Do not take Managerial Accounting without this book.......2007-04-23

This book is what got me through managerial accounting in my MBA program. As a dyslexic mathphobe I was very nervous about taking an accounting class and I was not comforted at all by a professor who only seemed to speak in numbers and a textbook that confused even my friend - the CPA.

This book is clear, concise, and to the point and has tons of exercises/problems with a the answers fully worked out and explained. This book helped me get an A in my class - I highly recommend this book to everyone who needs help in managerial accounting.

Brush up on Part 2 of CMA with this product........2007-01-02

This book is great! It gives you really good examples of cost accounting problems. It includes easy to understand solutions in every chapter. I'm a current CMA candidate and this book helped understand many of costing procedures that I had difficulty grasping in college. Excellent review material!

This is a very bad book. I wish I could have seen it before I bought it. I agree with the two reviewers that stated that this book is repetitive. I have already put mine on sale. At least I could use the money to buy a good operational risk book.

Good first book to read if you want to understand the basics.......2002-02-11

This book describes key ideas of operational risk, and provides valuable insight on how to deal with it. Particularly useful is Delta-EVT, the author's methodology for measuring operational risk that separates the risk into two parts - the expected operating loss due to `normal' operations, and the unexpected loss resulting from breakdowns in control [King 2001]. As well, this is one of the first comprehensive books on operational risk and the author has provided a nice balance of background and reference information along with the key ideas that with a bit of effort any level of practitioner can understand and apply.

Disappointing: Repeating the same idea all along.......2002-01-25

This book could be half of its actual size. The author states his ideas in the first part and then just repeat them all along in the second part. For example, there are two chapters on extreme value theory, one in the first part and the other on the second part both telling basically the same story (and both very simplistic by the way). Perhaps he thinks that by repeating the ideas the reader would catch his message. The part of the book that it is not pure repetition waste space with the "most famous operational losses" with no further analysis but just stating them. There is also no indication on the author's bio whether he has any real-life experience in operational risk to write a book on the subject. Hence, his ideas to measure and model OR might just not work at all. The industry is still waiting for a good book in operational risk.

A Must-Have Book for Operational Risk.......2001-12-29

I couldn't recommend a better, more well written book on the subject of operational risk. It cuts right to the heart of exactly what is needed in the business world today - more responsible risk management that improves the bottom line as well. Tasked with the operational risk management responsibility in our organization, it seems clear to me that Dr. King's book is the definitive source for both practitioners like myself and academics (my former role). His ideas are thought provoking, provide a sound knowledge base, and build on our lessons learned from credit and market risk management. In the early days, too much precious time and resources were wasted on risk management activities that scratched only the surface. On behalf of myself and other risk management professionals, thank you Dr. King for your contribution of a sound framework for risk management measurement and modelling. I can assure you that we greatly look forward to your next book.

Disappointed.......2001-08-24

Actually I was quite disappointed. I did not expected it to be very quantitative but I think he is repeating himself all along. I'd rather have an idea explained once and clearly than 3 times, because at the 3 rd time I get bored and then I may miss something interesting. May be though he could not sell his book at such a price if it were shorter. Moreover, his approach to quant is more of a cooking receipe. I dont see the point of having a book with calculus without justification. Or you want it to be read by non quant and you don't put cooking receipe but only few numbers, or you want it to be more quanti and you don't put receipe but explanations. Anyway...it is a try on a non easy subject.

One of the three funniest novels that I ever read........2002-07-30

_I ordinarily do not read humorous novels more than once. The only exceptions would be _A Confederacy of Dunces_ By John Kennedy Toole and _The Big U_ by Neale Stephenson. I would not hesitate to put this book in that class.

_I get a sense here that Busch must have indeed "written what he knew" because it just comes across as so fresh and uncontrived. These are real people, in a real madcap Village world. You actually end up CARING about them, which is rare for a modern novel.

_Yes, I consider this book to be a "guilty pleasure", but that's because I grew up wanting to be an artist and a bohemian- and ended up an engineer in suburbia. At least in this book I can vicariously live an interesting and creative life around interesting and creative people....

The Truth and Nothing But the Truth.......2002-06-19

Charles Busch is the author and original star of Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, and this, his first novel, is basically the fictionalized account of the creation of that play. And it's not exaggerated at all, really, I mean it, really! Theatre people never exaggerate, right? It holds up--amusing for anyone who's ever worked in the theatre or has had anything to do with performance artists and/or drag queens. Memorable, outrageous but completely-believable characters (once you buy into the narrator's POV). Kind of an artistic thriller--will the show go on? Who's sleeping with whom? And why? Whose persona will Julian Young adopt next? Quite fun. I hesitate to label this as "summer reading," but I'd bring it to the beach and let the passers-by wonder what I was laughing at...

One of the Funniest Books I've Read.......2000-08-10

I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to have a good time. It is obviously based on Busch's own life, but that is what makes it so funny. He is one of the funniest, most gifted playwrites aound and his talent translates easily to the novel. I wanted this book to keep going. I still haven't found anything as hilarious since this was published.

Great Fun For Everyone!.......2000-08-09

Charles Busch's roman a'clef novel is great, great fun. A theatrical backstage romp, similar in style to Armistead Maupin's "Tales Of The City" series. Though not as much fun as seeing one of Busch's incomperable live performances (He is a truely brilliant comic actor, one of the most skilled I've ever seen!) it is still a joy from begining to end, and surprisingly touching as well. You can't spend time better than in the company of Mr. Busch. I'm buying extra copies to give to my friends, becuse I'm sick of loaning out mine!

Busch a better playright than novelist.......2000-05-13

Don't get me wrong--this was a fun read from start to finish--but it was obviously barely-disguised biography and not nearly as entertaining as its situations would suggest.

One reader compares this to "Blue Heaven," and yes, the tone is similar, but the accomplishment is much, much smaller. It's a fun read, a light read, but not a brilliantly-written read (whereas "Blue Heaven" makes one want to read out each sentence, the prose is so good), and the engaging plot is also not nearly as wire-tight as Keenan's.

I hope for future books from Mr. Busch, though--now that he's got his autobiography out of his system, we can see what he accomplishes with his imagination set on full tilt.

Note: a 3 star ranking from me is actually pretty good; I reserve 4 stars for tremendously good works, and 5 only for the rare few that are or ought to be classic; unfortunately most books published are 2 or less.
