Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for a beginner.......2006-12-16

Recently I decided to try short-term trading. Soon I realise that I need to learn more. What is going on behind bid/ask postings, how to read and interpret Level II quotes, what is Naqdaq TotalView, what advance platforms are available today, etc? So I went to local bookstore and browsed through the section. Didn't find anything satisfactory so bought this book as a temporary solution. After an hour of reading I decided to write my first book review on Amazon.com. This is simply the best book I could hope to find on the subject: precise, structured, brief yet informative, state-of-the-art information. Excellent book overall. I highly recommend this book for beginners and may be even more experienced traders that didn't keep up with the latest advances. My only complain is that the indexing is not detail enough.

5 out of 5 stars MUCH Better than first edition.......2005-11-11

New edition just out. More sensible approach, and updated. Definitely worth the money, especially for new traders.

3 out of 5 stars It does have a few nuggets ... How ever..........2005-09-27

This particular book is fine as a general reference on the stock market, but frankly beginners will need more concrete and to the point strategies to make it as online stock traders.

The reality is that the stock market doesn't care if you are a beginner. It will gladly take your money away if you don't know what your doing. So the bottom line is, you better be PREPARED before you even think about making your first trade.

Stock trading is a very competitive field and in order to succeed you need to FOCUS on a set of simple strategies that you can implement without hesitation.

This game is all about buying and selling according to your set ups. So the clearer your set ups are, the easier for you can be to make a profitable decision.

Hopefully some sites on the web do offer more relevant and updated stock trading information. One of those sites is Sharp Trades ( SharpTrades com )

They focus mainly on short term momentum stock trading strategies, that in my opinion are easier to implement than many other technical systems outhere.

Stock trading doesn't have to be complicated as many people perceive. But you do need to follow a well organized set of rules and tactics, that once you master them, you can aspire to replicate profitable trades with consistency.

5 out of 5 stars Good first book on day trading.......2005-03-09

If your stock market experience is limited, this book will serve as a good introduction. The material is basic and presented in an easily understood format.

Sorry, but this book appears to have been written by a wanna be writer whose style---if you can call it that---is so blatantly irritating, condescending, and ridiculous that its facetiouseness distracts from any worth the book might otherwise provide which is minimal at best. Almost every paragraph contains a silly lead in to the next as if the writer is trying to hold your hand and help you 'get through' the material. Stuff like, 'ok, we're almost there now!' and 'I know you probably want to get right to the good stuff, but first, let's get a few of the harder points over with!....' Still with me? Both the writer and publisher should be pilloried for presuming the public is THAT dumb. You guessed it: don't buy this rubbish. And while we're at it, probably the only other book that's just as bad as this one for silliness is Toni Turner's.

      Book Description

The industrialized world has recently witnessed a dramatic increase in the volume of international capital movements, in the forms of borrowing and lending, bond transactions and foreign direct investment. Many non-OECD countries have also embarked on extensive programs of capital market liberalization. Papers in this volume--the proceedings of a CEPR joint conference with the Bank of Israel and Tel Aviv University's Pinhas Sapir Center for Development--examine the implications of these developments for economic fluctuations and fiscal and monetary policies under alternative exchange rate regimes, as well as other topics of contemporary interest.

                          Book Description

The atmospheric, hydrologic, and terrestrial components of the earth's systems operate on different time and space scales. Resolving these scaling incongruities as well as understanding and modeling the complex interaction of land surface processes at the different scales represents a major challenge for hydrologists, ecologists and meteorologists alike. This book presents the contributions of hydrologists, meteorologists, and ecologists to the first IHP/IAHS George Kovacs Colloqium on global hydrology and climate change. It deals with time and space scale variations with reference to several topics including soil water balance, ecosystems and interaction of flow systems, and macroscale hydrologic modeling. This book will be of great use to researchers, engineers and forecasters with an interest in space and time scale variability.

                          Book Description

A unique introduction to the many facets of electronics guided by industrial rather than academic practice, Gateways into Electronics relies on timeless principles rather than special methods and quickly provides the reader with the tools to explore the literature quantitatively and design simple instruments with assurance. It is thus an invaluable resource for scientists and engineers seeking to understand and develop applications of electronics in their fields.

