Customer Reviews:
Same poor print quality on the original and replacement books I ordered!.......2006-05-22
Can't comment on the content because both the first and second copies I received were not legible. What happened at the printer's? No quality control check, apparently, before these books were shipped for sale.
Poor content, poor print quality . How'd this ever get published?.......2005-12-11
This book was useless to me, and also maddening because it purported to address issues with quality of content. I should have read the other reviews here and then steered clear of this book. The content is anemic: nothing of substance here. And the publication looks like someone took it to a copy shop and made a copy of a copy.
This book simply does not offer useful information or -- by virtue of content and presentation -- 'walk the talk' of the importance of quality content.
Incredibly bad printing quality.......2005-09-07
This author is highly recommended, but the printing quality is worse than from an extremely poor fax machine. I really don't care about the quality of the content as trying to read it would be unbearable. It is going back immediately.
First 30 pages are all you really need........2003-11-01
I'm a huge fan of McGovern, but this book isn't worth the money. You can actually read the first section of the book - the part I really loved - at his web site for free: www.gerrymcgovern.com. The "sample web style guide" at the end of the book is woefully underwritten. Buy CONTENT CRITICAL instead.
Almost Criminal.......2003-05-03
This book is next to useless as a web style guide. Of the 224 pages only the first 35 pages are devoted to the topic of style. The rest of the book is a glossary of terms with little practical use. Most of the material presented in this book is available on the web for free and in greater detail.
My first glance through the book was a disappointment. Two days later I gave it a second chance but it confirmed my first impression so I sent it back.

Book Description
Two items were firmly on the European economic agenda in the 1990s: financial market integration and European monetary union (EMU). The former was supposed to have been achieved via the Single Market Act and the latter came into being on January 1, 1999. This study is concerned with a particular connection between the two themes, namely the process of financial intermediation and especially the role of banking. The book is centred on four key questions:
-What happened to European banking before, during and after the implementation of the Single Market Act?
-From a theoretical perspective, to what do banks owe their existence: what is special about banking, what makes banks tick and why do they matter?
-How does competition in banking unfold: what are the main channels or competitive instruments in the process?
-What are the links between the yield curve and the banking system: how do changes in the term structure of interest rates affect both bank pricing and portfolio allocation?
This research explores competition among banks and other financial intermediaries, with specific implications for the asset allocation process and pricing policies in banking. This book provides the foundations for an additional perspective on optimal currency area theory (OCA). The links between financial and monetary integration (via financial intermediation and banking) offer another path towards understanding monetary transmission and, therefore, OCA theory. This study promotes the idea that banking and market imperfections are effectively two sides of the same coin. Financial intermediation, and the economics of banking, merit special consideration - especially in discovering the impact and effectiveness of financial integration and EMU.

Book Description
What role will the current evolution of banking systems play in the newly adopted EU countries during the historic challenges following enlargement? This book, a blend of economics and political economy, offers a systematic analysis of the current trends in financial intermediation in the countries of the newly enlarged Europe, with particular focus on those policies taken by foreign banks on the one hand, and by regulatory and supervisory authorities on the other. The authors argue that their research has led to one conclusion: in order to enter the EU, the accession countries needed to increase the efficiency of their economic systems rapidly through liberalization and privatization. The book assesses whether the presence of foreign banks will contribute to long term economic growth and financial stability, and how the architecture of banking regulations and supervision should be designed. As a multidisciplinary work, though principally economics, the book will appeal to scholars and academics of politics and law. It also has particular relevance for regulators and supervisory institutions, as well as professionals including bankers, financial operators and also legal compliance officers.

From the supplier: Ensuring financial stability within the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) will be challenging in the early years. This is partly because of several aspects of EMU that might increase the potential for systemic events, including the possibility that the Trans-European Automated Real-Time Gross Settlement Express Transfer System will be used less extensively than expected. Another is the possibility that the risk of contagion could increase due to the growth of cross-border unsecured interbank lending. An important issue that needs to be addressed is whether national central banks will be able to adequately evaluate the risk of contagion and whether the national central banks of troubled financial institutions will be quickly identified. The European Central Bank may eventually be compelled to assume a leading and coordinating role in crisis management and banking supervision.

From the supplier: The adoption of a single European currency will create opportunities for greater integration of financial markets in the region. European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) offers a number of potential benefits, including the reduction of spot transaction costs, the elimination of foreign exchange risks in long-term contracts between entities in EMU countries, the elimination of barriers to cross-border investment within the region, and the likely diversification of investment portfolios. The structural changes that will take place in European financial markets as a result of economic integration and other developments will have a significant impact on international portfolio adjustments and capital flows. The euro has the potential to become the world's most important reserve currency next to the dollar.

