Book Description
As the globalization of financial markets continues, we urgently need to understand the crises that have plagued these markets and the policies best suited to preventing such crises in the future. In this book, a prominent group of economists and policymakers blend conceptual analysis and policy discussion in seven well-integrated papers, analyzing the nature of capital flows, alternative exchange-rate regimes, and the roles of international financial institutions.
After a guided tour by the editor and a historical exploration, some of the world's leading theorists and policy analysts examine the benefits and pitfalls of capital movements and controls. In the second portion, papers examine the recent experiences of Argentina and Mexico, with Charles Calomiris—whose proposals for a new world financial architecture have elicited wide attention—contributing a response. The volume concludes with a roundtable discussion of the report of the International Financial Institutions Advisory Commission, in which the chair of the commission, Allan H. Meltzer, both comments on the report and responds to questions about it.
The material presented here will become a standard reference for analysts, policymakers, and the interested general public.

Book Description

Good, but dated.......2007-01-06
I found Berra's presentation to be solid and straightforward. However, as Berra himself noted, the scientific outlook changes to incorporate new evidence. Since the publication of this book, science has indeed marched onward. The Origins of Life section seems particularly dated, since it does not cover the "RNA World Theory" which is now widely accepted based on evidence of the last decade or two. Science has advanced in other ways as well, with more transitional fossils (Tiktaalik, for example) and plenty of molecular evidence, all of it compatible with and supporting the theories of evolution.
Meanwhile, even Creationism has evolved. Berra took on "Creation Science," the religion pretending to be science of the 1970s and 1980s. Since the 1987 supreme court decision of Edwards v. Aguillera, Creationism has been repackaged as "Intelligent Design." Basically, Intelligent Design leaves out the overtly Biblical bits such as a 6000 year old universe and the flod of Noah, and dresses up other bits in new clothing, such as Behe's "irreducible complexity" and Dembski's "complex specified information" numerology, which are both re-upholstered versions of Paley's watch. If you are looking for refutations of ID, you should find a newer book.
This is a fine book, and the outdated material is my only reason for downrating it.
OK high-school-level intro.......2006-09-06
The intent of this book is to present the facts and arguments in the debate about creationism versus evolution. It does a reasonably good job of introducing the basic arguments in this debate in a historical context, and then basically states the currently accepted theory of evolution. It also shows how the legal debate is focused on the political issue regarding public school curriculum.
This book is not an even-handed exploration of the debate (which would be hard to do in any case). Nor does it offer compelling arguments for either side.
A Good Basic Introduction to the Subject.......2006-07-07
Although now more than a decade and a half old "Evolution and the Myth of Creationism" by Ohio State University zoology professor Tim M. Berra is still a useful introduction to the basic facts of evolution. Written for a general audience, and at a level understandable to high schoolers, it presents a useful overview of the evolution/creationism dispute. Berra's goals are simple: to present the scientific case for evolution to the "open minded reader who does not understand the technical issues of evolution but would like to, who sees everywhere the signs of bitter philosophical and educational debate; but does not know what to make of it, or who to believe" (p. ix). With an emphasis on brevity, only 144 pages of text and some really excellent illustrations, Berra presents the scientific pursuit of the origins of humanity, in the process offering compact explanations of population genetics, the fossil record, case histories of bacteria drug resistance and sickle-cell anemia, the Big Bang and the evolution of the universe, and a very useful summary of current views on the human evolutionary experience.
Berra is an unrelenting evolutionist, insisting that from a scientific perspective there is no debate between evolution and creationism, or as it is called in its current incarnation "intelligent design." Evolution, he comments, has the self-correcting underpinning of the scientific method and is accepted by virtually all who seriously study the subject. Creationism is a faith statement not based on any scientific evidence whatsoever and not testable through the scientific method. Berra notes that only a tiny minority of the Americans accept the creationism argument, and that many with deeply-held religious conceptions find no conflict between science and religion. "Creationists, for the most part," he insists, "are fundamentalist Christians whose central premise is a literal interpretation of the Bible and a belief in its inerrancy" (p. viii). In spite of their small numbers creationists are vocal, domineering, and political savvy at getting their belief system into far too many science curricula. They have asserted, although it is a fundamentally flawed belief, that there is a scientific controversy and that both sides should be taught in science classes. Recently, U.S. President George W. Bush made this assertion; never mind that there is no legitimate controversy, a fact that any reader of this book will come to appreciate fully.
I read this book so that I could more readily answer questions about the origins of the universe and life in the universe in my capacity as a curator at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. We have received an increasing number of questions about intelligent design from visitors to the museum, and the scientific arguments for the "Big Bang," the expanding universe, and the possibilities of life beyond Earth have received sustained criticism from those who embrace intelligent design. While there is some information on this subject in "Evolution and the Myth of Creationism" the focus of this book is on natural history, the fossil record, dinosaurs, and human evolution. It is a useful introduction to this material, although a little outdated now, but for questions of cosmology readers will want to review other works such as "The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality" (2004) and "The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory" (2003), both by Brian Greene or "The Cosmic Landscape: String Theory and the Illusion of Intelligent Design" (2005) by Leonard Susskind.
Good Statement of The Facts and Exposing Creationism.......2006-03-21
I purchased this book two weeks ago. This is a very interesting book which outlines the scientific method step by step. The book also discounts the arguments presented by creationists. Dr. Berra's book is very insightful and shows the logical progression/evolution of all life on the planet earth.
Why is this belief accepted as logical?.......2006-01-27
If I were an evolutionist, I would be able to tell you is this book was any good, but I am not.(The only reason I rated this book is because Amazon wouldn't let me skip that step). I just wanted to inquire on why so many people can accept this belief that life so complex as the human race, and any other living being for that matter, could just happen because of one little cell having the desire to become something that could funtion as we do. The father of evolution himself said that the human eye was to complex to have evolved, and because of our eye's amazing capabilities to focus to light and colors and many other things, he said the theory of evolution was absurd, and he actually said absurd! If anybody can give me some logical reasons why I and many others should believe the theory of evolution, please post them.

