my past being found out. Boo hoo, boo hoo.

Everyone has to pay the bills somehow. And if you are an artist of any kind, be it actor, writer, painter, or whatever, at times you had to be very creative to make ends meet.

Struggling to find his way back to the yellow brick road of stardom, Adam gets a first-hand education on the X-rated film industry and finds out what really goes on in the town's top talent agencies. But it's not long before he's reduced to working as a male prostitute, turning tricks with a billionaire businessman and getting a peek inside the closet of one of America's most beloved TV stars.

He stared bashfully at the ground. He had a very sweet and endearing quality that I found very attractive. It was certain that he was more intimidated with me than the other way around. I actually found him kind of sexy. His hair was thick and curly, and he wore it very short. His eyes were big and blue, and drooped just a bit, like those of a puppy dog. His build was stout and thick, like that of a maintenance man. He had a belly that bulged a bit over his pants, but nothing that hung over. And a barrel chest and burly arms offset his wide middle, so in reality he looked in proportion. It was a nice change from the cookie cutter, overly worked out bodies I saw all over town, and on the covers of the video boxes I shrink-wrapped every other day.

NOTHING NEW HERE.......2007-09-08

Despite the hype on the cover of this book, and an interview with the author in UNZIPPED, there is nothing hot or unexpected in this novel. In fact, there is nothing new...just typical, trite, and tired boy-comes-to-Hollywood-becomes-hustler...yada, yada. If you are in a pinch, this might entertain, but don't go out of your way to read it.

Hitting Bottom in LA-LA Land.......2007-09-06

Andy Zeffer takes up where Nathanael West left off in his 1939 landmark novel about Los Angeles, "The Day of the Locust." It was not a pleasant picture that West drew of the tragic, seamy underbelly of Hollywood. In this novel Zeffer tells the story of Adam Zeller who gets a taste for the Hollywood hedonistic, nihilistic life style as he dives into the world of porn performance, becomes an escort to the rich and famous, and has a wild sex life.
Zeffer is graphic and unsparing when he describes the sex scenes, but he also has a breezy, colloquial style with a good ear for dialogue. He tells his story crisply with a fast-moving pace and considerable humor.(Adam finds human doo doo in the entry way of his New York apartment building, and valet parkers break wind in his car before turning it over to him.)
Beneath all the glitter and the vivid sexual depiction is a bittersweet story in which the hero learns he's on a mission of discovery. It is, at heart, the tale of the wild ascent and bumpy ride, and then the fall of gay man to a point of redemption. Can a city built on dreams and success really destroy people, or is it that the people who go there get caught up in the tentacles of the devilry within them? Zeffer has told us how it feels to hit bottom and survive LA-LA Land. Highly recommended.

The dark side of Hollywood.......2007-07-02

This book was a fun summer read that showed the dark, seedy side of an actor's trials and tribulations while trying to break into Hollywood via the back door (no pun intended). I liked the main character Adam because he came across as very real and genuine in spite of the fact that many of the people around him were the exact opposite. My one complaint was that anti-Midwestern slurs would pop up from time to time and, as a Midwesterner, I was slightly offended! Still, a good read overall.

If you ever took a survey of English literature course in college, you probably heard the term "picaresque"--the adventures of a young rogue, living by his wits in a decadent society. Though it's unlikely that Andy Zeffer's Going Down in La-La Land will show up in a college curriculum, that definition fits it to a T.

Zeffer's hero, Adam Zeller, is a young actor who leaves New York for LA on a quest for artistic fulfillment, commercial success, and the chance to live in a place where people don't leave excrement in apartment lobbies. What he finds--and delivers to the reader--is a behind-the-scenes look at the seamy side of Hollywood, a world of gay porn, male hustlers, and the day-to-day struggle to find a job that pays the rent while not destroying the soul.

After a brief stint as a receptionist at a talent agency, Adam finds himself at the studios of HUNG Video. He begins as the lube guy, squirting the participants and supplying them with condoms. Soon he moves up to a solo effort in front of the cameras, then joins in a group effort called Bobby Steelhard's Hollywood Garage.

Zeffer has an outsider's eye for the ludicrous goings on in La-La Land. Adam's a witty narrator, and the sex scenes are hot at the same time as gently mocking the conventions of gay porn. On the set, he describes a visit to the makeup artist, whose duties are a little different from laying on foundation and eye shadow. "We continued to talk about idle crap while he worked on cleaning up my pubic area. Having someone shave your pubes all nice and neat was something that didn't happen every day. The guy just kept on carrying on conversation like he had done this hundreds of times, which he probably had."
