Book Description
Lind/Marchal/Wathen: STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES IN BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, 12/e is a market best seller due to the comprehensive coverage of statistical tools and methods delivered in a student friendly, step-by-step format. The text is non-threatening and presents concepts clearly and succinctly with a conversational writing style. All statistical concepts are illustrated with solved applied examples immediately upon introduction. Modern computing tools and applications are introduced, though the text maintains a focus on presenting statistitcs concepts as applied in business as opposed to technology or programming methods. The twelfth edition continues as a ‘students’ text with increased emphasis on interpretation of data and results.

A good book but with too many mistakes.......2006-12-09
I have been using a few editions of this book in the last few years and I am going to use it again soon but the 12th edition had too many mistakes. Later I saw the corrections for the mistakes on the book's site but even the corrections had a few mistakes.
Great Book.......2006-08-29
I used this text in my MBA stats class and have found it to be very informative and useful. I found the examples for Excel and Minitab to be well written and of great use. I would recommend this book for anyone who uses statistics on a frequent basis or simply would like a good reference manual in their library.
12th ed. has problems.......2006-05-04
The 12th edition of this book contains a surprising number of errors. I am currently using this book for a statistics course in an MBA program. We are twelve chapters into the book now and in most every chapter I have found a mistake; more often than not there are multiple mistakes. What is worse is that the majority of the mistakes are in the practice problems which are where the student learns to apply the skills. This serves to create confusion and frustration on the student's part. Some of the mistakes are sloppy editing while others more significant are providing wrong information. The editors need to take another look at this book and the authors should also take note.
Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics with CD-Rom.......2005-10-19
The book I received did not have the cd the book was in used condition not good as stated. It was ok. It would have been nice to have the cd. It needs to be a little more detailed.
Good not Great.......2005-09-24
This was an ok buy...first of all it was already quite used and therefore not really worth much.....it was the correct item I ordered and it came in a timely fashion. Overall about 3.5 stars.

Book Description
The issue of costing and pricing in the telecommunications industry has been hotly debated for the last twenty years and we are still wrestling over the cost of the local exchange for access by interexchange and competitive local exchange carriers, as well as for universal service funding. With the advent of competition, the historical costing schemes had to change. Federal regulators wanted to ensure that monopoly rates did not subsidize competitive offerings.
As a result, various costing methodologies were devised to allocate costs among the dominant carriers' services. The issue of costs can be summarized as two-fold: the quantitative determination of the level of costs and the proper attribution of those costs. Both are fraught with questions. The amount of costs, for instance, can vary from book costs to marginal costs. The attribution of costs can vary from those that are directly attributable to those that are joint and common. Hence, the need for costing theories and models.
The industry is constantly in search of theories and models that more accurately reflect the underlying costs of service. It is in this light that the papers have been compiled for
The New Investment Theory
of Real Options in Telecommunications. Real options theory attempts to consider management's flexibility in valuation analysis and corrects the deficiencies of the traditional discounted present-value and decision tree analyses. This book sets forth an introduction and overview of the subject, and then provides the reader with a primer on real options. The volume highlights the controversies that surround the application of real options in the telecommunications industry; however, the editors have effectively separated the issues of application from those of interpretation.

Statutory slave book.......2004-10-29
This book is only for all of you who are slave citizens to a corrupt political system which not only dictates the way you must live but also denies you of all your sovereign constitutional rights and immunities as proposed by the great founding fathers of this now impoverished nation. I am sovereign and as such, I have never been in receipt of any contractual document which requires me to abide by Statutory rules under an administrative heading. This book focuses exclusively on the surface level deludings of the general poverty stricken public who would allow themselves to be socialized and institutionalized by a government who only sees its citizens as slave laborers and chattel. I would not even attempt to resell this book, in the fear that someone else will continue to be deluded as the fact that the courts have power over them only if they let them! "pleadings sufficient to enact jurisdiction". The court never had juridiction over you until you plead, and that is the same as saying "yes, your honor, I would like to give you permission to procecute me to the fullest extent of your statutory administrative rules which will NOT include the Constitution of the United States of the America and its sovereign rights and immunities.
This book was written by an attorney, now judge, and as such is filled with information concerning her lawyer craft. As a member of the B.A.R. (british accredited registry), she is a card carrying club member who has loyalty only to her other attorneys in the club, including the attorney that sits four feet off the floor and wears a black robe.
Make no mistake about it, we live in the Matrix and this book was written by one of its Agents. Reader beware!