Book Description
This book is a comprehensive survey of most of the theoretical and experimental achievements in the field of quantum estimation of states and operations. Albeit still quite young, this field has already been recognized as a necessary tool for research in quantum optics and quantum information, beyond being a fascinating subject in its own right since it touches upon the conceptual foundations of quantum mechanics. The book consists of twelve extensive lectures that are essentially self-contained and modular, allowing combination of various chapters as a basis for advanced courses and seminars on theoretical or experimental aspects. The last two chapters, for instance, form a self-contained exposition on quantum discrimination problems. The book will benefit graduate students and newcomers to the field as a high-level but accessible textbook, lecturers in search for advanced course material and researchers wishing to consult a modern and authoritative source of reference.

A Year in the Merde.......2007-09-26
The central character 'Paul West' has been headhunted by a company in Paris - his mission - to market and oversee the development of a chain of English Tea Houses. Little did he know that the 'City of Love' (in it's own unique way) was expecting him. Like countless thousands who came before him, Paul encountered the frustrations of french culture.
An hilarious romp. Stephen Clarke writes in a smooth and entertaining way transporting us to a place deep in the heart of Paris. There is something here for everyone including romance, deception, espionage, and lots of 'merde'.
I've got to check out that underwear........2007-09-24
In March, I read A Year in the Merde by Stephen Clarke which is a slightly exaggerated account of the Englishman Clarke's year in France to open a set of British tea shops. I have not laughed so hard and so often while reading a book as I did during the first quarter of this one. The entire thing is brilliant, but the opening scenes and the language miscommunications are laugh-out-loud funny and it sheds a strange strange light on life in Paris. An excerpt:
"My good friend Chris told me not to come to France. Great lifestyle, he said, great food, and totally un-politically correct women with great underwear. His theory was that the French are like the woman scorned. Back in 1940, they tried to tell us they loved us but we just laughed at their accents and their big-nosed General de Gaulle, and ever since we've done nothing but poison them with our disgusting food and try to wipe the French language off the face of the earth. That's why they built refugee camps yards from the Eurotunnel entrance and refuse to eat our beef years after it was declared safe. It's permanent payback time, he said. Don't go there. Sorry, I told him, I've got to check out that underwear."
The Work Year Starts in September.......2007-09-18
Paul West starts his one year contract in Paris. Every French person knows that the work year does not start in January, but in September. September is when Parisians get back to their desks and when every new project from a new hairdo to a nuclear power plant gets under way. So at 900 AM on September 1st, Paul West was standing a hundred yards from the Champs-Elysees. West is about to begin a new job and what catches his attention is that there are people about him who are kissing. Somehow he finds his new employer's building.
Paul West has come to Paris to admire un-politically correct women with great underwear. No, no. Actually West has been brought to Paris to help open a chain of British tea rooms. It's just that West is 27 and has raging hormones and has not gotten past the first chapter of a Berlitz course on French. One would think from the adept way that he handled the initial meeting with his staff that West might not spend a year in the merde.
But West knows how to commit a faux pas. First there is Christine who is about to marry someone else. Then there was Alexa. How does a guy impress a girl when complaining about doggie merde? Then there is the boss's daughter who invites West to share her apartment. Of course, one morning the boss arrives to visit his daughter and finds West. And then the daughter walks out of her bedroom wearing next to nothing.
Didn't West take a job to open British tea rooms and not to chase babes? Do babes and tea rooms mix? Yes, they do in the clever resolution of this novel by Stephen Clarke.
Funny in an "Animal House" sort of way.......2007-09-13
This book is a memoir of a British man hired by a French company to develop a chain of English Tea Shops. We are taken through the first year of the author's relocation to France and his emersion in the French "culture", dating scene, work ethic, food, politics and corruption.
It's hard to rate this book because I find myself in the unusual situation of enjoying the book but not really liking it's author! I hope Stephen Clarke just looks old for his age in the photo on the book jacket, because youth can be the only acceptable excuse for his attitude throughout his stay in France. Or maybe it's just a British thing, the sarcastic, critical view of every person, place, thing and experience this man has. To go to France and spend a good part of the book making fun of the way many French speak English and paint us a picture of himself walking to work each day with plastic bags on his feet because he can't seem to avoid stepping in all the dog "merde" along the way, is funny, yes, but also annoying and a bit offensive. And don't get me started on his attitude toward women! If he was any older than mid twenties during his experience, he needs some therapy. Yet I give it 4 stars because I couldn't put it down and it made me laugh.
Lots of fun!!!.......2007-09-11
I opened this book expecting it to be...well "merde." But surprisingly this book was hard to put down. Not only was it funny on several different levels (some stupid, some ridiculous, and some political), the plot kept me intrigued and left me wanting to read the sequel.
If you have ever traveled extensively throughout France or had the chance to live there for any amount of time like I have you will be splitting your sides over the humor Stephen Clarke brings to all the situation his main character Paul West finds himself in because it is all true and you will more than likely have experienced it yourself. This should be on the list for all students who are going to live in France. A humorous look on all real-to-life situations abroad. All and all this book was tons of fun!
Product Description