Covering linear systems, circuit theory, operational amplifiers, semiconductor devices, feedback systems, and digital circuits at a level accessible to anyone with a good grasp of elementary calculus and the bare bones of physics, this comprehensive work also offers clear and compact discussions of generalized functions, Laplace and Fourier transforms, the electromagnetic foundations of circuit theory, transmission lines, modulation and detection, random processes and noise, and signal recovery.

Gateways Into Electronics is supplemented by nearly 500 figures and by carefully crafted examples and exercises that extend the material provided in the text or use it in a new context. Results are clearly stated, and thus provide immediate feedback as well as future reference.

                          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I agree with Mr. Hill.......2007-05-27

I'm also continually impressed with the high level of the material here---many fine topics and pertinent details not easy to find elsewhere. I wonder what happened to this guy---I have a feeling that he didn't know how to play academic politics as well as he knew physics.

When a very bright friend of mine, with a doctorate in mathematical physics from Cambridge, asked me for a good book from which he could learn more about electronics, I presented him with a copy of Dunn.

I am happy to see that Wiley is keeping it in print. It should be much better known.

5 out of 5 stars Winfield recommends this book.......2006-06-23

I'm surprised to see no customer reviews for this book. I have enjoyed my copy for years, and often recommend this book to others (assuming they already have a copy of The Art of Electronics, of course :-).

Peter Dunn has a unique gift for illustrating the engineering theory in complex topics of analog-circuit design, in an entertaining way. The book is filled with short vignettes covering a wide range of targeted subjects. Recommended.

                              Book Description

Work-at-home dad, devoted husband, aspiring screenwriter—all ways to describe the unwilling sleuth Aaron Tucker, whom one re-viewer dubbed a combination of "Bart Simpson and James Bond." In A Farewell to Legs, the second installment of the Aaron Tucker Mystery Series, Aaron is back on the trail again, this time trying to ferret out the murderer of a former classmate, a D.C. lobbyist whose enemies finally stick it to him, literally—with a six-inch steak knife. The deceased leaves behind a bombshell of a widow, a hidden bankroll of $13 million, and a cloud of political controversy, all of which lead Aaron to a barrel of red herrings.

But in the life of Aaron Tucker, one mystery is never enough (though he'd be quick to tell you otherwise). He's also been dele-gated the odious task of tracking down Buzbee School's secret stink-bomber, and his wife, the beautiful attorney Abby Stein, is being stalked by a former client. All in a day's work for the 5'4" freelance writer, who, as procrastinator extraordinaire, would rather be doing anything but investigating.

5 out of 5 stars Another fun read with zingers aplenty.......2006-06-25

Aaron Tucker is a freelance writer and house husband who helps take care of two kids while working. He also gets involved with solving fascinating mysteries. In this book, Aaron is asked to solve the murder of a major political figure by that individual's wife who happens to be an old schoolmate of Aaron's; he is also asked to find out who is flinging stink bombs at the school that his kids go to; his wife is apparently being threatened by a client who lost a case while being represented by her; and then there all the normal everyday events in this family's life.

That is quite a lot to pile into one mystery novel but Jeffrey Cohen manages to put all of that together along with the quirky character that Aaron Tucker is. Aaron has the tendency to fling witticisms and zingers with abandon at everyone. Most of the fun in this book is to try and keep up with those zingers and the inevitable puns and funny situations that develop.

Of course, since this is a murder mystery, one of the things that the reader tries to do is to solve the mystery. In that realm, all the various threads that go around the book tend to keep you hopping and guessing about one red herring or another. The fun of Mr. Cohen's writing style is that you are sometimes too busy laughing to recognize the importance of a clue!

If you have had the pleasure of reading the first book in this series "For Whom the Mini-Van Rolls", this book is quite similar. The same main characters are players in this one and most of the minor characters reappear including the police chief and his chief of detectives.

At the end of the book all the threads are closed off neatly and all the mysteries are solved. While two of them are logical and easily believed, two others are predicated on some very dubious connections including the discovery of the DNA of a man that was dead for 7 years before these events - that DNA being found at the scene of the crime.

It does not matter though, the laughs, the interactions, and the ridiculous situations that Aaron Tucker gets himself into and out of are good enough to make me want to get the next one in this series.