Book Description
Hailed by the Wine Advocate as "perhaps the most gifted of all wine writers writing today," Jancis Robinson has been voted the Wine Writer's Wine Writer by her peers, dubbed "the undisputed mistress of the kingdom of wines" by France's Madame Figaro, and won the 1995 Wine Literary Award of the
Wine Appreciation Guild. Holding the prestigious rank of Master of Wine, Robinson lectures and judges all over the world, and recently hosted a ten-part PBS series Jancis Robinson's Wine Course. She also edited The Oxford Companion to Wine, which won every major wine book award in 1995--including
the Julia Child Cookbook Award (Wine, Beer, or Spirits) and The James Beard Book Award--and which has been praised by Frank Prial in The New York Times as "easily the most complete compendium of wine knowledge assembled in modern times," and by Anthony Dias Blue as "one of the definitive reference
books on the subject."
Now, in Jancis Robinson's Guide to Wine Grapes, Robinson provides wine aficionados with a handy, on-the-spot guide to the most central aspect of wine making--the grapes themselves. Here are over 850 grapes, ranging from such widely acclaimed vines as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Muscat, Pinot
Noir, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc, to economically important if less distinguished vines such as Airen, Grenache, Muller-Thurgau, Trebbiano, Syrah, and Rkatsiteli. Robinson offers a fact-filled introduction--discussing everything from rootstocks and wine blends, to vine pests and disease--and
glossary of technical terms (from botrytis and carbonic maceration, to fanleaf and foxy, to skin, sugars, tannins, and yield). She then examines the world's grape varieties in alphabetical order, describing the basic characteristics of the wine produced by the grape (dry, sweet, high or low acidity,
the bouquet), its likely quality, the regions that produce the best wine, and, if a blended wine, the blends that yield the best results. (As an added guide to the wine a grape might produce, the Guide includes an easy-to-use visual aid: a horizontal bar with a band which shows the range of quality,
from ordinary to superb.) Robinson also shares much fascinating wine history, her deep insight into the wine industry, and more important, her own judgment on a wine. And Robinson does not hedge in judging a wine: discussing Carignan, France's most planted red wine, she comments "Its wine is high in
everything--acidity, tannins, color, bitterness--but flavor and charm. This gives it the double inconvenience of being unsuitable for early consumption yet unworthy of maturation." And for Trebbiano, the most planted white grape in Italy (and with Ugni Blanc, which is the name of the grape in
France, the second most planted white grape in the world), Robinson notes "the word Trebbiano in a wine name almost invariably signals something light, white, crisp, and uninspiring."
Perhaps most important, this portable book can be used in the store as a buying guide. With Robinson's Guide, simply find the grape variety on the label--or, if not listed, turn to Robinson's unique Grapes Behind the Names appendix in the back--look up the entry on that grape, and you will
discover everything you need to know to make an informed decision to buy or pass. With Jancis Robinson by your side, you can evaluate a bottle of wine on the spot, no matter where, when, or by whom it has been produced.

If you don't know wine grapes, you will!.......2004-02-10
Everything you ever wanted to know, and everything you needed to know about grapes!
Brilliant, of course!.......1999-09-22
What can you say about the most comprehensive encyclopaedia of wine grapes written by the world's foremost expert on the subject, when that person also happens to be a clear and charming writer as well? If you want to know about grapes, find out from the woman who has offered her entire cellar to the person who can outstrip her knowledge on the subject. Wonderful!
Great view of the grapes.......1997-02-12
Successor to Robinson's large-format "Vines, Grapes and Wines," this delightful little book sorts out the world of wine not geographically, as encyclopedias usually do, but on the basis of grapes. Chock full of information about grapes from the commonplace (Chardonnay) to the bizarre (Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso), this pocket-size book is a must for the wine-trivia lover or the serious wine fancier
Book Description
As more and more wine consumers become grape conscious, they identify and buy wine according to its grape—and this is the guide to help them choose. Written by one of the world’s most highly respected wine writers, Vines, Grapes, & Wines covers the numerous grape varieties that are grown internationally, examining an extensive range of the varieties that the enthusiast is likely to encounter both as a plant and as a wine style. Each one is described in its geographical context, and there are hundreds of inspiring illustrations throughout.

Still a valuable resource.......2006-11-10
While not as exhaustive as "Oz Clarke's Encylopedia of Grapes", this does contain information that Clarke's book does not. Before the three sections on grapes (Classic Varieties, Major Varieties, Other Varieties) there is a section entitled "Where Grapes Grow and Why" that provides valuable insight. Some of the information is dated, however, and that should be a caution to anyone reading this for use as a text. For example, the book uses a 1979 "census" of the varieties grown in Champagne. The figures quoted in 1979 are far different than those today. So be careful if you quote this book with specific regard to data.
A reference book no-one should be caught without.......2003-08-16
Simply put, this is one of the classics and a must-have for anyone with more than a passing interest in wine. Although it is several years old now and certain parts are out of date in terms of trends and the planting patterns of some younger wine-producing countries, the important bits are still are relevant as ever. The most comprehensive and invaluable book on grape varieties, purely for its reference fact value. Oz Clarke and Margaret Rand have written a more up-to-date bok covering the same topic, but that is less focussed on the grape itself as the wines made around the world with the particular grape. If you can have both, all the better, but if you had to choose one, this one would be it.
Fascinating.......2002-09-02
This is a fascinating, well-written book, sure to be of interest to anyone wanting to deepen their knowledge of what's in their wine glass. It's a perfect companion piece to Johnson and Robinson's _Wine Atlas_. The bulk of the book is devoted to descriptions of "classic," "major," and "other" varieties, with the first two categories getting detailed treatment. There's also a section on "Where grapes grow and why" and some very interesting maps and analyses of great vineyards (e.g., Chateau Margaux and the Rutherford Bench).
One minor caveat is that the book doesn't seem to have been revised since it first appeared in 1986. So some of the "sociological" parts of the text (e.g., where specific varietals are being grown, and comments on their popularity) are becoming increasingly out of date, especially for the New World. But it's kind of interesting to be reminded that in the mid-1980s Syrah (aka Shiraz) enjoyed only "very limited popularity" (p. 90).
Deep perspective.......2001-10-05
Jancis Robinson has long been one of the established authorities on wine. I once watched her and Oz Clark in a wine tasting 'contest' on television. They were an even match with scores of almost 100% on vineyard, price, year, quality etc. I've also watched Robinson's television series on wines and her knowledge and enthusiasm seem to know no bounds.
In 'Vines, Grapes and Wines' Jancis Robinson puts this enthusiasm and knowledge to good use, producing 280 large format pages of unadulterated information and pictures. It's clear she wants her readers to know not just about the wine itself, but about the region, the soil, the climate, the vintners, the wine's history.
This is not an cozy weekend read, it's much more a reference book that gives both pleasure and information, but well worth the investment for any serious wine buff.
Detailed and pretty interesting.......2000-03-01
This book is incredibly informative. I often re-read sections because you cannot absorb all the information at once. Robinson's writing is clear, but sometimes the details (especially the history sections) are dry. I think of this as almost a text book but a readable text book with great pictures!