Book Description
The introduction of novel genes into plants by genetic transformation holds great promise for plant breeding, and many crop species have been rendered virus-resistant by expression of viral sequences. However, it is essential to also evaluate the potential risks associated with this new technology. Among the types of genetically modified plants that could represent potential ecological risks, ones expressing viral sequences pose questions of particular interest. In this volume special attention is given to recombination in plants expressing sequences of RNA or DNA viruses, heterologous encapsidation or other forms of complementation in plants expressing coat protein genes, potential deleterious effects of satellite RNAs associated with cucumber mosaic virus, and sexual transmission of virus resistance genes to potentially weedy relatives.

Book Description
Two outlaws of love (and literature) at large in their own Wild West.
Ralph Crawford may be a talented short-story writer -- one of the best in the Bay Area, in America, in the 1970s; hell, in the whole English-speaking, late-middle-twentieth century -- but off the page he's only human. In fact, as his wife, Alice Ann, can attest, he's a mess: a jealous but faithless husband, an inveterate bouncer of checks, a plunderer of private misadventures for the sake of his fiction, and an often hapless drunk. When his (similarly human) buddy, Jim Stark -- a novelist burning with ambition, promise, and humiliation over his own failed marriage -- promises to deliver a cargo of incriminating letters to Ralph's latest paramour, a dark lady in Missoula named Lindsay Wolfe, the lives of all four are changed in ways none of them could predict.
Careening across the western states during the twilight of the San Francisco underground, Chuck Kinder's already semi-legendary masterpiece, twenty-five years in the making, is a rueful, comi-tragic juggernaut of good and bad intentions gone awry, high seriousness and hard living, and the gradual, painful coming of age of two couples who have spent the best years of their lives raising bad judgment to an art. With affection and self-savaging wit, Kinder captures the siren song of the writerly vocation in all its squalor, destructiveness, and glory.

Customer Reviews:
The Jerry Lee Lewis of American Letters.......2004-06-16
A raunchy, raucous romp by America's King of Rockabilly writers. It's about the desperate sweetness of artistic attempt and letting the dark angel out, something seemingly necessary in certain neighborhoods of life. Contains a lot of Chuck's trademark bluesy lyrical notes and some of the funniest writing I've ever read anywhere by anybody. The scene where our two heroes are held captive in their car by a dog is by itself well worth the price of a hardback or two. So, Good Golly Miss Molly, Great Balls of Fire, there's a Whole Lot of Shakin' Goin' On. Take a chance on this book. It's a rare treat.
These characters put the FUN in dysFUNctional.......2003-07-11
It took a while to finish this one but I'm glad I did. The novel focuses on the perilously decadent lives of Ralph and Alice Anne. Crafted in the dialectical tradition of the "Honeymooners" television show of old, this contemporary story extracts the dark, vile, highly addictive nature of its characters and their friends. Ralph and Jim are best friends, college professors and writers, whose lives spirals from one disaster to the next as they move through life with no rules no boundaries and a very limited future. Kinder has written a story of drug induced drunken debauchery that is both comical and loathsome at once. His writing is well paced and clear. "Honeymooners" is an overall enjoyable read that highlights the irreverent imagination (or actual life) of a talented author. This is my first read by Kinder and I'm not disappointed.
what has happened to the novel?.......2003-02-22
Simply put, this novel stunk. The language is imprecise, the characters boring and unlikeable, and the situations stupid. It's tedious, rambling, unreadable verbal muck. It'd be easier and less painful to get it into your brain by ramming it through your ear rather than reading it. You'd be more entertained watching hair grow.
A not unusually not unlaborious exercise in MFA not art.......2003-01-21
The first 100 pages read like Beavis 'n Butthead do Writing. Huh. Huh huh. Then Kinder shows his stuff, not unlike the not unusual not untalentless nonpeople who spend years sustaining each other on a vague notion they call literary. And he "teaches" writing. Oy vay. Why can't he write a simple simile without using a double not for flourish? This book was just plain annoying.
That this was a New York Times notable book is clear evidence that the literary/academic complex wants to rule "art" in America. Bah.
An Amusing Tale Full of Dysfunctional Characters.......2002-09-11
Chuck Kinder's Honeymooners is an amusing tale of two writers whose lives strip away the "glamour" of the hard drinking writer a la Ernest Hemingway. Ralph and Jim are likeable losers, involved with and married to, women who barely manage to put up with them. The novel is rather unconventional and the narrative moves forward on its own pace, providing amusement all the way. If you enjoy a humorours novel that is a little different, give this one a try. Enjoy.
