This book is a lot more than I had originally bargained for. Though it stated it was a fairly simple and straightforward text after initial read through it became quite clear, that this volume would suit someone with an accounting background already established. I would not recommend this book to start with.

I would not choose this book.......2004-01-27

In preparing for an financail class, I bought this book to help prepare me. I wish I had done a little research first. The lessons are OK, but among other things, there are a lot of editing mistakes, which can me one wonder if the answer is wrong because it's wrong, or the solution given is wrong. Also there are few examples that do not address all aspects of the lesson; the test question at the end will ask a different aspect not previously brought up.
I would choose another book.

Pointless verbeage around the subject.......2004-01-20

This book breaks all the good rules for the text books. Set your expectations straight: glossary does not exist, index is incomplete, definitions of terms are either absent or given after 10 pages of waterly discussions into the term. Many times book talks about the term without ever defining what it is. No summaries at the end of the chapter. Explanations at first appear to be plain English and simple until you realize that subject is not there.

My guess is it was probably meant for the experienced bookkeepers or accountants who need some high-level essays on the philosophy of accounting. However, section "For whom is this book?" clearly refers to people that have no accounting background or who took a class or two and never practiced it. The only reason why I am giving it 1 star is becuase Amazon does not give me an option to rate it with 0 stars.

Don't waste your Money-A Duke MBA.......2002-09-01

I bought this book to prepare for financial accounting. I do not recommend it, get the "Accounting for Finance" Workbook. This is basic accounting, not very related to actual financial analysis.

A thorough, well-written introduction to accounting.......2000-10-03

For those of us who don't have an accounting background, but need to have one fast, this book is great. I didn't follow the 36-hour guideline, although I have no doubt that the "course" can be completed in that time. I read it leisurely, an hour here, an hour there, and was able to read the book in two weeks. Each chapter has a distinct lesson, with an "exam" at the end of the chapter (and supplemental exams in the back of the book). The content is well written, with plenty of great examples and definitions of basic terms. I don't have an accounting background, but I needed one, and selected this book as one of many to get myself up to speed. This book was the best of several that I choose, and I do think it did the best job in terms of education. The book can be read straight through, or you can use it as a reference - the contents are segmented in such a way that it's a handy reference guide.

Highly recommended for those people without accounting backgrounds who need one.

The appointment of Earl Warren as Chief Justice of the United States in 1953 marked the opening of a new era in the nation's constitutional development. As Mr. Cox points out in his Preface, during the next fifteen years the Supreme Court rewrote, with profound social consequences, major constitutional doctrines governing race relations, the administration of criminal justice, and the operation of the political process. The extent and the rapidity of these changes raise grave questions concerning the nature and function of constitutional adjudication and the proper role of the Supreme Court in the national life.

In these lectures, originally given in somewhat shorter form in Honolulu in the summer of 1967 under the joint auspices of Harvard Law School and the University of Hawaii, Mr. Cox describes the main lines of constitutional development under the Warren Court. He analyzes the underlying pressures involved and the long-range institutional consequences in terms of the distribution of governmental power. The central theme of Mr. Cox's book is embodied in his examination of the American paradox that invests the judicial branch with the responsibility of deciding "according to law" our most pressing and divisive social, economic, and political questions.

Although not uncritical of the grounds on which several of the court's crucial decisions have been reached, Mr. Cox comes to the conclusion that the trend of the rulings has been "in keeping with the mainstream of American history--a bit progressive but also moderate, a bit humane but not sentimental, a bit idealistic but seldom doctrinaire, and in the long run essentially pragmatic--in short, in keeping with the true genius of our institutions."

Description:
The aim of this work was to study the effect of different organic wastes, viz. cow dung, grass, aquatic weeds and municipal solid waste with lime and microbial inoculants on chemical and biochemical properties of vermicompost. Cow dung was the best substrate for vermicomposting. Application of lime (5g/kg) and inoculation of microorganisms increased the nutrient content in vermicompost and also phosphatases and urease activities. Bacillus polymyxa, the free-living N-fixer, increased N-content of vermicompost significantly (p= <0.01) as compared to other inoculants.

From the supplier: Brush Wellman Inc.'s AlBeMet aluminum beryllium alloy has physical and mechanical characteristics which are much better than those of conventional aluminum alloys based on thermal management, mechanical stability and reduced weight. The physical characteristics of AlBeMet are substantially affected by beryllium content but not by the process. Its high modulus-to-density ratio decreases flexure and decreases the possibility of mechanically-caused failure. The AlBeMet is used in avionics, automobile components, and aircraft and satellite structures.

From the supplier: Nuclear Metals Inc. and Lockheed Martin Electronics and Missiles have developed a line of beryllium-aluminum alloys that may be used for investment castings. The qualities of the alloy include a high level of stiffness and ductility and a low density. They are shaped into complex components through vacuum melting and casting into preheated ceramic cells. Use of these alloys can lead to significant reductions in weight. One of their applications is in the aerospace industry where they are used as material for components of helicopters and fighter aircraft.

From the supplier: Olin 170 is a high-beryllium copper that can achieve tensile strengths of about 1380 MPa or 200 ksi. Unlike other copper alloys that acquire their physical and mechanical characteristics from cold rolling and the addition of alloying elements, beryllium copper alloys get their characteristics through the same processes but with the addition of precipitation hardening heat treatment. Some applications include diaphragms, Bourdon tubing, bellows, lock washers, fasteners and fuse clips.

Materials where electrons show nearly localized rather than itinerant behaviour, such as the high-temperature superconducting copper oxides, or manganate oxides, are attracting interest due to their physical properties and potential applications. For these materials, the interaction between electrons, or electron correlation, plays an important role in describing their electronic strucuture, and the standard methods for the calculation of their electronic spectra based on the local density approximation (LDA) breakdown. This is the first attempt to describe recent approaches that go beyond the concept of the LDA, to successfully describe the electronic structure of narrow-band materials.

If you like the Sopranos, you should like this story. Albeit the setting with a much older crowd and in the Appalachian mountains.