Book Description
This completely revised and updated version of the original Russian edition contains many results based on original papers by the authors. It will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students for its simple and clear description of the theory of propagation and polarization of cosmic radiation, and also to researchers in astronomy and astrophysics who will find formulae given in explicit analytical form useful for interpretation of observations.
This unique book offers an in-depth study of the effects of anisotrophy and nonuniformity of cosmic media on the polarization and propagation of stellar and nebular radiation. The physical processes of propagation and polarization of radiation are considered in detail, and a general theory is presented for cases of circumstellar and interstellar media and stellar atmospheres. Special attention is paid to cosmic plasma in strong magnetic fields and gaseous-dust cosmic media, as anisotrophy of such media determines many important effects of propaga

excellent! well researched and written........1999-09-02
Cobble has written an invaluable history book about a large segment of the twentieth century workforce that would have otherwise been overlooked and forgotten. Waitresses have been ubiquitious and invisible at the same time. This book speaks to gender, class, ethnic, and work issues. It is written in a style that is informative AND interesting throughout. The historical research and organization of the book is superb. If you didn't know you were interested in this topic, the minute you start reading Cobble's book you will find out otherwise.

Food and Love.......2005-04-07
I just loved Dishing It Out. The characters have drive and energy, and wow, the chemistry between them! Let's face it, they can Dish It Out--and Take It. And the food. And the wine. I think I gained a few pounds reading it, but it's worth it.
Book Description
This study challenges the uncritical equation of advancement with success. As a participant observer at a family-style restaurant in New Jersey, Greta Paules reveals the strategies that experienced waitresses employ to improve their own positions rather than aspiring toward management. Through the voices of some aggressive, determined, tough, and resilient women, Paules confronts stereotypical characterizations of waitresses.
Paules finds that certain unique features of the restaurant industrythe tipping system, chaotic work environment, chronic shortages of labor and supplies, and the manager's role as a fill-in manallow waitresses to manipulate their work environment to protect their own interests. The downgrading of the managerial role in this restaurant has rendered advancement meaningless. Knowing that the "help wanted" sign is permanently posted, the waitresses refuse to submit to management's dictates, to "take junk" from rude or hostile customers, or to internalize the negative self-image usually associated with waitressing.
The colorful and often amusing comments by the women Paules interviewed indicate that they have developed an arsenal of subtle but undeniably effective tactics to combat the exploitive elements of the job, to maximize tips, and to secure the boss's attention to their needs.

Dishing Out the Goods.......2000-04-13
The book, which I read for a feminism class, actually turned out to be one that I liked. The book focuses on a small, truck-stop restaurant called Route. The book tells stories of women's work in the restaurant and everyday problems that they face.
Most people never realize some things about waitresses if they've never been one. For example, waitresses' minimum wage is about 3 dollars less than that of normal jobs. They are expected to make up the difference in tips. After reading material such as this, sympathy for waitresses will go out even more. These are the same people that have to put up with rude and picky customers.
Managers seem to have it almost worse. Although, managers are usually thought of as having a higher and better position, this is very untrue in the restaurant business. Managers get minimum wage, but no tips, sometimes making less than the waiters. And because the turn-over rate is so high for managers, they've often work fewer time than the waitresses, which makes them seem as less of an authoritative figure. And, the manager has to deal with personnel problems and fill in for anyone who doesn't show up for work, or who quits on the spot. It's actually much tougher than one would think.
The books tells of how much waitresses put up with and the low wages that the make. I would recommend this book, if just for that fact that it opens up people's eyes to the fact that waitresses really do depend on tips - so don't stiff them. It's also a wonderful book to read just for enjoyment because it keeps your attention with different stories and interviews of several ladies, so in that sense, it's almost more of a story than a boring book of research.
