The problem solving guide gave excellent chapter sumarry for test review. The additional tips and explanations aided my understanding of the material and working through the problems showed practical applications of the material. I think it improved my class grade from a C to a high B. Highly reccomend it to students like me.

The Vol. 2 is not as good as Vol. 1.......2006-03-10

I received the book recently. Compared with its Vol. 1, this book is not as good. I've just gone over Chapters 14 and 15. The examples are not as clearly presented as the ones in Vol. 1. I have to say this book is not up to my expectations, but the book, of course, can still help.

The title, Survival Guide, is exactly as it means. This workbook, that accompanies `Intermediate Accounting' by Donald Kieso, is necessary to survive and understand intermediate accounting! The key is it gives you many more examples and probable situations to solve than the textbook could handle. I would not have done as well as I did in class without it!

Completing the workbook items really helps reinforce concepts and offers great practice for tests. The book is not perfect. There's an occasional typo, and I wish there was more space to write in the workbook, and I was expecting it to cost a bit less, but in my opinion the book is very worthwhile to use.

Intermediate Accounting.......2005-08-03

Haven't used this book yet. Will next semester. Volume I of this series was of great use to me. By practising the exercises my memory retention and understanding went a whole lot further. I would say this would be a worthwhile purchase.

The study guide is helpful when used along with the textbook. There is a summary of each chapter with plenty of T/F questions to determine if you understand the material from the chapters, and there are detailed explanations for false answers.

This book along with the Student Survival Guide was a great help to me. I just walked out of class with a 100 on my last test! Now for the final. Not near as nervous because these books have pushed me to remember the information that I normally wouldn't. Great buy!!

good reference.......2004-12-15

This was a pretty good study guide to go along w/ chapters 1-14 of kieso's intermediate accounting textbook (vol.1, 11th edition). Some of the lecture notes my prof. used were taken directly from the study guide - so there was some reptition. But there are also test questions such as T/F, multiple choice, and examples/self-tests for you to work on as you go through each chapter that helped out.

The text is pretty good and thorough for intermediate accounting - sometimes the study guide was a good help as far as summarizing ideas with key terms/key ideas in bold. The T/F questions and multiple choice helped as far as narrowing down important concepts and trying to gather what was really important - this is beyond the homework/and reading the text.

Overall - a pretty good supplement to the textbook and worth getting if you are serious about accounting/business/finance in the long run.

Outdated but still important.......2000-04-12

As this book was published in 1981 some of the technologies it examines as new developments are now commonplace. Also because of its age, many of the recent hot topics in this field - cloning espically - are not covered, or only briefly discussed as a faraway possibility. If you are reading this with the current science in mind, this can be a bit frustrating. The writing is very much the writing of scientists, and can be a bit dry to the average reader. (For more up-to-date and colorful analysis of these situations, try Barbara Katz Rothman.) However the issues raised in this book are still important and interesting. That the questions the women at this confernce were pondering have not been answered twenty years later speaks volumes for the complex and confusing issues regarding these technologies.

Covers a variety of topics in the evolution of primitive fishes. For example, a useful article considers the evolution of insulin in hagfish. The first pancreatic islets are found in cyclostomes where, for example, hagfish islets contain B and D (somatostatin) cells. In cartilage fish a distinct stomach and duodenum appear, as well as a true endocrine pancreas. In hagfish, during starvation glucose is consumed from skeletal muscle and liver glycogen, while during ingestion of foods resulting in increased glucose levels, insulin levels rise and promote lipid, protein and glycogen synthesis in skeletal muscle.

Certain interspecific hybrids of the fish Xiphophorus spontaneously develop melanoma induced by the derepression of the Xmrk oncogene. Xmrk is a recent duplicate of an orthologue of the mammalian epidermal growth factor receptor gene Egfr. In addition to a specific overexpression in melanoma, amino-acid substitutions in the extracellular domain leading to ligand-independent dimerisation and constitutive autophosphorylation are responsible for the tumorigenic potential of Xmrk. The Xmrk receptor induces several signal transduction pathways mediating cell proliferation and resistance to apoptosis and initiating dedifferentiation. Moreover, Xmrk upregulates the expression of the secreted protein osteopontin, inducing an autocrine loop possibly allowing invasion and survival in the dermis as a first step in malignancy. Hence, Xmrk is able to induce pathways essential for a transformed phenotype. Some of these events are equivalent to those found downstream of the mammalian Egfr, but others have clearly evolved differently or are specific for pigment cells. Xmrk is potentially hazardous, nonessential and located in a very unstable genomic region. Nevertheless, Xmrk has been maintained under purifying selection in divergent Xiphophorus species. Hence, Xmrk has probably a beneficial function under certain conditions. The analysis of this function is a major challenge for future research in the Xiphophorus model.

Snappy dialogue & endearing characters.......2002-01-14

Mary Jane Maffini hails from Sydney, Nova Scotia and currently lives in Ottawa with her spouse and "various neurotic pets." A graduate of Dalhousie University, she is a former librarian who broke into writing via the publication of numerous short stories, which garnered many awards. Her short story fiction has appeared in: Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Chatelaine, Storyteller, On-Spec, Over My Dead Body, as well as many anthologies. The Icing on the Corpse follows up the award winning Speak Ill of the Dead.

Camilla MacPhee, lawyer, embattled sister of three stiff-necked debutantes, and social crusader is once again on patrol as victim's advocate for Justice For Victims. One of her clients, Lindsey Grace, has just testified against Ralph Benning, ferocious wife batterer. But Canadian law put Ralph back on the streets in eighteen months. Using a skillful combination of snappy dialogue, endearing characters, and terrifying action, Maffini snares the reader from page one until the alarming denouement. Camilla stays in lovable character throughout the entire book, as women everywhere cheer her on.

Victims' advocate Camilla MacPhee lashes on her skates and scoots across the Rideau Canal in her second Ottawa adventure, this time on the trail of a serial batterer. A sucker for a cause but nobody's fool, she organizes a group to "stand on guard" for the criminal's threatened girlfriend. As the capital city gamely dons toques and parkas to celebrate its annual Winterlude, a suspicious ice sculpture has the police knocking on doors. Suddenly Camilla finds herself enmeshed in a complex plot involving blackmail and murder, making tracks in her clunky Canadian Sorel boots and looking over her shoulder.