4 out of 5 stars The Return of Aaron Tucker in "A Farewell To Legs".......2005-04-14

In this sequel to "For Whom The Minivan Rolls," Aaron Tucker is once again called on to investigate a death. Louis Gibson, head of a right wing conservative group that stridently preached family values has been found dead in the bed of his mistress, Cheri Bratton. His wife, who was the dream of every guy she knew in high school when she was known as Stephanie Jacobs is still an attractive knockout twenty-five years later. Now known as Stephanie Jacobs Gibson, the new widow gets the news of her husband's death at the twenty-five year High School Reunion. What better setting for an alibi is there than being in front of your old classmates when you find out?

Because of his previous history detailed in the first book, Stephanie gets it in her head just hours after the murder to have Aaron investigate the crime and write about it for the editor she knows of a large and prestigious publication. After confirming with the editor how much the publication will pay, freelance writer Aaron Tucker reluctantly aggress and begins digging into the case.

At the same time, he deals with other storylines involving his activities as a stay at home Dad, the joys and perils of pet ownership when kids are involved, stink bombs at school, embezzlement and politics. Some of it is a very nasty business indeed and combined with the murder case, makes him a target. Before long, Aaron begins to wonder which party is just furious with him and which wants him removed permanently.

Everyone that was in the first book makes a repeat appearance here and very little new ground is covered in terms of character development. What also isn't covered is a detailed description of the first book. Unlike many sequels, this sequel can be safely read and enjoyed out of order with the first book. In short, one can safely read this book and go back later and hunt down the first book.

While not nearly as funny as the first book, this novel provides another very enjoyable read. For fellow stay at home Dads, Jeffrey Cohen writes with the clear authority of someone who has lived in the trenches. His characters, regardless of occupation are real people and come alive for the reader in every sense of the word. That fact, coupled with his creation of another mystery within a mystery that features a few sudden twists at the end, make this novel another very worthwhile read from him.

5 out of 5 stars sleeper series of the year!.......2004-07-18

A friend handed me Jeffrey Cohen's "For Whom the Minivan Rolls" and "A Farewell to Legs," telling me they were the sleeper mystery series of the year. I agree! These books are even more of an enjoyable read than Janet Evanovich's series because the humor never lets up! Cohen is a masterful writer.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but Needed Time for One Last Edit.......2004-03-09

Aaron Tucker is reuniting with people at his 25th high school reunion, including Stephanie, who can still make men drool with her drop dead gorgeous looks. But part way through the party, she gets a call that her husband, conservative political activist Louis Gibson, has been murdered in his current mistress's apartment. Stephanie insists that Aaron investigate, even getting him a lucrative article deal with a high profile magazine if he does so. But Aaron hardly knows where to start.

Meanwhile, the principal of his kids' school has come to him for help. Someone has set off three stink bombs, and the parents are putting pressure on her to find the culprit. Only problem is, she has no clue where to start. As if that weren't enough, the Tuckers are also experiencing the joys of pet ownership. There's certainly never a dull moment in Aaron's life. But can he juggle it all and solve the mysteries?

There's certainly never a dull moment in the book either. Narrated first person with plenty of sarcasm and puns, I grinned, chuckled, and laughed my way through the entire book. You can't help but fall in love with the Tuckers. They are a wonderful, warm family who face life with a twinkle in their eye. The relationship between Aaron and his wife Abby is especially enjoyable. The plot starts a little slow, but gains speed the further you go in the book and has a few nice surprises before you reach the end. Being a conservative, I was a little put out by the "Liberal good, conservative bad" characterizations that popped up every so often, but I was able to shrug that off.

My real problem with the book was the timeline. Entire days seemed to drop off the face of the earth with no explanation. Characters agree to meet one day, then meet another and act like it's what the plans were all along. I kept flipping back in the book to make sure I hadn't missed something. It doesn't affect the plot, but it sure is annoying. A final edit for these things and a few paragraphs scattered throughout to fill in missing time would have fix the problem.

With that issue in mind, this is still an enjoyable book anyone will love. I will certainly be spending more time with Aaron and his family and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and funny.......2004-01-29

A Farewell to Legs is a delightful book, both fun and funny. The plot has just enough twists and turns to keep you guessing, with a surprising and satisfying conclusion. Of course, there's lots of humor along the way. What I like best about this series is the strong relationship between Aaron and his wife Abby. Throw in two interesting kids and an accident-prone dog, and what comes out is a family that the reader wants to spend time with and get to know even better. Highly recommended.
